Brisket Sandwich
Jacqueline T.

I think I'm a bit spoiled by Lewis, because I found the wings we ordered to be average at best along with the beans. The brisket sandwich was full of fat and pretty much inedible. I like that they have live music, but the service, food and atmosphere are all mediocre.

Ordering takeout

After spending the afternoon exploring Charlestown, we stopped at Southern Roots on our way back to the motel. It's a dark little place, bar atmosphere. They have open mic on Thursdays. Sports on the televisions. Decent music. Our food was ready within ten minutes, packaged well. We were starving, sun weathered, and excited by the menu. We got: Fried ribs (appetizer)... get this. They're fall off the bone tender, coated with a slightly crunchy sugary rub, and drizzled with Carolina white sauce. That was my first good experience with that kind of sauce. I'm not sure how to describe its flavor. It's not something to use as a main sauce, but the drizzle was nice. Brisket - fantastic. Barbecue ribs - yes, a second kind of ribs. These weren't very good, though. Toothsome and unremarkable. Pass on these Shredded chicken - part of the three meat combo. Alright. Better than the ribs. But you'd be better sticking to the brisket. Pork Belly - it was all right. Not the worst choice. Definitely needs sauce. The Carolina Gold is a solid selection here. For sides we got some delicious baked beans, great potato salad, decent mac and cheese, and some sort of meaty rice nonsense that did not appeal. Pulled pork sandwich- big chunks of tender meat, unsauced but they gave us a ton of different sauces. I used the sweet chili sauce because I'm a sucker for a sticky sauce. Some of the meat also had that brown sugar rub on it, which added some texture. Cole slaw - my side with my sandwich. Maybe I'm not Southern enough but I found the cole slaw absolutely worthless. I wanted to put it on my sandwich but the dressing was flavorless. I even tried adding some vinegar to it. That was a bad idea. Chucked it. It was quite a Southern feast. There are other barbecue places nearby, but I'm glad we chose this place for the fried ribs alone. Would recommend

Food is great, awesome bbq and the service was fast. The overall ambiance is rustic and authentic Low Country. The pulled chicken had a wonderful flavor and texture. We ordered Loaded Nachos with Brisket, 12 wings (6 with honey mustard flavor and 6 sweet Bourbon bbq). Our sides : waffle fries, Mac & cheese and green collard. Really yummy !!!

Smokehouse Medley Sandwich

Ordered take out and I didn't have to wait at all! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted and the food was ready to go. I ordered the smokehouse medley sandwich. It was supposed to have brisket, pulled pork, slaw and pico de gallo, however there was no slaw on the sandwiches. That was alittle disappointing, but the sandwich was still pretty good.

They have 4 sauces on the table to choose from.

It has been a while since I've been to Southern Roots Smokehouse (SRS), perhaps too long. I was reminded today of what I had been missing for the last couple years...absolutely amazing food in a comfortable Southern environment with service that is genuinely pleasant! After finding a comfortable seat by the bar, my wife and I were greeted by Ciara, our smiling server for the evening. She was quick, reliable, and unobtrusive. I so enjoyed the Brisket Wrap with it's perfect mix of crunch and chew, it was a true tasty treasure. The side of pork hash over rice was a nice accompaniment, but at a premium ($4 for premium sides). My wife couldn't be distracted from her ribs, baked beans and potato salad, and commented that it was all "much better than our usual place". So impressed was I with my meal experience that I ordered some house made pork rinds to go ($5 M-F 4-7pm). Yes, I sampled them before leaving and just might make them a regular addition to my meal at each visit. They were light, crisp, hot and sprinkled lightly with seasoning that reminded me of Old Bay. Oh yeah, they were accompanied by house make pimento cheese. Yummy!! For all those who contributed to this wonderful dinner, please know I will be back soon! And maybe I'll bring Sterling, since they are pet friendly.

Went to the Park circle location. Dry meats, extremely fatty brisket, and the worst bbq sauces I've ever had. The sauces in my experience with bbq spots are flavor bombs for the meats. Southern roots bbq sauces tastes like they added a cup of water to all of them. No flavor, just like the meats. The sides were the only decent menu item, although the collards had full fat pieces of pork in them. Very upsetting especially because the price is higher than some of the best bbq spots in Charleston. So I paid extra to have an incredibly unsatisfactory meal.

Brisket, pulled pork, collards, potatoe salad,
Terri M.

My husband and I were going to catch a cruise in Charleston. We were told there was a restaurant across the street from our hotel we could walk to. I CAN NOT tell you how happy I am we went there!!! We had pimento cheese with fresh hot cracklings, THEN if that wasn't good and big enough to stuff us, for Dinner we had Brisket(the best I ever had), ribs, pulled pork, and smoked chicken between both of us. Sides were the yummiest mac & cheese ever, collards (that were AHHHHmazing)baked beans, and coleslaw. The beer was very cold and delicious and our server was such a sweetheart. I wish I remembered her name, but I don't. She was a doll and a very good server. We absolutely loved it there and will go back anytime we're near.! The ambiance was great with live music later but we were so full we had to go home Please go! Have no doubt, I am a picky foodie and I was a waitress for 20 years.

Stopped by here during our trip to Charleston with some friends and were able to be seated immediately with 8 people easily. The GF and I got the smokehouse sampler and have to say everything on the plate was pretty good but the only complaint was the ribs were very dry but the sauce they had on top was amazinggggg! After the appetizer though it went down hill. We got a plate to split being the brisket, pulled chicken, and pork belly. Everything lacked flavor and salt level. The pulled chicken was dry as a bone and the brisket had no bark whatsoever. We also never received the Mac and cheese we had ordered with the plate but didn't bother bringing it up since we were full anyways. Up until this point I was going to give this place a 5 star review. We did go around 8pm so maybe this is why and the food might've been a little old because of it? The vibes were great though in this place with country music playing and the staff were super cool but very inattentive. Overall due to the entree being okay I'll give it 3 stars. Would consider going back though earlier to see if that would make a difference in the flavor.

Southwest Salad with brisket
Julia R.

We had a good lunch today at Southern Roots Smokehouse. I had the southwest salad with brisket, and I really enjoyed it. The quesadilla bites are a nice addition to the salad. My dad had the $10 lunch special and had the bbq pork sandwich with Mac and cheese. The service was good and the servers were very helpful. I didn't like how dark it was in there at lunch time, but I'm guessing other people like it. Overall, we had a good meal.

Small parking spaces so you would have to rely on street parking on busier days however I was lucky to park behind the restaurant on a Wednesday evening. Service was excellent! Let's talk about the food! I ordered a 3 meat combo: Brisket, Pork Ribs, and Pulled Pork. My favorite was the brisket however I wish it was sliced not chopped nevertheless it was tasty. The Pork ribs were delicious as well but I wish it was more tender. Pulled pork was nicely seasoned but not my personal preference of meats however it was my first time so I had to get a little taste of everything. I will definitely be back to try their brisket sandwich! The sides: Collard Greens, Mac & Cheese, and Cornbread that all come with the combo. I enjoyed these sides as they hit what southern sides are all about. No problem there!

The texture was fine, but the flavor of the sauce was too sweet for me. It did come with a unique square of cornbread, which was really moist and good. - I ordered the wings because they needed the dressing. They came along with it to make the flavor profile. I wasn't a fan of them without the dressing. They were also a little dry. I would give them a 3 out of 5. - The appetizer, the cornbread itself, had a nice butter topping for it. The cornbread seemed to have corn bits in it, which were chewy, but the cornbread was also dry, so I'd have to give it a 2 out of 5. - The empanadas themselves were cooked a little long, but the filling was really good. The flavors of the corn and everything together made it a 5 out of 5. They were a little pricey for two empanadas, but it was the star of the meal. I would definitely say the empanadas are a 4 out of 5 only because of the quantity that you get for the price. - The mocktail that they made was super sour. It needed some simple syrup to tone it down, but flavor-wise, it was good. I would have to give the entire experience a 3 out of 5.

The process is a bit confusing as far as grabbing a menu then ordering at the counter then they bring your food, so we decided to sit at the bar where it's full service. The bartender was amazing. She had recommendations and let me try a drink before fully committing. We ordered the Golden Hour fries with yum yum sauce (amazing), the crab rangoons, pulled pork noodles and red beans and rice with chicken. The crab rangoons are not what you think of for traditional rangoos. They're actually hush puppies with a crab dip. The hush puppies are incredible and we just spooned the dip on top. Different but delightful. The pulled pork noodle bowl was a bit of a let down. It truly was just a heap of noodles and some pork. The pork was really really good, but I was surprised the noodles had no flavor and overwhelmed the bowl. The red beans and chicken had much more flavor, it was bone in chicken however the flavor was really nice. The drink menu is thoughtfully curated and crafted with some really unique options. We tried a highball and a frozen drink and both were really tasty. Next time I think I will order a BBQ plate so I can have more of the actual meat because it was really good, but I'm glad I tried something a little different.
