This is a wonderful neighborhood theater. We went to see 'One Life' last Sunday but when we got there we learned that it had already been shown. Being that it was the only show and apparently the only day to see it this week, we were extremely disheartened. As we were heading out the door the manager said that she could show us the film while she finished some work she had to do. What an incredibly kind gesture! Can you imagine anything like this happening at a major theatre chain. Uh, no! Please support the Venue and others like them. This theatre is a valuable asset to Lexington Center. read more

Absolutely love this theater. Been coming here since I was 5 and it is still solid. They have a great run of indie movies and few big ones. Prices are reasonable, especially considering they are competing with the major spots. Good snack choices and friendly service from local students mostly. Support your local arts spaces! read more

What a treasure! Lexington is lucky to have this gem, a charming 2-screen theater that shows 1st run movies.

We went here for the first time a few weeks ago to watch "Before Midnight." We're big fans of "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset," and we thought this was the best of the trilogy. In fact, this was probably the best movie we've seen this year, which doesn't really say much, since 2013 has been chock full of skunky movies, including the Lone Ranger, After Earth, Grown Ups 2, etc. Not surprisingly, "Before Midnight" is both character and dialogue-driven, with beautiful camera shots of Greece. It's a very raw and realistic film. I can't really compare Lexington Venue with Coolidge Corner Theater...that would be like asking me to compare who's the better actress, Lindsay Lohan or Meryl Streep? My biggest gripe with Lexington Venue on this occasion was how many old people jam-packed this theater to watch this movie...it was like being on the set of "Cocoon." I don't want to sound like an ageist, but throughout the movie all we could hear was "WHAT DID SHE SAY?" or "SHE'S SHOWING TOO MUCH BOOB" or my personal favorite "I REALLY NEED TO SLEEP" (it was a 7 PM show). This time around it was like watching a movie with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 commentary, sans the comedy. We're hoping the next film we catch here will be a silent film a la "The Artist." read more

Growing up in Lexington, I saw a lot of movies here. The good: They don't care if you bring in food from CVS or a frappuccino from the bucks if your Britney Spears (or me in HS). The movies are second run but they get some good indie movies and some decent commercial flicks. Tickets are cheap. It's not unusual to have the whole place to yourself so you can discuss the movie without bothering people, or giggle about boys...oh wait, i guess i dont do that (that much) anymore. The bad: A few times i've been there and the projector stopped working. Did they fix it? Nope. Everyone just left. Once it was right before the ending to Good Will Hunting and it was majorly lame, but i had already seen it before - ha! Well, people who hadn't were pretty pissed. How do you like them apples? The place smells like mold and isn't always so clean, although in general Lexingtonians are pretty clean people so it's still way better than city theatres. Good option if you live in Sexy Lexi or surrounding suburbs. read more

When the companionable Trixy insisted on seeing "The Wrestler" starring Micky Rourke we discovered that the scrappy little Lexington Flick had a showing at the very reasonable hour of 6 PM. We got there a bit early and decided to spend the extra time perusing $75 fake-leather-bound journals and $100 travel alarm clocks at Signature Stationers right next door at 1800 Massachusetts Avenue. Within 30 seconds, the unpleasant proprietor announced that he was closing up shop and promptly began shooing Visa-card-clutching customers out the door in mid-purchase. Apparently this guy feels that shutting his doors at 5:30 PM come hell or high water is of the utmost importance -- more important than say, actually selling anything. We left hoping he keeps his low sales record intact. Over at the Flick, Trixy pursued a hissing, screechy cat-fight with the female cashier after an unsuccessful attempt to convince her she deserved a Senior Citizen discount, complimentary alcoholic beverages, and a foot rub. Cashier: "But you're NOT 65" Trixy: "But I COULD be!" We trooped up a rickety walkway to find seats in the tiny upstairs theater. Here we discovered a very unique seating plan. It was apparently designed for circus midgets or very slender extraterrestrial life forms. If you are a normal sized human the only way you can fit into the seats is to draw your knees into your chest cavity and wedge your hands beneath the buttocks of the people on either side of you. As a result, all kinds of new and unusual relationships bloomed as the closely-packed theater filled up and took on the distinctive funk of body odor and rancid popcorn. After what seemed like an eternity, the lights dimmed for the promised feature film. No sooner than the opening credits began, the picture started jumping like a kangaroo in heat. Mickey Rourke appeared to be gripped in some form of violent, spastic convulsion until his image jittered right off the screen. Announcing she'd "%$#! had enough", Trixy stormed into the projection room. A series of unexplained bright flashes, unearthly howls, and the sound of gears grinding up celluloid ensued. Moments later she reappeared, legs pumping in protest, held firmly aloft between two theater employees who spirited her swiftly out the door. I am told "The Wrestler" is quite a fine film, but I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD to see it. read more

Adore this theater. Sure it actually smells its' age (it was an actual theater before becoming a movie theater, so I believe it's been there in some form for well over 100 years), but it is quaint and always makes me happy. The downstairs (bigger) theater is a bit smaller than a "small" theater in a multiplex, while the upstairs is very tiny and makes you feel like you're in a private screening room. Shows mainstream movies, albeit a bit later than the larger chains, and also has a decent array of independent movies that can be harder to come by, especially the farther you get from the city. Not only are you not getting ripped off like you would at a multiplex (I think it's now $7/show, $5 Wednesday nights), but your money is going into preserving a small business while making you feel as though you're being transported back in time. Snacks are also extremely reasonably priced. Does not have many shows a day and actually gets pretty busy at times, so I suggest getting your ticket a bit early and walking around fabulous downtown Lexington. Only thing I cannot stand is how you are completely locked out until about 15 minutes before showtime, although I understand why they need to do it (usually only have 2 or 3 people total working at any given time). I am dyslexic and proud of it....But sometimes I truly amazing myself. Take for instance this past weeks shenanigans. My lovely girlfriend and I decided to venture out to a movie and we deicded to check out the Lexington Flick. We arrived and purchased tickets. The nice high school age girl at the counter sold us our tickets with out question. Behind her I noticed the 1950 black display with groves and white removable letters welcoming us to the Theater and explaning that "Adults $7.50" "Seniors $6.50" and then at the bottom almost as a joke I thought it said "Manatees $4.50". So with out thinking I ask the nice 11th Grader "Why on earth are you selling Manatees tickets?" She was completely stumped just like she was in AP math class that very morning. She nicely replied with " Do you mean matinee?" After some embarrassment and a ton of laughter we all got on the same page! The movie was great, the theater is old and charming. Check out a manatee tickets as they are cheeper! :) read more

A super little independent movie theater! This place seems to be the Lexington version of the West Newton Cinema or the Coolidge Corner Theatre. They seem to consistently choose the quirky films I want to see. There are a few unusual snack selections. The place looks like it has been renovated recently. There is ample parking. I gave 4/5 stars because I got seated in the front row on the side the other night seeing a film that was a near sell out and had a pretty bad view of the screen. They warned me, but it doesn't make sense to have seats in a theater that are so bad! My advice: arrive early and get a better seat. read more

Oh my goodness! Where has this time warp gem been hiding my whole life? What's that? Did you say that you receive free refills on your soda? And baby bottles of Peligrino? Tickets are 7 dollars? Oh great. Don't mind the elderly as the staff helps them up (and later down) the stairs. (Not a joke). Wow, that screen isn't much larger than many people's in home teles and the film projector has to be manually focused. With room for about 36, it's quite a cozy theatre. Wait, though, this part is epic. Before the movie starts, Joel, the assistant manager, came over the mic to introduce the film, apologize for its delayed beginning and make us aware of all our emergency exits. I understand that in 1956 this kind of customer service was customary, but in 2010 it is cherished and a lovely respite from the rude teenagers employed at Boston's local theatres. i.cannot.wait.to.find.an.excuse.to.go.back. read more

This place looks like a little hole-in-the-wall, but it's a charming little place with great prices and all the artsy movies AMC doesn't carry. I got to see Midnight in Paris here, a film I'd been dying to see. It was great to have the chance to see it in a great little theatre at a good price. The projection is a bit old, but works just fine, the seats are comfortable, the staff are very friendly, I had no problem seeing the screen (even with a tall person right in front of me) and even though it was 100 outside, the AC wasn't cranked up too high. I'll definitely be back for more movies here. What a treat! read more

The Venue is my go-to theater, as it's simple without the multiplex noise and 15 minutes of previews prior to a film. I appreciate its coziness and like that I can most often purchase a ticket and walk right in without long lines of people buying tickets to 10+ other movies. I also really like that because it's in the center of Lexington, there are plenty of dining choices before and after a show. I don't have to drive from the theater to somewhere else when a movie is over because I have numerous choices right in town. It's not the fanciest of theaters, but then again, I'm not paying sky-high prices either. It's clean and well-maintained (especially the bathroom, go figure). read more

A magical experience. I surprised my extended family by renting out the theater one night, and they can't stop talking about it. The space is great, and the price was very reasonable. I think they started renting the theater to stay in business during Covid, but I hope they continue doing it. read more

I've probably driven by this place a dozen times not knowing there was a movie theatre right in downtown Lexington. It was a nice little theatre, two screens only. Our movie was upstairs. The place is small but it was clean and quiet. My only criticism has to do with watching the movie. The screen itself isn't nearly as big as we've grown accustomed to at other theatres. And for whatever reason the movie did not stretch to the edge of the screen. None of the trailers stretched to fit the screen either, and in fact some of them seemed to be a different aspect ratio. I don't know if the screen itself isn't a standard aspect ratio or maybe the projector isn't far enough back to fill the screen. Picture and sound quality were fine, but it really felt like a home theatre in someone's house verse a "big screen" cinema experience. read more

I live walking distance to this theater so it is our local theater. I almost never go to another theater because of the selection they get and how homey this theater is. It is clean, friendly and convenient. It also costs less than the huge multi theater venues. Since there are so many restaurants you can eat before or after your movie. Definitely my go to movie watching place. read more

Not accessible for patrons with mobility limitations. A very unempathetic manager who blamed us for not seeing this on their website (where???). The ticket seller was oblivious when she sold us tickets to an upstairs screen, despite how visibly limited my mother was. Wow, way to make a resident of Lexington feel very unwelcome. read more

The theater is clean and the staff are always friendly. They get offbeat flicks I wouldn't see otherwise, as well as a mainstream films, even on opening weekend. (Recently saw The Great Gatsby and Now You See Me here on opening weekend.) The theater isn't freezing cold and the sound isn't too loud, like you find in most of the big chains. Happy to go to the theater in town whenever possible. Downstairs theater is more watchable than upstairs, which is basically like a really big TV screen. Thankfully, the new owners replaced the saggy seats and got rid of the old, smelly carpet. Good snacks and friendly, responsive staff. Great theater to see a show. Inexpensive, and right in Downtown Lexington. Off the bike path as well. Also a scene was filmed at the theater for the Academy Award winning movie the fighter. The front of the movie theater and the stationary store is in the shot, as well as some of the street and parking spaces, as well as an inside shot in one of the theaters. Pretty cool eh? This is a cute local movie theater. Two screens, smaller one on the second floor. Staff was friendly, and the chairs were comfortable.

Decent, local theatre. Doesn't have the character of the Somerville Theatre. Only gave it 2 stars because it usually smells pretty foul and sitting in the seats for two hours made me feel like I needed to shower. If you're doing dinner/drinks in Lexington it is a good choice, but not worth a special trip. read more

I like this little two-screen movie theater for several reasons: its size, the price of tickets, easy on-street parking, and the fact that it shows high-quality movies that I missed the first time around. I generally don't see a movie until my friends have talked it up sufficiently - I'm usually just too busy to go - so Lexington Venue is the perfect movie house for me. It feels like a small-town theater straight out of the 20th century, which I appreciate very much. Two funny things: 1) sometimes you can hear the audio of the movie showing in the other movie theater; 2) the women's bathroom is surprisingly classy, albeit tiny. My high school decided to host a film festival at the Venue and the school's film club organized the entire event by themselves, including the ticket sales, the advertisements, and other logistics. Film club members had to personally donate a large sum to make the even happen. However, upon attending the actual film festival, every single member in the club was forced by the Venue owner, Peter Siy, to pay full price for admission. How could he make high school students who organized the whole thing pay for their own admission to their own event, and pocket all the profits himself? Needless to say, the Venue deserves NEGATIVE stars for their attitude and treatment of its local customers. I do NOT recommend supporting this kind of cheap, un-professional business. read more

On August 2, my husband and I were there for the 2:00 show. Wait no AC! Apparently had problems with it and had a portable AC in the lobby. I preceded into the theater to check for myself, awful stagnant air quality. The board of health should check it out. And the matinee was 9.00, go to Waltham. read more
