Local Bookstore filled with tons of favorites and well mixes of books I've never even heard of. My favorite was how the employees all had a recommendation and a little snippet of a summary so you get an idea of what the book could be about. Best of all? I was able to get a free cup of delicious coffee from next door! So, go and spend some money $ on books to enjoy and a cup of brew to sip on as a bonus! *Side note to whoever is in charge of music. As a local author, published by an indie publisher, my husband and I always visit and support smaller, independent bookstores whenever we can, realizing the immeasurable value of these establishments. While we have been to Liberty Bay Books previously, this visit was especially fun, as it was bustling with other enthusiast shoppers/readers. The shop has a good selection of books (and genres), and we absolutely loved seeing the local authors prominently celebrated at the front of the store. I was also delighted when I asked a younger staff for recommendations, and she was engaging, knowledgeable, and excited to talk books. This is why I am happy to pay full price for a book at a smaller bookstore. It's an actual experience. In fact, now that we live closer to this charming bookstore, we will certainly be having these experiences more often. We had a great time in this store over the weekend. They had a great selection and great customer service. They were doing a "Where's Waldo" hunt where my daughter had to find Waldo throughout different stores in town. She then brought back her list and they gave her a button and a free pizza party! It's my first introduction to awesome, quirky, cool, PacNorwest independant bookstores. They have a good size childrens department and a very knowledgeable owner that can find anything for you, or if she doesn't have it, offers to get it for you. I loved the local author section. Not being from here, I was thrilled to see how many authors were local and the effort made to highlight their works. They also have some cool fun gifts (socks, bras, funny greeting cards, etc). The owner, Suzanne hosts several book clubs, readings, and cultural events monthly, making this not just a book store, but a real pillar in the Poulsbo community. read more

It was quaint and in a lovely area, but overall did not thrill me much. It was new and used, but there were hardly any used books. It seemed to highly cater to kids books which is fine, but not what *I* was interested in. The store was a bit cluttered in areas and not as comfortable as many bookstores feel. I wish there's been less clutter and more comfy places to sit and peruse. read more

A lovely, quirky, peaceful oasis amidst the more touristy stores in downtown Poulsbo. As others have said, it has extensive YA and Children's sections, and I always love browsing through the local authors section for a Pacific Northwest fix. A friend was recently visiting from out of town with her 10 year old daughter who loves to read, so of course I brought them here (and Sluy's. Why does every review of Poulsbo I do mention Sluy's?). They wre both entranced. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, so don't let the size of the place fool you. If they don't have something in stock, they will happily order it. read more

Really great, local bookstore. I have a Nook, but still love to buy hard copies of certain books/series, and this is a great place to go. The owner is very friendly and helpful. They offer both used and new books. With many books having been signed by the author. The children's section is big, and my 7 year old would spend all day in there if she could. There is a coffee shop located inside, with seating, so it makes a nice place to sit and relax. The location of the bookstore is perfectly located in downtown Poulsbo. We come into the downtown area at least once every couple of weeks to swing by Sluys and Liberty Bay Books. read more

Quaint, friendly little independent bookstore. New and used books. HUGE children/YA section. If they don't have the book you want, they order it and get it QUICK! Employees are always friendly, and quick to help. The store has community events, such as something of a Halloween Party with their graveyard dance Halloween 2009, their sock puppet party in Feb of 2010. read more

This is such an amazing bookstore in such a small place! I stopped in with a friend while I was visiting Poulsbo. The staff helped us find books for her kids, looking all over trying to find a specific book. This place is jam-packed with amazing stuff and books of every kind! The second I stepped into Liberty Bay Books, I knew this small town bookstore had more to offer than any large, corporate owned one. The staff are brilliant, and helpful beyond compare. You want to see if they have the book in stock before you head to town? Give them a call, and they will double check the shelves for you even if the computer says it's in, and hold it for you. The book you want is out of stock? They will order it for you, and have it the next day. They aren't carrying a certain author? Again, they'll order it for you, and contact you the minute it arrives. You don't live anywhere near here because you're visiting from out of town, but want to continue to purchase and support small, local businesses? You can order from them, and they'll ship it to you. How is *that* for customer service?! It's fantastic, I tell you! They offer a variety of genres, and include a dedicated section for local authors (I was surprised to see so many!). They also have a number of greeting cards, and decorative items to choose from, and even a little sitting area where you can chat about your favorite book with friends. This quaint and packed bookstore is centrally located in historic Poulsbo and offers that quintessential coastal town experience. Parking can be tricky, but you are only a block away from the public parking lot at the marina. On my first visit to the shop many years ago, the owner and I were discussing a local author named Kristin Hannah. I told her that I have procured Ms. Hannah's entire catalogue minus her earlier, hard to find romance novels. Lo and behold, she had them! I was so moved that she would sell me such rare books, and I always make a point to return when I am in Poulsbo. They have an extensive children's and YA sections, and they have plenty of novelty items like book posters and quirky magnets. This is definitely a place to stop and visit when you are taking in historic Poulsbo! read more

Stopped into the store tonight to inquire about the Where's Waldo hunt. Wow. I thought the Where's Waldo hunt was about bringing people into their stores but I've never felt more unwelcome in Poulsbo. I guided my 8 year old son inside so he could ask the gal working about the hunt. "We're the only store open" and hands us a pamphlet. Okay so how does it work? "Read the directions" she says. Uh, okay. So what's the prize? "Read the directions" she says again. So my son asks me what the prize is. I don't know and quite frankly I don't care at this point. When Bremerton has their hunt we'll go to a local business down there and see if we're more welcomed. read more

Cute place to stop while the other places in town open. They are a little expensive, but they are the only cute gift shop around so I cannot blame them for capitalizing on it. I got some cute stuff and liked just sitting around looking at books. read more

I really do not understand some of the previous negative reviews of Liberty Bay Bookstore in Poulsbo, WA. I wish people would leave a date they visited and the store employees name if they are going to take the time to complain about a local business and not be chicken s*** about it. This bookstore blows away Barnes and Noble. The owner is very helpful in finding what you need. No, they don't have every book there is. No one does. As a local, I enjoy the convenience of having such a wonderful bookshop to enjoy an evening in. The atmosphere is what a bookstore should strive to be and it succeeds in doing just that. By providing their loyal customers and new comers with a warm welcome. I've ordered countless books from them ranging from manga to thick novels from my favorite authors and every time I've gotten a great price and a speedy delivery to the store where I can pay for it in person. Great books selections! However, the WORST customer service EVER! My family came to visit this establishment, they were whining and my husband took them out of the store. While we were in the store, she was shaking her head and obviously annoyed. My husband saw her roll her eyes as he looked back while exiting. It's 37 degrees outside, it's cold, it's pretty crappy knowing that my 2 yo & 4yo are waiting outside as I contribute to this awful ladies paycheck. I grabbed a bunch of kid books ($30) because I want to support small shops. I want my kids to enjoy and feel welcomed at a bookstore vs. buying online. I ventured in here for the second time today and I'm such a fan of this bookstore. The staff was so helpful and they don't hover when you want to browse, but if you ask for recommendations they are very enthusiastic and eager to help. I'm usually a Barnes and Noble shopper simply for the connivence, but I definitely want to start making more of an effort to support local independent bookstores. I was so disappointed with my last experience at this bookstore. I had been given a gift card for my birthday by four of my friends. When I tried to redeem it with a few items I was told that because it didn't have a date and signature but did have a code number written in the card it wasn't valid. I had shop there a few times as I'm local and was dealing with the owner of the shop! I felt so bad as she made me feel like I was trying to cheat her and even though she recognized the employee handwriting she did not take the time to call her to verify it as she could not find the number in the pc system for the transaction. She took my phone number to say she would call me when she had the issue resolved,but did not call me. She said she was waiting for me to stop by when I did in fact go in today. The training of her staff is clearly poor and she as the owner failed in basic customer service! She did give me one of the items at no charge and said I can redeem the gift card for the full amount.I don't know about most of the public but it is going to be hard for me to go in to that shop again but I feel that my friends gift and good intentions are what's important. I will however be letting them know of my experience so they will know for future reference. I don't think all people that are in small business these days really understand good business and business management and maybe she has a book in the shop that will improve her skills in that area! read more

Pretty horrid customer service. I watched the owner dismiss simple questions ("do you have any other books by this author?" ... this doesn't deserve a sigh and a sarcastic "yeah, over there"). Later, when my children were in the store, she told me they were giving het a headache. Simply rotten. My friend found a car she had to have online at Liberty. We called and Kevin Hogan wa very helpful. He held the car until Sat. unitl we could get there for her to test drive. I know I am not the buying the car but I was with her and I have a 2 year old. They were wonderful, they blew up a balloon for him and put on cartoons for him and gave him a bag of chips. Well, with moms approval that is. My friend is very happy with the vehicle she purchased and loves driving it around. I have been to several dealerships over the years and when I go to purchase another car, I will be making the drive to Poulsbo to get my vehicle. They are the best. read more
