Thought about writing a review at Liberty Hall in the past. They would have received a 3 star rating for some issues they have apparently corrected. I must admit at being surprised to see a remodeling of sorts when I visited this past weekend. All new chairs with cup holders was a major plus. The chairs are the low back variety but much more sturdier, cleaner, and a little more comfortable than before. Sound system sounded much improved. The screens were not bad at all. The floors appeared to have been stripped and painted black. Very clean looking. Lighting appears to have been upgraded. Standing ovation for Liberty Hall. These changes were much needed and look great. The concession stand is still pretty much the same. As with most older theaters, the sodas are way too sweet and syrupy. Popcorn and drinks are still non-refillable but not a huge deal. Still serving alcohol which many people absolutely love. The staff in the theater area are still very nice and personable. One of the biggest questions I always forget to ask is why La Prima Tazzo can't somehow incorporate their business with the Liberty Hall. Not certain, but isn't the Liberty hall and Tazza owned by the same people? Sometimes you will see a door open that leads right into the Tazza from the lobby of the concession area for the Liberty Hall. Would love to grab a coffee or latte to bring in the theater if allowed. Will most definitely inquire next time I'm there. After all these years, Liberty Hall still offers that unreal birthday special. Basically, on your birthday you get a free movie ticket, movie rental, coffee from La Prima Tazza, and I think some concession items. Can't remember what exactly, but it's an unreal B-day present for yourself or significant other. Liberty Hall oozes with the ambiance from an earlier era of movie going experiences. You can still smell and see the brick (limestone?) walls inside the auditoriums. The floors still creek as you climb the stairs and walk throughout the building. Almost has a haunted house feel to it in certain parts. I highly recommend visiting the Liberty Hall movie theater to see some fabulous low budget independent films not seen around Lawrence or Western Kansas much. Plenty of parking, dining, bars, and people watching in the immediate vicinity. Hardly ever crowded and always a good experience. read more

I dig this indie theater tons and wish I would have another opportunity to go back sometime. It reminds me of Brew 'n View in Chicago, but Kansas-style! The theater is connected to their video rental store, but has a great layout and pretty good acoustics for its size. It's nice you may order beer, munchies, and popcorn at the counter before you make your way upstairs. The workers are mellow and accommodating. Check it out! read more

I think Carol R.'s review really gives the best breakdown. I would subtract one star because the seats can be so uncomfortable. And it's weird, but the seats make my neck the most uncomfortable of all, not my butt, which you'd think would be most natural. Anyway, this is a staple in Lawrence, and how can you not appreciate that 'Liberty' Hall is located right next to 'Free State' Brewery. Go Kansas! read more

I couldn't ask for anything more from a concert venue. I came here to see the Get Up Kids play after a long retirement. The Liberty Bell also shows movies. I liked how the floor had a higher area which allowed CF and I to stand at eye level of the band. I can say that no other venue that I have been to has offered. We didn't have to deal with the pushing and shoving which I have enjoyed in the past. It was a little cold waiting in line before getting inside but it was well worth it. The upstairs sitting area was nice but just went briefly to see it. The very top level had the bathroom that resembled an older building. I did notice how they served beverages and it seemed like it wasn't professional but it didn't matter to me. The acoustics were great from where we were standing and the audience added much more to the concert than I could every ask for. They knew all the songs and helped to sing everything that the band played. read more

I saw great movies here, and rented great bad movies from the store. Sometimes they would just erase the late fees I had accrued. They let me borrow the Being John Malkovich mask, and they co-sponsored John Waters' visit to KU. Give 'em all the love you have, Lawrence! read more

Liberty Hall isn't so much a place as it is an event. if you pace yourself every few weeks and just stop by to watch a flick or a show you'll get enough culture in those bones to help forget that you live in Kansas. When you dip your toes in civilization (NYC, SFO, etc) you will be asked the usual questions about Dorothy and Toto, big breasted farm girls, cow tipping, insatiable milking machines lurking behind woodwork or the wainscoting and probably something about the efficacy of all the marijuana that seems to grow in every ditch and lonely water source, planted as part of the WW II war effort and becoming a permanent part of the flora. So to reduce your chances of sounding like a dumb frat moron with his backward KU cap and that newly acquired gut from those late night Buckey's Hamburger runs, take a few trips to Liberty Hall and get a little shine on all that fancy book learning. We all learned a few things at Wescoe beach as well as inside Wescoe, no? Consider Liberty Hall an off campus finishing school. When I go to Liberty Hall I always slog along Mass street as well. This of course means getting a few drinks and checking out Love Garden. And of course Replay. I live in NYC now but still enjoy the uniqueness of what Mass street has to offer. This place is my love. I've seen seen some of the important movies and concerts of my life there. The people are wonderful. The concessions are perfect. The Video Store will be an archive to culture after streaming has laid waste to selection in exchange for only a few hot titles. Their popcorn with nacho seasoning and a beer is my happy place. This place is the history of Lawrence and entertainment in the 20th Century and now the 21st. read more

I have to give 5 stars to the video store, 4.5 for the movie theater(s) and 3 for the music venue. Ok, I knew it at as a student, but since leaving Liberty has really demonstrated more so that rental shops need to stay small and strong. My new home of the Bay Area prides itself on over the top, locally owned video stores. Great idea, poor execution. There is such a thing as too big. The most likable attribute? It's small enough that they can display the front of the video. Hey, we all judge books by their covers. At least we simple ones do. The upstairs theater makes me smile. I went on the best date of all time there. The venue can't be beat in Lawrence; it's local and it's got the neighboring beer. Unfortunately my most lucid recollections are those damn stairs... Beyond amazing staff at Liberty Hall! My fiancée and I visited on 10/15/14 for The Airborne Toxic Event concert as guests of my friend, a member of the band. I have been a guest of the band at several locations before but I have never been treated so good by staff. Every staff member (with the exception of one guy) was amazing, kind and went above and beyond to insure that we were happy and taken care of. Even the bar staff was awesome. Drinks weren't priced to high either. I would recommend this location for concerts to anyone. It is small which makes the concert experience intimate. Tons of bars in walking distance for after the show too. read more

Oh liberty Hall has ALWAYS been the bomb hands down. I graduated KU in 2004 then moved to California (cuz of my constant complaining of "the cold..."). Well now I'm back. And right back to liberty whole as well! Liberty Hall rocks okay? Indi-ish, hip, cozy, and about a thousand year-old but therein in its appeal and rightly so. I love the shows presented at the old theater. The popcorn, OMG the popcorn, enough said! Got to check out what's coming up cuz I need to get my butt out there. It does my soul good. read more

Really great place to catch a movie. The big theater is unlike anything I have been to before and feels a lot more like a music venue. Tons of leg room and a great selection of independent-ish films. They also have a great selection of beer and wine for reasonable prices. Will definitely be back now that this in so close to our new place. read more

Normally I enjoy Liberty Hall as a venue. I watched the Oscars there the other night and have been to many events there over the years. i like the ambience of the larger theater. However this afternoon after listening to an author talk in the big theater, I bought a ticket director The Favourite in The little Theater. It was nine degrees outside and there was no heat inside the Little Theater. I wore my winrer coat, hat and gloves and had a runny nose at the end of the movie. When I told the employee afterwards, he just kind of shrugged his shoulders and said it was fine in the Little Theater on Thursday and Friday. read more

I got the awesome opportunity to watch 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' the night before Halloween this last year at Liberty Hall. It was a great presentation. The tickets were cheap. And, the atmosphere was wonderful! The only thing I had to complain about is that I'm 5'9" and the balcony seating doesn't have much leg room at all. Liberty Hall is a dear old friend, and she was old WAY before I met her. Concert tip: If you are a tall person, beware of seat upstairs, because they are old-time theater seats, and you may bust a shin on the rail or row in front of you. Otherwise, this is as good a place to see a concert as I've been ... not fancy, but somehow just right, especially for a "folkie" act, such as some that I've seen here ... Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith ... but my sons would tell you when they put away the chairs downstairs, the place rocks! read more

This is an arthouse theatre. No frills. You won't find the latest 3D theme park ride here. But you will find a selection of excellent, if small movies week-in and week-out, as well as some great special engagements (like their midnight movie series). Two screens, plenty of seats, unique films. Good: Pricing, picture and sound quality, pre-show atmosphere, adjacent rental store Bad: Honestly, the AMC 30 in Olathe gets some of the more niche films this place offers earlier, though with that comes the 20 min. drive, the higher prices and the different atmosphere. Going to a movie just has a different feel than the local multiplex, and not just because of the more independent-style fare. The artful decor, the location (next to the Free State Brewery, perfect dinner-and-a-show setup) and the friendly, personable staff...it's a pleasure. read more

Today was my friend's birthday and we went to Liberty Hall to see Chef. She got a free movie ticket, popcorn, and pop! She could also rent a movie for free and get a free drink at La Prima Taza! The customer service was fantastic and now that I know about the birthday special, I'm going to have a get together there next year!!! read more

Liberty Hall is such a great place to catch an old movie. My husband and I attended the Valentine's showing of The Princess Bride, and seeing it the same way it was shown originally just added to the effect and the delightful campiness. The theatre itself maintains its original charm, and while the concession area is a bit crazy, the chance to drink a fresh Free State brew while watching an old classic on the big screen is worth the line. Kind of a local event staple. They hold events for all different ages and demographics here, and it's one of those places you just know if you live here. There's a couple niche movie theaters upstairs, and a performance space downstairs. Uniquely, it also houses a local video rental store in 2015, not something that many towns can boast. Saw the Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings show a few nights ago. I love the smallish theater, the ambiance, the crowd that was there. The show was awesome. One star lopped off of my rating for the fact that, though the view is great from all seats (almost), the seats were extremely tiny. Maybe five inches from the front of the seat to the back of the seat in front of you. Men all around me looked pained and scrunched. The place was packed with people sitting in the aisles up in the balcony. At one point I thought, if this place catches on fire, I'll just call my husband and say goodbye. There's no way everyone could have gotten out alive. I wondered if the Lawrence Fire Department ignores such things. I'd suggest strongly, Liberty Hall, that you split those shows up into two and make them both safer and more reasonably comfortable. You charge a lot of money for 2 hours of pure physical misery unless you're 5'2" and weight 98 pounds. I understand the profit motive and I know the stars may demand most of it, but you need to think about the danger and the discomfort and give the people what they pay for. $36 is a lot for many of us. I've only been here once to see a movie but when I noticed they served beer in the snack bar I did a double take. Maybe they don't have DLP projection, 3D or stadium seating but who cares when you can enjoy a cold Bud. read more

I wish that the place was as welcoming as it looked. My husband dropped me off as he went to park the car. I was excited and happy and dressed up for a night out to see a favorite movie. (Big Trouble in Little China) and went inside to escape the cold . The staff as I walked in, expecting to sell me a ticket, greeted me and I smiled and told them I was waiting for my husband. As I stood waiting right next to them they began an interesting discussion about a book that I loved. I was standing right there so I commented that it was a very good book. I was astonished at the reaction! All of them frowned and turned away as if I had committed some breach of etiquette. There were no other customers in the room at the moment and they began another conversation and friendly banter amongst themselves, walking around me very pointedly avoiding any eye contact with me and behaving as if I was invisible. It was such a bucket of cold water in the face that I had difficulty enjoying the rest of the evening. Just to see if I was imagining it I tried to speak to one of them as we were leaving and my husband was getting the car. She looked right through me, abruptly changed directions and walked away. I have no idea why they behaved this way but as I am NOT in fact, invisible I can only comment that the staff at this marvelous theater is exceptionally unfriendly. The place is otherwise wonderful and the programming is delightful. Lawrence is a great town and I love the place. Too bad the people who work there are not as nice as the theater is. read more

I went to my second show at Liberty Hall last night (Willie Nelson!) and I was again impressed by the venue. I remembered it bigger then it really is; it is such a quaint little place to see a show! It's all GA, or at least is has been the 2 times I've been there, so you really should get there a little early if you want a good spot. The upstairs is all seats, which would have been great to be sitting in, and the downstairs is pack-em-in as best you can. Which, by the way, always makes shows more fun and definately more intimate. I suppose the one negative thing is there is only one bar, so it takes a few minutes to get a drink. And they only accept cash, and they don't have an ATM on site (there's one across the street.) But other than that, it's a wonderful place. If you want a seat, get there ahead of time, and if not, just be like us and show up when it starts and weasel your way to the front. As long as your among cool people like Willie fans, you'll be accepted and loved either way! And by the way, I voted "good for kids" but only if you get there early enough to get seats upstairs. I definately wouldn't squeeze them in downstairs. read more

I don't see why you would attend any event here. The seats are unbelievably close together. It almost seems like a fire code violation. We seat in the upper part. Maybe they are closer together up there. The back of the seat in front of me was six inches from the edge of my seat. My knee caps didn't fit. Weird. read more

My favorite movie theater, hands down. Sure it may lack the THX surround sound and comfortable theater seating of today's multiplexes. But this place has personality and history. It's a beautiful location with original seating and lighting with touches of whimsy in the painting. You can tell this was a grand venue based on the mezzanine decor. I could wax on about the architecute and interior, but I'll get to the business itself. They show a variety of independent, art house and foreign films that you'd be hard-pressed to see elsewhere. It's cheaper than seeing a regular movie at the theater and they have their own concessions (variety is good and it's cheaper!). Adjoining the theater is a video store where you can rent movies (they specialize in the hard to find). Liberty Hall is not just a movie theater - they host events and concerts as well. Everyone that works here is eminently friendly. It's a must stop for entertainment in downtown Lawrence. read more
