Five starts because 1) I don't know diddly about cigars and 2) the owner (?) was the coolest, unpretentious righteous dude ever. Especially Christmas Eve when he coulda totally gauged me on a cigar that I knew nothing about. I walked in there Xmas eve and the Promenade was a cluster-F mess. Whole Foods had a bunch of rabid squirrel customers (hey, I was one of those squirrels) trying to gather their last minute nuts to share with the family before the big Christmas day. I wanted to get a stocking stuffer for the bf's father that was in town. He has a secret love of cigards (secret = bf's mom doesn't know about it) so I remembered the small cigar shop I've seen for so many years at the newly revamped Promenade. The 2 story shop had a few customers browsing the two humidors. I tried to look cool and hip like one of those well dressed women from Mad Men (except I wasn't well dressed and I looked schlepy that stressful day). After a moment or two perusing the humidor, a nice gentleman came up to me and asked if I needed help. I gave him my price range (um, something under $20 - I'm rich yo) and he didn't judge or scoff at me. He gave me a few options and when I asked if there was something a bit 'larger' than the stumpier cigar he recommended, he gave me his honest .02c and sold me one that was even better than the original ( I believe it was a 1964 Padron). This is by far my favorite place for cigars and recommendations. I was steered towards a box of Padron 7000s. They are my new favorites!

Over the years Liberty Tobacco has grown with me as I went from store bought cigarettes to ryo and the nuances of blending tubs of Bali Shag, Peter Stokkebye. Liberty was there when I matured from almost disposable corn cob pipe's to Meerschaum estate pipes and now to the subtleties of Briar pipes. My home shop is actually Greg's Cigar Grotto in Oceanside, my hometown and stomping grounds, but their pipe tobacco and ryo selection is limited which is why when I need my non cigar tobacco fix I come here, plus it's on my way home from work, they have big screen TV's and a lounge. I do prefer the larger pipe selection of the Kerney Mesa store, but this is North County's premier Tobacconist. If you want Cigar's and are willing to go that far North Cigar Grotto is the best, but there is something about the creaking wood floors, the lounge and the art gallery/dance studio across the way that draws me here. Most cigar places have all torch lighters, but for us pipe smokers we need that flinted butane with the control you can't get from bic's and zippo's. This place is a true tobacconist and yes I sometimes do pick up cigar's from here. The standard selection of CAO, Partagas, Padron, Olivia, Macanudo, Fuente's, Davidoff along with many smaller brands. As I've travelled from shop to shop I'm partial to places that have more of a selection of tubed cigar's versus individually wrapped and I'm more partial to places with more well stocked Macanudo and CAO as I personally feel they make superior quality cigars. They don't do nearly as many cigar night's or meetup/gatherings as other store, but I feel that this is more indicative of the clientele in the area. Wealthier people that can entertain their fellow cigar smokers in their homes, as well as more of a not strictly tobacco related groups. read more

Ain't no need to go anywhere else. This is the best lounge in California. Great selection if you a developed palate for truly first-class cigars. You can't find most of these cigars in other lounges in most of Southern California lounges, everyone is so friendly, this has become a everyday visit slowly when I hasn't gotten a box, prices are fair and; it's a real relaxing place if you want to sit down and just soak it up. I mainly get Padron cigars but their selection of My Father's Cigars are great too and Olivia cigars go fast but I personally don't think they have that same kick you want at the end of the day. If you want something on a budget and have a kick.. go with the Perla del Mar cigars (6 x 60) it's 9.98 a stick and built like $20 smoke. It's kicks you back and leaves you relaxed. I could easily buy these buy these two boxes at a time. If you want something real SPECIAL. I highly recommend the Padron Family Reserve No.85 Maduro or 1964 Presidente Maduro but make sure you save one for me. If you want something random and you want discover something new.. Ask the guys what you're looking like size and Natural or Maduro and watch how they help you find a new favorite smoke. Time to time I'll send someone in and BOOM I have a new favorite read more

This place in unique. Met some really great people and the prices and selection are the best around. The staff really know cigars, and if you want it, give honest knowledgeable advice and recommendations. The atmosphere is not fancy and hoity toity like the fancy lounges that play to one's ego etc; just a comfortable down to earth great place to smoke and enjoy the real life clientele, or do work using their Wi-Fi. Met some really great people..lawyers, doctors, IT brains, retired, blue collar salt of the earth people, football junkies. Guys who know cigars know this is a great place. Tucked behind the facade of the Flower Hill mall you will find here a very nice selection of cigars at reasonable prices Liberty has a small indoor smoking loft up the stairs and a few TVs to catch the game. They also have a good amount of smoking accoutrement, both daily-use and wedding present worthy. I usually just drop in quickly to pick up some sticks when I'm in the area. Read that this was a great place to go for cigars. The ratings and reviews did not translate to a great experience. I walked into a humidor that has more than a handful of empty boxes. So either, staff/owner don't care or simply lazy in cleaning up. Credit the place for having a decent selection of cigars. By far does not counter the more than handful of empty boxes sitting on the shelf. Made my selections which totaled over $100.00. Cashed out. Anticipated staff would include a moisture pack in the bag. I inquired and was told they have them, but it would cost $1.25. I hesitated, as this is the first store ever, to charge me for such an item, after spending $100.00 or more. I've shopped at numerous stores around CA and this was the first store to charge me the $1.25. So, I paid it without any objection, knowing I would be writing a review and sharing this experience with the internet, as that is absolutely ridiculous. This store will lose residual business and 100's of dollars spent in the future from this patron as well as others I have told, all because you would not include a humidity control pack. read more

Very disappointed. Stopped in because my humidor was empty (not the first time here) and I heard an ad on the radio for a special of 3 cigars, a cutter and a lighter and figured I could always use another throw-away lighter and cutter... Upon arrival, I asked about it. The guy there said "oh, are they running that again? I don't have any here, but I'm going down to the other shop tomorrow and I'll ask them about it". Uh, isn't that what a PHONE is for? Ever hear of customer service? Did he really expect me to come back the next day for his crappy lighter, cutter and cigars? I left and went to Smoker's Land in Penasquitos and bought enough cigars to fill my humidor. Thanks for nothing. read more

I have been here several times now and I really like their selection of cigars and they are marked at the right price and don't overcharge like a lot of other cigar stores will do. This location is really nice! I like the relaxed setting this place has, with an area you can sit and smoke and the owner is so friendly to talk to. I discovered this place by accident a few weeks ago, and I'm so glad I did. 2-story minimalist, old-school, leather couches, chill vibe. As a female cigar smoker for 15 years, it's always fascinating to see the reaction of others when I light up....and I felt absolutely at home here. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, just off the coast - that 1 'gap' weekend between the NFL Championships and Superbowl...and while the recaps were playing on the big screen on the 2nd floor, no-one had to be forced to listen....I really enjoyed this place...in fact, writing this review made me realize I should go back for another one tonight after watching this beautiful same in Carlsbad. read more

I prefer my regular haunt in Kearny Mesa, as it has that old school tobacconist vibe there. The photos on the wall, bigger space, and lots and lots of various areas to smoke your Macanudo. The outdoor patio for sunny days, and inside is always great. Especially on Fridays, when they show movies and play cards. I think this location fits nicely in the Del Mar mall, but geez....this mall is always dead. I don't know why, either. Even when the movie theatre was in this location, there wasn't a lot of foot traffic here. I used to like the Morrison Hotel art gallery, with great photographs, yet that disappeared. A few of the shops here I loved have gone. I hope Liberty can survive this location, because I love the business, the folks that run it, and it seems like this should be a great location. read more

Really enjoy my mornings here pre-races at nearby Del Mar. I grab a cigar or two and sit upstairs and read the Form and just have a nice chill couple of hours before the madness. The humidor is well stocked with a variety of established and new brands. Humidity seems good...the cigars smoke well right out of the humidor which is not always the case at other cigar lounges I visit. Staff is friendly, and everyone I've met there is polite, gregarious, and respectful. Really like the customers it attracts, no d-bags. Plenty of seating and new TVs. Ventilation is good and not drafty. The only -1 star? No bathroom, you gotta go to the one in the shopping center or Starbucks. Truly a minor point, but... Prices are in line with the California and the general neighborhood. read more

It's a hard place to find, unlike most of the neighboring stores, Liberty's only entrance is from the back side of the mall. But once you step inside it was worth the search! The friendly staff (Chuck and Dan especially) will immediately get up to assist you. There is a massive cigar humidor with many great brands including Davidoff, Cohiba, La Gloria Cubana and I think they might have Liga Privadas which are almost impossible to find on the west coast. They also have some great cigarettes too. They mostly have higher end brands like Dunhill and Nat Sherman. One thing many smoke shops don't smell are the Nat Sherman cigarettes and of course they have the normal MCD's and Hint of Mint. They have many filtered cigars too from Davidoff, Djarum and a couple other cool brands. They also have a good amount of Marlboros and American spirits. Their selection of pipe tobacco is fantastic too! They have jars filled with tobacco of all kinds of flavors. They of course have the classic brands like Wølarsen. They will allow you to sample any tobacco they offer which is very, VERY nice! Lastly they offer a selection of snus, ashtrays, pipes, torch lighters, zippo lighters, unfiltered cigarillos. They also have a fantastic sitting area where you can smoke inside. I'll even light up a cigarette while browsing in the store. They have some TV's on the bottom floor and a large table where you can work on your computer. The decoration is also super nice! They have various framed posters of old fashioned cigarette adds from Camel and even Chesterfield! They have decorative ashtrays and traditional furniture which is very comfortable! Lastly the place just has a great atmosphere, many customers are regulars (including myself) and know everyone knows each other! We'll all watch the game and smoke some great cigars! I strongly recommend Liberty to any smoker especially if your like me and you smoke cigarettes, pipe and cigars and want a fun, comfortable atmosphere with a high end selection, Liberty is for YOU! read more

I purchased a lighter from Liberty Tobacco that immediately smelled of butane, had an improper flame, and tasted of lighter fluid. Upon discovering these malfunctions, I attempted to return the product, however the worker informed me that she needed managerial approval. She took my information, however never called back. Between then and August I made multiple additional attempts to return the product (over the phone and in the store). On my last attempt, I attempted once again to return the product with the manager present. I was met with extreme hostility and a degrading tone. I explained repeatedly my issues and concerns with the lighter, and he proceeded to insinuate a lack of morals within myself, and to tell me that it works fine even though he had similar problems with it (however my reasons for returning the product were for malfunctions). When I asked for the return policy, he told me that I "will not return something just because you do not want anymore". I requested for an explanation of the return policy which he failed to give. I decided to leave the store extremely dissatisfied and insulted, with my product still with me. After a few moments of thought, I returned to the store to inform the manager how he made me feel and that he treated me extremely poorly (in a mature and appropriate manner which he lacked). I placed the lighter on his desk, and as I exited the store his only response was "Bro, just give it to a friend". This entire experience with Liberty Tobacco has made me extremely upset, and it should be known to possible customers. Definitely a place to avoid. read more

I am familiar with the Liberty store in Kearny Mesa, and have never had a problem so last Sunday morning, I decided to swing by to pick up a few smokes on the way to the track at the Villa de la Valle store......Never again..... There was no one in the store except a older guy on his laptop. I said good morning, his reply was "What do you want?" I told him I was picking up a few smokes for the track, and was going to check the humidor, his response was " we don't have much left in there right now..." I ignored him and walked in expecting to see bare shelves, but it was fully stocked I found a few I wanted and proceeded to pay. This guy's attitude was like he was doing me a favor, I spent close to $40 bucks and he had attitude! I don't expect anyone to kiss my ass, but at least be courteous to people who are spending money in your store. This guy needs to quit and do something he likes doing, or if it's his store sell and get out where you don't need to deal with the public. I smoke stoogies as a hobby and have a big group of people that partakes with me, I have let everyone know to steer clear of this place! read more
