Lidl is a welcome addition to the grocery scene in Kips Bay, serving Murray Hill as well. I have never been in a Lidl store, so this was a first for me. There is a Trader Joe's on the other side of Third Avenue and a Fairway on Second Avenue. Walk into Lidl and see the choices, with good produce selections and an array of baked goods. Where are the plastic bags for loose produce? They stock everything one would expect at a grocery store and they have a large space in the basement at this location. The layout has all the refrigerated and freezer cases along the right side and along the walls of the space as you walk in after descending the escalator. They have an elevator to the left side as you enter from street level. They still have some kinks to work out with their layout, but it's organized fairly well for a new store. Lidl is carrying prepared foods in direct competition with Trader Joe's: Indian prepared foods, orange chicken, some Italian prepared food selections and some Asian bagged and frozen foods easily prepared. There are plenty of options in meat, poultry, and dairy as well as frozen and fresh seafood; though, the latter is not their strong suit and the edge goes to Traders for cheese. Prices were in line with those one finds at Traders and my total was in line with what one would expect at Traders. Both stores carry items the other does not and Fairway cannot be topped for selection. Lidl carries more inventory than a typical Traders and more closely resembles a regular grocer in this manner. I already prepared and liked Lidl's Chicken Tikka Masala and it was good and very close to what one would find at Traders. Bottom line, if you like Traders, you'll like Lidl. You'll appreciate the way Traders triages and manages their line better than Lidl and Traders manages more cashiers than Lidl in typically smaller spaces. Lidl does not help you with bagging your groceries the way Traders does and Lidl has some self-checkout lines, which some people like and some do not. I fall into the latter category. Nevertheless, my cashier at Lidl was friendly and efficient. The future is looking very good for Lidl at this location. 3.9 stars

Recently opened Lidl has groceries at a reasonable price. Sort of reminds me of an Aldi. They even have a bakery. I got a single croissant for 49 cents! Just use the wax paper to grab items and they have bags for you to place your bakery items in. A gallon of milk for under $3? It's rare to see that in NYC! Self check out is easy and the staff is the nicest! Bonus there's a restroom (just ask for a code), elevator, and escalator. One employee watched my items as I went to the restroom. So kind of him!

Lights were off. Security guard chastising us to return shopping cart. Self checking area was poorly laid out.

She went above & beyond as I attempted to shop with my then 8 month old & my 6-year-old who had just came from the dentist & was under sedation. She saw me struggle as my daughter was dizzy from the sedation medicine, and she assisted me through the entire store and opened her register to ring me up. She was so understanding to a single mom just trying to navigate shopping after my 6-year-old had a major procedure done. I know to other people this may look like something so small but to me it meant the world & I fight back tears as I write this. THANK YOU SO MUCH LEANA WITH LUV & Appreciate. Oh, and to touch on the food there we know Trader Joe's is one of the best places to choose food in New York City since we're in a food desert so I'm glad Trader Joe's is around.!!

A few staple items were also out of stock, which was a bit disappointing for a regular grocery run. That said, the produce section was excellent--really fresh and well stocked, probably the highlight of the store. I'll be coming here more often while my usual UWS location is under renovation since it's still convenient for me, especially given it used to be my old neighborhood. It's not a bad store at all, just a very different energy, and it'll take a bit of getting used to.

We have developed a congenial friendship which was founded on La Fermière yogurts. Emre knows that I price shop so invariably I know when the time is right to buy these delicious yogurts at Eden. I often buy Siggi yogurts as here they are $1.99 each. The ladies - Dolores, Affou, Mamata, Savita, Tofu - at the checkout are friendly, kind and remember customers. A few speak French which I practice with them. Being originally Greek, the Dolmas in the prepared food section, are plump and particularly tasty. It's worth buying a few to take home. Adam looks taciturn but always is kind to me. He is behind the deli counter preparing sandwiches and always gives me a quarter pound of the Jambon de Paris. Miguel and Medina are also here. A loyalty card is worth having and once having accumulated many points I paid the princely sum of $1.61 for a pretty bouquet of roses in assorted colors that cost $11.99. Now that's a steal! Eden Gourmet is the sister supermarket to my beloved sadly closed Eden Gourmet of 14th street. This too is packed to the brim with fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses, dairy, chicken and meats. A large variety of sparkling waters, frozen entrees, ice creams and assorted temptations are here too. A small bakery has cakes and pastries available. I pop in often to get milk or to see what's new and always to say hello to everyone. I always feel happy coming to Eden Gourmet Marketplace!

You'll get all the usual grocery store sections, including fresh produce and a deli counter in the back. There isn't a ton of variety, with maybe two or three options for most items. But those options are consistently high quality. Whoever is stocking the shelves has good taste! The setup for paying is a bit weird, they've got a long counter up front in lieu of the usual registers with lanes. It can make lines a bit confusing during busier times, but not a dealbreaker by any means.
