I have it going to this Food town since I moved into the neighborhood. Everybody is friendly they know my kid and the prices are reasonable as any food town around town. It's surprisingly good selection of beer. What makes this one different is because we have been going there for many years everyone in the Food town knows us they go out of their way to make sure we get anything we need. If it's not in stock they make sure to see if it is possible for them to get it an example of that is the size of diapers that we needed one time. Now they consistently stock that size of diaper for us. The only reason why it is not five stars for me is that the isles are very thin and depending on what time you go it can be jampacked or food deliveries make it very difficult to navigate. read more

This place is a very small supermarket located in Harlem. I just moved to this neighborhood and I had no choice, I went there and this stocking employee was following me everywhere in the store, apparently because I had sunglasses, simply because I wanted to protect myself from possibly infested people with corona virus there, and he thought I was going to steal groceries, literally a really awkward experience, and I don't plan to return. When I realized he was chasing me, I called him up and he ignored me. Then a manager or supervisor came to help, asked him where the teas were and he pointed out to the area. Very disappointed. I'm sure this employee doesn't even have work documents to be there. Don't judge a book by the cover, judge a person by the heart. See attached a receipt of my groceries. If I am being completely honest, I have never been a fan of Foodtown markets in the city. Past experience caused me to expect dirty, over crowded aisles with almost empty shelves, along with a really sad selection. This particular store is located right around the corner from my apartment. Because I had pre-concieved Foodtown judgements rolling around in my head, I never stopped in...until last Wednesday, and boy am I glad I did! I was completely wrong, this market is fantastic! An absolute upgrade from any other grocery store in the neighborhood. The shelves are stocked, the produce is fresh and they have an expansive deli counter with just about any Boar's Head product you can imagine. They also pack a ton of product into a medium sized space. If you are in the area and looking to pick up some groceries, do not hesitate! read more

This was a Met Food. They closed and re-opened as a Foodtown, but only after a massive redesign of the store.  This may be the biggest demonstration of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" I've ever seen.  This is terrible. They've basically decided that it would be a good idea to make it hard for you get what you want.  You cannot enter the store without walking the full length of it at least twice to leave.  You MUST take a long walk past the produce in order to get anything else.  They actually put a FENCE there to PREVENT you from just entering the store without walking through the produce. And even if you're there to buy produce, you have to walk ALL the way back to get to the register and pay for it. This is not the suburbs, where people go to the supermarket once a week in a car.  This is a city, where people go frequently and buy in small quantities, because they're on foot, and it's close.  When you're getting (say) just a loaf of bread and some eggs, it is incredibly irritating to have to walk up and down long cavernous aisles to get some bread, and then do it again just to get to the register. I get it: they hope that if you walk by more stuff, you'll buy more stuff.  But that inconveniences ME - the customer. It's stupid when there's a CTown right nearby, and a Key Food right nearby.  If you make shopping inconvenient, people will go to the other stores first, where they can just get what they want and leave.   I don't know what they spent on the redesign, but it must have been a ton.  And they've made themselves number 3 - the worst - in a neighborhood with 3 stores.  I'm only going to go here now if something I want is on sale, or if I can't find it at one of the other two.  This has become a store to avoid. read more

So this is the worst store. As I entered the delivery people or stock people nearly hit me with their little hand trucks. The aisles are dangerously blocked with a ton of boxes. Fast paced stock persons move without looking for anyone else. As I am bumped and pushed by their personnel to ease their movement ,I am helping an older woman get some mustard. None of the store personnel are available to help. Whom ever runs this store should be fired. He....and this has to be just another self centered male is a miserable failure in the customer service department. This foodtown is pretty good. It is absolutely HUGE. They have a wide variety of foods and deals to offer. They have their own loyalty program which is pretty cool too- Spend a certain amount of money to earn points to get free food which a lot of other grocery stores do not have. The have foods that accommodate to people's needs- such as vegan, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, gluten free, low fat, etc. This place has two cons- The lines and the prices. The place is almost always full, and the lines can get really long. One time I had to wait about 10 minutes on line to finally get to the cashier. In terms of the prices, you can definitely find better prices at many other grocery stores. If you are on a low budget for food, this is not the place for you. Some other things that this Foodtown has going for it is they have a coin to cash exchange machine and a key copier, which are cool features to have in a grocery store. read more

Anyone giving Foodtown a negative review has clearly never lived in the hood and been forced to deal with an actually bad grocery store. Okay, we get it, this is no Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, but shit, this place is leagues above a C-Town or a Fine Fare or a Bravo. Foodtown is small, sure, but they pack a lot into their little footprint. They have an extremely legit beer selection, a respectable selection of produce, good meats, and somehow they even manage to pack in a little deli in the corner. The prices are good and if you don't have a card the ladies at the checkout hook it up by swiping their store card so you get the deals (I hope I don't blow up their spot by saying this). That said, it's time to call out Yelp Poster "Joey R" (see his review below). Joey, I really feel for you that you have to walk vaguely near "these people" trying to make a buck or two by redeeming their recyclables at the little kiosk right by Foodtown. Man the fuck up, hoss. I love love love Foodtown. This teeny tiny market is a gem in the neighborhood. They are cheap and I eat very well and very healthily shopping here. I supplement with visits to other stores every other month or so but this keeps me going. Incredible selection of vegan food items including go veggie cheese products, soyrizo, prepared falafel, tofurky sliced deli meats and your usual veggie dogs/burgers. There is also an incredible selection of gluten free pastas if you're into that kind of thing and bobs red mill products! read more

First time visiting after the rebuild/restructure. Gotta say, 3.5 stars! Still enough of the old frustrating employee what not to warrant a round down, but SOLID improvement with multiple VERY accommodating, SUPER helpful employees (one who helped me even checked in ten minutes afterward to see if I needed further assistance! THAT'S what's UP!) and store improvements to kinda make me wish I still lived in the 'hood! They now offer a better balance of brands across the board and much greater variety to satisfy those accustomed to Key Foods up to those used to Gristede's. They carry Di Bruno Brothers spreads, the produce is SOOOO much fresher than it used to be, they have a REALLY awesome artisanal cheese section - which includes charchuterie items - better types of packaged meats and deli items, cleaner, brighter....while staying true to items long time residents are used to getting here. Just an awesome upgrade! If you low-starred or weren't happy with them before, I'd encourage you give 'em another whirl! Hopefully you'll also be impressed! read more

The manager here is surprisingly nice, and tries to cater to the locally changing demographics. For instance, there has been an uprising of organic veggies and even a decent amount of vegan things like tofu, tempeh, vegan cheeses etc. The store could use some work in renovation, but per my last trip here a couple days ago when they were knocking down a wall by the veggies (hopefully expanding the selection) this is already underway! With the completion of gentrification in Harlem; it bring with it major upgrades. My previous review of this food supplier was a solid (2) becuase of its poor quality of food and lack of choices. Well no more; this place has experienced a major make over in offerings and aesthetics. The produce section is fesh and well attended to, the stakes have been raise on their organic/vegan game and the beer selection is plentiful. They have redesign the look of the facility with wider aisle and exposed brick throughout. I am stil a little confused on the crowded unorganized checkout line(s) set up but I am sure they will sort that out eventually. Ironically, all these great changes are happening as I prepare to relocate to a more affordable area. I am just glad I was able to experience the change for the good before I depart read more

Oh Foodtown. Your poor coma induced zombie staff needs a pick me up...or maybe some better lighting? Its the only gig in the area and right off the train stop so convenient yes. I do suspect some of the items on the shelves haven't been touched/dusted/acknowledged since the late 70's. That includes some of the perishable items. There are most definitely aisles people don't even walk down. The bottle recycling machine outside is the most happening spot with a constant line of can redeeming enthusiasts. Give that poor machine a break! Foodtown must give out hundreds of dollars a day to these people. I will admit Foodtown has remotely cleaned up her act (new signs and new windows) since I have lived here, but it's a far cry from anything good. (It is also not the WORST grocery in Manhattan)The prices are not great either and I rarely find anything on sale. (either sold out or just not for me) The gourmet items they do carry have quite the price tag too. Produce is on the up and up and improving, and for anyone thats wondering they DO have clam juice. read more

Super cramped! Went in for the first time today to pick up some pantry essentials(rice and beans) and was kind of overwhelmed by the small space. The aisles are maybe 4 feet across(enough for you and a cart) and the shelves are packed! The overall experience was great though. The cashier was quick and efficient(no inane chitchat) and I appreciated that because I was in a rush. Two points off for the small size and cramped, unkempt store appearance. If you can stomach it then head to Foodtown. Better than the gross Pathmark down the street. read more

Its produce section is to die for and it has tons of healthy options for breakfast food for families on the go and also has a wonderful milk and juice section. Great local grocery store. Has all the essentials stocked and a friendly staff. Don't go there near 4:30-6:00ish. I know that it may be your time to shop but you'll be waiting longer in line to get your food rather than just waiting to shop later. This location is not as cramped as others but definitely tight. I still go to Whole Foods for my meat and some produce, but if it's last minute, Foodtown is always good and available. Great deals, definitely sign up for their card because you can get really inexpensive stuff!! read more

I always forget to shop at this store, forgoing it for larger treks to Fairway (which is of course wonderful and dreamy) or getting Fresh Direct when I am in a hurry. That's a big mistake that I am going to stop making! The people are super nice, polite, and helpful. There is a machine that makes (pretty good) fresh coffee, for $.75 a cup (but you'll need to put quarters in) and the guy at the sandwich counter might give you some real milk for it if you ask nice (powdered creamer is next to the machine). This is a very very good place for shopping sales and stocking up on basics for the pantry. The meat is often very reasonably priced and the quality is fine (not Fairway, but totally fine, and there are decent prices on things like oxtail, lamb breast, etc). I am always surprised how great and varied the selection is. The produce is good, and there are many choices. Read the circular and be amazed how much you will save on your pantry basics. Ok, don't forget that you can check out the circular on line at foodtown.com. Then you can know if anything really important will be on sale. Also, free delivery with purchase of $35 (in the area). Finally a decent local grocery store. My wife and I moved to Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill about four months ago and have been struggling to find a decent grocery store. Our summer Sunday's were spent trekking down to upper west side to go to Trader Joes and hauling our groceries back. When we didn't feel like taking two hours out of our weekend to do that, we would normally go to Key Food to tide us over. As people have previously mentioned, Food Town isn't a Trader Joes or Whole Foods but it's also definitely not Key Food or C Town. The store was clean, meticulously organized, and had a huge variety relative to its size. Best of all, there were sales on at least one brand of every major food category so if you aren't brand loyal, you probably won't have to pay $1.75 for a single Greek yogurt or $5.99 for a box of cereal. Their produce and meats were fresh. I refused to ever buy poultry from Key Food but would have no problem doing so here. They also had a nice beer selection. Here's to hoping they don't change. read more

This grocery store is average or below, and it's all too common around my neighborhood. The produce is limited (and somehow doesn't last very long) and costs more ($2 for a small head of lettuce for example). Many items are put on the shelves without prices, and the pricing for certain items is unclear. I frequently look at the product, think I'm going to pay one price, and find out upon checkout that the actual price is more (the most visible price being a 'discount price' with your 'club card'). They are currently doing construction with the store still operating, so the products are covered with dust from the ceiling. Did anyone check to see if the ceiling materials being dismantled are safe to breathe? I doubt it. I want to have a neighborhood grocer, but I fear that a 'grocery gallery' will be opened before this one improves. I am shopping elsewhere more and more. read more

Foodtown - Foodtown quality - Grocery Near Me - New York, New York

This is the nearest grocery store to my house so it's convenient for me to pop in and get my shopping done as needed. It has come a long way since I first started shopping here about 2 years ago when it was a mess visually! Since undergoing major renovations and an ownership change, the store is becoming beautiful and more pleasant to shop in. There is a larger selection of baked goods actually made in the store and it is arranged nicely in the front. The prices have stayed pretty reasonable throughout the changes and they offer a lot of great sales with the membership cards. The biggest complaint I have with this store is the customer service. Although the store may have undergone a face lift, the staff has yet to change their old ways. They are rude AF, unwelcoming, and unfriendly. I can walk up any day to the register and say "hi, how are you?" And receive silence as the clerk mindlessly scans my items. Not greeting is one of my biggest pet peeves that I cannot stand. Greeting is the gateway to a great customer experience that can possibly determine whether or not a customer will return. Lucky for them, I have to come here. If the customer service improves, so will my star rating of this store. read more

This place is right next to my apartment, so I'm bias to its convenience for sure... but its a great addition to the neighborhood. Sometimes they have good deals on produce and boxed goods, and other than that they're good pricing for the city. Surprisingly they have some decent produce, too. It's a smaller store, so they don't have EVERYTHING you would find in a larger FoodTown, but it gets the job done! read more

I had a very bad experience with the Cod Fish that I bought at the Foodtown Supermarket located between Crosby Avenue and East Tremont in the Bronx. Yesterday, July 6, 2011, I purchased Cod Fish from the fish market located in this supermarket. After I washed the fish and seasoned it, I covered with a lid. After a few minutes I lifted the lid and then, I saw that this fish had a worm alive. The worm was starting to come out of the fish. I got terrified when I saw this. I never expected to see a worm in a fish that I was planning to eat. I do not want to buy anything from this supermarket. read more

Today, 4/27, I called the Foodtown 756 St Nicholas's number. They said it will reopen maybe the 1st or 2nd week of May. I think they are tossing all the non-organic stuff, replacing it with real foods (sans artificial pesticides,) and therefore it's taking them a bit longer! If you use only organic for...one month, and then try to eat a non-organic apple, you'll notice that it tastes like Black Flag or Raid, or turpentine! And most, if not all US beer has glyphosate in it! read more
