Don't waste your money. I was visiting the area and my wife went to get me a sandwich. She calls me and tells me a philly cheese steak is $8 for half and $16 for a whole. I was like, I'm not that hungry get me the half. My asked if the onions are cooked, and the didn't know. How can she not know? So my wife brings me the sandwich. This thing was so small. The bag was heavier than the sandwich. I open it up to find a steak-um on a grocery store roll, no cheese, that's it. What a joke! I was so mad I wanted to return it but the drive was too far. We discovered the Boxcar Express on Yelp. We were visiting the area and looking for a quick, non-chain lunch. After reading other reviews, we decided to give it a try. As you walk in, you can definitely see the hobo/boxcar theme. The menu is on the wall. You order at the counter from a selection of sandwiches and nachos. There is a wide variety of options - which are served on white or rye bread. I chose the turkey and swiss on white. The bread was very soft and fresh. My husband had the ham and swiss on rye. The rye bread was equally as good. Everyone in the restaurant had an order of the nachos, so I can only assume they are fantastic. They also have some unique side items - pudding, strawberry fluff, etc. Donuts, cookies, and other sweets were available for dessert. They have a backroom that was reserved for a party. Hungry Hobo is the best sub shop that I have ever eaten at. The sandwiches are made to order with fresh ingredients. It's been in Galesburg since I was a little kid. I can remember going there with my parents and watching old cartoon movies in the backroom. They have a very large dining area, so there is never a problem getting a table. All orders are taken at the counter cafeteria style. They have a wide variety of sandwiches and potatoes. The potatoes are huge and delicious. I've also been told that the nachos are good. Since moving away from Illinois, this is one of few restaurants that I make sure I visit when I'm in town. It's good if you have kids too because they have a small game area in the backroom where families can eat without disturbing the main dining area. read more

Simple, slightly run-down hole-in-the-wall place with inexpensive food. Sandwiches were good. Kids meals were under $4. My baked potato was covered in processed cheese sauce instead of melted cheddar as listed on the menu. I would have ordered a sandwich instead had I known. read more

The name has changed to Boxcar Express same good foot as before. Whole wheat bread is outstanding on any of the sandwiches. The location is off the street a bit hard to find but worth the looking. Great place for a pick up sandwich. read more

I will call it Hungry Hobo for life but it is pretty good. When the name changed, the size of everything, especially the potatoes, decreased. Prices are mediocre. Food is very good though for lunch type food. Pretty much baked potatoes with your choice of toppings, sub sandwiches, and then some side items like cookies, cinnamon rolls, chips, soup, etc. The nachos are basic but cheap and good. Love their cheese sauce! Not nacho flavored like most cheese sauce. Always packed at lunch, better off getting carry out. Staff is so-so. They don't really talk much. For sub sandwiches, it beats subway hands down.The bread is soft 99.9% percent of the time,the meat is sliced to order so it doesn't lose its flavor, the potatos are big and not tough from overcooking,and has a good variety of ways to order a potato. read more
