Review Visit: September 12th, 2016 If I had to be stranded on any island with a dog, it would be a Coney Dog. Coney dogs are something I discovered my love for since I started traveling in 2012. A nice hot dog in a bun with meat, onions and mustard. Hot dogs are like burgers and pizza. Almost endless customization. Coney Island has a menu to prove it. I ordered a Jalapeno Cheese and a BBQ dog. $2.50 a piece. Super cheap in my books! The Jalapeno Cheese was super good, but the BBQ dog was amazing! This place gets a 5/5 in my book. Some people may be put off by the...cluttered and dingy inside... but if you can look past that... you will be dreaming of a return trip just like I am. read more

What brought me here was the recommendation of many people. And it's historic place to eat. Pleasantly surprised! Wasn't expecting much cause it's a hot dog joint and I usually don't order or go to places that sell such because it's something I can make at home or if you have a Costco you can get a hotdog and a soda for $1.50. The hotdog's were really tasty and good. There was no thick casing on them. They were tasty and I ordered two I could almost eat three I don't do bags of chips or anything on the side just give me my dogs and I did a Powerade drink and it was like 10 bucks and change. read more

Whenever I want a really great hot dog or a mud puppy that beats every other kind of specialty dog I've ever tasted, I go to Coney Island! Chicago Dogs, Chili Dogs, Coney Dogs; this place has it all and they don't kid around. They even have the really awesome glass bottled sodas that are so hard to find anywhere else. I love cream soda with a passion and I think that the stuff they have beats pretty much anything I've tasted from a grocery store. At some point I'm gonna have to figure out if I can order a case of the stuff from them. I definitely recommend Coney Island. Best place for an awesome hot dog, hands down. read more

Coney Island is a fantastic little small business. It can suffer from some of the small business frustrations (small area, long lines, non-modern decor), but it still has a lot of personality that makes it worth a visit. The hot dogs were pretty good and very affordable, and the entire place is filled with the touch of personality that isn't too common in restaurants anymore. PROS: -Really cute small business. Definitely has a local, small business feel to it. -Decor is really retro and cute. The majority of the store is outfitted in antique and collectible Coke products - bottles, toys, etc. They've even made small planes out of soda cans that they've hung from the ceiling. -Decent types of retro seating. You have some bar stools at a bar (with a TV!) and some table and chair set-ups. Not a ton of room, but it seems to be enough room to enjoy a place to eat without feeling like others are in your private areas. -They are equipped for orders to-go. You can come in, order, and take your order home. -You can watch them make your hot dogs right in front of your face. They cook the hot dogs, slide them into the bun, and top them right at the counter where you've ordered (hence why the line gets backed up pretty easily). -Hot dogs were not burned or overly charred. It was basically perfect. They don't seem to offer a steamed option here - just dogs on the grill. -Hot dogs were definitely good. I wasn't as fond of one of mine, but I really loved the other one. I was fond of using silverware (which they offer) to cut them up as they're pretty topping loaded, but if you're okay with a bit of a mess, they're totally hand-holdable as well. CONS: -The building and area is a bit small - especially near the ordering area. As filling an order can take a bit, there's a back-up as the line hits the front door and causes a bit of a problem. It's awkward, and I constantly felt like I was standing in the way of someone. -They only offer plastic, throw-away silverware. This works okay for most of the hot dog, but it isn't so great for pickles or some of the toppings if you want to cut them. -Seating is relatively limited. The entire place also definitely seems like it's starting to see some wear and tear. Nothing is dirty, but it doesn't look particularly shiny or new either. The lighting is particularly low in most of the restaurant as well. -They seem to use almost-entirely all disposable items. I can understand why they might use throw-away plates, bottles, silverware, etc., but it's certainly not particularly environmentally-friendly. They also seem to sell bottled sodas/drinks without any recycling area (I could have missed it). -Definitely focused on the hot dogs. Quite a few hot dogs to choose from. There is nowhere where the hot dogs are explained, however. You'll see the price for a "Chicago Dog", but even in their small, paper menu, nothing describes what a Chicago dog actually includes. A Galesburg institution. They offer a dozen or so styles of dogs, but the other stuff on their menu is also delicious. I've had the chicken salad sandwich (on some fancy-schmancy wheatberry bread) as well as their pulled pork sandwich. I get the potato salad almost every time I go. It's made by a local farmer, and I could probably eat a couple pounds of it in one sitting. Oh, and root beer freaking floats. Mmmm. What seals the deal about this place is 1) its timelessness, and 2) the staff. They love me there - I feel like a rock star. The folks who own Coney Island also own the laundromat next door. A couple times I've seen them run over to the laundromat to grab something they ran out of. Pretty cool. read more

How have I not written a review for this place?? The Coney Dog will change your view of the world; I promise. In fact, I was taking my hazwoper training course for work and my instructor struck up a conversation with me as he lived in Galesburg and I went to school there, and it concluded with a 10 minute conversation about the greatness of the Coney Dog. This is one of my favorite places in the world. Many a hung-over Saturday morning/afternoon has been spent sitting at the comforting bar chowing down on delicious hot dogs and staring at the little coca-cola mementos that adorn the restaurant. The staff is super friendly and when I was on my year-long (or so) stint as a vegetarian they always remembered me and threw on some veggie dogs right when I walked through the door... and, I might say, they are the best veggie dogs I've ever had. When I'm in town, I am always sure to stop by Coney Island... and always will. ::sigh:: **Be forewarned... they have super weird hours and are not open on Sunday. read more

Can't believe I have lived in Galesburg four months and just tried Coney Island, awesome. My new guilty pleasure. Had two coney dogs, they are topped with brown mustard, "coney sauce" (chili), and onions, bag of Kettle Chips and black berry soda. A great variety of drink flavors. read more

Seriously! This place rocks. They have awesome glass coke bottles along with other Fanta flavors. The two who run it are son and daughter and have been running it all their lives. The kindest people you can meet. I always get the BBQ dogs with a bit of slaw. It may not look like much, but these aren't just hot dogs you make at home. They have old recipes for their toppings. Too bad it's in Galesburg, and not in the quad cities! Highly recommend. read more

Came here because we were craving hot dogs. Not a bad little place. Food was decent, but nothing to write home about. Some of the tables against the wall that look like old school desks were kinda hard to get in and out of, but that's probably our own fault for choosing to sit there instead of at a regular table. read more

Grew up with a A&W drive in and a hometown cafe. This is the best of both worlds. Food is awesome and the store is a blast from the past.

It use to be Kens Coney Island in the old days when I use to get a bag of coney dogs and a bottle of soda and sit in the wooden school seat to eat. Recently came back to Galesburg from California where a coney dog out here is really a chili dog. Not the same. I got two coney dogs and a soda and was amazed that they hadn't changed and still tasted like Kens. Best around. Highly recommended and enjoy the eclectic decor. read more

Jump in your Delorean and hit 88 miles an hour cause your going back in time. The hotdogs where perfect but the place was so wonderful. Like eating lunch in the 1920s. . And so much to look at and take in. Great place a real treasure. read more

You can't expect fine dining from a hole in the wall mom and pop loaded with memorabilia and beat up lunch counter. Dogs are steamed not grilled if that's an issue for you. Also serve the Midwestern treat of maid rite or steam burger or loose meat depending on your grade school cafeteria cook's name for them. read more

Coney Island is a great place to go for a change of pace. It's nice to see all the old memorabilia on the walls. I remember when my dad use to take me there as a kid and little has changed. If you are looking for variety in the menu then this probably isn't for you. If you want a great variety of hot dogs and similar items then this is the place for you. My only complaint is that there really isn't anything for my young child. I got her a hot dog which interestingly is the same price as a loaded coney dog. read more

This isn't "kitschy", this is really like stepping back in time! This place has not changed in the decades it has been open.......from the decor to the menu (only the prices unfortunately!!!).
