I'm not sure where to begin. I had been taking my dog to this clinic for a few years since moving to South Riding, and he seemed to like them. I thought, "This might be a good place." That was until my experience this past week. Last Wednesday, my dog started making unusual sounds that initially resembled growling but progressed into a gasping noise, as though he couldn't breathe through his nose. By Friday morning, we decided to take him to see Dr. Murphy, whom he had seen before. She recommended imaging, blood work, and a wellness checkup. We agreed and were told the process would take 1-2 hours. Later, we received a call informing us that everything looked great and there was nothing concerning. I wasn't entirely confident in that response, but when they asked, "Isn't that good news?" I trusted the professional advice and took him home. Unfortunately, as the night went on, his symptoms worsened. We recorded videos to document his condition and contacted Dr. Murphy the next morning. She assured us it was normal and suggested cough medicine and using a humidifier. Despite telling her he hadn't been able to eat or drink since Wednesday, she maintained that he was fine. Following her advice, we picked up the medicine and tried administering it. Later that night, we noticed blood dripping from his mouth and rushed him to the ER. Tragically, our boy didn't make it. The ER staff quickly discovered a large mass growing in his throat, which had been obstructing his airway. He was so weak that no treatment plan could be initiated. Dr. Murphy's negligence and misdiagnosis caused him to endure unnecessary suffering in his final days. While it may not have been possible to save him, identifying the issue earlier could have allowed us to provide comfort instead of letting his condition deteriorate to the point of bleeding and gasping for air. During his last hour, he was fully intubated and on 100% oxygen just so we could say goodbye. After his passing, Dr. Murphy admitted she didn't check his throat because he bites. As a veterinary professional, she should know how to handle an animal in pain or should have informed us of her limitations. The ER in Vienna identified the mass within minutes, while we wasted hours, money, and trust at this clinic, only to be told our struggling dog was "fine." Adding to the pain, it took over three days to get a returned call after leaving multiple messages explaining what had happened. There was no remorse or acknowledgment of their negligence. Please, be cautious where you take your beloved pets for care. This experience was a nightmare, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Today our sweet boy has passed, and I blame Dr. Murphy for not being able to properly do her job and taking away the possibility of us as dog parents to help him live or provide the proper treatment at the time before his health reached a point of no return.

    After his nose surgery

So I want to praise this clinic. I feel like they've been given false reviews by people who go their feelings hurt for being overly sensitive. So first let me say I have a French bulldog named Meechie. Meechie needed to have soft pallet surgery and his nares done. Not one time during my consultation with Dr,A was he rude, or condescending or acted like he didn't have time for me. He was very very patient , very supportive with answering my questions and showing me pictures of the surgery because he knew I was worried. He even let me sit in a room with my dog for an hour during his recovery period and was just all together a super nice , super kind Veterinary Doctor. The reviews given were extremely unjust of his personality and the quality of his work was amazing. My dog can breath better. He isn't passing out any more.

My cat Dwight has a history of urinary blockages and decided to pick the worst time to scare the crap out of me with what seemed like a sudden total blockage. He went from being able to pee to squatting 15 times in a row on every object in my room with nothing happening. The last time it happened it ended with me at the emergency vet for 5 hours for a very expensive and tearful, but thankfully successful, unblocking. Dr. Ahluwalia understood the importance of unblocking him ASAP (it can be fatal for male cats very quickly) and immediately unblocked him by manipulating his bladder right then and there. He then tested the urine removed for crystals but thankfully no stones. I was so relieved. He also prescribed me a urinary food to help avoid this in the future and Dwight has so far not had any further blockages (both the ER vet nor my previous vet did not go this far, and admittedly it did not occur to me as I haven't had boy cats with this issue before). Additionally, Dr. Murphy was VERY patient with my dog's first appointment at LifeCare- he (unfortunately) has a history of fear-nipping my previous vet and I was apprehensive it would be the same here, especially as he's not a small dog. She sat down on the floor and spoke to him kindly instead of immediately backing him under a chair like my (well-meaning) previous vet. They have soft muzzles available in different sizes so even a scaredy-cat husky like mine can get his paws checked out without me biting my nails... and him biting someone else's. Very thankful! (Enjoy an obligatory photo of Dwight!)

Despite that info, your team made a strong case about selling prescription treatment and you admitted to me verbally that your technicians didn't communicate that and weren't well trained. 2. When the technician lady I spoke with yesterday kept on cutting me off and saying that I was the one who rejected the heartworm test because your hospital "always" does things right, yes I got frustrated. I told her I was going to hang up and that I would find another hospital because I didn't want to continue being talked over and gaslighted. In my perspective, a proper response from your team would have been "I am surprised to hear that wasn't relayed to you. There must have been a mistake." And not "Our hospital always asks the owner so it must have been you who rejected it" esp when she couldn't find any records 3. Lastly it is my bad for assuming that the technician was the doc's wife. I am truly sorry for that. Being Korean myself and supporting a lot of Korean establishments in NOVA, I see a lot of husband-wife businesses. That lady's demeanor said she didn't care about losing my business at all so I assumed she was related to the owner. I am sorry as it was a cultural misguided assumption. Since you say that you are hoping to improve, my sincere feedback for your hospital is below: 1.) Please take some time to improve on empathy and customer service. Take a moment to listen to the customer. Please refrain from being defensive, cutting people off, arguing back, etc. I have never in my 20+ years in NOVA have come across an establishment where I felt the communication was this difficult. 2.) Kindly take the time to talk with patients & train your technicians on products they are selling, on customer service, on promoting clear/transparent processes. Yes you treat animals. But you are the main communicators with those pets' owners. Does a doctor at the hospital only checks up on the patients and prescribes treatment? No - they talk with family members, clearly explaining and assuring of what they are going to do and train their nurses to best assist with the treatment. That is part of the job and is a huge part of patient care. I have a right to my experiences and to share my perspective as do you. Please don't accuse my experience as being slanderous and unfactual. Obviously there was a lot of miscommunication but maybe that in itself can be a starting place for you to reflect on how to best mitigate those problems in the future. I wish you and your business best of luck. ---- It's not worth the stress, people. Please don't be swayed by the prices & look elsewhere. Three main reasons why I'm taking my dog elsewhere - Unclear Practice/Process, Poor Communication, Aggressive Attitude toward customers. A couple of weeks ago, I brought my dog in for an annual checkup. He was having diarrhea but I wasn't too worried as it happens occasionally, but since my dog's annual checkup was due in a month or so, I thought why not bring him in early just to check? I relayed this as I checked my dog in. Then a headache ensued with their technicians trying to sell my husband this comprehensive treatment plan to my dog. I was so confused - how could there be a treatment plan when the results of the bloodwork wasn't even out? When I went to pick up my dog, I told the doc - I get all the other shots you're giving my dog, but "what's the difference between getting my dog prescription food vs. feeding him a bland diet for his diarrhea?" And the doc said, "you don't have to cook." ...I was baffled. There was a miscommunication, a large part of it was due to undertrained technicians which the doc admitted to, and yet he had a standoff with me for 30 minutes. Whatever, I just wanted to take my dog home. THEN, a couple weeks later today, I was ordering heartworm medicine through Chewy and they declined it. I call the hospital and this Korean lady whom I assumed to be his wife based on how she was asserting herself, tells me that my dog didn't get his annual heartworm test. I asked her why then didn't they tell me when I went in for a checkup and then she aggressively argued that she's sure that someone must have told me. She looked in my records, but there was no record of me saying I declined the heartworm test, because I didn't. Yelp-fam, I told you the facts. You decide if the headache is worth it. Prices are great. But if you're anything like me and want the absolute best care for my dog and be treated in a professional/kind way, then pay a bit extra to get care elsewhere. Walk away. Also, DM me your favorite vets in NOVA. Looking for a new one for my fur-best friend.

They billed $326 for Senior Canine Wellness blood work, $45 for the rabies vaccine, $50 for the 3-year canine distemper vaccine, $52 for Bordetella/parainfluenza oral vaccine, a $10 medical waste fee, and $99 for a senior exam (7 years old), for a total of $577. After looking into it, I found that their vaccines are about $10 more expensive than other animal hospitals, and the senior canine wellness blood work is about $100-$150 higher than average. Before going to this animal hospital, I recommend checking other places. I've been going to this clinic for several years and have done all exams and vaccinations there. Last year, it cost around $300, but now the prices have become extremely expensive. After doing some research following this visit, I found other places that are about $200 cheaper. Please do your research before going. Sully Animal Hospital charges excessively high fees for vaccinations, treatments, and diagnostic tests. They also charge a high price for senior canine wellness bloodwork, and on top of that, they bill separately for the senior exam and even add a medical waste fee.

There was no doubt we wanted him to be looked after by Caring Hands. At 10 weeks old, weighing maybe 8 pounds, he ate a mushroom in our yard. It was coming out of both ends, enough said.
