Scooby is now the king of the couch
    Erin S.

In my original review, I didn't go into full detail about our dog's kennel cough, so I wanted to be sure I was being transparent: We got our pup from Fulton County Animal Services on March 14, 2020. My husband and I had just learned we were working from home indefinitely the day before, and so on Saturday, we decided to finally adopt a dog. I scrolled through their dogs' bios on their website and had a list of about 30 of them I wanted to see. This was a game changer. Earlier that day, we had gone to another animal shelter without doing any research, so when we got there and saw all the sad dogs in the sad cages, it was very overwhelming. We got to the Fulton County Animal Shelter at 5:15 pm, 45 minutes before they closed. (This was before they closed their doors to walk-ins due to the coronavirus pandemic.) We told them we were there to look at dogs and they let us walk right in. The smell is very overwhelming, so beware. It's very sad to see the dogs locked up in cages, with diarrhea and poop all over. Not a complaint because I know they have so many dogs in there (dogs who produce a lot of waste) and not enough staff, so there's not much they can do about it. I kept seeing dogs from the website; it was nice to see familiar faces. One particular dog we walked by picked up his head and knocked it on the bucket of water hanging from his cage. As the water spilled on his face, he licked it up. Immediately, I was in love. We asked to see him. He didn't have all his vaccines, so he wasn't allowed to go outside, but we were allowed to play with him in a little pen inside the shelter. We were given time and space to connect with him, which we did in no time. We told an employee that we wanted to adopt him. We walked into the adoption office at about 5:50. Tammi Armstrong walked us through the process. She was so informative, helpful, encouraging, and kind. She gave us his medical records and other important papers, as well as a a bag of food, leash, harness, stuffed animal, and some other toys for our dog. Our dog wasn't neutered yet because he was a stray (came in weighing 19 pounds and in 4 days had gained 11 pounds; a month later he now weighs 42 pounds!!) and had been too sick for surgery (kennel cough, which is understandable given the environment they're in). Luckily, Tammi let us take him home that day, knowing he would recover quicker outside of the shelter than in, and made us promise to bring him back for surgery once he was healthy, which of course we did. They gave us medicine to give him to help with the cough. He had a runny nose and kept coughing up mucus for weeks. Unfortunately, the medicine they gave us didn't help and a week and a half after we took him home, he had a fever (vet said hot behind his ears, which means fever) and wasn't eating. We took him to the vet, who said he had pneumonia. It was an expensive visit, as we also did chest x-rays, but they gave us medicine that worked and he was better within a couple weeks. He was finally well enough for surgery 4 weeks after we adopted him. We dropped him off at 9 am and picked him up at 4 pm. We were expecting him to be really lethargic, but he's not at all. He didn't even have to have a cone! He was running around our backyard after we got home. They gave us pain meds. We were so pleasantly surprised and happy that he seems to be in no pain at all. I'm not sure if this is the case with all dogs though. They waived their adoption fees during that week for St. Patrick's Day. We donated though because that's the best way to thank them. We absolutely love Wolverine, now Scooby, and we wouldn't have found our favorite member of our family without their help. Thank you to Fulton County Animal Services for helping us adopt our precious new pup! **Note: It seems there are a decent number of reviews that mention kennel cough. With so many dogs in such close conditions and with air circulation, I really don't see how Fulton County Animal Services can do all that much about it, unfortunately. When you adopt, just monitor your dog closely and if they're not getting better, take them to the vet.

First visit to FCAS and a little outdoor time with my adoptee
    Eve H.

I recently adopted from FCAS and I must say- aside from being overwhelmed by the amount of adult strays and the smell, I give the work this place does an award of honor. It has to be overwhelming and the staff was upbeat, friendly, efficient and courteous. The dog that I connected with was just bought in as a stray so his paperwork was Not processed. They could have easily made me check back when he got processed in but they accommodated a visit and a pre-adoption. The adoption fee is reduced for seniors 55 years and older from $85 to $40 and you get SOOOO Much for the fee- neutering, microchip, rabies shot & license, flea/tick/heartworm treatment, vaccine and antibiotics for kennel cough, a bag of food to take home and a free initial exam at a vet off of a list of vets. My furbaby seamlessly adjusted to his new home and is doing well! To all the employees, volunteers, donors and sponsors - I am grateful and they deserve to be thanked!

Over 2 years later, and we still love our Bella! Not only does she keep us laughing, but she's teaching us a lot about how to read a dogs' body language. We've had her on a plant based diet for about 1 1/2 years and it's been doing WONDERS for our workouts. She LOVES the outdoors, socializing with people, and eating

    Diamond

I adopted Diamond last week, as soon as, I got in the car she got so happy and fell asleep the whole way to her forever home. It took her two days to get used to my male dog but they are very playful now. I recommend getting a dog from here. They have so many loving dogs in cages and can't get them all out that much. Thank you for Diamond! She is a big baby. She loves to be held like a baby and sleeps under the cover right on top of you.

    All dressed up!

Recently adopted our Miniature Schnauzer from here with no problem. Found her online and called to confirm they still had her. The fees are affordable unlike some "shelters" to adopt and they even offer specials like senior discounts and a Black Friday special where they actually waive the adoption fees. They will get smaller dogs occasionally but they don't last long. It is a bit depressing to see so many animals that need homes, especially pit bulls. I guess that's the case at any animal shelter. Yet the staff appear to do a great job giving them much needed TLC. They gave her initial vaccines and after adoption they gave me a list of vets that would offer follow up care. They were very helpful when I called later to give me food and heartworm advice. Our baby is about 6 years old and was abandoned by her previous owner. She is the most chill dog and definitely a diamond in the rough. Didn't have to be trained at all! Our family adores her! When we adopt again we will definitely return back here!

I found an abandoned dog crying and barking in Piedmont Park's dog park a couple days ago. I took the pup home, and I asked folks on social media what to do. Long story short, the very next morning, after visiting a vet clinic and then the Humane Society, I finally arrived at Fulton County Animal Control. Sure, that dog was adorable and I wanted to adopt him, but another family will do a better job. Things to know: -If the pup is a stray, you must take the dog to Animal Control so the owner has the opportunity to reclaim him or her. (It doesn't make sense, I know.) -Both the outside and inside look pretty depressing, but don't fear. -Staff was very warm. When I explained the situation, I just had to fill out a small card to provide them with all the info I had. -They have hand disinfectant. -They host play dates for dogs. -I left having a pretty great experience. Even though I would rather adopt a pooch from a rescue, just because I've had such great experiences with them, if I were to get another dog, I would seriously consider visiting Fulton County Animal Control.

Recently we welcomed a rambunctious Labrador Retriever/mix into our family! I owe a lot of thanks to FCAS, but I really am thankful to whomever posted my baby boy on Reddit. Thanks to that individual we wouldn't have ever met Link (previously known as Nemo). Link was "Urgent". He was found at a Marta station with an injured leg. He was scheduled to be put down in few days, but we met him the same day we came across his profile. He is a PERFECT fit into our family. Our toddler and Link are partners in crime. What I like a lot about the shelter is the fact that they have employees/volunteers that reach out and try to connect not only physically in the community (Petco adoption days), but also connect via solical media. They have two Facebook pages dedicated to connecting humans and furry pals. One page is their general FB page and the other is dedicated to Urgent animals. (Like our pup). They will post photos/ videos of sed animals, contact info, etc. I had spent three different days inside of FCAS. The facility, in my opinion, needs a face lift. It's not a bad shelter. It's relatively clean, but the building is really old. They have a LOT of dogs. Not so many cats. The cats have their own room. Which is a decent size. And the dogs are in the back in a huge warehouse with separate cinderblock-like cages that are in rows. Link was in with a small batch of "sick" dogs since his leg was messed up.They didn't want him with the healthy dogs because they were worried they would hurt him. But, I didn't appreciate that much because he wasn't sick.... Visitors were not allowed in the small area. I don't know how he would have been adopted if someone didn't see him online. Also the vet services aren't the best. Apparently they don't take x-rays. They only do super basic things like, vaccinations, spay/neuter. Which is okay, but kindof sucks. The staff is a mix in my opinion. Some are nice, some not so much. But, I noticed the more we came in, the nicer they were to us. Which I get. They deal with a lot of crappy things all day. I thought it was awesome that the second time we came in, it was to bathe and play with Link the day before he was neutered. But, I also thought it was crappy that they don't really give the animals baths. And from what I heard from the staff, they don't let out the dogs much. I REALLLYYY didn't like that. I know sometimes, it can be busy and they only have a handful of staff at a time..But they have huge pens on the side of the building. Even if they let them out for a few mins, especially the ones that are locked up in tiny cages. Anyways, we are super happy to have our baby boy in our lives. I think if you're wanting to volunteer, donate, or adopt, this is definately a good shelter to do it.

Save a life and adopt a pet from Fulton County Animal Services. Located on Marietta Blvd in Atlanta, you can find cats and dogs of all sizes here. There are roughly 400 puppies, small dogs, and large dogs, kittens and cats at the shelter. Adoption fees are $85 for dogs and $65 for cats. This cost includes spay/neuter, heart wormer pills, vaccination, collars, microchips, rabies shots, etc. At Fulton County Animal Services the staff is very friendly and will help you locate the dog that best suits you. Some of the animals are strays and others are just lost. If no one claims them they can be adopted. Fulton County Animal Services gets in new animals everyday. The shelter is open daily and the hours vary. Whether you want to adopt, donate or just volunteer, Fulton County Animal Services is a non profit organization that would be very appreciative. They provide the state with a great service. For more information go to www.fultoncountyanimalservices.com. They get five stars for caring.

Atlanta Humane Society knew that the two dogs they adopted to me were both unfit for adoption. The first dog (Meagan) I took to my VCA Veterinarian and even he told me that Atlanta Humane Society should have never adopted her out. He told me that she has so much anxiety and is not too social with people. She is social with other dogs. So, I asked him if he would write a letter of recommendation stating that he finds her to have too much anxiety and isn't too social with people and that he doesn't recommend her being placed for adoption. He did write the letter and I gave Meagan back to Atlanta Humane Society along with that letter from my VCA Veterinarian. When she (Meagan) was in my care, she never ate and she never drank. Not even my own VCA veterinarian could get her to eat and drink. She would only pace back and forth when kept indoors. The other dog I adopted from them (Zairya) did not like being held. When I held her, she wanted me to immediately put her down. She would not come when I called her name, she would just only hide under chairs and under tables. Also, she would bark loudly like crazy whenever she was in a crate or left alone. She too would not eat or drink. This is why I returned her back to Atlanta Humane Society as well. Atlanta Humane Society never told me about either dog's severe anxiety issues and they knew that neither dog was fit for adoption. Yet, they still adopted them out. It is clear that Atlanta Humane Society doesn't care about remedying the anxiety issues of their dogs before adopting them out. It is completely shady and absurd to me that they (Atlanta Humane Society) would knowingly adopt out two dogs with severe anxiety issues and then expect the adopter who adopted them to keep them. Atlanta Humane Society is the reason why I have now lost all trust in all animal shelters and they're also the reason why they have now made it completely hard and difficult for me to ever adopt again. I WILL NEVER EVER adopt from Atlanta Humane Society (including all other animal shelters) ever again. I will never again deal with nor set foot in another animal shelter ever again after these two horrible adoption experiences. When I adopted both dogs, they were both adopted to me completely smelly and filthy. I had to take each dog to a local self serve dog wash immediately after leaving with each one due them smelling so horribly and being so filthy. Please keep in mind that if you adopt any cat, kitten, dog, or puppy from Atlanta Humane Society...they will be adopted out to you completely smelly and filthy. They don't bother taking the time to bathe any of their animals before adopting them out and sending them off to their new home. I don't recommend Atlanta Humane Society, if you must adopt a dog...I recommend going elsewhere. Atlanta Humane Society doesn't care who adopts their animals as long as they're able to pay their grossly outrageously high adoption fees. They rely on people to pay their high adoption fees to fill their pockets and wallets. Atlanta Humane Society has now made me hate all animal shelters.

Fostering an animal while it finds a home is one of the best things a person can do. Animals in tiny cages where they don't get room to run and play can get issues that can take years of training and care to treat. But, give a homeless animal a temporary home while you find a permanent one and it can learn from your other pets or just get used to what it is like to have a nice home.
