Beautiful facility somewhat off the beaten path. If you've had bad experiences with shelters before (barking dogs, the smell, chaos, etc.) I encourage you to visit the Atlanta Humane Society. The dogs are kept in nicer spaces that are behind glass. If you're interested in interacting with the pets, you let an employee/volunteer know and you're put into a room to spend time together. We were only casually looking and there with a friend who was considering adopting. In her interactions in the days leading up to our visit, the said the staff was very quick to respond and helpful. The one downside was that I felt the staff/volunteers were very pushy in trying to get the animals adopted... but at the end of the day, they're also just doing their jobs! read more

I adopted my cat, Blayze, back in 2019 and my puppy, Thraxx, back in May 2021. these are my BABIES. the adoption was so simple, very quick, and both of my babies came home healthy, spayed, and ready for their first free vet visit. Having a Terrible Yorkie in the past has prompted me to switch up on animal companions in the future so I am getting a cat instead. Alright Yelpers - here's the scoop on the humane society: Parking: great. They have their own lot on the side of the building. Front desk: no one was there when we arrived so I was a little confused as to how the center worked but a worker/volunteer did appear out of nowhere to help us and direct us to the right area. Animals: compared to the selection in Roswell, GA they don't have a huge kitten selection. None the less, the cats were adorable! If the one I wanted wasn't recently fixed I woulda taken him home! Staff: they all seemed really nice except there were two staff blatantly discussing their shift or workload and it was unprofessional to say the least - I could have been anyone and they weren't discreet about it which is the reason for the 3 stars. I'm very disappointed with this place. We got our dog from animal control and they require that their Pitbulls get spayed/microchipped with this humane society(which is fine). However, what is not ok is the fact that: 1- they placed my puppy's microchip incorrectly 2- the microchip area became infected :( I had a vet look at it and they've never seen a microchip swollen like that. I'm so upset this is happening to my puppy and therefore I will never return for any services for any of my pets. read more

The first thing that I wanted to do when I moved back to Atlanta was find a good veterinarian for my puppy (Lucky). I'm so glad that I was recommended to the Atlanta Humane Society's Vet Center. They have been absolutely wonderful with Lucky. The receptionist is awesome, very friendly, and really helpful answering ALL of my questions. It's refreshing to be welcomed by a friendly face every time we go to the Vet Center. They are not bombarded with clients whenever I go (usually on Saturday mornings). And Lucky has had a great experience every time that we have been. * I recently got my dog neutered by Dr. Conner. She is Great!! Very personable, knowledgeable (of course, and exactly what you want) & friendly. I felt reassured leaving Lucky in her hands. * On our first visit, Lucky got blood work done for heart worm prevention pills and the overall check over. Dr. Conner and her staff were very gentle and really kept him calm during the process. * Two weeks later Lucky went in to get neutered. I was really nervous about this surgery...and it didn't help that I decided to read Yelp reviews while waiting to pick him up. But he did great!! He looked normal and had a cute (which i'm sure is annoying to him) cone around his head. I was given pain meds for his first few days after the surgery. So far, so good. He didn't seem to be in too much pain, he was more so concerned about the weird contraption around his neck. By day 2 he was back to his normal self and ready to run, jump, etc. * I've had a great experience so far with the Atlanta Humane Society's Vet Center. More importantly, my dog is healthy, neutered, and doing great. So thankful for a great Vet!! read more

This review is for the vet center. After going there for over 10 years for my pets, all of a sudden they want to make me jump through extra hoops for my 15 year old dog to get his urinary incontinence medicine (the meds that keep him from peeing on himself) that they've been prescribing him for at least 4 years. To compound issues, you can't call the vet center directly, just a call center which has zero information, and they're gone at noon for lunch - so I'll cancel my 1pm meeting at work so I can accommodate THEIR schedule. I'll have to go in and fight for the meds in person because I won't euthanize my dog just because the Humane Society doesn't want keep giving him the meds that keep him dry. I'll never donate again, absolutely disgusted. read more

I didn't like how I felt pressured to get a dog by one of the employees. I feel like it affected my process of choosing a pet.

I adopted my dog last month and I couldn't be happier with him. I really liked the AHS for the most part, they were very active in their website and they did so much to help with the adoption process. The reason they don't get five stars is because I had walked in with a list of three dogs I wanted to see, and when the front desk people asked which ones, I read off the list and when I got to the last one, they had this immediate reaction like "oh ooo wow, she's a lot ummmm" and I said "well maybe not her then," and they tried to convince me to see her anyways, however I was put off by that immediate negative response that I didn't end up seeing that dog. Obviously, everything worked out with my dog, however, if your mission is get animals adopted but having that immediate visceral reaction to someone expressing interest, it is very off putting. Obviously you should mention any behavioral problems but maybe in a privacy of a room with the dog as opposed to in front of a crowded lobby. Just something to think about I guess cause I've not forgotten about that reaction. read more

Big came to me from a breeder. I researched small dogs and settled on a Maltipoo and he was the light of my life. (He was also expensive, but I digress!) Now that he's gone, I have to figure out what and when to move forward, dog-wise. That made me think of other dogs of mine, adopted from the Humane Society. The black lab mix brother and sister, Wesley (yes, after "The Princess Bride") and Wahoo (because I was going to UVA) that my family got in high school and loved for 14 years. "My" first dog on my own, Magis, a beautiful and sweet Australian Shepherd I lost in my divorce (believe what people say about canine custody battles- it can get ugly). Leo, the crazy, furry Lab I insisted on adopting the weekend Magis ran away because I was so worried she wouldn't be found (she was, and then there were three, thanks to our other pup, the Mastiff). Whew, that was a lot of dog! But every dog I've gotten from the Humane Society has been wonderful and a great companion, and I've felt great about taking care of and giving a nice home and life to a dog who might otherwise . . . not get that. Thanks to another Yelper, I understand the Humane Society does grief counseling the second Saturday of every month for $5, for those of us who've lost our precious pets. I am planning to check it out, and to take my time considering whether going back to the AHS route, or adopting another little dog from a breeder (living in an apt/condo for the past six years was a big part of why I chose Big - I didn't want a dog who needed to run or go out all the time). You don't ever know exactly what you're getting at the Humane Society because most are probably mixed breeds, so that's a downside. I would say without reservation that it's so worth it to adopt from the Humane Society and their resources are indeed extensive (spaying, neutering, obedience classes, getting your initial supplies...). Maybe a visit to play with puppies is exactly what the doctor ordered, very soon! [A quick PS - my sweet ex Z is going to go with me to play with puppies this weekend! I can't wait. This review is specifically for the training course taught by Mailey (we adopted our dog, but from a different rescue). We can't say enough wonderful things about the beginner obedience class series - highly recommend for any dog owners. Mailey is a dog whisperer, and is very patient and clear about explaining her philosophy about training, so that you walk away learning how to better communicate with your dog. We felt it really enhanced our relationship and understanding of her behaviors, beyond just having her learn to sit, stay, come, etc. Our dog is generally good, but we still found it worthwhile to have a shared method for giving commands. The course is also far cheaper than any alternative I found in the area - an amazing value on top of the quality. We took the class in a virtual format during COVID-19 - while we missed the social aspect, we still learned a lot and Mailey's passion and skill still showed through. She went above and beyond to make the experience meaningful - offering to review videos throughout the week and weekend, answering any questions, and also allowing anyone to return and re-take the class in person once they're offered again. read more

These guys are the best I swear they're angels I rescue feral cats usually the bad ones, the mangy ones, the ones nobody wants... the undercats i help them heal and get better and find them homes because of Covid I was on a limited budget and I rescued a cat who had bad mange. These guys helped me out and worked within my budget. They were so nice and helpful. they went out of their way to explain everything to me and help the best that they could. I had been to three other vets who presented bills of over $500 which I could not afford I told AHS my budget and they did what they could to help. The mange is healed !! Be very careful adopting from here. We went in and specifically asked for an adult dog since we have a senior dog at home. We adopted a dog they told us was 3 years, 9 months old. She turned out to be 9 months old - a puppy. She also had giardia which took weeks to eradicate. I felt the whole adoption process was very rushed, they didn't ask us a single question. I also don't think a vet ever looked at her, or they would have gotten her age right. We kept her because I believe when you adopt, it's a commitment, but it has been an uphill battle with my senior and the new dog's puppy behavior (which again, we SPECIFICALLY told them we didn't want). I'm sure the puppy will grow into a good dog, and we love her, but I don't feel you can trust anything the AHS tells you. I would go elsewhere to adopt next time. read more

This is a great organization over all but I did want to share something I experienced. I'm assuming it's a weekend staff thing, but I was very frustrated with the lack of help, care and concern. I had a lot of drastic life changes happen in a very short period of time that led to me having to downsize very quickly. Amongst all of it, I had to surrender my 8 year old dog. I waited as long as possibly but eventually had to find some place for him to stay. Sunday, I came to the Human Society and asked one of their staff members, this petite awkward lady, if there was any way to look my dog up in the system. The woman seemed reluctant, asked for the name of his original owner then told me the dog was only neutered there. I asked if there was any other way to verify and she said no, I would have to make an appointment and wait three weeks. When I told her I tried to call and left a message. She told me something along the lines of they get to messages when they get to them. I was already sad I had to give up my dog and she wasn't helpful AT ALL. I called back Monday AND Tuesday and finally talked to someone who shared that they could actually scan the dog to verify. Surprise, surprise! Another way. So I brought him back and in less than 5 minutes they pulled him up and took him in. There was just enough time for the employee I spoke to a Sunday to make eye contact and look away. Ultimately it worked out but the weekend staff didn't seem to want to do their jobs. read more

I went in looking for a kitten which I had seen on their website - which does seem to be updated regularly with available animals for adoption- but ended up falling in love with a 5 year old adult female cat instead and 5 months later I feel so fortunate to have her! Lucy is an absoute fantastic companion- smart, sweet and friendly to all who meet her. The facility is very clean, staffed by caring employees (many volunteers) and there are even socialization rooms where you can take your prospective kitty to see how he/ she reacts to you one on one. In fact, this is what changed my mind about the original kitten who did not act friendly at all, in fact she was a bit mean to me! :( I was preparing to leave when the volunteer recommended that I look at several other cats, especially adults who would be well suited to a one human/ one cat home as that is what I sought. Be prepared to spend a couple of hours at the AHS from start to finish including time to fill out a "lifestyle" questionaire and speak briefly with a staffer who will make sure that any pet will be going to a safe and stable home. The fees are very reasonable- less than $100 to adopt a spayed/ microchipped cat with a free initial visit to a local vet of your choice in order to have a professional evauate your new pet's health right away. Overall, a very positive experience, my only wish would be for the staffers to have or at least be able to release more information about the animals such as why they are there as in my case, I suspect that Lucy was released to the AHS from her former family because of poor litterbox habits and a sensitive stomach which caused some stress when I first adopted her and she was throwing up every food I tried- both of which have been eliminated with a proper diet and meticulous maintenance of an ultra-clean litterbox so that she wants to use it! read more

We have had dogs our entire life along with all our children who are now adults. Without doubt the Mansell Rd. Center is one of the cleanest most friendly centers we have seen in Georgia and Florida . It rates at the top of our list with the Huizenga Center in Ft Ldl Florida. They took time and explained where each dog that we were looking for came from and the entire background as they knew it. We ended up adopting a 8 week old German Shepard.. he is everything we were looking for and has a fantastic personality and a great match for our family I would encourage them to add a little play area so that adoptive parents can see how the animal plays and interacts with them vs sitting in a chair holding the dog. It is a big help. Update: We needed some clarification of the dogs well check up and shots he already received as we had 2 different papers they gave us in our package. We have called 3 times, 2 different numbers, on 3 different days. The phone numbers were listed on our paperwork. No one has returned our calls. Sad that no one can check the messages throughout a day from an adoptive parents questions and concerns. .. Such a simple fix, its called follow up and customer service. I had been thinking about adopting a dog for awhile now. On a whim, I asked my son if he wanted to look at some dogs and shortly after, we adopted one. If you love dogs (or cats), it's kinda hard to leave without taking one home. The facility is very clean for a shelter. There is sanitizer everywhere and you're not allowed to touch a puppy without using sanitizer first. The kennels in which the dogs are kept in are pretty clean to. Sure, you might find a dog that has eliminated in his kennel (it happens) but you can tell that the facility does take the time to maintain their living space. I wanted an older dog since puppies require more attention than I can give. I really lucked out. I found an older dog with the right temperament I was looking for. Her previous owners trained her well because she responds positively to basic commands and comes to me when I call her name. You never know what you will get with a shelter dog but the AHS does try their best to find out background info on the animals and they do their own assessments on intake. You do have to pay an adoption fee to cover microchipping, shots, etc... but here's a way to save a little money on fees : Underdogs are dogs that have been there a few months so to help get them adopted, the adoption fee is significantly less. Same goes for cats. The staff are very friendly and answered a million of my questions. We were greeted immediately after stepping foot inside. If you are prepared to adopt, make sure you bring ID. read more

I brought my two cats here to be neutered about two weeks ago. The online reservation process was very easy and flowed seamlessly with the in house orientation. I was required to drop Damien and Ziggy (the cats) off at 7:30AM and pick them up promptly at 3:30pm. Although I was slightly late picking them up, the staff was very nice, informed us of the process, and how to care for our pets afterward. It's been about 2 weeks now and both of my cats are doing well. If you're looking for a low cost way to spay or neuter your pet in the Atlanta area I would recommend here first. The Atlanta Humane Society is awesome! This past weekend we took our 2 pups here to be spayed and neutered as they received a grant to fix your animal for only $20. This also included their rabies vaccination and a microchip. We arrived at 6:45am Saturday morning to drop off Boots and Buster with them for their surgery. There were a lot of other folks there as well taking advantage of the deal. The employees did a great job at registering all the animals and taking us to the back with the dogs to be examined to make sure they were good to go for surgery. After that we were on our way around 7:15, leaving the dogs in the capable hands of AHS. At 4:00pm we went back to pick up the doggies. All went great with the surgery and as we along with the other owners waited in the lobby the employees brought out the pets one by one. But before bringing out the pets, the volunteers here made sure they gave everyone post-op instructions on how to care for the pets once they got home. read more

The Atlanta Humane Society Clinic is the only place in the entire metro area where proceeds are donated back to the shelter for animals. I recently adopted Cochise, a small rottweiler mix puppy from the Atlanta Humane Society and I had to pick him up from the clinic. At the Clinic, Cochise was neutered and they also embedded an identification chip between his shoulder blades. When I picked up Cochise for the first time, the veterinarian was very helpful. She told me everything I needed to know explaining my dog's condition in full detail as well as upcoming vaccination requirements, etc. If you adopt a pet from the Atlanta Humane Society you get one free pet visit, within seven days of adoption, to one of the society's acceptable clinics. A few years ago I brought my dog to get neutered. The check-in process was smooth and my little Beagle had some cute swag in his walk post-surgery :) I was also recently at the Atlanta Humane Society to look at puppies and had a great experience. The people here are kind and very helpful. I noticed the facility was clean and doesn't smell as bad as one would expect. The place is very inviting which I think in part has to do with all the natural lighting. And most importantly the puppies look happy! Overall, I really appreciate places like these where animals are taken care of and find happy homes. If you like dogs and cats, the Atlanta Humane Society is a fun place to go to check out all the animals. They have three main rooms: one for small dogs and puppies, one for big dogs, and one for cats. The dogs and cats love to be played with. In order to take an animal out of its cage, all you have to do is fill out five lines of info. on a form. They have all sorts of breeds. The building and living conditions of the animals are relatively clean and the volunteers are more than happy to assist you. Several of the puppies were available for adoption for about $165 when I visited and we were told that it was mainly to cover the cost of spaying/neutering the animals, implanting a chip, etc. The AHS is definitely worth checking out. read more

CAUTION! PRECIOUS BABIES AHEAD! My goodness gracious, I have stars in my eyes. I'm a new pet owner as of June 29th, 2012! I have had kitty fever for at LEAST a year now. When we got to the humane society, we were introduced to a brother and sister from the same litter. His pants may as well have been covered in catnip, cause she was swooning. Too bad he was only there with us for support, and definitely not looking to become a kitty-dad that day. (But soon...) I could tell he still had eyes for Talia, so I figured it would be a perfect idea to adopt them both. Happy (early) birthday, G! It was without a doubt that we would be taking them home with us. (Talia approves of this message as she purrs in my lap). Now for some important review stuff: The volunteers at the humane society are marvelous, and so grateful for the adoptions. All of the cats are spayed/neutered, and have received their shots. If you adopt, you get 10% off your purchases in the boutique that day. But that's not all. Atlanta Humane is such a wonderful organization, they give you the first month of Frontline FREE, as well as your first visit to the vet (VCA). ...18 signatures later, and you're done! They want to make sure you are as happy to bring home a new pet, as the critters will be in the lap of luxury. (Pun intended, currently). After a poor experience with FurKids (and yes, I have left them a review as well) my girlfriend and I turned to Atlanta Humane Society as an option to adopt a new cat for our home. We did go to the one closest to us first on Mansell Road, but we didn't get much assistance--likely due to the hour and being a Saturday--nor did any of the cats on sight 'click' for us. So a few days later we headed over to this location since we were on that side of town, and WOW what a different experience. The volunteer in the cat room was super-knowledgeable about each cat on sight and their personalities and temperaments, and was happy to let us open the cages and interact with the kitties. That's how we clicked pretty quickly with Lucille--or as we've taken to calling her, Luci--and she seems to be just as taken with us. Right now there's a summer offer going where all adult animals have their adoption fee waived, so if you are looking for a kitty to share your life and heart with, I strongly suggest this location over FurKids. We are to arrive and check-in at 7am, it's been 20 minutes past 7 now and they still haven't opened up to let anybody in. There's a long line of people waiting. People have jobs to go to. Two weekends almost down of our planned four in a row to see the quality of pups available at the Atlanta Humane Society and everything changed. We found our baby! A little bit ahead of schedule we couldn't turn down this beautiful animal and we made the appropriate life changes to support our new family member. The staff here were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. With there being so many mixed breeds and mutts it helped to have people available to answer questions about temperament, potential size, health concerns and other various things that may come up when you're about to make a decision that may last for over the next decade. The adoption process was wonderful and made me feel extremely comfortable about where I was getting my puppy from. I found out there are tons of people that are declined during the process everyday. This isn't a place where anyone can just walk in and grab a dog on the go. The concern for the animals finding their "forever home" is obvious. I left feeling like I made the right decision both with the puppy I adopted and the place where I got her from. $150 got me a 4 month old potcake who's already been spayed and micro chipped with a clean bill of health. I have all her records, 30 days insurance and a free check up. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Although.... some help potty training would have been nice... WARNING: If you are not ready to have an animal in your life... do NOT enter! There's a pretty good chance you'll want to leave with a new fwriend. Those puppies are dangerous!!! read more

We recently rescued a lil pup who was at the time barely 8weeks which we took straight to the clinic at AHS for her 1st round of vaccines. The Staff is a pleasure to work with and very helpful to this 1st time mom. They also also have an adoption center, a drop off, and a shop where we purchased the Frontier plus and received one for free (with the purchase of three). The place is clean, oder free, and care about the work they do. Amazing and wonderful animal shelter that does so much for the animal community in Atlanta. I've been volunteering at AHS since 2008 as a dog walker, and also found my dog, Huck, here. If you're interested in walking dogs, working with cats or helping with many other tasks, I highly recommend you look into volunteering at this shelter. Volunteer trainings are listed on AHS's website, and there are also opportunities to help with fostering animals as well. As far as adopting a furry friend goes, you can't beat the reasonable price of adoption (which includes spaying/neutering, the first round of shots, microchipping, etc.) and knowing that you're helping an animal without a home find their forever home. They have many varieties of cats and dogs available, and if you're serious about finding a pet, I recommend you check their website as well, as it's often updated with the currently adoptable pets. We found my schnauzer mix at AHS, and the love and joy he brings to our life is immeasurable. AHS also does low-cost spaying and neutering if you already have a pet, and their vet clinic is very reasonable compared to many other vets. The people who work at the shelter truly care about the dogs and cats they care for, and do amazing work in the community. If you're looking to adopt a pet, need vet care for your dog or cat or want to give back, I highly recommend visiting AHS! read more

Our dog was neutered here. His recovery is going very well, however we also opted in for a nail trim. I'm not sure who did the trim, but one of his nails was cut to the quick and his paw was also cut into. This also was not brought to our attention upon pickup and I did not realize until we had him home. I would highly recommend their low cost spay neuter service but it's not worth the $5 to have their nails trimmed, and risk a paw injury, especially in the summer months with the pavement being hot as it is. read more

I looked at the yelp reviews before coming in. Which I shouldn't have done because a lot of them were negative, and I came in already thinking I was going to be mistreated, but that wasn't the case! all of these 3 stars 2 stars must have been the other location because Howell was extremely clean actually the cleanest shelter I've ever seen. the staff was amazing they were busy because there were a lot of people trying to adopt, but I wouldn't say it was crowded and it was on a Saturday. the person who helped me get my dog she had pink hair and she was so sweet. As well as my doggy counselor she answered ALL of my questions and she told me ALL that I needed to know about my dog. so if any of you are reading comments on yelp before you go in. DONT DO IT. You just have to see for yourself. My experience for adopting my first dog was outstanding and I would most definitely come back! read more

I recently had my dog neutered here and had a great experience. I must admit I was skeptical at first and extremely nervous but to my dismay they did a great job! I highly recommend this particular location for this process. I was originally quoted $450 for this procedure with my local vet and with the Atl Humane Society got the exact same thing for $100. Sign up via the website was easy and they kept me updated via email on the next steps and what to do when I arrive and steps for after the procedure. My dog is healing nicely and doing great! This rating is for the Volunteer Services. Almost every week since November, I have visited the Humane Society to play with the animals as much as I can. The workers there even joked about giving us VIP cards because we visited so often and knew so much about the organization. Being pre-vet and more recently turned animal conservationist, I thought I might as well turn these visits into volunteer hours. Here is how it went. I have been trying to schedule for a volunteer orientation session for the past three months. All the emails I have gotten back said the same thing, in poorly written, obnoxious caps locks- we are full, the coordinator is out, check back with us because we don't have dates, etc, until one day, I miraculously procured a spot after checking their website everyday in December for new dates. A completely filled out form and mandatory $25 in hand, a friend and I arrived early to the session, only to be literally brushed aside by a douchebag, "Volunteer training is closed" and slammed the door in our face. A few other people like us who arrived on time got the same treatment. Confused, we all went back in and tried to get in the auditorium, only to find it locked. All the other volunteers recognized me and tried to get us into the session but they couldn't do anything because the door was locked. To add insult to injury, another douchebag worker laughed and told us "there is nothing that can be done", and "kids, go home and sleep or something, that's what you guys do anyway". I can't believe it- the spots that I worked so hard to get reserved for us were just given away to whoever showed up? No one even offered to take down our names for the next session either. I can't help but feel insulted. It's too bad that the thousands of dollars I had planned to donate to this particular AHS is going to go to another shelter. read more

Howell Mill Campus 981 Howell Mill Road NW Atlanta, GA 30318 404.875.5331 (main) I went to this shelter this morning today 5/3 got there at 11 AM waited out there until one pm when they open the doors to look at the for the dog that I had been emailing about and getting responses on saying that the dog was still available I get there go to the back and find out the dog was still there laying down after the guy told me that the dog wasn't there that it had been adopted but it had not been adopted they just put papers in there saying that it was adopted to keep me from getting the dog and the worker / or volunteer guy that was working with the dog made sure that the guy that he was with got the dog I think it is ridiculous the way they charge all this money for the dogs and you go there with the money in order to get a pet to help they betray you the public like they do it's awful I didn't find it comfortable pleasant the place was clean true enough and it did not smell but why did they do things and handle is ridiculous they need to get people in there that is honest read more
