Scott was so nice to speak with over the phone and equally easy going on the day of our excursion. He picked us up at our hotel and drove us up the mountain to the trailhead. He brought liking poles, a day pack, water, and snacks. Scott made frequent stops on the trail to accommodate our adjustment to the altitude (and our fitness level). He never once made us feel bad for stopping. As a geology professor at the local community college, Scott is uniquely knowledgeable about the area. We learned so much about the mountain and the plants and animals, without ever feeling like we were in a lecture. Scott is professional, knowledgeable, and thorough - while still being easy going with a kind demeanor. HIGHLY recommend!

Had a truly enchanting time here while driving through Cerillos on a sightseeing adventure with an…read moreout-of-town friend and car full of children. My city-mouse friend mentioned that she had always dreamed of petting a horse, so when we drove past an eclectic looking stable with gorgeous horses (seriously looks like something out of a movie), I figured it was worth a shot to see if we could meet the animals. I told my friend, "What's the worst they could say? No?" I parked my car and walked up to what looked like the main building, and I was greeted by a sleepy grey cat and outrageously cute little dog. A man that I presume is the owner followed behind the dog and asked me if I needed help. After pitching my request to him, offering money to let my friend just spend some time visiting the horses, he kindly told me that we were welcome to respectfully walk around for free. He told us we could meet any horse that came up to us, but reminded us to not feed the horses. By the looks of the horses, the man I spoke to clearly cares for these animals deeply, and I was really taken by the cleanliness and health of the horses. In the end, my friend was able to meet a horse for the first time, and my kids loved seeing the beautiful animals. They especially loved the sweet grey cat and inquisitive one-eyed horse. We will definitely be back to schedule a ride here, as I was so impressed by the animals and thankful for the kindness we were shown. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Broken Saddle!

I don't know where it starts and I don't know where it ends, and I really don't want to know either. I just get on from my hood in the Beverly Hills Barrio and I walk or ride in whichever direction I'm drawn towards that day and time. I have ridden all the way to Target one day, and the other past Rabbit road and beyond onto a dirt path. Other times I have ridden past the railyard and up Canyon road to the Audubon center. I can't say enough good things about urban paths that are ped and cycle friendly and I'm so glad that so many towns and cities have them. Keep it up America! Joy

In some ways, it reminds me of the many parks/trails in Seattle that I desperately miss (just bluer skies here). It's a great place to go for a run, bike or bring the kiddos. There is ample places to stop for a brief sit, picnic or good book read. And located next to the Farmer's market, the Rail Trail will make a great addition to your weekend mornings.

There's also a skate park, a couple volleyball courts and a baseball field. You have to bring your own net for the volleyball court. The baseball field has real bathrooms, but looks like they're locked when there isn't a baseball game happening. There was also a fence around most of the park. There's lots of covered picnic tables, shaded benches, and trees that create lots of shade. There's are shade structures on the playgrounds, but they don't really cover any of the equipment sadly. There's also a working water fountain. Some of the covered picnic tables also had some charcoal grills available to use. When we visited, there were also two porter potties, but I didn't go in them so I can't tell you how clean they were ... but they're porter potties, so ya know. lol. Also worth mentioning that I only saw two homeless people at this park. They kept to themselves and it didn't seem like they were doing drugs.

Don't overlook this gem…read more An easy drive from either Santa Fe or Albuquerque - and a really sensible stop for a couple hours of activity in between. Several trails that offer gorgeous views and interesting historical pauses (lots of 19th C mining stuff - and this is where the Aztec turquoise came from!) for moderately fit hikers (bear in mind that elevation gains are part of this, so if you're coming from sea level realize that the walks might require some pauses to catch breath). It would be a great place to bring active kids to let them run off some steam - you can't get a lot more Wild West than this park. The drive in is over well-maintained gravel roads (drive slow - folks in town have wandering dogs - the amusing sign says, "Old dog; Young dog; Several stupid dogs; Please drive slowly.") with a $5 put-your-money-in-the-envelope/put-the-envelope-in-the-post/put-the-permit-on-your-windshield payment required. Lots of sensible parking. Trail maps available - you'll want to take one or download the trails from AllTrails or something, because you are going to lose signal up there (although it's just about impossible to get lost). You will see the Sangre de Cristos, Jemez, Sandia and Ortíz mountain ranges as well as Mt. Taylor (Tsodzill) on your walk, which you can easily tailor to make as long or short as you want. In my experience, state parks are often overlooked by people who seek out the big national ones. It would be a mistake to pass by Cerrillos Hills State Park - it hits way above its weight class.
