My boyfriend and I don't often get a real tree because we usually travel for the holiday. This year we decided to get one anyway, mostly at my insistence. I was a little worried about a pre-cut tree because Thanksgiving was so early this year that I figured they'd be getting pretty dry. So yesterday, December 1st, we decided to find a place where you can cut your own. We'd done so in the past, but it has been several years. My boyfriend found Werkmeister through an older Courier Journal article. The article featured multiple places but Werkmeister seemed to be the closest on this side of the river. We prepped the car and put on terrible clothes and shoes since it was a very wet day. I then forced Matt to listen to Christmas music for the 30 minute drive to Shepherdsville. Once there, we learned that they had closed the fields for the year and only had pre-cut Fraser Firs brought in from North Carolina two weeks prior. I was definitely disappointed because we had driven all that way to avoid it. They explained that they only had the fields open Thanksgiving weekend and that a blight has hurt a lot of local tree farmers. It sounds like the fields had to be closed to keep the farm sustainable. The Fraser Firs, which do not grow in Kentucky, were beautiful and still in really fresh shape, despite having been cut and shipped two weeks prior. They had a variety of heights, but every tree was a flat rate of $60. All of them had been trimmed to have a great shape. We decided to get one anyway. Everyone there was really nice and helpful. They trimmed the bottom branches for us, gave it a fresh cut, shook it free of some of the water and loose needles, baled it, and helped us get it in the car. The service was really good. To be honest, it's unlikely we'll be back because we usually travel Thanksgiving weekend, and it's not really worth the drive for a pre-cut tree. But if you are around for Thanksgiving or live in the Shepherdsville area Werkmeister is good choice.

After always hearing great things about Menards from my boss in Chicago, I was excited when Menards…read morecame to Louisville. Almost everything we needed for our operations, this boss would say, "Go to Menards and pick it up." Up until this point I have been very please with the local store in Louisville as it is always neat, clean, and organized making it easy to find what one needs. Typically they have about all you need for a project. Recently while working on a project I needed an additional gallon of primer which I had been getting tinted. I asked my wife to go by Menards and pick it up. When she arrived back, the primer which she had placed in the passenger side floorboard had spilled out the top from the top not being put back on well from when associate tinted. We were able to clean most all the paint up as we have weather tech type mats. However, some of the paint got over on carpet on side of floor board and on the plastic molding on side of door. We were not able to get all this off. I attempted to contact local management night of issue, but their phones were turned off at 9:40 PM, even though they close at 10:00 PM. I spoke with Tyler the next day and explained situation. He seemed very helpful. The next thing I learned was claim had been turned over to a 3rd party Gallagher Bassett who handles claims for companies including Workman's Comp claim for companies. Victor Gallagher Bassett's manager who Menards seems to totally rely on for these processes has been evasive, unprofessional and of no help at all. A very sarcastic and nasty individual. This could have been handled as a customer service issue as it would not be a large claim. It would probably be less than the cost of most of my visits to Menards. However, Menards has chose to push their loyal customer off to a 3rd party and disregard their legitimate claim/issue. After calling store to update today, Victor once again called me to say their position stands because they can't verify what happened in my wife's car. I can tell you she didn't open can and pour it out in the floor of her car. It didn't fall out of seat. It was placed in floorboard for the ride home. This would not have spilled out edge of paint can, had associate not left lid unsealed. Menards is apparentlty so big, the individual lost in this process doesn't matter. I hope your interaction and doing business goes well with Menards. When it does, they are a great place to do business. However, if you have an issue like this, be ready to be pushed aside to a strong are legal claims handling company like Gallagher Bassett.

But I have purchased several of the gift items they have in the store -- another reason to check it out! Honest Home carries this fun line of cards with cut-out birds to be used in mobiles. It also has kits to build your own toys, and for Christmas, I particularly admired the ornaments and wood veneer Christmas tree garland. The store gets the veneer scraps from manufacturers, and it would have otherwise been thrown out. Honest Home brings its green mission to Christmas trees as well. And for home products, I've noticed that they carry recycled rugs, compost bins, flooring and countertops, lighting, cleaning products and paint. I am hoping to buy a home soon, so I'm looking forward to getting some green supplies to make over my new home. I'm holding out on the fifth star until then. Then at night fall they light up a walking path in the park with all kinds of cool holiday lights. After the initial event they still light the lights on the path every night all the way to the end of the year. This event and viewing the lights the rest of the season is completely free and doing either or both is always a lot of fun. When me and my family use to live in the highview area we would go to the original kickoff holiday fest. But even in years we can't make that fun event we still visit the highview holiday fest and walk the path with all the lights. We enjoy it so much that sometimes we will hit it up 2-3 times a year. Very fun and cool holiday tradition. In that same 2-3 mile vicinity there are 3 other super cool holiday lights to view.
