Let me preface this review by saying that neither Rose nor I are vegetarians or vegans, nor do we believe those are particularly healthy diets. However, we've both had vegetarian dishes that were quite good, so when we realized there was no meat on the menu, we had no problem with that. We stumbled on this cafe quite by accident on our way home to Roseburg from Umpqua. I had tried some of their bread, purchased at a farmers' market, and loved it. But I didn't know where their business was based. The place was busy...the numbers of cars in the parking lot is what initially clued us in that something was there. There were no signs at all on the highway to let you know there was a restaurant there. The decor was interesting and the staff was polite, but reserved. Rose chose the mushroom burger and I had the Reuben. I asked the gentleman at the counter to explain the vegetarian corned beef (that's just what the menu said)! Of course it was formed soy protein with no real beef, with the pickling spices usually associated with *real* corned beef. The sandwich also had sauerkraut (which was really good) and Swiss cheese which appeared to be real cheese (so I guess it wasn't strictly vegan). It was all on grilled rye. I believe the bread was very good, but it was grilled with lots of oil, so it was hard to tell. Rose said her mushroom burger was good, and a lot like a recipe she had made for us a few months ago. However, the roasted potatoes that came with it were a bit to heavily seasoned for her. If we're ever in that vicinity at lunch time again we might stop in, but I doubt we'll ever make a special trip there. But if you are a serious vegetarian you might want to check it out. Must eat / must stop if you are in the area around brunch/lunch time. Everything is vegetarian and sooooooo good! As a meat lover, I'm embarrassed at admit I didn't even notice it was a veggie burger that I was eating the first time I went. I try to go once a month (if not more!) Always a wait, but it's worth it. Super cute little patios to sit at outside on a nice day. I have not had one thing on the menu that wasn't delicious -- grilled cheese, all the homemade soups, quesadillas, veggies burgers (especially the BBQ one!), powerhouse sandwich, club... did I mention the homemade breads and danishes and sticky buns and cookies.... ok I might have a problem. Some of the best bread items I've ever had. The cashire couldn't put our loaf through the bread slicer because it was so warm it would upset the slicer machine. That's how fresh it was. The olive bread had tons of olives in it. The sourdough went great with butter and jelly. The pastries were out of this world, especially the sticky bun and raspberry danish. On the way from Portland to San Jose we stopped here for lunch. Excellent all vegetarian food, one of the best Sandwich I have tasted, I was a little hesitant to drive 4-5 miles off the freeway but it was all worth it. This place is amazing, fresh pastries and bread daily (some of the best sourdough I've tried!). Their sandwiches, salads, wraps, and soups are all wonderful. The food is all vegetarian and/or vegan and even though I don't subscribe to either of those practices, I haven't had a meal I didn't thoroughly enjoy! This is the best restaurant in the area hands down. Everything is always fresh, and the staff are the nicest around. The building is always clean and it never takes that long even when they're packed (which is often.) Be aware the portion sizes are pretty robust. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. No meat here but try the veggie guacamole burger. It does have vegan mayo so if you don't like that stuff (like me) get the mustard on it. Their mustard is my favorite from anywhere. The only thing slightly negative I can say concerns the consistency with the side potatoes that come with the "burgers." Sometimes they're delicious. Other times they're under seasoned some. Not a huge issue. The soups are always very fresh tasting and usually really good. I recommend the Mung Bean if it's available. read more

Well worth the significant drive off I-5 well north of Roseburg. Nice for a country drive day. Note the hours are currently just 10-3 Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Very clean place with currently only outside seating or takeout. Limited menu but all is excellent, and vegetarian. Danish and apple turnovers are great and the fruit is largely grown on site. Homemade soups, empanadas, wraps. Very good baba ghanouj (eggplant dip) though not as smoky flavored as I prefer. (My daughter thinks what I prefer tastes like an ashtray! )I have not tried their homemade ice creams but they are supposed to be very fine. Their bakery breads are very dense and some are quite large loaves. The seeded variety is huge and very reasonably priced. Overall pricing is somewhat high but quality ingredients cost more. They do sometimes run out of some pastries or breads or cafe items so best to come earlier rather than just before closing. There seems always to be a small line to order, sometimes means a short wait. Service once ordered is pretty quick. There is a lovely garden with tables and seating behind the building and any cafe orders will be delivered there to you when ready. Limited plastic utensils are just spoons and forks. Cutting any wraps or empanadas is tricky without even plastic knives. read more

It's not surrounded by water and has no beaming light but I'll let them get away with the name anyway because their food lights the way to heaven! (I know, I really tried too hard on that one, but seriously!) I do want to thank my yeep friend Michele R for her review because I would never have known about this wonderful place. I certainly would not have found it as it is off the beaten path, despite the supposed lighthouse to guide me. Everyone else found the restaurant though as it was hopping when we showed up. The bakery puts out incredible bread and cookies! Baked goods were coming out of the oven piping hot the whole time we were there. They did run out of the jalapeno cheese bread though. Maybe that does not get as much attention due to the peppers. They believe in sustainable/local and all that beautiful stuff. Oh and many of the servers looked quite beautiful, probably because they ate so well. They all follow a certain religion, much like some yoga persuasion, I was told by the cashier when I asked. He also stated that he did not give up his previous religion. He just also embraced this one. You walk in and there are lots of organic products that you can purchase, including even things like legumes, pasta, nuts, rice, etc. from the bins. There are herbs, spices as well as other grocery items. You head to the cashier and place your food order there. They will then hand you a gourd with a number on it and will find you. We sat outside since it was so gorgeous. Their grounds are very nice as well. The food was outstanding. I had their vegetarian reuben and squash soup. Best squash soup. They know that vegetarians like spices and herbs. Some vegetarian places do not indulge us with that. Don't ask me why. Last time I checked spices were vegetarian too. Every bite I took made me feel like I was being cured for all my illnesses I've had. Very healthy and very delicious. We walked out of there with 2 loaves of their bread, one was a walnut vanilla and the other was a raisin bread. We made incredible french toast for breakfast the next day. Growing up in Sutherlin, coming back and going to the Lighthouse feels like walking in the twilight zone. In a area dominated rednecks with pickups trucks, fast food and chain restaurants, and Wal-Mart lovers, lies this little vegetarian bakery in the middle of the country....and it's packed to the gills every day they are open! And not just by the random hippies in the area, by the good ol' boys too. I saw a 300 lb logger in Husqvarna suspenders eating a Veggie Club! WTF is going on? Although I am still stumped on how anyone ever got a bunch of backwoods ultraconservatives to walk into a vegetarian bakery and try it, it's not surprising that they keep coming back once they have. Their fresh baked breads are fantastic, their food is made to be good (not just vegetarian good), and they have a pretty impressive selection of health food items that is hard to match within 100 miles of there. Shit, they had items I can't find at the Whole Foods by my house. I couldn't be happier to see a place like the Lighthouse raise the standard on what eating out in Douglas County means these days. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant/store on our way to some hot springs in OR. We were starving and lost when we walked into what we thought might be some kind of community center; were pleasantly overwhelmed with what we found inside. They use as many organic, seasonal, and local ingredients as they can get their hands on: and it shows! We split the quesadilla and a cream soda. Here is their description of the quesadilla: "A flour tortilla with grilled onions, mushrooms, spinach, & mozzarella cheese, garnished with fresh parsley and served with homemade salsa, & sour cream." Found this place while we spent a weekend wine tasting in the Umpqua Valley. Food was good (probably excellent for the area) but we're spoiled by Portland's standards. I'm a vegetarian and BF is not. He got the veggie burger with three cheeses and I had the portabella sandwich special. My sandwich was incredibly messy (used like a dozen napkins) but the bread was grilled and saturated with oil. I tried to sop some of it up but the bread wasn't giving it up. I'm a bread baker and wished I was able to taste the actual bread over the oil. Ended up with a stomachache later but I do admit to being sensitive to excess oil. BF said the veggie patty tasted like it wasn't made "in house" and he felt that his home fries (came with the burger) were also very oily. Again, I reiterate that we regularly have access to fresh, well-cooked food so our standards may be a little high for the Roseburg/Umpqua area. Vegetarians and vegans will have no trouble eating here since the Lighthouse Center Bakery doesn't offer any meat! If we're in the neighborhood again, I think I'll order a salad and soup to avoid all that oil. They do a brisk business and seem to be very popular. What an absolute gem. This used to be a dumpy gas station that received a COMPLETE renovation. Wooden shelves, new flooring, custom display shelves, and a hand built wood burning oven in the back add up to amazing food. They have a great selection of canned, dry, and fresh goods you can take home. They also offer a great menu (mostly salads and sandwiches), pastries, and some of the best bread you will ever have. Three years ago before moving to Roseburg and this placed fascinated me. While I cannot remember what I first got I have gone there a number of times with friends and family, I have gotten the chocolate chip cookie and it was delicious the chocolate was gooie and there's walnuts which made it so tasty. The Veggie Club is wonderful and very yummy. Their homemade bread is so good! One of the things Lighthouse is known for is their sticky buns, order it warm and with coffee, absolutely amazing. I have had no complaints about their food, and I'm looking forward to trying more. The food is organic and vegetarian, stop by there and try something, you won't be disappointed. read more

I hadn't been here for several years and found it still going strong. This is operated by a religious group that does not serve meat. However, it has very good sandwiches and outstanding bread. I bought a loaf of pecan raison bread to take home. In the best French tradition it had chewy crust and a firm interior with excellent taste. The cookie I tried was chewy but otherwise an ordinary chocolate chip. (I prefer chewy to crispy cookies.) read more

My dad brought me here about a year ago and since i have Made an effort to revisit it everytime i returned to the area. Everybody i have brought there [aunt, friends, boyfriend] aren't vegetarian as i am, but they enjoyed the handcrafted organic food as much as i do. Now that i moved to the area, its one of my boyfriend and my's favorite lunch spot. Surrounded by rolling hills and green pastures--a car only every half hour or so, there is nothing nicer than to sit outside on a warm sping afternoon and enjoy a hearty burger. Always a pleasure to stop here! Bright and airy with a super friendly staff. Food is fresh and amazing and I've never regretted what I ordered. Their breads are amazing too,, as well as their pastries. Get here a little early because it fills up fast. The only negative is traveling with my aging father- they need to offer a few chairs with arms so the elderly can get in and out of the chairs without as much help from the people around them.
