My wife and I finally purchased our new home. We had spoken to many moving companies and Lighthouse moving really impressed us. John the owner, was very informative, professional and polite. Very pleased with the service & responsiveness provided by Lighthouse Movers. As background, before retiring part of my responsibilities included coordinating moves for our offices throughout the Western US. I moved as many as 10,000 in one weekend which means I'm very experienced dealing with movers & all the problems you can imagine encountering. Recently, we needed to move out of the 1-bedroom apt my parents had occupied. It was unexpected & there wasn't a lot of time to plan & research movers. After a few phone calls, Lighthouse was the only one who answered when I called. John was thorough in explaining their services & asking the right questions to understand the scope of our move. The scope was a bit challenging. There were items going to 3 different homes in the Twin Cities + items to be donated. And I didn't have time or the inclination to pack. Therefore, with John's recommendation, two people came the day before the move with packing materials to pack & label all items for each of the drop off locations. The day of the move, 3 people arrived to handle the move. Everyone was helpful, respectful of our items & ready to do whatever I asked to finish the move. Take that off the wall? No problem. Wrap that even more securely? You bet. Change my mind & move something to a different location? Sure! Now, unless you are incredibly fortunate, the chances that something won't go perfectly in a move happens. Therefore, one of the most important aspects of any move is how a problem is handled. And, we had a problem - some things that should have arrived at Stop 3, didn't. I let John know & he was on it. One item was still on the truck & delivered right away. One item ended up at Stop 2. Super stressful day with this moving company. John, the owner, was great when I first contacted him. I explained we were selling a lot of our furniture to the our home buyers but that we had a very large home, full basement, full garage, front porch and back patio furniture (both large wicker and large metal) and all the boxes that come with moving at 5,000 square foot house. He said it was no problem and said he would call to confirm the day before the move. One month later, no call the day prior so at 4:00pm I called him. John seemed surprised and I am pretty confident he did NOT have us on the scheduled. Three men showed up right on time and got started right away. I showed them around and said that John said we could leave up our art because he said they would take it down and wrap it before putting it in the truck. About an hour in, one of the Rick, started to get really angry. He was swearing and barking orders at the other two (the other two gentlemen were great). Turns out, John told these guys it would be a quick move and Rick was absolutely furious. Swearing and throwing our things around. I asked him why he was so angry and he said, "Because John is a fuc*!%ing liar. When I see him I am going to kick his a#$%!". I can handle some bad language - but I also have a daughter - and he continued to have an adult tantrum the entire 8-hour day. We moved just a mile down the road and John said if it took two trips, then no problem because we were so close. Nope. Rick was beyond angry that they had to go back. First he said he was not going to. What?! We still had items at the house. They did got back but still left soooo many things at the house (items clearly marked to be moved like two window air conditioners, our shop vac, paddle board, poker table, two lawn chairs as well as ALL of the art still on the walls). All in plain sight and all marked with tape as to where they should go in the new house. At the new house, Rick dropped our artificial X-mas tree down the stairs, threw it in the corner of the basement (right on top of my boxed wedding dress) then covered it up with a golf bag carrier. John first said he would reimburse me at a fair market price, but today he refused to pay to it - saying they had to come back the next day for the items the guys forgot so I got that for free. Really? He also said WE told be guys the house was empty - not true. It had rained the night before and they did not cover any of the carpet or rugs and tracked dirt all over and did nothing to clean it up. After a full day of moving, I had to sweep and mop so as not to destroy our new place. I was halfway through cleaning the basement stairs before I realized I should take photos - it was way worse and when all over the basement - to to a lesser degree, the entire house. DO NOT hire this company and if you do and you get Rick - be sure your small children are not around and don't expect to get reimbursed for anything he throws down the stairs. This was the last text I just got from John: "You know people have problems sometimes. They have meltdowns. Everyone has them. Everyone. I try to work with people to help them. It's the only way anyone can grow and change and evolve. This was a really lousy day for Rick. I'm keeping him to smaller moves going forward. He doesn't seem to have any problems with smaller moves. Your move was very large we should have had 4 workers in it. That added to the stress." I was moving from one house to another about 2 miles away, and I knew I'd never be able to move all our stuff myself. Our previous move one year earlier and been with a big national company and had been a horrible experience. Just unbelievably bad, and so expensive. I knew I didn't want to deal with one of the big boys again, so I began searching on craigslist for ads. Of course that led me to a bunch of junk, but also to some legitimately licensed moving companies. I narrowed it down to three companies and got quotes from each of them. In the end I went with Lighthouse Moving because the owner, John Hathaway, was responding to my questions himself, and the level of communication from him was much better than the other two companies. I am not sorry that I chose them. I hired them to provide a team of three movers and a truck, at a reasonable hourly rate. All three guys works really hard. There was definitely no going slow to pad the time. They did a decent job, and treated me with respect, which is a lot more than I can say for the horrible movers from the big national company. WORST MOVERS EVER!! They are slow, expensive, and not very professional. They took forever to load the truck, then came back for a second load, had to repack the truck because they couldn't get it all in, and then still needed to make a 3rd trip. DON'T HIRE THEM!! We called John to complain and he was rude and didn't care. He acts all nice & friendly when you schedule the move, but then is a jerk if you have a complaint. John posted a come about the fact that they "happily" didn't break anything. I didn't include that in the original review but yes they did! Let me start by saying that I didn't want to hire movers, but my wife insisted. I was very impressed; the movers disassembled and wrapped everything, taped the power cords to every electronic, and reassembled everything back at our new house. Money well spent! I would recommend them to anyone, especially those worried about the high cost of hiring movers. We called three other places and they were all more than $350 higher than Lighthouse. I see one review said they were a day late. There isn't a written contract as some other pricier companies offer, but we had three days to move out so coming the next day wouldn't have been the end of the world to me. Then he told me to be quite. All he did was kept telling me what services they can't do. Then hung up on me. then I called back and asked for the owner and he said I'm the owner and hung up again. Horrible experience! They were late both days. The move was supposed to be a two day move. One for packing and one for moving. The second day they told us they would take a 45 minute lunch. We waited for them for 1 1/2hrs without even a phone call. Later that day, they informed us that the job had turned into a 3 day job. I would have understood, given the sub zero temperatures, except they literally handed is a bill and walked out. Our beds (three kids) were in two different locations. I called John and was told that there are people in the world that don't have food or beds and that I shouldn't be so upset. We fired them. I'm sure my review would be more positive if they had shown up, contacted me that they were delayed, or had acknowledged that they simply forgot about me. John Hathaway was super nice on the phone on June 10 for a June 14 move. I still have the number on my electronic log and notes from our conversation. However, he did not show up, did not take calls that day, and finally left a voice mail asking if I was sure I had the right company because he had no record of our conversation and they were very busy. SEVEN DAYS AFTER I requested a quote online and had replied to an email with the date I needed service, I got an email saying "Just saw this e-mail. If you are still looking for a mover its best to call us. I don't get a chance to look at my e-mails very often. Busy out in the field most of the time!" If they're not able to respond to emails in a timely manner for a business that involves scheduling services, then their web site shouldn't give you the expectation that they are handling quotes and scheduling electronically and should direct you to specifically call instead. I emailed him back and said I went with someone else. I also expressed that my reasons were that (A) they took too long and (B) I'd had some reservations about whether they'd be reliable/trustworthy based on some points on their web site (surly/grumpy looking staff) lack of relevant photos and copywriting -- and given their lack of response time and his less-than-professional late reply, I felt those concerns were justified. I offered a couple pointers on how they could improve customer service and the overall web site experience for prospective customers. It was too late to get my business, but I believe in giving helpful feedback. ONE DAY after sending my feedback, John, the owner, replied with a very lengthy, defensive and argumentative diatribe. He couldn't be bothered to get a quote generated in less than a week, but he could spend a great deal of time writing multiple paragraphs to someone who wasn't ever going to be his customer. His response absolutely reaffirmed my choice in not hiring them as my movers. They MIGHT be cheaper than some other, more professional places, if you don't care about that kind of stuff -- but I wouldn't know because I never got that information from them. I do, however, know how many moves they do per year, their rate of growth for the past five years, the owner's college majors (all three of them!) and that he doesn't like "vague standards of socially acceptable" marketing, plus some old-timey nugget of "wisdom" his dad used to say. (Eyes rolling so hard I could check out my own @$$!) I fully expect him to come back with another lengthy diatribe via email or to try to refute this review here, like he did for the one other person who left a less-than-stellar review here. Doesn't matter to me, though - I'll never hire his company for my moving needs, and I'd never recommend this company to anyone I know. ALERT- DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!!!My experience with this moving company was not as I expected. Not only did the owner, John, ask me how old I was in our initial conversation because I "sounded young," he was rude leading up the move and his times for arrival kept changing. He also avoided my calls/texts. I had to get my mom to call him so he would answer his phone. Moving is already stressful enough and I did not feel as if I would be able to depend on him or his team. They surprisingly did show up almost on time, but John and one other mover came into my apt. with no mask on during a pandemic and did not have one- I had to give them both a mask to wear. Why didn't he expect him or his team members to wear a mask? Also, my apt building does not allow people not to wear them. The experience was awkward and they wrapped all of my things in newspaper as opposed to neutral paper, which made me worry about my things being covered in ink. They also did not have any wardrobe boxes for my hanging clothes so they folded them in boxes. They also ran out of supplies when packing my stuff and did not tape all my boxes shut, but rather folded the tops. Finally, they packed my things without thought or strategy and had to take everything out of my storage unit to repack it. Although their prices are cheap, I would have gone with another company to avoid the hassle and stress. John's team was nice and hardworking, but my conversations with John were uncomfortable, unprofessional, he makes excuses and is condescending. He is also irresponsible with his team and I heard them arguing because they had not been informed about another job following mine. John also got in an argument with my mom when she asked him to pack my lamps. He said "Didn't you see us putting the boxes and paper away? Now I have to get another box!" And he tried to make this situation feel like our fault. I'm a military Veteran with several moves under my belt and the most important thing to me is a company with integrity-do not hire this company for your move. This is the worst pack job I have ever seen and it actually makes me sad to see my possessions treated this poorly. I used Lighthouse Moving 2 weeks ago for my move. They were not the cheapest, but when I called for bids the owner, John, seemed like a nice professional guy. I was wrong, John was unorganized, unprofessional, and disrespectful. I called the day before like he asked, and he had no idea who I was and doubted I even had a move the next day. I was a little shocked, because he seemed so organized when I got the bid from him. The day of the move I called 15 minutes before they were scheduled, and was told the guys would be on the way. He proceeded to ask me how much stuff I had in detail, he asked me all these questions a month ago, when I got the estimate from him. I answered all his questions again, and he told me his guys would be leaving any minute. I called 45 minutes late, now 30 minutes before the scheduled time, and he explained that his guys were running late, but they'd leave any minute. I called 40 minutes later, now 1hr and 10 minutes late, and he says the guys should be there any minute. They arrive 5 minutes later, now worries sometimes delays happen, but more organization would have been nice to plan my day as my cleaner now had to work around my movers. The movers are very nice, move decently quick (not the fastest movers I've used, but not the slowest). Everything gets packed up, and I let them know how to get to my new places- it is 7 minutes away. I leave and arrive at my place, 40 minutes later I called John and was inquiring in the guys were lost. John is immediately defensive, saying his guys don't get lost. I say you might want to call them just to check. John then proceeds to ask why it took 2.25 hours to load up my stuff. I respond saying I don't know, and I thought we would have had it done a little faster than that. He then says I must have a lot of stuff- I say I don't really think so. He then says I must have slow elevators, I tell him the 2 elevators in my building aren't really slow. John says, it is not my guys, because they have been with me a long time and they work quick, I reply with okay. He gets really defensive then and says he is going to drive over and see how much stuff I have. I tell him he doesn't have to, but he can if he wants- it is a Saturday evening. The movers call me, because they can't find the place, and I guide them in. They get about 3 loads of things in when John arrives. He takes 1 look a meet, a person of color, and demands payment immediately. Now I have already paid the deposit like he asked for. He demands $800, which is more than the amount should be, right now or he is taking the rest of my stuff and leaving. I'm shocked. He continues that it is MN law that whenever a mover demands payment you need to pay them immediately. He continues, that I was deceptive about the amount of stuff I had and that he was burned by someone last week, and it is not going to happen again. I tell him that his is being incredibly rude and disrespectful, he doesn't care, he just wants money. I walk silently to my bag, fuming I count out 8 100 bills and explain again, how unprofessional and in poor taste this is. He doesn't care. The move continues. I'm internally upset, embarrassed, humiliated, but the move continues. They bring in 2 bags of clothes, that aren't mine, and a chair that also isn't mine. I tell them these are not my things and they say sorry. Given this current time of Covid, not cool. They also lost a screw to hold my TV on my mount. They told me they will find it in the truck after the leave, and set my TV down against the couch so it doesn't fall down. They finish the move and are getting in the truck to leave, when I realize they never brought the screw up. I run just before they leave and they tell me they didn't find it, and intentionally didn't tell me and was just going to leave. I ask John if he was just going to leave me a TV that doesn't work on my couch. He said no. I said okay what were you going to do? He says, well we can go get you a screw- it is 8pm on a Saturday. I explain that is unlikely, he then shrugs and says you can get a screw tomorrow and starts to leave. The other mover who has watched John treat me badly this whole time tries to fix the problem, but John tells him to stop and says we are leaving. In summation, the owner was rude, unprofessional, unorganized, and made me feel like humiliated. The worst part of everything is that after he was a jerk, he tried to worm his way out of not telling me they lost the screw and to sneak away. One day late! Yes, you read that correctly. If you want your move to go smoothly DO NOT hire Lighthouse Moving. John the owner is old and confused. He cannot keep his crews and scheduled moves straight. I called a month early to schedule and I was given an arrival time of 2:00 Saturday. At 1:40 I was told by John the guys were leaving Hopkins and after their break they would be at our condo in an hour. At 3:00 I called him and he was definitely confused. He said the guys were unloading a high rise and it would be a few hours. High rise in Hopkins?? I reminded him of what he said at 1:40. He just kept rambling on and on, and I realized then he sent the movers to another appointment. He realized it too, but he offered NO APOLOGY, NO SYMPATHY, NOTHING. All he did was make excuses, talking over me, and blame the homeowners for lying about what they had to move. Desperate, because at this point no other movers were available, we decided to wait. I have never felt so mad and helpless. It was not what I needed considering moving is stressful enough. Around 6:00 John called and suggested we wait till Sunday morning, because the guys already had two moves for the day. What choice did we have?? What about the appointment I made over a month ago?? What if we had to be out that day?? Still NO APOLOGY, NO SYMPATHY, NOTHING. When the movers arrived they knew about yesterday's situation and said John overbooks ALL THE TIME and wanted us to know it was not their fault. Don't risk your move being delayed by one day. Hire a professional moving company that honors their appointment and believes in customer service. This is not my first time hiring movers, I know what to expect and this was the worse experience I have ever had. I don't know how Lighthouse got an A+ rating through Angie's list or any of the good reviews on reviews on Google and Yelp, but I am here to warn you to AVOID LIGHTHOUSE MOVING. read more

They quoted us 4 hours and it took them over 9 hours to move our small house when we had all of the boxes packed and on the main level ready for them to bring out the door. The movers were slow, the customer service was poor and we were unfortunately very disappointed with them. Two of the movers were an hour late and the third was almost 2 hours late. When you start a move at 4pm (because we were quoted a 4 hour move) and you don't complete it until 2am, it is pretty frustrating! Added note: we were completely honest about the size of our house and that we had a storage unit. We discussed the number of bedroom, furniture, and size of our storage unit. You can only fit so much into a small house. This is a classic case of a moving company underbidding you to get your business and then have you up against the wall in the middle of your move with your stuff in their truck telling you it is going to take more time. I move a lot for work and out of all the moving companies I've had, these guys were the most professional and really took care of my belongings. Everything that was breakable was wrapped with plastic and padding. I also have a grand piano that took an hour to move from previous companies but these guys did it with ease. They were surprisingly much cheaper than everyone else's rates! I got Timothy and Carey as movers where as other companies had 3-4 people move my stuff which equals a bigger bill. I have moved many times--locally and interstate. This move with Lighthouse is by far the worst experience. Movers were late and complained about the cold. It was cold but within a few degrees of the forecast. The biggest problem however was that there was no communication about delays and the owner was very rude. I would not use this compnay again, and I would not recommend it. The first issue I had was with the commute time. I was moving about three hours away. It took them much longer than it took me. I realize they are driving large trucks that are loaded down with furniture, but it's hard for me to imagine it took them five to six hours. And you will be expected to pay for their lunch and dinner breaks. The movers stopped at the casino on the way back for dinner at the buffet, and that time was factored into my bill as "commute time." I would also recommend getting any agreement you make in writing. As an incentive to use this company, the owner offered me a deal that I would only be charged for two hours for the commute back, even though it is longer than two hours. My bill did not reflect this arrangement and when I called the owner to discuss it, he denied ever making that agreement with me. Thankfully I had the email he sent me that laid out the agreement explicitly, but when I read it back to him he acted confused and said he wasn't sure that was what he meant. Then he said he shouldn't be held to the agreement because he underestimated the distance of the move (even though I gave him both addresses well in advance of making the agreement). There were just a lot of poor excuses he came up with to try to charge me significantly more than the agreement we had made. That being said, I did think the movers did a good job. My furniture was wrapped so that it wasn't damaged and they put furniture in the rooms I requested. They even moved a dresser for me when I changed my mind about what room I wanted it in. I did think it was tacky that they immediately requested I tip them, but I guess the most important thing was that my belongings arrived safe. read more
