Super stressful day with this moving company. John, the owner, was great when I first contacted him. I explained we were selling a lot of our furniture to the our home buyers but that we had a very large home, full basement, full garage, front porch and back patio furniture (both large wicker and large metal) and all the boxes that come with moving at 5,000 square foot house. He said it was no problem and said he would call to confirm the day before the move. One month later, no call the day prior so at 4:00pm I called him. John seemed surprised and I am pretty confident he did NOT have us on the scheduled. Three men showed up right on time and got started right away. I showed them around and said that John said we could leave up our art because he said they would take it down and wrap it before putting it in the truck. About an hour in, one of the Rick, started to get really angry. He was swearing and barking orders at the other two (the other two gentlemen were great). Turns out, John told these guys it would be a quick move and Rick was absolutely furious. Swearing and throwing our things around. I asked him why he was so angry and he said, "Because John is a fuc*!%ing liar. When I see him I am going to kick his a#$%!". I can handle some bad language - but I also have a daughter - and he continued to have an adult tantrum the entire 8-hour day. We moved just a mile down the road and John said if it took two trips, then no problem because we were so close. Nope. Rick was beyond angry that they had to go back. First he said he was not going to. What?! We still had items at the house. They did got back but still left soooo many things at the house (items clearly marked to be moved like two window air conditioners, our shop vac, paddle board, poker table, two lawn chairs as well as ALL of the art still on the walls). All in plain sight and all marked with tape as to where they should go in the new house. At the new house, Rick dropped our artificial X-mas tree down the stairs, threw it in the corner of the basement (right on top of my boxed wedding dress) then covered it up with a golf bag carrier. John first said he would reimburse me at a fair market price, but today he refused to pay to it - saying they had to come back the next day for the items the guys forgot so I got that for free. Really? He also said WE told be guys the house was empty - not true. It had rained the night before and they did not cover any of the carpet or rugs and tracked dirt all over and did nothing to clean it up. After a full day of moving, I had to sweep and mop so as not to destroy our new place. I was halfway through cleaning the basement stairs before I realized I should take photos - it was way worse and when all over the basement - to to a lesser degree, the entire house. DO NOT hire this company and if you do and you get Rick - be sure your small children are not around and don't expect to get reimbursed for anything he throws down the stairs. This was the last text I just got from John: "You know people have problems sometimes. They have meltdowns. Everyone has them. Everyone. I try to work with people to help them. It's the only way anyone can grow and change and evolve. This was a really lousy day for Rick. I'm keeping him to smaller moves going forward. He doesn't seem to have any problems with smaller moves. Your move was very large we should have had 4 workers in it. That added to the stress." Notice nowhere in there is an apology for the lack of professionalism and it appears it's my fault he didn't send enough guys...

Poorly wrapped chair- I had to ask them to re-wrap

Minneapolis moving services are some of the most expensive anywhere I've experienced. I hope that simply means that MN companies pay their labor well. We paid $1365 + $180 tip (optional, but come on) for a 3-man crew at $260/hr (2-hour minimum), and we obviously also provided snacks and drinks (they declined breakfast). For comparison, in San Francisco it was $250/hr for 5 men. The rate was with both the weekday discount and winter pricing. Weekend would have been $285/hr for 3 men, and $345 for 4 men. There was no trip fee. Robert, in particular was incredible; he moved a 6 drawer dresser down a tight stairwell alone. They needed to remove the front door at one point, but did so without issue. They also were happy to use our own furniture pads and plastic wrap (leftover from a cross-country move). At one point, they had to back the huge truck through the alley on icy ground, and had no problems. Also, it was easy to provide them inventory by email, and easy to reach them by phone. Lots of moving companies were annoying to contact, which is partly why we chose this one. One a few minor issues: one piece of furniture was shedding pieces of wood. I think they were reinforcements put on by previous owners. I didn't even know they were there, and it doesn't seem to have affected the furniture. They also forgot a couple of items in the yard, including a big smoker we had to move on our own. It's partly my fault, I told them we were good to go. Also, we were made to sign a lot of paperwork, and at various points it was for things like "you confirm that nothing is broken and everything has arrived" and, like, it's weeks later and I'm still unpacking, there is no way I would have known for sure. It's fine, because so far we have had no issues, but if someone did have issues it might feel like being strong-armed via contract. The guys in the truck were just doing their jobs, so it's the process that is problematic more than anything. We would use these guys again!

My brother-on-law moved 3 trailers full of stuff, going back and forth from Hugo to Blaine before they even got to my house the first time, we all left at the same time. I think they were intentionally slow so they could charge us 4x's the amount quoted to me for an entire day (which is only 4 hours for them). They also broke multiple items, even with their "insurance" I was not reimbursed for anything. I also had to have them correct the contract 5 times before they actually got it correct. This company is horrible, if I could give them negative stars I would. This company is so crooked they are a circle! Response: your crew did not take an unpaid lunch break, it was included in the time they added to my bill at the end. They also very much pressure me to tip them because, as they put it, "This company does not pay us very well." Not only was I quoted roughly $1500, and it ended up costing me almost $5K for the service, I ended up tipping them because they know where I live and I didn't want anything to happen to my wife, and your crew took more breaks than they actually worked. Regardless of what you say, your company is crooked, incompetent, and needs to be put out of business. My next report is to the BBB!

We were told they try and get the estimate within 10% yet this is a 30% increase. We specifically requested an in person walk through ( versus a remote walk though) so they could actually see what needed to be moved to aid them in giving us an accurate estimate . A slight adjustment is to be expected but $2000 is extreme. It is not our fault they miscalculated. We would've gone with a different mover if Metcalf quoted us as much as they are charging now. It makes it seem as if they under bid to secure the job and then charge far more afterwards. Additionally, when we walked through the house after they packed it, several drawers in the kitchen had been left unpacked and totally full. Storage in the family room built in still had items in it. Also, we have missing items including fine dining silver (a wedding gift) and jewelry among other items. Lastly, one of the movers became very argumentative with us after he ripped up the plastic floor protector and refused to put it back down even though they were still moving boxes into the house. Even the other movers were confused by this man's behavior- it was very strange and totally inappropriate. On the plus side, most of the movers were very nice and hard working. The 2 gentlemen who came to unpack were exceedingly nice, worked hard and had great attitudes. Again, the list of the items which may not be replaceable is making this move very difficult. Moving is hard enough as it is, there shouldn't be major issues like these from a company that charges thousands of dollars to supposedly make your move easier . We cannot in good faith, and would not recommend Metcalf Moving and Storage.

The tall guy was overall very abrasive from the start, while the short guy was always really friendly. One of the first things the tall guy said was that we wouldn't make the estimated time and he didn't understand how it was determined, etc... (spoiler: we made time). While moving, I heard a loud noise, like something falling down all the stairs. I asked if something broke and they said "nope, nothing broke." (See attached picture, showing broken piece off of an expensive table). When we finished moving to the new place, I tip handsomely (as I always do) and that did seem to change the tall guy's demeanor.

I hired movers in Minneapolis and loaded up the truck. Four days later, u-pack arrived with my stuff ready for my Washington DC movers to unload it. If I had one complaint (I don't, but /if/ I did,), it would be that u-pack won't help you on the other end of the transaction. If you're moving to a suburb or a place with a loading dock, you're 100% fine. I was moving into the city and needed to have parking for this semi, which proved very difficult since I didn't yet live in the city. Even so, U-Pack worked with me to find a visible solution and ended up storing my items on the truck for a few extra days until my parking permits could take effect. Final comment on this: on what was already a very challenging and stressful move, their dispatchers and drivers were a 6/5 stars. They were so nice and patient. I told one dispatcher the problem with parking and she said "you sound so stressed, sweetie. Don't worry, we'll find you a solution. Welcome to DC." Just a word of advice though: When loading your contents, don't call to schedule your pickup until it's totally ready! They don't offer pickup windows. I asked them to pick it up at the end of the day (which they said they'd try but couldn't guarantee it) and it came at 10am - yikes I wasn't ready! Thankfully they came back the next day for no charge. Barb on the phone was really personable and pleasant. She gave me a suggestion on what to check out on my road trip and it was awesome!
