I had occasion to be in Burlington at lunch one day recently, and decided I needed to stop in. Zack's definitely fits that "area establishment" vibe, and people were coming in and out quickly... now I see why. They get you moving fast! I share John C's thoughts: Within about 15 seconds, a gentleman asked what we wanted. We had barely gotten the menu out when he said, "We have hamburgers and hot dogs. Hot dogs come with chili, onions, and slaw." Unlike John C I opted for chili cheese fries, because I am a glutton for punishment, but otherwise, got the hot dogs the same way, but add cheese. Food was out in a flash, and like John, i kind of wish more care was put into it to up the quality. I don't need my stuff lightning fast. Anyhow, just to be honest, I didn't care for the overall flavor of anything in particular. The hot dog franks and bun were pretty average, no toasting or buttering, frank was barely warm. The chili was HEAVY on cumin and pretty much overpowered everything, including the cheese. Chili cheese fries were a bit better, you could kind of thin out the chili and bring more balance to the cheese sauce. I ate these with a fork. I think if I visited again, I would go the burger route and get these for my chili cheese fix. Overall, I am glad to try an area staple, but it just wasn't my thing. At a place like this, there is surely a regular fan base that likes it exactly how it is, and I would never want to change that. Do your thing for them, it just wasn't my thing!

The grandson of the original owner sold the business in 2021, after of 80 years of ownership by the same family. Things have changes some, there is not the cozy feel of a family spot, none of the wait staffs that had been there for years remain, the replacement are mainly young and a bit distracted. The three main components that made the hot dog here great generally remain - great chili, soft buns, and Zack's made in house hot sauce. The dogs on this visit were very good, but I will get them to go in the future.

I decide to stop in. The menu looked interesting esp that fried bologna sandwich but i was there to try out the dogs. At the window, im speaking to and elderly gentleman about NC State Athletics and was not in a rush to order at all. Just so happens, the rude guy working the window had a different thought in mind and literally said talk to me not to him if you're trying to order. So i turn my attention to the disrespectful guy, and start to place my order and he walks off and tells the young lady to finish taking my order. Just your rude customer service alone wins you a nice one star rating. You're in customer service he hospitable. Maybe you were having a bad day or something, but guess what being rude is never acceptable. And let me set the scene, the elderly gentleman and i are the only ones standing out there. And i was in no rush to order bc i was in the middle it a grown up conversation. Do better bud The hot dog Chili- 2/10 can do without. Def tastes like it's of of a hormel can Slaw- 1/10 Bun- 2/10 felt like i was at a hot dog eating contest soaking my bun in water Hot dog- 6/10 after i removed everything except ketchup and mustard. And added extra ketchup since there was hardly any on it (specifically asked for ketchup) Moving forward if i ever come by this spot, i would just get the dog with ketchup and mustard and light steaming of bun They def have the good ice pellets though. 2 stars for the ice and the dog with ketchup and mustard only

I have passed by this restaurant before around lunch and it was busy. The menu includes ample dog-themed options. We chose the Beef Tailwagger (2 hotdogs, fries, and a drink for $9.39). The hot dogs and fries were nothing special. The tea was good, very sweet. Our order was accurate and assembled quickly. It was pretty much ready right after we paid. Overall, the meal was okay but definitely not worth the price.

Sup Dogs is hot dog heaven, full stop…read more If you love a creative, loaded, over-the-top hot dog, this is your place. The Firehouse Dog is a must -- bold, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with just the right kick. The cheesy jalapeño dog is everything it should be: melty, spicy, messy in the best way. And the taco dog? Somehow ridiculous and incredible at the same time. The fries are crispy, seasoned, and absolutely addictive, but let's talk about the real stars: the sauces. There are so many good ones that choosing becomes the hardest part of the visit. Drizzle, dip, smother -- you literally cannot go wrong. Even the buns deserve love -- soft, toasted just right, and strong enough to hold up to all that delicious chaos. Everything here is done right, from the flavors to the quality to the fun vibe. Sup Dogs is one of those places that makes you excited to come back before you've even finished eating. Five stars, no debate.

It was freezing today outside and we were seated by the door. Everything was fine until the hostess propped the door open. They left the door wide open and everyone in the front seating area was miserable. I asked if they could please close it and I was told no. They said the hostess stands by the door on game days. So they really don't care if their customers are comfortable or not. That says a lot. They certainly could've made adjustments given the cold and windy day. But our waitress was kind enough to move us when a table opened up in the back. That was a big relief and much more comfortable. Now to their food. The bacon cheese fries were great but didn't have bacon so we had to get them to bring back to sprinkle on top. The ranch was excellent and we all liked the app. My youngest got a grilled cheese which he enjoyed. My oldest got a burger which he said was okay, but nothing special. But the real disappointment comes in with the hot dogs. My first dog was cold, like unappetizingly cold. The waitress was very nice and took care of it immediately. However, the second dog came out almost immediately. If you like a boiled hot dog that's reheated in a microwave, you'll like their hot dogs. But I want a quality grilled hot dog. We'll stick to our ol' faithful CH burger joint from here on out. And I hope next time your customers are extremely uncomfortable on a freezing day sitting right next to the open door, you exercise some courtesy and close the door next time.

The Roast Grill feels less like a restaurant and more like a preserved piece of mid-20th-century Americana hidden in plain sight along West Street. The narrow counter, wood-paneled walls, neon beer signs, Coca-Cola memorabilia, handwritten notices, old photographs, Hurricanes tributes, and decades of accumulated objects create an atmosphere that simply cannot be manufactured today. The place reminded me a little of Chicago's famous Billy Goat Tavern--especially the feeling of discovering something authentic tucked beneath an increasingly overbuilt urban streetscape. I ordered two hot dogs all the way with mustard, onions, chili, and slaw--absolutely NO ketchup, of course--along with a Coke in a glass bottle. The chili is legendary and reportedly takes up to three days to prepare. Whether that is folklore or fact, it certainly gives the hot dogs a flavor unlike almost anywhere else in Raleigh. One of my favorite details was the mounted goat wearing a red hat beneath the neon beer signs. It somehow fits perfectly within the visual layering and quirky personality of the interior. Even the traditions remain intact. At the end of the meal, every customer receives a Tootsie Roll. Places like the Roast Grill are becoming increasingly rare. It is not just a hot dog stand--it is a living piece of Raleigh history. If interested, you can view my post in "The Architecture of..." There are about 12 or 13 seats in this spot, and while the building is over 100 years old, it seems fairly well maintained. Parking here can be a real issue. The grill is currently operated by George Poniros, grandson of the folks who originally opened the grill. The building is owned by George's uncle. This is a very non-eclectic operation, narrow menu and simple processes. They offer hot dogs with house made chili, tough chopped slaw (rather dry), onions, and mustard - as a long standing rule, they do not offer ketchup, ever! They closed for about a year during Covid, began a Go Fund Me campaign, resulting in some family tension. They are still open and serving hot dogs, just be aware that the opening hours are closer to an estimate than a fact! These are pretty good hot dogs, made so by the chili and soft buns. I do not consider the hot dogs here to be the best in the Triangle area.

First, Jim is definitely a local joint. Very small restaurant with maybe four or five tables. Service was pretty prompt and they seem to have a really good relationship with the locals as several people in the restaurant seem to be pretty familiar with the people behind the counter. Definitely a good sign in my book. Locals don't usually frequent a spot just for the conversation. I am immediately headed over to Jim's to try it out. And I wasn't disappointed. I ended up ordering the Mexican hotdog and the cheeseburger. The Mexican hotdog was wrapped in bacon with relish, jalapeño, and a couple of other nontraditional items that you would not find a Sonoran style dog. The dog was also a bit on the small side, but it hit the spot. The cheeseburger basket was less than $10 overall so don't expect a huge portioned burger. However, the burger was good, and the fries were hot and plentiful. My favorite thing was the frozen lemonade. A bit on the sweet side, but definitely hit the spot on a 90° day driving in a Bronco with the top down. If I lived in the area, this would probably be one of my favorite junk food spots.
