I travel all over the USA on a weekly basis and I'm always looking for the best hot dog spots. So while driving thru that area on my way to raleigh, i see this little spot. I decide to stop in. The menu looked interesting esp that fried bologna sandwich but i was there to try out the dogs. At the window, im speaking to and elderly gentleman about NC State Athletics and was not in a rush to order at all. Just so happens, the rude guy working the window had a different thought in mind and literally said talk to me not to him if you're trying to order. So i turn my attention to the disrespectful guy, and start to place my order and he walks off and tells the young lady to finish taking my order. Just your rude customer service alone wins you a nice one star rating. You're in customer service he hospitable. Maybe you were having a bad day or something, but guess what being rude is never acceptable. And let me set the scene, the elderly gentleman and i are the only ones standing out there. And i was in no rush to order bc i was in the middle it a grown up conversation. Do better bud The hot dog Chili- 2/10 can do without. Def tastes like it's of of a hormel can Slaw- 1/10 Bun- 2/10 felt like i was at a hot dog eating contest soaking my bun in water Hot dog- 6/10 after i removed everything except ketchup and mustard. While in Hillsborough, we ordered takeout from The Dog House since the exterior looked neat and it had a drive thru. There was no line when we arrived for dinner. I have passed by this restaurant before around lunch and it was busy. The menu includes ample dog-themed options. We chose the Beef Tailwagger (2 hotdogs, fries, and a drink for $9.39). The hot dogs and fries were nothing special. The tea was good, very sweet. Our order was accurate and assembled quickly. It was pretty much ready right after we paid. I ordered 4 boxers, while ordering I asked for extra m, o's, & c. Kaleigh said that she'd HAVE TO CHARGE EXTRA for add'l toppings. I said "$2.95 is more than enough to receive sufficient m, o's, & c.....put the regular amount. At least a third of all four dogs had NO TOPPING AT ALL! NO DISCOUNT FOR VETERANS EITHER! So from a outside look the place looks like a cool little local place to get a good dog. I'd never eaten here so I was in the neighborhood for lunch. I got two chili dogs,fries and Tea. The chili on the hotdog looks like paste but I gave it the benefit of doubt. I should listened to my inner self and thrown it away. Terrible and the fries where bland and not hot at all. The lady at drive thru was very nice. But for 9.50 this was so disappointing. Threw away the rest of hotdog and other hotdog and fries. Tea was excellent! Change that chili it's terrible read more

I still find the hot dogs here to be very good, and I still find the service a bit slow, especially at this location. Often there is only one person in this small, trailer-like spot, especially early and other non-peak hours - today was no exception, but patience is its own reward, especially if you score some nice dogs. Ordered the Collie (M, C, & S), the Boxer (M, C, & O), and the German Shepard (M & Kraut)., and all 3 dogs were excellent. The Chili here is thick & meaty, full of flavor, makes the dogs nice, along with the soft, gooey bun. The kraut was very good, sharp flavor, no bitterness. Don't always order the Boxer, though it is my favorite, because they don't always chop the onions daily, and they can be very bitter. Not the case today, kinda cool. read more

The Dog House was the last stop during a recent Hot Dog Odyssey around the Triangle. Unfortunately, it just didn't live up. I ordered a chili dog. The dog was only warm and the chili was barely warm. The Dog House has always been on my radar as it is situated on the route from my home in Chapel Hill to my Grandmothers house in southwestern Virginia just outside of Hillsborough. In a small strip mall parking lot, the dog-house-shaped abode provides just the restaurant basics, with only a kitchen that you can either walk up to or drive through to order from. While it may not wow you with its simple exterior, the Dog House has huge barks of flavor bursting from their menu in an experience reminiscent of my families backyard cookouts. I had the hot dog done all the way with homemade chili, slaw, mustard and onions. The meatiness of the chili did a good job complementing the sweetness of the slaw. While there was a lack of a real distinct onion flavor that i expect from an onion topped dog, the overall experience of the pooch was not diminished. Their slow cooked baked beans were an excellent side, and their Brunswick stew was a perfect dish for anyone not feeling the canine flavor. Fries weren't bad, but next time I think I'll try their side of 6 hush-puppies (how could hush-puppies not be good at the Dog House?) Overall summary: Great dog, cheap prices as part of a simple but satisfying experience. Big woof to the Dog House! read more

I actually had forgotten to grab my apple turnover and as I had walked away and sat a bench close by, he came out and brought it to me. A cool little hotdog stand located in the parking lot of the Boone Square shopping area just off the interstate. A little white building with a green roof tricked out to look like an actual doghouse, complete with trash cans that look like fire hydrants. They have a walk-up window & a drive-thru, no speaker in the drive-thru, you speak to the person at the window & they write down your order. Everything on the menu pretty much has a canine related title, I had a "Bull Dog" & a "German Shepherd" on my visit along with a regular order of fries. The hot dogs were very good, they use the red type dogs & the buns are steamed & super soft. The BullDog has mustard, slaw, chili & onions, a very nice hot dog, the onions not too strong, the chili was just tad on the bland side, needed just a pinch of salt, but was really good. The German Shepherd was pretty simple, it just has spicy mustard & sauerkraut, very good also. The fries are the little crinkle cut type, the were perfectly cooked, crispy golden brown, but they were unsalted, which is the reason I deducted a star. Isn't it against the law to not salt fries when they come out of the oil?...maybe not, but it should be. Luckily they threw a couple packs of salt in the bag & I mixed some in the ketchup, I'm rarely in the neighborhood here, but next time I'm close by, I'll definitely swing by The Doghouse for a nice dawg. read more

I was disappointed by the Dog House. The service was sub par and the hot dogs themselves were unimpressive. While in Hillsborough, I was looking for a lunch and trying to skip over all of the chains. I saw this local place as I was driving by and it looked interesting. The Dog House is a cool concept. The building is literally shaped like a dog house and they have taken that theme and ran with it. All of the hot dogs are named after breeds of dogs or famous dogs. You can either hit the drive thru or you can walk up and order. If you decide to walk up and want a place to sit, there is a picnic table in the adjacent parking lot behind the line of bushes. I decided to try two different dogs and went with the "Bull-Dog" which had mustard, slaw, onions, and chili & the "Ol' Yallow" which had mustard, melted cheese, and bacon bits. Both dogs were just kind of mushy and the buns that they came on were soft and squashed together. The dogs were of the red variety and seemed to be boiled. The chili was bland and the cheese that was included on the "Ol' Yallow" was just nacho cheese drizzled on top. The hot dogs were just not good. I also am not a huge fan of the service. I went back up to ask for a refill on my tea and was rudely told that they didn't do refills. I understand that some places don't do refills, but it could have been handled better. Also sweet tea costs absolutely nothing to make. Anyways, just not the nicest workers. I would skip over the Dog House next time I'm in Hillsborough. A place that pretty much only does one thing should be really good at that one thing. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. read more

This little dog house shaped drive-thru sits in the strip center beside the old Daniel Boone center. It looked interesting so I thought I would give it shot over the other chain options nearby. Kinda wish I had went with a waffle and some smothered, covered and chunked hashbrowns. I tried the German Shepard which was kraut with spicy mustard, and the Chihuahua which was pico de gallo and chili. Their wieners were limp and mushy, but not nearly as mushy as the buns which had been steamed to the point of falling apart. Granted I prefer my buns nice and toasty, but I don't mind a bun that's a bit mushy from being steamed well. I also like my wiener to have some snap to it and be nice and firm, not mushy. I just don't dig having to pull over and eat a hot dog with a fork. The chili was pretty dull and flavorless to me and the kraut was too. Good spicy mustard at least make the German dog edible. The pico on the Chihuahua was really funky tasting, so i would up taking it and the chili off with a napkin and scrounging up some ketchup packets to use instead. Not really what you want to do to a $2.00 hotdog. Also got an order of fries that were pretty bad too. Frozen bagged krinkle cut fries that were undercooked and under-salted. Doubtful that I would I stop here again, I think the Fitty-cent hot dogs at Sheetz are better than this place. read more

Some days, I just get a craving for a hot dog, and these are about just as good as it gets! I always order 2 bull dogs (hot dog with chili, slaw, and onion) with no mustard and a side of fries. They have crinkle cut fries that have a delicious texture and aren't too salty. The chili isn't spicy but it adds that extra deliciousness that is required in a hot dog topping. It kind of overpowers the slaw though, so I kind of just keep the slaw on for texture/crunch. When I purchase hot dogs at the grocery store, I always buy the 100% beef ones. Not because I'm picky, but because ever since I tried those, I can't go back. Unless it's a Dog House hot dog, they are delicious. The fries are great, but the large fry to small fry comparison isn't a huge difference, so you may want to order 2 or so to get enough for the fries-to-hotdog ratio (assuming you ordered 2). The staff is also always incredibly nice. They are closed on Sundays, so if you get a craving, you're going to have to go somewhere else. read more

My first experience with the Dog House was when I was 7 years old. My dad took me there and I got a "Puppy" Dog(plain hot dog on a bun). Flash Forward 24 years later and I still enjoy going to the Dog House and getting the "Bulldog"(mustard, chili, slaw, onions) with fries and Iced tea. And if that doesn't fill me up, throw in some baked beans and a warm apple turnover. If you want a spicy dog, get the Chihuahua. There's just something special about this place that keeps me coming back to it from the cool building design, to the warm greetings from the servers. The only downside is they don't have any seating so you either have to take it home, or tailgate in the parking lot. read more

I tried out The Dog House for the first time today. I ordered the "Bulldog" and "Sausage Dog." The "Bulldog" had spicy mustard, onions, chili and slaw. The hotdog was good. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but certainly not the worst either. I liked the dog itself. it was pretty substantial as far as hot dogs go, not a skinny shriveled up wiener, but plump and juicy. I wouldn't hesitate to stop in for another if I craved a hot dog and was in the area. I work nearby, so I'll probably order here again. I doubt if I'd order another sausage dog though. I expected something along the lines of a brat, but it was a skinny sausage and fairly dense and firm - not what I was expecting or typically like. Overall, it was a decent lunch. read more
