I'm a 23-year-old woman currently struggling with disabling, undiagnosed symptoms that have drastically impacted my ability to function day to day. These include joint and muscle pain, extreme fatigue, weakness, chest tightness, breathing discomfort, and a positive ANA (1:80, dense fine speckled pattern). I've gone to the ER due to how intense things have gotten, and I was referred to Dr. Lily Kao by my primary care doctor in hopes of getting support and long-term monitoring, even if a clear diagnosis wasn't immediately available. Unfortunately, both of my visits with Dr. Kao were incredibly discouraging. From the very beginning, she would cut me off mid-sentence while I was trying to explain or list my symptoms. I tried to communicate that my symptoms are constant but fluctuate in intensity. That's even if they don't all show up in lab work, they are very real and disruptive to my daily life. Still, she told me that because my bloodwork didn't clearly point to a specific autoimmune disease, there was nothing she could do. I asked if she could at least monitor me over time in case symptoms progressed -- something many autoimmune patients need -- but she said no and told me to go back to my primary care physician. She also told me that my positive ANA "doesn't mean anything" and that "normal people have it too." The way she said this came across as extremely condescending, especially considering that I do have significant symptoms, which is why I was referred in the first place. I tried to explain that I'm aware ANA is a general test, but that my symptoms are what make it relevant. My primary care physician told me that themselves, which is why I even got referred. She then backtracked, saying she wasn't trying to say I had "nothing", but by that point, it was clear how little she was listening or trying to understand. If you're a doctor, you should know how to communicate without dismissing or belittling your patient. I'm still new to all of this -- navigating a potential autoimmune illness, learning as I go, pushing through constant physical pain and fatigue, and trying to advocate for myself in a system that often doesn't take young women seriously. I wasn't expecting a diagnosis on the spot, just compassion and patience as I navigate through the unknown. Instead, I left feeling invalidated and hopeless. Luckily, I still have a lot of strength and support to not give up. I wish that were the case for everyone though. If you are someone dealing with early autoimmune symptoms, chronic illness, or unexplained fatigue and pain that don't fit neatly into a diagnosis yet -- I would not recommend seeing Dr. Kao. Look for a doctor who will actually listen, ask thoughtful questions, and treat you like a person, not just a lab report. read more

I'm really surprised by the other reviews. I've been seeing Dr Kao for the past several years and have never had a bad experience with her or her staff. Everyone in the office both on the phone and in person have been very nice and professional. We have never had to wait very long in the waiting room or exam room for my appointment and have always felt like our questions have been answered about my condition. Dr Kao has always been kind and patient with our questions answering everything clearly. She has helped to treat my inflammatory disease and truly helped me to be able to function enough to live a relatively normal life. Thank you Dr Kao! read more

The issuer really don't with the Dr. It's the office "manager" John. Rude and very unprofessional. I had issues with billing and tried ringer it resolved. When I asked why are so rude when you are speaking to me "HE" decided to terminate my car with Dr Kao during the phone conversation. I never had a chance to speak with Dr Kao at all about the situation. Quite frankly Jon is a pompous ass with no real people skills. I've worked in the medical office field AND in management, and I'm surprised this guy has a job dealing with the public. I do sincerely appreciate Dr Kao for diagnosing my issue when there had many issues as to what it would be. Do yourself a favor Dr Kao and hire a proper manager who's knows a thing or two when dealing with the public. Especially when it comes to healthcare. read more

When I was referred to Dr Lily Kao, I checked the Google review which was 2.3/5. I also read each one of the review. I was so hoping that I could help drive up the rating after I saw Dr. Kao. I simply cannot. I have seen Dr Kao twice, each time she came in and out of the meeting room like a breeze of wind. When I'm suffering from all kinds pain from inflammation, when I am the one who had to deal with the side effect of all kinds of medicine, I'd really appreciate the doctor does not just order bunch of more and more tests and run away after spending only five minutes with me. She did not give me any time to take in the information of my disease and feel better of the uncertainty of treatment with a new medicine. She even shut me up when I shared additional symptoms such as shooting pain on my left side of head! I am giving one star to the office manager John who had the patience to talk to me after Dr Kao dashed out of the door. Otherwise, as a specialist doctor, Dr Kao deserves a zero star. Dr Kao is a perfect example of why medical professionals need to pass certain level of social and emotional intelligence required to provide care to their patients. My mom was referred to Dr Kao by her PCP for her hands that got swollen red and painful over the winter. Dr Kao had blood tests done for my mom, 10+ tubes, when I asked her what the tests were, she said to find out if there were "anything else" going on. She could have explained in layman's terms what she was looking for in the tests. Any caring professional should know how important information is for patients to make informed decisions, to help relieve anxiety, to feel that they are cared for. I had to ask the phlebotomist to show me the test orders. When we came back for return visit, Dr Kao was visibly upset when she found out my mom didn't want to see the dermatologist because the skin on her hands have healed. When I asked her about the tests, she said everything was negative, but clearly one of her tests, ANA test came back positive, but Dr Kao did not address this, even if it was not concerning for her, she could have spent time talking to us about what it meant. This was clearly NEGLIGENCE on her part. She spent literally 2 minutes with us in the room and left. Medical professionals like Dr Kao are barriers to access to care, especially for minority population like my mom who is elderly, non-English speaking. Dr Kao needs to be held accountable for her social and emotional inadequacy. I got referred to Dr Kao by looking at available Hand doctors around. My hand has been ultimately swollen for awhile. My appointment was at 3pm and I had it on my calendar but I forgot to change the reminder to an hour prior as i live far but i called and they said will still see me if i come before 4:30pm which i thought o cool!! i was willing to reschedule but they said it was okay. So i get there and i checked in which is fine. They walked me into the room and asked me to undress and gave me surgery drape kind of thing to have it on where it shows the back. I asked her why do i need to wear this and undress if she is just viewing my hand. She said o its common most doctors like to review everything. i thought that was weird. But I did not get undressed i just took off my jacket and put the drape thing over me. The doctor walks in and she did not ask why i was not undress so i thought hmm i would of gotten undress for no reason then! How annoying! She was rushing the whole time! she did an ultrasound on my hand and said o i have some tendons that looks a little swollen. Then she said o i had an option to do a steriod shot but she said that it was optional and I was saying yes i wanted it but the she says i didnt need it! And said no pills will help. okay why else did i come there??! umm to get help?! she offered me no recommendations or solutions. I wanted to talk to her more but she opened the door and i was trying to ask her a question and she answers me with her body half way through the door. I mean i understand i was late but your reception told me i could still be seen if i came before 430pm which i did! if me being late causes an issue please reschedule it so i can chat more with the doctor. I ultimately think she just wanted to charge my insurance for a 5 minute session that was given to me. She was not personable at all. not happy and i came home with swollen hand still with no solution. wont b back even for the steriod shot. read more

Dr Kao was by far the rudest Doctor I have ever seen. My wife had a shoulder issue and she would not listen to our questions and kept interrupting us when we tried to talk to her. I can see why she is rated a 2-3. I wanted to ask her one question about my shoulder to see if she felt I need to make a appointment and she wouldn't listen to my question and said" go to the front counter to make an appointment ".Well that didn't happen. She also kicked my granddaughter and I out of the room. I then went to the front lobby and asked the supervisor, Vivina Silva's to get my wife before the Doctor touches her and she didn't get her. I tried to go to the room and they wouldn't let me saying she's the patient not me. Another rude and non listening person was Jon Kishl whom I also told him the same thing and he wouldn't let me talk to my wife as well and wouldn't get her so I can talk to her in the lobby.He ended up kicking my granddaughter and I out of the office, threatening to call the police to do so. The rest of the staff there were professional and kind the Doctor, Kao, Vivina Silva and Jon Kuching deserve zero ratings, but they don't have a zero. read more

Dr. Kao is cold, rushing, rude. Honestly I went for 1 visit and was rubbed the wrong way the entire time. And telling me I need to be on pills the next 60+ years of my life after TEN MINUTES with me was the last straw. So at the end of the appointment she tells me I am free to get a second opinion. I call the office to get the referral for Stanford and her office tells me to F* off - that they'll never give me the referral. Meanwhile stanford says I have to have the referral to get the appt there -- so THANKS FOR NOTHING! I knew I hated this office from the minute I walked in. read more

How can she correctly diagnose a patient if she's rushing to get to the next patient with one foot out of the door already? It's hard to miss seeing her roll her eyes and shake her head while typing in her dinosaur computer when we are sitting right there. Dr. Kao is very rude, unfriendly, and dismissive to my questions. She literally saw me for 8 minutes. That was it! She didn't let me talk and rushed me out so quickly. She was very rude the way she talked to me. She didn't show any compassion for a patient who was suffering. I left her office crying because I felt badly treated. She doesn't deserve the title of "Doctor". I referred to her in the first sentence as "doctor" so people know who I'm talking about but she really is not deserving of that title. Today was such a disappointing day for me I left work early and paid a $50 copay for my doctor to be in a rush and to be sassy and treat me in a very unprofessional way I am so disappointed I walked out of there feeling like I was in more pain than I first walked in for the fact that she did not have much to say or do for me I practically was begging her for help she wants me to take time off from work but she won't give me no options of how I could get by financially I don't understand how you going to tell somebody if you want to get better take time off work just like that and then tell you that you have to choose whether you want to get better or not it's up to you I want to get better but I can't just stop what I'm doing and it's depend on my husband to support me financially by the snap of a finger because she says take time off work lady gave give me options give me some help here I pay you $50 for every time I see you that's not including with my insurance pays you very disappointed in her very upset if I can't get Social Security or disability how you going to tell me to take time off work and support myself and not create hardship for myself read more

Dr Kao is so smart! I couldn't believe how laser-like her mind was in spotting my problem and relieving so much fear! The office staff seems normal, they're definitely not the kind of place that makes you feel special. Some people want to feel special. I just need a good doctor. read more

Dr. Kao is a professional rheumatologist whom keeps a tight schedule. I Loved how I could get in and out of the office in a timely manner. During a flame up with my rheumatoid arthritis I was told by the Dr. to not hesitate to come in for an injection in between appointments. We were still having to change the biologic injection I was on to control my flare. Six to eight weeks earlier my prescription cover had changed not my medical insurance. I was able to seen at all my visits till I asked for a wheel chair and or an electric chair to aid me in taking care and keeping up with my two children. My problem then and still had nothing to do with the Dr. herself. It started with the staff mainly the office Manager John. Very unprofessional and rude when discussing issues. I was to have an injection in office of a new biologic and because I didn't have information he needed even tho I was told the day before that my insurance was active to drive the 25 miles to the office. I was rudely spoken to and no options to resolve the problem were given. (As a manager of an office you would think that's their job) I was told there was nothing at all that they could do for me! I'm 38 with rheumatoid arthritis for 34 years in the middle of a flare. Later that day I put in for a new dr. By that night I could barely walk or move my arms I struggled for two weeks trying to get the info. That was needed. My mom sent a message to the Dr. on Friday asked to mark urgent. Never got a response. The office called for an appointment the next week I then was able to give insurance info. Only to be told that's not what's needed!! Only coverage I have! So hands down don't use this office I've never been put through anything like this in my life and I've been through a lot! WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HUMAN KINDNESS???? By the way I had several injections at this office previously after my insurance change and it was all covered. read more
