As a U.S. military veteran, I've dealt with my fair share of tough situations, but nothing prepared me for the blatant price gouging I experienced with this towing company. My car was held for just one week, and they charged me $1,900 -- yes, you read that right. No clear breakdown, no explanation that made sense -- just an inflated bill and a rude attitude when I questioned it. They showed zero respect or empathy, even after I explained I was a veteran just trying to get my vehicle back. This company is clearly preying on people when they're most vulnerable. Bethman's takes a personal interest in your vehicle. Our daughters jeep was running rough, needed new brakes and a transmission oil change. The engine was running rough for us intermittently. And I didn't want our daughter driving back to college with an undependable car. Vince and the crew at Bethman's searched for the issue several times but as luck would have it, the engine ran fine when they test drove it. After I picked it up, the engine acted up again so we drove it straight back to Bethman's and Vince was able to get the code for a bad block sensor, ordered the part and fixed the issue. We just got an oil change done today. Service was very fast. We walked in at about 1030am and it was ready in no time. I love the convenience of having service done at a place so close to home and of course, they always do a nice job. Also, the price was perfect too, just about what we got charged at Valvoline when we last had it done. Reputable service, quick turnaround and no hassles. Good auto repair shop! Absolute price gouging in the middle of a pandemic when people are unemployed but try to help local businesses. My car got towed here and they charged $185 tow (less than 5 miles), $110 in fees, three "calendar" days of storage despite them being closed and unavailable to pick up on the weekends. All told almost $500. Now I knew it wasn't going to be free (or even cheap), but it is obvious they know they can charge an arm and a leg because there is nothing you can do about it. We are all trying to do our part and help out local businesses during the trouble we're in, but do they return the respect to the customer? These people do not deserve your money if you have the choice, because they will just rip off the people that were forced to tow with them. read more

I had an out of state guest who blew out his tire. He had a nice little Mercedes with no spare. I stopped by the shop since it was a block away. The gentleman assured me it was no problem to order the replacement tire and have it all completed within 2 hours. My guest needed to leave the same day. Very very rude. very expensive. I asked him for a price on a simple 3 month service. He insisted that he check the car out before giving me a price. He completed service without giving me a price. and ended up charging over $50 for a simple oil change!!! He CONNED me out of my money. and was very rude about it. I never gave him my billing information, he went in my glove compartment behind my back without my permission and took my insurance info down.... never take your business here. read more

These crooks held my car for two weeks and not only did they not fix it, they switched my brand new tires that I got had just gotten 6 months ago, with cheap used tires! If you are looking for a car repair center with quality customer service and a fierce attention to detail, you will be sorely disappointed if you visited Newtown's Lin Bethman's Auto --- this is based on my own personal experience. Frankly I was surprised. But lesson learned... if this company promises that they will do something, best GET IT IN WRITING. The owner conveniently forgot he promised me one thing a few months back and basically told me to take my business elsewhere when I was asking to reconcile what was promised. There are a few other solid options in Newtown that I would suggest you consider. THEY DEFINITELY ROBBED ME! !! I wanted my truck towed 6 miles to my house one afternoon because my wife hit a park sign and the front end was damaged (some of the antifreeze leaked out into the grass, the bumper was bent bad the grill was smashed and the hood was crunched up)., instead they took it to their shop because (actual quote) "I'm too busy right now, I'll do it tomorrow" . The next morning I called, he said the charge is $450. ($100 for the tow, $350 for the other stuff) the other stuff means: $90 for the storage (less than 24 hours) $40 to winch the truck onto his flatbed, (my truck is drive able except the air dam would drag on the ground and was leaking antifreeze) $45 for clean-up (picked up some small pieces of plastic from the grass) and $175 for Labor. (5 to 10 minutes putting my truck on his flatbed, 5 seconds picking little pieces of plastic, 20 minute drive to my house the next day, then putting it in my driveway) I had to pay $450 for everything before they towed it to my house. The tow truck driver is dangerous! Please don't support this company that does not care about the children of Newtown. While I was waiting at a busy intersection to make a left turn, the well marked, flatbed tow truck pulled around me on the right side and made the left turn. It was his lucky day that I didn't have him arrested for nearly killing my children. read more

I have used Bethmans multiple times since moving back to the newtown area in late 2015 and have to comment on this business and the men who take care of it. As a single mom on a limited budget it is scary to figure out where to go and whom to trust with such expenses and all the service i have received from the guys at bethmans continue to reinforce my confidence. I have had brake service, oil change, headlight change, and most recently towing service from the allentown rest stop on the northeast extension of the turnpike (after breaking down with 4 kids and my dog in the car) and the issue of the airline fixed all within a reasonable price, i trust jeff and the guys too take care of exactly what needs to be taken care of. I will continue to use them and will continue to recommend bethmans as a service center with values and integrity. read more

I saw a neighbor's beautiful shiny car. I knew it was an older model. I asked him how he kept it looking so good. He said Lin Bethman's Auto Center detailed it for him. So I went there with my 20 year old Corolla. Looked like new when I got it back. Price seemed reasonable. They also gave me car service from and to my home. Owner is extremely rude, but most of the workers seem to be very polite & considerate to customers, which is truly a shame. This gives a bad impression of the business overall. He gives no consideration to customer's inputs or considerations when working on their vehicles. I've used Bethman's several times for work on my Lexus LS430. I wouldn't trust just anyone with it. His credentials are impressive. Jeff has done some complex repairs competently -- he gets it right. His prices are fair and less than what a dealer would charge. Moreover, he is personable and approachable. He clearly loves cars and it shows in his work. You really may want to make sure that the person you cut off while running a stop sign in your shop's tow truck isn't one of your customers.

Just talked with Jeff as to how much it would cost to tow my car approximately 10 miles after an accident. He told me at $150. I asked him why he charged a friend of mine Tim who is a quadriplegic and in a wheelchair $450. He told me he returned $90 of the $450 to Tim. Towing $100 , labor $175, winching $40, clean up $45, overnight storage $90. Instead of Towing it to Tim's house he said he was too busy so we stored it for 2 days for Tim. Tim lives approximately 6 miles from where the accident took place. So the way I look at it if you are handicapped you do not want to use this service. Also if you know someone who is handicapped and know what they do with their struggles everyday you would not want to use this service. I'm sure your father will not be happy with the way you have treated Tim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Overall, you could do far worse than Bethman's in the Wild West of auto repair. The mechanic I've dealt with, John, is talented and pleasant. Their rates are about average for a shop of this type--don't expect any especially great deals, but it's a lot cheaper than a dealer. And I think they are honest. They're not going to do work that's not needed. I've spent a few grand there. My primary gripe is that the owner, Jeff, acts like he just doesn't care whether you use his shop. I get the impression that business is boring to him, and that he'd rather be doing something else. Perhaps he's just unusually low-key. Whatever. I'd give this place 3.5 stars, or a solid B. I'm rounding up to a 4 because that's just how I am. The previous reviewer's one-star rating seems unfair, and it's not at all representative of my extensive experience there. read more
