I received several years of great care from the Physicians Assistant (Rick), Dr. Kates never examined me. After Rick left the practice, I had follow-up routine examinations which were covered by my insurance but noticed charges to my credit card for procedures that I was unaware would be billable. PA Brown is awesome. So thoughtful, thorough and patient answering my questions. He always gives you a range of solutions and let's you decide how important the issue is to you before sending you to major surgery or expensive treatments (which I haven't done.). He finally helped my clear up my acne with a magical combination that I wish hadn't taken me 15 years to figure out. Everyone is kind, courteous and helpful. Most of these bad reviews have to do with billing and administrative issues, so don't read into the overall average. If you're looking for a good doctor, make an appointment. It's worth it. So I usually don't write reviews but I figured I would give my experience. Made appt for my daughter. She was seen by the PA, not the doc. I had insurance plus paid 150$ for them to tell her to was with 2 store products. Her followup was scheduled the first day of school so I called to cancel it. Person said ok and have a nice day. No mention of a canx fee because I only called 24 hours in advance. I got a confirmation email later in the day so I called again to verify it was cancelled. So yes it was cancelled, for a 50$ fee. I get they are a business, but i don't feel like my daughter got anything out of it. For her to say she wasn't interested in going back, that's pretty big. Do i want to reschedule? Staff were great & office was clean. I have skin lupus & been on same medicine since original diagnosis 2015 fm a well-respected dr in area who retired. I met w/Dr. Kate's PA Nov 2021. He review my past records & current skin situation then refilled my prescription. Sadly, he left her practice. Since PA left her practice, I had to set up an appt (only 3mths later) to receive a refill; which I did. I took her earliest available appt which left me 11 days without my medicine. I called her medical asst & let them know the situation. They asked Dr. Kates & she would not refill till I saw her. But she had no earlier appt. Without my meds, I break out with dime size itchy bumps all over my skin. Dr Kate's didn't call to discuss my days w/out my medicine. I called my family doctor who sent in a 1 mth (since derm dr take care of this med). Dr Kate's lacks concern & empathy. I've never been treated like this before. These horrible reviews are nuts! First of all, the people at the front desk are quite friendly and professional. They greet me by name, ask how I am, and have helped me pick out face wash and sunscreen. However, there has never been any pressure to buy Dr. Kates' products. I decided on my own that I would buy the face wash she makes after loving the sample I got at a facial with Jamie. I work 3 jobs and I definitely haven't had issues with getting appointments. I can get 4:00 appointments with ease. By all means, if you expect a dermatologist and esthetician to work weekends or evenings, prepare to be disappointed. And I definitely wouldn't recommend a chemical peel if you have sensitive skin. Duh. You shouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. I was asked lots of questions about my skin before Jamie helped me pick out what kind of facial would be best for me, so it's not like they don't do their due diligence to ensure that the type of facial you get is the right fit. She also looked over my chart and talked about the products and medications I was currently using. Dr. Kates is exceptionally knowledgeable and patient. They are pretty punctual. They see a lot of patients, so sometimes you can end up waiting a few minutes, but I imagine that's more a reflection of certain patients asking a lot of questions or raising unanticipated concerns etc than the office itself. They don't double book or overfill their schedule. I've been seen pretty quickly in all the many times I've gone. I've never had any sort of billing issue. When I first went to Dr. Kates' office, I had horrific cystic acne that had appeared out of thin air and was ruining my 20s. She listened to me (I am against taking antibiotics because I don't want them to become ineffective from unnecessary extended use) and worked with me to create a strategy to clear up my skin. My skin is great now. It looks so much better. Dr. Kates has even personally called me when I've had an issue with an Rx dose. They do a good job following up and making sure you're taken care of and feeling your best. The face wash that Dr. Kates makes/sells (but has never mentioned to me or pushed me to buy mind you) is wonderful. It's called benzyfoam if anyone's wondering. That along with Rx pills and face cream has really made a world of difference. I have had nothing but positive experiences with everyone I've seen at Dr. Kates, including Jamie for a facial, the secretaries, many different medical assistants, and of course Dr. Kates herself. The waiting room has a good amount of comfortable seating and they don't have any annoying music in there either. Finally, the office complex has ample parking and you won't have too far to walk. The location is easy to find too even for the directionally challenged like me. I come all the way from the Eastern Shore to go here. I highly recommend Dr. Kates and her staff to care for all of your skincare needs. read more

Dr Kates and the PA Mr Brown seem pretty competent, however getting involved with this practice's finance office is like borrowing money from a loan shark. Before we'd even received a final statement from Blue Cross, Dr Kates' office charged us a $10 finance charge. And since that bill came when we were on vacation, we missed it and were hit with another $10 finance charge within weeks. So far, $20 in finance charges for a $26 bill. Hmmm... No matter how competent the doctors may be, the finance office is vicious and avaricious. AND, they just tacked on another $2.39 for a bill dating from 2011! Blue Cross apparently has trouble contracting dermatologists. read more

I absolutely HATE this dermatology office. I've only been 3 or 4 times over the past few years when I needed more immediate treatment for my hormonal acne and every time I come here I regret it! The entire staff is rude and whoever answers their phone is completely clueless! I called because I was having a strange reaction to one of the treatments I got done here and she assured me someone would call me back by the end of the day. No one called. I called back the next day and she promised me someone would call me back by the end of the day, no one called. Someone eventually called me 4 days after my initial call which at that point I no longer needed their help. I called their office today because my pharmacy told me the doctor was not responding to approve a refill for a medication they prescribed me. (I have to take this medication at least 6 weeks to see results and I am currently at 4 weeks) The clueless woman who answers the phone once again assured me someone would call me back and of course no one did. Now the office is closed for the weekend so I have no way of getting in contact with them and the prescription I was taking this past month is now completely pointless because I won't be able to take it for the next 3 days! This office is very quick to take your money but does not even want to provide basic service/consideration for their patients! Please do not waste your time here. read more

BEWARE- One day I showed up for an appointment and was told I had a no show fee for an appointment I cancelled. The fee was $35- I had cancelled the appointment and was trying to convey that message to the staff. I walked out of the office after an attitude from the staff. This was months ago. I continue to get a bill with $10 added on every month. I have called this office every month to dispute the charges and no one seems to care. I have also documented every conversation and took notes on every bill and sent it to the office, again no one calls me back or seems to care. EXTREMELY predatory practices. read more

This office is only concerned with money! I received my bill, paid it in FULL in 22 days. They sent out a 2nd bill only 10 days after the first bill, with a FINANCE CHARGE of $10. I have NEVER had a doctor bill like this in my life. I paid the bill within 30 days, and here they send out a 2nd bill so quicky and with an additional fee??? They don't even give you time to look over your EOB to compare and make sure everything is ok. I will never go back there again. Greedy. That is how I describe this service. Who bills this way? WOW - what a change. I decided to bring my son here to get some warts removed and after 10 appts (getting him out of school, missing work, driving to the office) where all they put on them was "beetle juice" the doc gave up and gave me some to take home. The warts never went away. Each appt was less then 5 mins. But I hadn't gotten a bill so I figured they were doing it as a courtesy after paying for the first time. Its now a year later and I get a bill every other month for $25. They were charging $155 to my insurance for this! I took my son to his pediatrician and he told me to get some compound W and use it. I bought a groupon for a microderm. I called to make an appointment and turns out the Esthetician only works Monday through Thursday 10-3. and closed on weekends. So unless your a housewife or have time off work dont plan to make an appointment. The phone manners of the front desk were not all that great as well. I paid in advance for services to be done by Dr. Kates. Because of a medical condition I was unable to have the services done. I called Dr. Kates office on October 4, 2017 to inform them I was unable to have the services done. I spoke to the Office Manager. I was told I could not have my $500.00 back. I had to find another service to be done. "We don't give refunds". The Office Manager told me she would talk to Dr. Kates about the $500.00 refund.. The Office Manager never called me back. I called again on October 10, 2017. I was told Dr. Kates is out of the office for a week. She would speak to Dr. Kates upon her return and call me back. No return call. I called again on November1, 2017 and spoke to the receptionist and left a message for the Office Manager. No return call. I called again in December ( I have to find the exact date) and spoke to the Office Manager. I was told she would call me back. Again no return call. I signed no paper work stating if you pay in advance and cannot have services done you would not be given your money back. I cannot afford to lose $500.00. Do NOT get any services here or buy any products!! The office cancelled my first appointment 2 hours prior when I had already taken off work. When I did reschedule, I purchased some skin care products. I used the sample lotion prior to opening the products and had some breakouts. I attempted to return the unopened /sealed package and they have a no refund or exchange policy on products. Ridiculous!! I have returned opened products to another office when I had an irritation without any issues. They are extremely overpriced and you can get any product cheaper anywhere else. If I could give 0 stars I would. We had 2 visits to remove 3 warts. Each visit lasted less than 10 minutes and I spent more time filling out their intrusive financial paperwork than with the PA Mr. Brown. I was extremely surprised when I discovered they had charged us $588 for these 2 visits, our bill was for $213 after insurance adj and payment. What a complete RIPOFF! The bill also had an additional $20 late fee, even though it was our first bill received. I paid the bill minus the $20 late fee. I have received a bill each month since with an additional $10 late fee attached (now upto $50). I almost walked out of their office when I was filling out the paperwork because I felt it was unbelievable intrusive and I was being asked to fill out more financial paperwork than patient history paperwork. Now I wish I had walked out! I will not walk into their office ever again! It is clear by every action this practice has taken their primary motive is to charge inexorbinant fees to their patients and then engage in vicious billing practices. read more
