We just moved to this small town of Narberth. "Downtown" Narberth is not really a downtown. It's essentially a couple of blocks with a few bars, a few restaurants, a few stores and a Septa station. Le Petit Mitron is completely out of place in this little town. You could transport this place into any big city in the U.S. and it would be able to compete with places like Sprinkles and Crumbs. The pastries and sweets are unbelievable. I'm not sure if Narberth is a destination for anyone who does not live here, but this place makes it worth the trip. Absolutely marvelous. As I'm writing this, I'm wondering why I don't wander down to Le Petit Mitron more frequently. My wallet is grateful that I don't, but my belly is heartbroken. Everything everyone is saying is true. It's a perfect little french bakery. Not much seating, just a couple uncomfortable benches inside and a couple tables on the sidewalk in the summer. This place really does things right. There are no bloated buns piped with whipped cream filling and called eclairs. If there truly is a mitron back there doing the work, he should get bumped to maitre. And as a bonus, you can buy Kinder products here. This is a huge relief for our kids. The only bad thing about the place is that it closes in August. I can honestly say that the chocolate croissants (pain au chocolat) are as good as any you will find in Paris. Their Opera cake is sublime, and the raspberry cookies are delightful. Came here a while back to pick up some tasties for my hubby and me. I purchased three croissants: plain, almond, and chocolate, and a fruit tart. These were hands-down the best croissants I've ever eaten in the States, and better than many in Europe. The fruit tart was also delicious but being honest I've had better at Wegmans--sorry! (To be fair, Wegmans' pastries are also better than most.) The staff are friendly and the store is bright and clean. It is very quaint and does make you feel a little like you are in a European bakery. My only complaint is that things seem to be displayed somewhat precariously--I'm always a little concerned I am going to knock something over. (But I haven't!) In addition to pastries they sell various chocolates, hot beverages, and a small selection of Haribo. So if you need to satisfy a craving for European sweets, you'll probably be able to do that here. I used to love this place until today when I had the worst customer experience. There were five people working in the store. Three customers were undecided about what they wanted so I walked up to the cash register as I knew what I wanted. The owner said to me I had to wait until the other customers were done, to wait until it was my turn, and to get in the back of the line. I was flabbergasted. Two employees were just standing there. The owner was putting a tray of cakes away and at the least could have said "i'll be right with you." They've lost my business. read more

This place has been a staple for my family for two decades and serves up French baked goods whose caliber isn't met elsewhere on the mainline. I didn't even like almonds when a regular convinced me to try their almond croissant and I've never looked back (except when it's out of stock which does happen if you arrive after the morning rush). That being said, their chocolate croissant and beignets are hard to bypass and never has one of their other individual pastries or baguettes disappointed. Their Royal cake is by far the star of the show and has served as my family's Valentine's Day cake (and my milestone birthday cakes) which we look forward to every year. If you like chocolate and praline and have a special occasion approaching, it is divine, and like most French baking, not easily replicated at home. While the coffee isn't out of this world, it pairs so nicely with whatever else you're getting. Probably the only downside to this French getaway tucked away in the main street of Narberth is that it shuts down for an indefinite period of time in August and September. As a heads up, you do need to spend $10 to use a credit card or there is a fee but, since the prices aren't exactly cheap and everything on their shelves is tempting, that's not a hard feat. read more

The other day I was sitting in the Headnut in Ardmore having a cup of coffee when a guy and his daughter sat down next to me. We started a conversation and discovered that we have a lot in common. I told him that I wrote reviews on Yelp and our subject switched to surprise- food. He told me about his favorite bakery located in Narberth. He said that they have the best French pastries in the area. So you know where this is going. After I had my coffee, I immediately set out for Le Petit Mitron to try the chocolate croissants that he was raving about. The bakery was located in beautiful downtown Narberth which is a cutie, quaint little shopping area with a main street vibe. I was tickled because I had never known this some what hidden enclave existed. Parked on the street and put a case quarter in the parking meter and it gave me a whole hour! If you ever parked in Philly and received a few minutes for the same quarter, you know how I felt. When I entered Le Petit Mitron, the aroma surrounded me and I was hooked. The bakery cases were filled with pies, cakes, pastries breads and cookies and 2 motherly type ladies gently packing bags with all the goodies. I asked for a pear tart and a chocolate croissant and a cup of La Colombe coffee. The pear tart was delicious with a buttery, crispy crust and the fruity filling was like velvet but not overly sweet. The star of the show was the chocolate croissant, flaky, buttery, with a slightly crisp outer layer and filled with rich dark chocolate. It was magnificent. Took all the strength I had to not go back and order a dozen to go. Instead I chilled. So whenever I go to that area to get a cigar, I have one more stop to make. read more

Le Petit Mitron is like a little, Parisian piece of heaven right here in Pennsylvania. I recently moved to the Main Line, and a trip to this French patisserie was at the top of my list of things to do once I moved in. The exterior of this store is charming, with hand-painted windows, a chalkboard sign outside with specials on it, and a few bistro sets for patrons who wish to enjoy their goodies outside. Once inside, the place is even more charming. When I first walked in, I was greeted with the most incredible display case of French goodies I've ever seen. They have several different kinds of cakes, fruit tarts, cookies, croissants (regular, cheese, and chocolate), baguettes, mini quiche, madeleines, European chocolate, and the list goes on and on. They also serve coffee, tea, and lattes. I was paralyzed at first because I couldn't decide what to order; everything looked so good, like out of a French movie or something! At last, I decided to order a chocolate croissant, which the owner served me with a smile. I paid and stepped out into the warm autumn morning to catch the train across the street. Once I settled into my seat on the train, I opened my precious parcel and took a bite of my croissant. It was seriously the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. The outside was flaky and buttery, the inside was smooth and contained a chocolate of perfect bittersweetness. I let the croissant melt in my mouth as I savored every morsel. At that point, the train could have crashed and i wouldn't cared because I had just experienced the most perfect bite of food in my life. After that, I kept going back, so that now Le Petit Mitron is one of the guilty pleasures I indulge in often. In addition to amazing croissants (the regular and cheese versions are also extremely good), I also enjoy their mini quiches, lemon cookies, and madeleines. For my boyfriend's birthday, I ordered a raspberry cake, and it was scrumptious! The coffee is also very tasty. In short, this place has it all: atmosphere, friendly staff, and incredible food. Every time I pass by the Main Line, I make sure to stop by a pick up something: a croissant, a baguette, an almadine with raspberries (which was a big hit at the NYE party I attended), a slice of opera cake.... yum. I think I am the only person in the world who finds this place highly overrated. The selection is fairly meager, the prices are outlandish and, while I've had some good items from there (the croissants are fabulous), many of the items I've tried have been dry and on the tasteless side. A few have been cloyingly sweet but not particularly flavorful otherwise. My husband picked up a chocolate cake for my birthday there a few years ago that I am fairly certain was at least a day or two old and did not taste good at all. It's not that it's a bad bakery. It is not bad at all. It's just that it is not really exceptional in any way and the prices are just insane. I like to stop in here and get a real croissant even though they are insanely expensive. They are the best in the area but lately I find myself having to ask for specific ones. Why? Because the are willing to sell subpar items. Of the 10 or so croissants that were left four of them were clearly overdone, very dark brown if not black. I had to ask for specific ones. I'm lucky. Very very very very lucky to have access to the best croissants I have ever tasted outside of France. Flaky, melt in your mouth butter heaven! My newest addiction from Le Petit Mitron is their blood orange hot chocolate- it is liquid GOLD- nectar of the Gods. The hot chocolate has this wave of orange flavor that give off almost floral notes as you sip it. The percentage of quality chocolate must be very high because I get a great buzz every time I drink it. It's pretty difficult to find a place like Le Petit Mitron, anywhere really. It is a real European bakery. If this is a taste of Europe, then I cannot imagine what other bakeries in Europe are. I had the waffle cookies, dipped in milk chocolate and white chocolate (see photo). The consistency of the cookie is that unlike any American crackers or cookies. It's half way between chewy and crunchy. I'm not sure there's a term for that, but this place has it coined! Maybe its the shortening they use? Whatever it is, it tastes amazing. The prices are a tad bit on the expensive side, but it is WELL worth it. It's not a place you can really compare any bakeries to because it is so unique. read more

I was out of cash, and instead of being forced to buy more product than I wanted, I asked if they would make an exception, and allow me to use my credit card. 5 stars for the croissants 3-4 stars for the other stuff The croissants are really the star here - the almond is my favorite, the chocolate gets my husband drooling. They really are amazing, even cold. The cookies I've tried are good but doesn't cause drool... I'll try a new one each time I come for the croissants. Everything certainly looks beautiful. I'll definitely try some other items, although it's hard to try too many because I'm already obviously getting at least 2 croissants. Some people complain about the prices, but I think they're reasonable. I mean, Starbucks charges $2.50 for a crappy croissant! Paying a little more for much more quality is a no-brainer here. My husband and I headed over to Le Petit Mitron on Sunday morning, around 8am, in the rain. It is such a cute little bakery. We had a chocolate au pain, a cheese croissant, and an almond-chocolate croissant. Wow! They are fantastic, especially the almond-chocolate. Fresh and buttery. One word of warning---we were there by 8:30 and they had already sold out of their famous fruit-filled pastries. Get there as soon as they open on the weekend. Street parking, right across from the R5 station. Oh, and there is a $10 minimum for credit cards, so I'd bring cash if you plan on buying four or less pastries. read more

I'm ecstatic that this place is just a hop, skip and a jump away from my cousin's house in Narberth. We came here with my niece and nephew to satisfy our sweet tooth after lunch and I was in love from the moment I stepped foot in the door. Such a charming little French bakery with the cutest little treats. I had the hardest time deciding because I literally wanted everything. We got a variety of pastries and sweets including the cinnamon roll, chocolate waffle cookie, blueberry tart (this was my favorite!), lacey cookie and a couple other items. The cinnamon roll had the perfect amount of everything and it's much softer and flakier than it looks. Oh, and the blueberry tart..that cream ugh to die for!! The cup of coffee I asked for with a little cream and sugar was perfectly made with just the right amount of both. It was pretty blistery outside for a spring afternoon and I definitely made audible noises (of glee) when that first hot sip touched my lips. I burned my tongue a little but I didn't even care.
