I had high hopes and expectations for this place. When scrolling on Yelp, this place had incredible reviews. I made a reservation to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. The restaurant is small but cozy. I wouldn't say the atmosphere is bad but definitely could be better. Our waitress was kind. The food was good but I was looking for a little more of something. Small restaurant with a limited menu. Very cool atmosphere and fantastic service. We had the chicken sausage pasta which was great, with a pretty good chicken/turkey broth. the special small bite was the octopus and it was it if those works good. Fanatic fennel salad and some kind of heavenly red sauce. Finally we got the Mahi with beluga lentils and sweet potatoes. Perfectly cooked and very interesting compliment. I just had my best meal this month (pictured) paired with a Stella, then a Manhattan for desert. The ambience and staff are some of the best I've seen here. So friendly, so chill. Following an authentically warm welcome from the host I was seated and took in my surroundings, which I'll attempt to chronicle as eclectic upscale casual with scattered diner features. Ask me tomorrow and I'd likely describe it differently but the main thing was, it felt inviting and warm and cozy and worth the trip to the far side of Merrimon. - Service was flawless and effortlessly gracious; many thanks, Nicole. - The salad of charred beets and apples was a masterpiece of texture, taste and presentation. - The focaccia, from Asheville Proper, was decadently satisfying. Its dip tasted a bit off to me - perhaps too much sage? But hey, silly me, it's described as a "sage dipping oil," after all. - The accoutrements to the gnocchi were nice, but the dumplings themselves were unforgettable - pillowy morsels of otherworldly deliciousness with wonderfully crispy edges, oh my! - My apple tart was served with a "fall-spiced" ice cream which brought tears to my eyes - after a fall of unparalleled suffering and loss in Western North Carolina, its familiar, comforting flavors lifted my spirits with the promise of better autumns to come. read more

Saturday around 6pm there should've been a line out the door for this place, and I am manifesting that it will. We got to sit at the bar and Andrew took care of us, as sober people it was nice to see a mocktail section. We ordered the focaccia, meatballs and gnocchi and the cinnamon cheesecake. I should've, and maybe would've given a more private seating lick every one of those plates tonight. The cinnamon meringue was my favorite component tonight. I am a cinnamon girl, and that was delightful. It was also nice that the chef de cuisine (Chef Sam) also brought out the cheesecake. He was another delight that came with it. Strip mall setting isn't special for all the natural beauty of Asheville but I bet if you're a local you probably really appreciate something off the run like this. Might I suggest that this is the best restaurant Asheville has to offer. Every bite was delectable. The service was great. The vibe is right. We got the sweet potato gnocchi and upon first bite, we knew we were in for a treat with the rest of the food. The pork chop was cooked to perfection, as were the veggies and potatoes that came with it. Sauce was stellar. My husband got the wreck fish and he loved it too. He is a hard one to impress and he genuinely enjoyed every bite of everything we got. I've never seen him with no notes. The cinnamon cheesecake is to die for. Another stunning meal at Little D's by Chef Faith Michael Patrick Hall! Sharables: the focaccia with maple crust was exquisite against the Maldon salt. Best bread I've ever had, and that says a lot coming from a carb addict. The beets were on par with every beet dish we've ever had at Little D's - a rejoicing of sweet and savory. The butternut soup was beautiful and made me reconsider my skirting of squash on most occasions. Main: our filet was gracefully prepared, and the sauce was a fun addition but certainly not necessary for such a well curated steak. Excellent experience! We tried a little of everything (focaccia, heirloom tomatoes, lemon ricotta gnocchi, the bistro steak, and strawberry cake), and devoured every bite! Each plate was creative in its layered flavors and beautifully presented, causing us pause to admire it before diving in. The gnocchi was beyond any we have ever had, and worth a second plate for sure. I have never said "I love mushrooms," but the local shiitakes that encircled the bistro steak were definitely crave-worthy. This is not a downtown tourist trap, so we were grateful for manicured ambience and stellar service from our server, Abigail. Dress ranged from jeans and Guns 'n Roses t-shirts to summer linen pants and sundresses. I would like to give a 4.5. The food was excellent and an absolute 5/5! We had 5-6 shareables which were all terrific-smoked pork ribs, grilled beets, scallops with risotto, focaccia, and grilled cauliflower! I also had a non alcoholic gin and tonic which was surprisingly good. The service was pretty good, but seemed disorganized at first. I think maybe they were just maxed out.
