Well this is a fun little Free Library, but the challenge is getting to it! From Larkey Lane you…read moreactually have to drive up or walk up this rough driveway. Since it was raining I decided to drive up. Of course the problem is once you're up there how do you get your car back down. It's very tight to turn around up there so probably best to just walk. It's a narrow tall wood box number of books inside. I contributed some brand new business books to make it even more complete. The box is reasonably well constructed, and looks like it will last quite a few years. I was a little confused by the prior photos for this box, since the Box looks completely different. I wonder if the box was recently refurbished? This is really a fun, older part of Walnut Creek. The roads are quite a bit different than you might expect. This is definitely the most fun I've had getting to a little Free Library.

As we usually do when we have time to kill in a new spot. This little book box is up a small road that looks like a simple stone driveway - we reccomend parking on the street and walking up (it's the road to the right). This locale housed mostly mystery (Agatha Christie) and was rather small but had a lot of pizazz. Yay! Little Free Library

Loewen) *author read nearly 20 standard history textbooks. common themes found: -the process of hero-making i.e. Woodrow Wilson not identified as a racist, H. Keller not i.d. as a radical socialist, only as blind & deaf. -why Christopher Columbus was important not the first explorer to the Americas, just the lst European. -truth about the lst Thanksgiving in 1620 spanish already on the west coast in 1500's, English settlers already went to New England years earlier, leaving an epidemic that wiped out natives. Plymouth was already cleared of forest, had a corn corp the Pilgrims "borrowed" when they arrived. -Native Americans seldom mentioned in history, especially for their resistance to genocide and colonization. -"Gone with the Wind": racism is invisible -invisibility of anti-racism in history textbooks -"land of opportunity" (for people with capital, not workers) -history shown thru actions of American presidents -no mention of Vietnam war -no coverage of recent past (Iraq War) why history is written wrong-follows guidelines suggested by American Legion -inspire children with patriotism -tell truth optimistically -"must dwell on failure only for it's value as a moral lesson, ...must speak chiefly of success" wrong history deters disappeared people from learning, especially social studies. author believes history can be used to train students how to think. conversely, there are political groups who don't want students who can think, only want to train students to obey laws.
