    Custom salad
    Annie C.

I made myself a custom salad. The serving was HUGE. Ingredients were fresh and they had a nice variety to choose from, including beets, bean sprouts, and edamame. I asked for a Caesar dressing on the side but received a little container of a different, similar-looking dressing. However, I didn't mind because it was DELICIOUS. It was slightly smoky and sweet but felt quite light. I wish I could figure out which one it was, because I'd totally get it again.

I was really craving a particular kind of salad I used to make myself. I was being lazy however and decided to have one made for me. I found Little Salad Shop on Yelp while looking for a "chopped salad" establishment. Upon reviewing their menu, I saw that had all of the ingredients to make my once homemade favorite. It was a fast process. It is in the heart of Yale, so parking could be challenging but I went on a Sunday afternoon so no problems for me. They have an assortment of greens. I opted for the mesclun greens. I topped it with candied walnuts, red onion, blue cheese, apple and cranberries. The dressing of choice was a balsamic vinaigrette. Possibly an acquired taste, but the flavors and textures mesh together well. If I ever want a salad, but don't want to buy the ingredients to do it myself, LSS is an option, but for $10, I probably could've made 2! It was good though.

It's a clean quiet cozy salad shop. When I walked in I wasn't sure what I wanted so I got a build ur own salad. All the ingredients were fresh and they were very generous on the portions until I got to the register. I paid a little over $50 for two salads and honestly I was a little shocked at how pricey it was but just ready to just eat. They only give you one dressing cup for a large salad so I had to pay extra for more dressing. Let me tell you, this salad was so delicious.. the freshness was perfectly on point, the crisp lettuce and arugula was bomb. I absolutely recommend this place 100%. Next time I'm in town I'm absolutely getting another salad regardless of how pricey it is. The staff were friendly and kind.

One the best and healthiest places in New Haven. Came here for a fresh lunch and this place nailed it. Came in saw all the best fresh items I could order. They offered both salads and wraps, I choose the salad and there was lots of options to choose from. The dressing selection had lots to choose from as well. I must say I will be coming back here whenever I visit New Haven. They also had lots of chips to choose from to add to the side.

3rd time here in the last two months and the soups, wraps and salads are amazing!!! I've tried the ranchero salad and wrap, baked potato soup and broccoli cheddar soup. They have all been amazing. The soups are nice and creamy! Salads are perfect portions! I tried to save some for my husband but I couldn't stop eating it. Definitely a great lunch and even dinner spot!

Even though this comes up when you check in, they say they no longer honor it. Then take it down.

I was looking for something healthy for a late lunch in New Haven yesterday and I was glad when I remembered this place. I went in to order a salad. There were plenty of choices, so I asked the young woman behind the counter which ones were the most popular. "They are all popular," she said. Oh, okay, thanks. I asked what the non-meat protein options were. "Tofu and avocado." Avocado, which has minimal protein, was an interesting option. I ended up going with the Ranchero salad with the unmentioned eggs as my protein. As the salad was made, I went to check in on Yelp and up came a deal for a $1 off my order. "Yeah, we don't take that," I was told. Oh. They might want to have Yelp take it down then. No exceptions were being made here. Oh, well, it's only a dollar. There really isn't more than a bench to sit down on here, so I went in search of a place to eat my salad. Once seated, I opened my salad. The good thing is that they give you a lot of greens and toppings. There isn't much art in the presentation - it's all just piled up - but there is plenty of it. So, on with the salad. I put just a third of the container of the buttermilk ranch on my salad. Oh my goodness, how do people eat this dressing and why isn't there a warning about its ultra-spiciness? Not spicy like, hey, this has a kick. I mean more like, hey, I'm sweating and I should have bought four bottles of water instead of one. Thank God I had only put a bit of the dressing on. Otherwise it would have been completely inedible. I pushed the part with the most dressing to the side and soldiered on. In the end, I left about a third. I could not stomach any more of that five-alarm dressing and needed to head out in search of water. I needed another bottle of water and some froyo to cool down. All that said, I have gotten some good food here in the past. If they take that dressing down a few notches or at least warn people about it, it's fine. But nothing about buttermilk ranch says creamy fiery cayenne dressing.

Kind of surprised with the crappy reviews. The only con I see for this place is lack of seating. There are benches inside but no tables- not ideal for a salesperson so I ate my salad in the car. Pros: fresh fresh fresh ingredients and a lot of them. Can make a ton of salads with different ingredients every time. The salads that they have on the menu are cool, but next time I'll def make my own. Quick service. Walked in and walked out with a salad within 5 min during the 12:30 rush. My 10 dollar salad will last 2 meals for sure. They also have smoothies and wraps. When you are dying for something healthy in the Yale area, this is the place to go!

The Cesar salad was absolutely delicious. I got a large filling portion and the ingredients were fresh and vibrant. This is one of the best salads I've ever had.

New Haven Salad Shop is a good place to go if you are in the mood for a big salad with good toppings options. You choose a salad or a wrap and then either select a pre-conceived creation or create your own with the toppings of your choice. You choose which type of lettuce you'd like, four veggies, 2 "toppers," one cheese, one protein which is optional and costs 2 dollars extra, and one dressing. The ingredients here are generally fresh enough and there is a wide variety of different toppings options to choose from. I like the wraps better than the salads because they are a bit more filling and easier to eat. The best veggies here are the carrots, red peppers, corn, celery, chick peas, broccoli, etc. The best toppers are jalapeno peppers, wasabi peas, and hard boiled egg. Tofu is the only vegetarian protein option and the tofu is usually a bit soft. The best wrap flavour is garlic and herb. The blue cheese dressing adds some much needed fat and flavour to the otherwise tame salads. They also have Dirty Potato Chips if you want some unhealthiness with your salad. Overall, this place is a great option for a quick semi-healthy bite. It is a little pricy for what it is, at 10+ dollars for a salad. It's still a great place to have in Downtown New Haven.

I picked spinach, arugula, mushrooms, and their house made queso blanco. The bakery items looked amazing but I was full! So I got a piece of their carrot cake, which other customers were raving about, as well as a vegan gluten-free sunbutter cookie. I very much appreciate that they have outdoor seating! They happen to be very close to a smoke shop, so eating outside they just were a lot of people vaping or smoking as they passed. It's also a particularly hectic corner with people going to the theater or for music show. But I am planning to come back while I'm here and to try something else!

Soups and salads come with the classic Claire mini loaf! A delicious buttery(is it vegan? don't know) mini loaf of bread, just as tasty as I remember it from my childhood. Walking inside around lunchtime, there was just one other table occupied. The waitress quickly welcomed us and brought us menus. I'll be honest, I was not sure what anything was in the menu. It is sorted into four sections: appetizers, beef, chicken and vegetarian. I went with something from the vegetarian section and hoped for the best. My friend went with the chicken and beef. Shortly after, our food was brought out to us. There's no utensils, everything is eaten by hand. We received "injeras" these are somewhat similar to crapes, primarily used for scooping and dipping into an assortment of food. You'll have to gain some experience with eating with these, if you're like me you'll pretty quickly land a stain on your garment. We received a basket full of rolled up injeras. Our plates also had a large spread out injeras. There were three scoops of traditional vegetable meals, lentils, split peas and green beans. The servings were very generous. I enjoyed the flavor profiles on all of these. They ranged from mildly spicy to a bit more spicy. Now that I have some experience at Lalibela, next time I'll be able to modify and customize my plate a bit more. I appreciate that there are so many ways to perfect your options at Lalibela, everything is very flavorful and the portions are substantial. It takes a bit of getting used to having no silverware.

The large combo platter comprises your choice of seven dishes, the medium platter is five choices, and the small is three. The five items depicted in my photo of my medium-size plate are, clockwise from the top, grilled tofu, steamed broccoli, baked sweet potatoes, sautéed green beans with red peppers, and curried potatoes. The above descriptions double as the simple names of the dishes. The food does not masquerade behind pretentious titles, nor does it appear flamboyant or pretend to be fanciful. What you're served are affordable and generous portions of delicious and nutritious food. Real food. Americans call this natural food. In the Rasta lexicon, natural foods are redefined as Ital foods. As you might adduce from the photo, the café's two owners are Rastas, and their cuisine is authentic Jamaican Rastafari Ital. "Ital" is derived from the word "vital." To provide "vitality," Ital food on your plate differs little from how it looks on the farm. Ital food is usually vegan, but not always. Only four of the five Rasta cafés in Connecticut and nearby Worcester are strictly vegan. As there is no Board of Ital Cuisine to issue certifications, Ital cooking does vary with the territory. The Ital food served at Caribbean Style Vegan is, as its name attests, always vegan. It also is always nourishing, colorful, and skillfully prepared. Nothing is ever too spicy or too salty or too sweet or too oily or overcooked or undercooked. Grilled in a spicy barbecue sauce, even the jerk tofu is humanely spiced. With just the medium platters, I always feel satiated but never bloated, evidence of the frugal use or total absence of oil. Never drowned in oily sauces, the veggies remain visually recognizable and inherently flavorful. Caribbean Style Vegan stands as my favorite of the seven Ital cafés in which I have dined both stateside and in Jamaica. At the two Ital cafés that I visited in Kingston, neither served any mock meats. Yet at some cafés in the U.S., their varieties of mock meats almost equal their numbers of veggie dishes. I am mystified that in our corner of New England they serve so many highly processed mock meats, a concession to the American lust for meat. In contrast, Caribbean Style Vegan upholds a higher standard. It serves only a single mock meat. Grains, beans, greens, and root vegetables predominate. Most veggies are steamed; a few are sautéed; none are deep-fried. My kind of food. For in-house dining, you'll find two sunlit tables along the south-facing wall of plate glass window. Still, the café is more conducive for takeout. I have witnessed a steady flow of regular customers who sometimes place multiple orders of takeout meals to deliver to their families waiting at home. Yet even when other customers wait in line with you, the wait is always short. Their social media accounts is seldom updated. So view only their website. Yet, the website menu is viewable only during open hours. To place an online order or simply to view the website menu, you must wait until 12 noon, Wednesday to Saturday.
