Really nice poke place--great toppings and probably the best you can get in terms of raw fish in New Haven. 5 stars because it's one of the first poke spots in New Haven and the best one at the moment. The rice, toppings, and dressings are fantastic. We tend to get half and half tuna and salmon, lots of stuff on top (especially crab salad, seaweed salad, both types of roe, both types of seaweed, daikon, and furakake), and the miso + sesame dressings. You can also pour yourself some yummy garlic/chili and sesame oils on the side. It actually seems pretty on par with what we have in Boston. (Not quite West Coast fish, but the rest might be similar quality.) Get the large bowl to get another protein and more space for stuff! With any order (I think), you can get a miso soup for $1 more. Solid basic miso soup. Super friendly service, and a large space perfect for studying. I'd love to curl up here with my computer but I'm farther downcampus... I sure do love a poke bowl. I was smart enough to arrive here around 11:55am instead of a few minutes after noon. I proved myself right a few minutes after arriving when I walked out with my beautiful poke salad and passed right by the line that was now out the door. Be mindful of this on a weekday. The poke options are typical. Tuna, salmon, tofu, chicken, etc. Sauce options galore and items which I have to ask about because I have no clue what they are. But no matter, the toppings are free and basically unlimited so it's the perfect opportunity to try everything. The regular sized bowl is more than enough, even with a salad base instead of the more filling rice option, I had trouble finishing it. Prices will run you around $10+ for your lunch or dinner here. Not sure if this was just an off day or what, but I came with three friends to find out that they had ran out of tofu and salmon for protein. I'm vegetarian, so I ended up getting a bowl without any protein at all. There was a fly that landed on the tuna and none of the four employees did anything about it... The toppings were incredibly sparse: no hijiki seaweed, which is one of the ones I wanted. I ended up getting whatever they had left that was vegetarian. The cash register was held up because they mischarged an earlier customer, so the line kept growing and it took forever to get out. Oh yeah, the bowls didn't come with utensils--we had to ask for that separately. And also we asked for extra sauce on the side. The plastic lid for the to-go sauce container dropped to the floor and they picked it up and used it for our sauce. At least change just the lid, please? This place is in such disarray, and I can't help but see it as a reflection of the irresponsible (or more accurately, invisible) management at Pokemoto. There was nobody to help the cashier process the mischarge, which led it to take forever. There was nobody preparing fresh ingredients and a whole bunch of options were out by 6 pm. There was nobody to prevent this entire assembly line catastrophe from continuing to snowball into a pile of stress on workers who I am sure are already exhausted with poor management and working in stuffy, poorly-ventilated environments. On the bright side, the food wasn't terrible. Still won't come back though. read more

I'm not really sure how their system works but I think if you get the standard bowl you get two protein choices and unlimited toppings. Toppings are pretty cool, including fish roe, random seaweed stuff, and that ponzu citrus sauce ppl go crazy for. They use this small ice cream scoop thing to scoop your protein portion, it's kinda funny...it definitely portions accurately. They also help you shake and mix everything together (like sweet greens but for poke)- the end result isn't always super instagrammable..but still delicious! Felt so healthy afterwards. read more

I was in New Haven for a weekend. I was really looking for some unique food before a Yale hockey game. Walked around for an hour trying to figure out a good place. I found an AMAZING place!! The idea of the food is pure genius. I was trying to find a sushi place but in reality this place is better than any sushi place could be. When you look at the prices you may think they are expensive but by the time you finish your bowl (if you even do finish it) you realize you'd pay a good $8 more at a restaurant for that much food. It is basically sushi, just with more meat and vegetables. If you get a large bowl for $13 you get more rice, fish, and vegetable than you would if you went to a sushi restaurant and ordered 20 sushi rolls. If I lived in New Haven I would probably go there every other day. I have never heard of poke before I walked through the doors. read more

Pokémoto is a fairly standard Hawaiian poké place. Not too far from Yale's campus, it caters mostly to students hungry for good poké. If you don't know how poké works, it's basically deconstructed sushi, places into a bowl. You can get a bowl, a burrito, or a salad version of poké. There are 5 proteins options and you can get two to three of them. Then, you choose your fillings (vegetables and fruits) and sauce before adding toppings (such as tempura flakes and crispy onion flakes). The one thing I'll say about Pokémoto is that they were very generous with the rice. My friends and I went and we were very full by the end of it. Pokemoto serves some tasty poke bowls! I've come when it's rather crowded for lunch, and service isn't always the fastest. However, the staff are really nice and open to answering any questions. The poke bowls here are one sized, but you can order different amounts of protein. They currently have a limited number of fish options, which is less than I'm used to. Definitely hoping they add some more. I got a poke bowl with salmon (as both my scoops), ponzu, and many of the mix-ins, toppings, and crunch. I really appreciate the chopped mangos, as well as the different types of tobiko. The wasabi ones were really cool with a slight hint of wasabi. The sushi rice wasn't quite vinegared which sushi rice makes me think of, but I didn't have an issue with this. Good to note that if you don't like choosing your bowl, they have some pre-picked options for you. All in all, I'm quite happy that there's a poke place in New Haven now! I've been there 4 times already and plan on going until my mercury levels are through the roof. New Haven was in need of a place like this, and I'm so excited that Pokémoto is up and running! Went on opening day and had a wonderful time. Enthusiastic and attentive staff, clean dining areas, and wonderful fast-casual atmosphere. You could tell they were still working out a few first-day kinks (sadly, they had run out of avocado when I got there!) but I'm sure that these small issues will be fixed. FOOD: I made my own bowl with ahi tuna and salmon, white rice, and mixed greens. The fish was of good quality--no need to be concerned! The unlimited toppings were impressive, and they even had some especially wonderful ones including masago, seaweed, and daikon. I highly recommend mixing picy mayo and ponzu sauce as your "flavor"--you won't be disappointed. However, descriptions of the sauces would be helpful for those unfamiliar with Poké. (Or, even adjusting the sauce menu to create categories of sweet/tangy/sour, etc.) Overall, all the ingredients tasted very fresh and led to a satisfying, filling, and tasty meal! SERVICE: The staff was amazingly attentive, though this may have been compounded by the fact that we visited on opening day. I know that the business prior was some sort of smoothie/coffee shop I think. It came and went but this place is exactly what this area needed. I don't think that there is any other poke spot in New Haven and it's amazing. This is my second time eating there and I'm in love. It's so good in fact that even after visiting the place twice, each time I've had the rice bowl. It's so filling. And the amount of options they have to add to the bowl is astounding. The only struggling was and will always be PARKING. Downtown New Haven parking is always the worst. The meters during the week are only for 1 hour. I asked for my topping a lot of them fell back into their buckets and when I asked her to give me more she said there will be a charge, but umm hello you barely gave me any topping!
