My boyfriend's been coming to the island for the past 10 years and I've been for the last 5 and we have been wanting to try this place for awhile. My bf's brother-in-law is a fisherman and so there are some pretty high standards as it relates to seafood and specifically local seafood in his family :) Upon recommendation, we finally stopped in to try their poke bowls for a late lunch. It's a super small space with limited seating (just the sushi bar counter), but it was late enough in the day that it wasn't super crowded. I imagine this place is mostly for take out (which we'll definitely be doing in the future!) the poke bowls were AMAZING. Super fresh and good portions. We also got the Surf City Roll, which was a special and though it was a bit too much food for just the two of us, we devoured it anyway! The service is also great, as everyone was incredibly friendly and attentive. As I mentioned, well definitely be back for takeout and even to dine in (it's BYOB!!!). read more

Never open. Tried numerous times in person. Also called when web said they were open but they weren't!

Tuna appetizer was delicious. Spicy tuna roll was only siracha and not spicy mayo. I've never had it that way and I couldn't eat it. Shrimp tempura had an odd taste and texture. I was told I couldn't use the restroom when we first came in and sat down but once I started looking up the law and discussing with my son and after we ordered our main courses I was told I could used the restroom. Little hidden local gem! Small seating area. Everyone talks to you as if they are friends and join into conversation. It's actually very nice! They have a sushi bar I think most people take out. The sushi was really fresh tasting we had the spicy salmon and tuna. Shumai was great steamed. We also had the poke bowl , everything was so pretty and great! read more

Their motto is "cheap sushi isn't good and good sushi isn't cheap" but I guess bad sushi doesn't have to be cheap either considering this was insanely overpriced and not even that good. Also, three rolls took at least 30 minutes to get and it wasn't even that busy. Rice tasted bad and considering the rolls were 90% rice the rolls were bad too. We order California roll, sweet potato roll, and shrimp tempura roll. Barely any sweet potato on the roll, California roll had 99% avocado and shrimp tempura was barely fried and drowned in eel sauce. Only redeeming quality was the guy at the front he seemed nice I give him 5 stars. read more

My boyfriend and I love poke bowls and we were looking for something light on our way off the island, so we decided to try this. We made it obvious it was our first time in there and the staff wasn't very helpful with ordering. I got the classic poke bowl and it was pretty tasteless. Seemed like a couple drops of sauce was in the bottom with the rice, came with wasabi and ginger which wasn't stated (I would chose to not get those personally) topping portions were awful, I had barely even half of half an avocado and 4 thin slices of cucumber. We had friends over again this year and since Little Sumo's was so good last year we decided to give them another shot. Four adults and we ordered three specialty rolls, five maki rolls, and some nigiri sushi...I expected to have to take out a loan, but it was very reasonable. In one of the rolls we got, they DID use real blue crab, but in another it was a crab stick...I don't care-just about every sushi joint in NJ uses the crab stick.. I love this place, I really do. Great special rolls, very nice/fresh sushi, and service with a smile...and that goes a long way on a busy Thursday night when we called in a late order. I was looking forward to eating fresh sushi on the island, think since the fish on the island is great this will be too. But the tiny portion sizes speak for them selves. I use to love this place. Until about 10 minutes ago. Sumo, you unfortunately just lost a few customers for life. A friend and I were looking to enjoy some of your sushi and strolled down the block to sumo. As we sat down a family of 3 was leaving. Which left only my friend and I at sumos. We cracked open our beers and began to mull over the menu. There seemed to be some conversation between a young kid working there and the sushi chef. Eventually the kid told us "you're going to have to wait an hour for sushi. A big order was just placed". I said, "I really wish you told us that before we opened our beers.". To which the chef said, " you should have asked how long the wait was.". Excuse me?! I just sat down in your restaurant to eat in your establishment. I even asked, is it possible for you to squeeze our small order in. The answer was no. I'm sorry but if this is how you treat your customers you won't get a dime from me. If you can't handle the volume hire another chef. And if you're going to be rude to customers, you might want to cash out that 401k your ship in sinking. I was craving sushi today and figured I'd give this place another try. I continue to be disappointed with the sushi on LBI and today was no different. Spicy tuna roll was reasonably priced as suggested in earlier reviews but so what if you get mostly that crunch filler (yuck). And the salmon avocado roll was mostly avocado. The salmon nigiri was a mound of rice with a very thin slice of fish. I hate when they cheap out and give you less fish! Lame. I'd rather pay more and get good sushi that is a good fish to rice ratio. read more

This restaurant manager is ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL. We have been customers since they opened. We put in a $180.00 order and went to pick it up. Upon returning home, we immediately realized that a huge amount of the order was missing. We immediately called and spoke with someone and explained by item what was missing. We were told to come back and that they would make it immediately. My brother and I drove 20 minutes back there only to be told by an obnoxious manager that we would need to pay her for the additional food. We explained that we paid for it already and that not only did they not pack so much of the sushi, but they also did not give us the spicy mayo and eel sauce we were charged for. The manager kept reiterating how she packed the bags herself and was certain everything was included. When asked if perhaps she put a huge part of the order in some else's bag that was there at the same time, she refused to answer and maintained a completely confrontational and inappropriate demeanor. She just kept insisting that she would not release any additional food unless it was paid for. This is utterly disgraceful and anyone that has a shred of pride in their own business should not patronize this excuse for a business. How dare they treat anyone this way. We told this horrible person that she would lose 2 loyal families and she simply told me to leave. read more

Wow, their sushi is fantastic. One of the best meals I've had on LBI. The Surf City roll was outstanding. I could have eaten five of them by myself. The Volcano, Jetty, and Tiger rolls were also delicious. Price wise, it is right on par with most sushi places. However, the quality was excellent and you can't pay too much for great quality sushi in my opinion. My only complaint was the lack of seating. There are exactly 5 bar stools. That's it. read more

On the wall there's a saying- "Great sushi isn't cheap, cheap sushi isn't great." After getting a spicy poké bowl, I still have no idea how the fish is because there barely was any! The bowl itself is $15- almost the most I've ever spent. The spicy tuna is chopped up tuna tossed in sriracha sauce and there was probably 1-2 tablespoons of it in the bowl, I even looked under the other toppings in case I was just missing it. The spicy crab is imitation crab which was disappointing because we were 2 minutes from the bay & ocean. The bowl comes with edamame, cucumber, bean sprouts (there was so much it felt like a filler for the lack of fish), ginger, and seaweed salad. It was presented nicely with a fresh clipped orchid flower too, but I would've kindly traded it in for more fish! It wasn't a large portion, and wasn't very filling. There was barely any rice, maybe half a cup squished into the bottom. The place was neat but empty, and the boy who took my order was oblivious to anything happening. This might've been one of the most disappointing bowls I've had: A+ for presentation, B for portion size, C for actual amount of fish & food you're paying for. read more

The sushi here is FANTASTIC! You can definetly taste the quality and freshness of the fish and a lot of it comes right from Viking Village! The staff are very friendly and treat you like family. If your searching for a good meal I highly suggest stopping in and remember it's byob (there's also a liquor store across the street). Seating is limited so that's something to keep in mind especially on the weekends. Some of my favorite rolls are the Barnegat Light and the Yellowtail with Scallions. THE RUDEST SERVICE I HAVE EVER SEEN - we spent over 100 dollars ordering at 8:40pm and literally told over and over they close at 9pm. The staff actually talked about us in front of us as we waited - that we were going to make them stay past their 9pm closing time on a Saturday night in August. THE FOOD WAS WRONG when we got home and we were disturbed by their horrific openly rude and arrogant service. Several rolls were wrong when we unpacked our food and the overall bad vibe from the restaurant was astonishing. One sushi chef told us we should wait outside because they wanted to sweep. NOT THE LBI I KNOW AND LOVE. When I went to check our packaged order the girl snottily said in front of my family "They're just trying to make us stay here longer."
