I want to give an update after 9 months of having my hair ruined at this salon. This has been one of the most terrible things that has ever happened to me. I have spent easily over $1000 on wigs, headbands, and treatments to cover up my damaged hair. Some of my hair fell out at the roots, and now my hair looks like it is thinning from all of the hair I lost. I came in as a walk-in with my daughter in hopes of getting a matching mother/daughter tattoo. I am a NEW tattoo recipient! I had a great experience with our tattoo artist, Joe. Joe brought a very good vibe has a calm and cool demeanor. He paid very close attention to what we wanted and when he came back with his interpretation was exquisite! I can't even begin to say how much I love Justin and the work he's done for my hair! I started coming to him two years ago when I had a meager amount of purple streaks in my hair and from there he turned me into the green and black haired Goddess I am. For the first couple of years we did green streaks - this entailed dying my roots black to cover up all my old lady grey hairs, bleaching the green pieces, and then dying green over the bleach. Even with all the bleaching my hair has never felt fried and has always looked so fresh and colorful. Recently we added green and yellow extensions to my hair and I'm absolutely obsessed. I get so many compliments on my hair and the best is that it feels healthy. Justin is so fun to be around, we always have so much to talk about and he knows my whole life. He's just such a special and magical gem. I also love Kristina! She hasn't done my hair but she's a pleasure to be around and I can see the work she does on her clients is great. Had a facial on 02/08. As someone who values skincare as a routine part of my life, I cannot recommend this salon for its facial services (though I see it is better known for its hair services). I actually feel extremely upset about the time and money I wasted on this service. I'd like to start of mentioning that the aesthetician, Alex, is good. She did the service efficiently and the facial itself was nice. I'd rate it a 7/10 overall. That being said, I was instructed to come in 15 mins early for the check in process. I came on time, and had to wait 45 minutes for my appointment due to lag from the earlier service. 45 mins wait time while having an appointment is absurd. The "60 minute custom facial" itself was less than 45 minutes. Got in at 3:30, got out at 4:10. The facial room is not enclosed, so there isn't a ceiling or even a door (curtain only). Thus, it is LOUD. On a Wednesday at 3:30PM, the salon was packed and that noise encompasses the facial room. There should be a disclaimer to this on their website or something. Even if it isn't a "spa-like experience", this is not a appropriate setting for a facial. I've been to several other salons that do facials and services, but the rooms are separated. This feels very much like a money-making scheme from this salon. If you're charging the same price for facials as full spa's, then it shouldn't be a loud room with 45 min wait time. Katie makes live by the sword such a safe & fun environment for everyone in her chair. Live by the Sword Salon is one of the best, most all-inclusive salons in the city. The space is beautiful and I have been a regular there since it opened in 2019. Kristina is amazing. From bright orange to the perfect ginger, to blunt bangs, a fiercely short bob and now a shag, she can do it all. She always takes care of my hair and listens to me go back and forth about cutting it again (and then makes sure I don't). I cannot recommend seeing her enough, she is talented and incredibly kind. Best experience ever!! Curly hair clients that want to get your hair colored but still keep the integrity of your curl pattern..you haaaaave to see Gus! I was recommended to him by a friend of mine. The space itself is so cute and everyone is really great! Awesome energy: well trained staff, cleanliness at a 10, good music, comfortable seating. Obviously on top of that, you'll receive an amazing service! I originally went in just for a consultation. Gus was waiting right by the door and greeted me with a warm welcome. He looked at my hair and was extremely realistic with me--honesty and integrity is everything. I really wanted an ashy balayage and my photos were a bit lighter but he reassured me we could do something close to it but if I come in for another session, it could be achieved. I felt really reassured and we went straight into lightening my hair! He went foil by foil with the upmost precision and was explaining to me the entire process. It was treated as a color correction and I was there for roughly 4 hours? It was such a breeze considering because of the amount of hair I have I'll stay in the salon all day sometimes. Gus was QUICK, thorough and honest and so encouraging! While my hair was getting washed he was like "I love it! It looks soo good" and that made me feel awesome! If my stylist is confident, I'll be guaranteed walking out with the best hair ever! And he made my dreams come true!! I am SOOO impressed and in love!! Y'all HAVE to come! I only spent roughly $400 (with trim and tip included ) but starting was in the $200 range...a steal honestly because he got me to where I wanted in ONE session. Backstory: Obviously from my before picture, you can see that it's taken me a while to decide what to do with my hair. I did an at home bleach almost a year prior and have been dying my hair pink and purple ever since. I got sick of it and wanted something new and my roots were SUPER GROWN OUT, so I visited live by the sword with purplish hair, ready to go full redhead. At first they were a little concerned that it wouldn't come out the way I wanted, but after a test strand, they said they'd try it! I spent a few weeks fading my hair and came in for the appointment. The place is spotless and everyone there is so friendly! Kristina spent hours fixing my mop and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. I had a consultation with Kristina & she was so warm & transparent about what we were able to do with my hair since I originally wanted extensions but had a jacked up color & awkward growing length pixie cut. WORST HAIRCUT of my LIFE!!! So I went in for Julianna and the style of cut that I wanted didn't seem difficult, I was getting layered pixie cut with bangs. I felt even more confident when she said she had been doing "big chops" all week. She was a nice girl and I feel bad leaving the review but I cannot stay silent because it looks so bad. First red flag was when she told me my pixie cut was technically a "medium cut and it was $20 more" I was annoyed but didn't really say much since they hold your card information, I felt stuck like I couldn't just get up and leave or they'd charge me for the broken appointment. I hadn't been to a hair salon in 10 years because of bad experiences but this takes the cake! She left me with lopsided hair and the back of my head looks like a bowl cut! She didn't blend any of my hair at all, I have rough cuts all over my head that are just blunt straight across on the most noticeable parts that frame my face and she left me a little bald patch about the size of a pea behind my earThat my brother pointed out! Dude I didn't notice these things because I was in a rush to leave & she didn't even show me what the back of my head looked like. I honestly gave her the benefit of the doubt since I paid $55 + a $15 tip! When I finally got home and washed my hair and tried to style it and realized I couldn't because it was so blunt, my top layer is longer and everything sits weird like a literal bowl cut. I saw every single flaw and I literally cried. I thought she did a good job at first glance and even tipped her well but I regret ever stepping foot in that place. Everyone was friendly and it seemed more high end but guys it's all a facade, I don't know any of the other stylists work but she JACKED my hair up and I'm going to get it FIXED TODAY by someone else! It's not worth the money, you're better off going somewhere else and if u decide to still go I suggest getting ur haircut by a different stylist there. I SHOWED HER what I wanted and I even said "do u need me to hold the picture for reference?" and she told me no! The girl with the purple/black hair is me and what it ended up looking like from the back. It looks ridiculous! Update: so the manager was nice enough to offer for someone to fix it or for a refund. Thankfully I was able to get compensated and I appreciated them handling it professionally. read more

There is a reason the have 5 stars. I went in with a fried blue stained raggedy mess with the near unobtainable goal of silver. Gus worked his magic. Holy. Hell. He cut off all of the super damaged hair, and managed to get my hair to silver without damaging it. It looks healthier than when I came in, which is absolutely nuts. Aside from his master skills, he is an incredibly sweet, funny, charming guy. Kristina and Justin were super cool too. The shop just generally has good vibes all around as well as beautiful decor. The gold theme is absolutely my jam, and the bathroom is super clean and smells amazing. I'm going back for extensions because personally I love having long hair, which I cannot wait for Gus to do. We did about a 6 hr dye job which included a double process and two toning sessions as well as a shadow root to achieve a perfect ashy blonde.
