We've signed up for the 8 classes option that Jan offers and have attended 2 in person puppy obedience classes and 1 zoom behavior modification class so far. The difference in our 3 month old pomsky is night and day! My neighbor was proudly walking her 2 young poodle doodles (big ones) around the neighborhood and stopped to tell me how grateful she was to started classes with Jan. We brought our year old doodle for beginning novice training. Jan is amazing, caring, and focused in her training g. It is well organized and you'll see differences in you pooch after just one session. Our doodle pulled and pulled when walking and especially when he'd see another dog walker. He had a regular collar on- we had also tried a harness and he pulled more. One session and using a pinch collar he baca me a well mannered guy! It isn't used to 'choke or hurt' the dog, but a gentle tug and brain reset. He's been walking nicely ever since. We'll be going back for more opportunities to help our furry family member to become all he can be. We're hoping he could eventually become a therapy dog to visit hospitals and care homes. I have been training with Jan and Live Oak Dog Obedience since I moved to SLC in July and would highly recommend to anyone. Some background: My dog Maggie is a 85-90 lb german shepherd/great dane/mastiff mix. She had already finished all 3 levels of classes at Petsmart which teaches only positive reinforcement, but she was developing very strong protection instincts and leash aggression. It was especially bad when encountering men, she would pull, bark, lunge, and growl. The solution from the Petsmart trainers was she shouldn't be allowed to bark at people, so to remove her from the situation. So I would avoid if possible, but pull her away if starts barking, but I think pulling her away when she was reacting may have contributed to making the reaction worse. I walk Maggie everyday (otherwise my house would suffer) and her reactivity was making me scared to bring her out. I emailed Jan about starting training and she had me call her and she immediately gave me some tips for handling Maggie at home even before the first class. She also recommended my husband bring Maggie for the first class since I was getting nervous/scared going to new places with her. The first thing that happened was changing her head collar to a prong. Wow, it was night and day - immediate change in behavior correction in just the first class. I haven't had a dog since I was a kid and now the recent dog training trend is positive training only and that the prong is evil, but honestly, Maggie's aggressive behavior was never corrected while on the head collar and she wouldn't even know treats were around, even using the highest value treat and shoving them into her mouth. And having to drag her away using the head collar could be done but was super physically and emotionally exhausting for me. Jan teaches you how to properly use the prong collar and will answer any questions you have about using it. She emphasizes it should be loose at all times unless you are correcting. (I had worked with another trainer before that also said the head collar contributes to more aggression because dogs are irritated with it on their nose. It provided better control though than the alternative that they suggested so we kept using it. After starting to use the prong, we haven't gone back to the head collar.) We also started the e-collar with Jan which is critical for off-leash work. She has a class just for going over basics and how to use it properly. We did a private with Jan when my parents were visiting. I had brought Maggie to my parents house and she really reacted to my father and he was scared of her which didn't help the situation. I had to keep Maggie separated to make sure nothing happened. So when my parents came to visit, I had Jan over on the first day of the visit. Jan worked with us for an hour or so and gave us some really great solutions to help us. She had suggested keeping Maggie on leash the whole time they were visiting, but she was doing so well without any incident, we let her off leash by the second day of their visit and Maggie and my father became friends before he left. She also worked with us on getting Maggie to stop attacking the moving trashcans. It has been months now and Maggie has graduated from the Beginner Novice and Intermediate levels and will now start Advance classes. I love the class format. Jan holds the classes at different locations and the class rosters are not set, so you dog gets exposure going to different locations (usually busy with lots of people and kids) and exposure to different dogs. Jan also has walk and train classes which takes your pup out into the real work to practice what you learn in class. Some of the places I would never imagine for me to take by dog but because Jan is holding the class, I have so much confidence and Maggie always does great. And if she reacts, I know how to correct her or Jan will be there to help. She also watches and tells you when to correct before anything escalates. We have also done a couple of agility classes with Kelsey. Those classes are located in the barn behind Jan's house. Those are fun and is a good working activity. read more

Jan at Live Oak is fabulous. She understands dogs and their owners. Spend time in the beginning class and practice so you and dog feel confident before jumping to intermediate. Classes aren't too hard to get into and they aren't overcrowded. I really like the classes when we go to a park or such but they're not as often so more difficult to get into. She never touches my dogs and encourages me to do what I am comfortable with, but she is clear with her reasoning for why she is recommending a certain action. Jan is amazing. Her skills to help me personalize how I chose to accept my dog to behave are indescribable(on/off furniture dogs, in bed dogs, and MANNERS). My almost one year old giant Schnauzer is learning to help me and companion me. I have a brain tumor, I'm unstable, I'm scared, my dog is my companion to keep my cool in public places as well as a support if needed. She learned so quickly to attend me up stairs, she hears emotion in my voice and barks to let me know I need to change my environment, we are working on a better signal. I love the group outings and wish for more! She trains using the pull collars, I don't know the correct name, and the correct way to use them. You can keep using that or she also offers e-collar classes. Great for me as jerking a collar can cause anxiety. I've done private classes with Jan, highly recommended for specific things. She does hike training. Off leash training (once your pup is ready). I've attached photos of an outing at the Deer Valley Luncheon. Do more events like this!! We also have done the rattlesnake avoidance class, we hike a lot, Utah has a higher and higher growing population on basically ALL dog friendly hikes. I got my full size golden doodle as a puppy. I had never trained a dog on my own. We have 4 kids and with such a big dog I wanted to make sure she is well trained and good with the kids. Jan helped us immensely. She quickly caught bad habits the dog was developing and taught me how to fix them. She does a question and answer session EVERY class. It was helpful to listen to other people's questions as well as be able to ask my own. I worried our dog was hyper and crazy at the beginning but by following the instructions Jan gave us we taught the dog to follow and obey rules. It's funny, but when Jan explains something you feel like it's so obvious you should have known that. Her training is well thought out and very straightforward. So far one of our dogs is doing very well, the younger one is still catching on, but both are developing much better manners. We "inherited" my son's dog, given to him as a birthday present by a former high school girlfriend. (I know, a shirt would've been a better gift!) She found the pup on KSL, last of the litter and an emotional adoption. So, a few months later, off they go to their respective colleges and guess who gets to raise the dog? A mixed breed, Lab and Heeler which made him a retriever who herded by nipping legs, hands etc. He fought other dogs if food fell to the floor. I feared for my house guests safety so would lock him in a room. He was headed to the Animal Shelter. Then I saw the Live Oak Dog Obedience class being held at Dimple Dell Rec. At last resort I called Jan, who promptly returned my call. After the first class I knew I had to establish who was the boss. Jan showed me the "Alpha Roll" when he acted up in class and behavior issues began to change. He sits, stays, heels and responds to my commands. We've since taken other classes and he has advanced nicely. We're still guarded with our grand baby and use a mesh, breathable muzzle (on Jan's advice.)
