My stylist Sharntai recently moved to this salon - and I'm ecstatic about the new place. The ambiance is great - very relaxing and boutique-like, and most importantly, it's accommodating. For the quality of haircare, maintenance, and styling I received, the prices are more than reasonable. This is definitely going to be my new sanctuary on Saturday for true R&R. I called Friday morning and made an appointment for Tuesday after. I was schedule for a virgin relaxer, cut, and style when she said it would cost $250 I almost hung up an said thank you for your time, but I booked anyways. It's a very small salon with a nice atmosphere. Before learning my hair Liz asked me if I was sure that I wanted to relax my hair. The relaxer was so great and didn't even burn or smell she probably could've left it in there all day. Soon she washed, conditioned and put me under a steam dryer next she cut and style. I appreciate the owner responding to my review, nevertheless, I stand on my high expectation of customer service. Liz was completely nasty to me, which was a turn off--and I am not the only customer who has experienced this, as I've read through all reviews on the business. To drive across town, be faced with a terrible disposition, embarrassed in front of a client, AND be charged essentially for a no-show was simply not a great experience for me. Period. Also, as reported by the owner, I do not recall cancelling two appointments prior to, but I digress. Despite all this, I maintain that Liz is a great stylist and obviously has a cult following. So my review cannot disparage the business or taint the views of current, loyal clientele. Deceptive pricing structure. I went here because it was in the neighborhood and the shop was cute. Reviews were good. I went in for a $60 silk press and somehow ended up being charged for a "hair cut" after she trimmed my ends and I ended up paying over $170. My silk press lasted all of a week, if that. She kept trying to sell me products from the shop when I asked for upkeep advice. It was just a lot. She's super nice and talented but I won't be going back. I stumbled upon Liz thanks to a referral by my hubby and I must say it was the best tip ever... I came to her with my natural hair in dire straits ... my edges were eaten out... my hair wouldn't grow... my natural hair needed despite help... The one thing I remember about our initial consultation was she told me she was more concerned with getting my natural hair back to a healthy state. She took the time to explain what treatments were necessary and basically gave me a plan of action for my hair... As analytical as I am by nature that was a great help... The aesthetic of the salon is very lovely. Based on the owners suggestion she complained about my hair being uneven so she suggested to cut my hair that was past my shoulders and give me a asymmetrical haircut. Short in the back and longer in the front. Based on this hair cut my hair was up to my neck. She flat ironed my hair and it lasted about 3 days. My blowouts usually last a week and a half. So I was not really happy about that. I actually liked the hair cut at first but when my hair started growing back it just grew back so weird. The back of my hair would not stay flat. It took a few months for my hair to not stick up. So the moral of the story never let a complete stranger who does not knows the history of your hair give you a hair cut. My hair grows longer and faster on one side. What I gather from Liz is she is very passionate about hair and hair care however she comes off unknowingly rude. And clearly she is about her money. While your adding in a service she will literally stop you and say this is an add on and it cost that much. When her phone rings she doesn't even exchange pleasantries she goes straight for her fee and if your not ready she hangs up the phone. Let me start by saying that Liz did a great job on my hair. BUT - beware of her pricing structure! Let's put it this way, I went in for a $45 flat iron job and walked out with a $150 bill. BEFORE tip. Somehow a hair trim (she's calling it a cut) and a moisturizing treatment (which was never verified prior to application with me) came up to an extra $105. Now I've had my hair done several times in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Virginia, and elsewhere. NEVER have I ever been charged such an absurd amount for something relatively standard. Pro Tip: make sure to ask pricing before assuming that it'll be within standard local pricing (as I did). Or else you'll be unpleasantly surprised. Her pricing structure smacks a tad bit of deception. Overall, 5 stars for the hair and 2 for pricing Honestly though? This is a long review - so if you don't want to read it, I'll quickly summarize for you - she's an amazing stylist who will slay and lay your hair all goddamn day. Go invest in your hair and see Liz. Picture this - it's the day before NYE, and you know damn well you have a party to go to, yet you over here sleeping on making that appt with your stylist to get your mane looking right. Of course, I kept telling myself that I was gonna find the time to do it myself, but then waited until the day before to "treat myself" to a certified stylist who would slay slay slay the hell out of my hair. Given my once-in-a-while stylist was completely booked, and having to acknowledge the stress behind getting my very dense, semi-long, natural hair done - I spent more than 2 hours reviewing all the stylists in my area on yelp who seemed to specialize in black hair. I called about 5 salons and only 2 had availability for a last minute, same day press. I happily selected Liz based on her glowing reviews. Turns out, I made the right decision. Walked in and the the first thing I noticed was Liz's BEAUTIFUL hair. Like cry to the gods, beg, plead, borrow, and steal... and you still won't have that hair kinda hair. She was giving us some Ms. Ross all day with that hair, hunty. Turns out - it's a wig. SHE CREATES WIGS (that's on my christmas list for next year btw in case anyone wants to make that happen). The next thing you notice is the room full of absolutely stunning black women, all rocking healthy and luscious natural hair. Yaaassss, hunty, yaaaaassssss. Now, her assistants were relaxed, so clearly she caters to all walks of hair - all I do know is that everyone in there was rocking the hell out of their hair. Always a good sign. Then you notice the small set up. One that shows the owner will most likely only be catering to you when its your turn to be in the chair. #winning. Liz gave me a silk press that literally had me in her chair about to weep. She also gave me a healthy trim, and did a quick curl that had me flipping my head all damn night. Also, she made a point about these curls making it easier to wrap my hair at the end of the night. Guess what. Per usual, she was right. Just wrapped my hair in about 3.6 seconds. #stillwinning Do keep in mind - her assistants are in training, so there may be a bit of tugging on your hair when they are detangling. I did ask them to detangle in a certain way as I'm a bit tender headed and they were fully accommodating. At some point, Liz had to step in and finish detangling my hair, which smoothed out the process. Lastly, I thought my price was definitely fair given the amount of hair I have. I was charged $60 + tip for the press and curl. She threw the trim in as a late christmas present I guess, and I'm fully appreciative. I have to say that I'm beyond impressed. I booked an appointment with Sharntai through StyleSeat as I was desperate to get my hair done as soon as possible. I booked on Monday and conveniently set my slot for Wednesday evening after work. Tuesday afternoon, I gave the stylist a call because I wanted to confirm the services that I was receiving and wanted to make sure that I was choosing the right option given on the service list since I am natural and wanted to get a press. Through the call alone, I could tell that Sharntai was very personable. She answered all of my questions and made me feel excited about my appointment even though I was nervous about putting heat on my head after 6 months of no-heat styling. Wednesday comes and I'm running late due to work (of course). I giver the stylist a call and she's patient and understanding (double plus). As I walked in, I felt like I'd been going to Liz Loves Hair for years. From the conversation to the welcome, I felt at home. Sharntai recommended that I get a reconstructive treatment. I've only been in this establishment no more than 3 minutes. I really wish the owner would be a little more selective in who she has servicing others in her place of business. This review is not for Liz but for Stacee Flood. Ms Flood is a talented hair braider. I found out about her through a friend. My only daughter's first birthday is coming up so naturally, I decided to want braids. I booked Ms. Flood via Style seat a week prior for Friday at 6pm. The night before I ended up in the ER with what seemed to be the flu. I tried to cancel but a notification popped up stating that if I complete the LATE cancellation, I'll have to pay $50. That's a bit much BUT I guess that's what you have to do so people will not waste your time, COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD. I do not have money to waste so I contacted Ms. Flood, I kindly asked her if there was anything we can do and I recieved no response. So, naturally, I tried my best to feel better to gain strength to go get my hair done, I arrived to the place on time and I was told that there was someone in my spot!!!! How is there someone in my seat when I didn't cancel my appointment via style seat?????????? So her response was.... "you said that you were canceling!!!"... I never said I was canceling and if she had responded to my text we could've discussed maybe rescheduling etc... but I kept my calm and asked if she took my deposit she said no... LONG STORY SHORT... she did not respond to my msg because not only if I had canceled last minute will I be charged 50bucks BUT if i didn't show up at all (which is what she was hoping) I would've been charged over 100 bucks for the whole hair style! Thank God I showed up... and she's a liar because not 5minutes after I left her vial presence, did I receive an email stating my cancellation!!! LOL she really hoped that I didn't show. That's not how you conduct business. But I remained polite and exited the place. There's always another braider no more than 15min or even BETTER than you! Remain humble sweetie! She saved my badly damaged hair a few years ago and the "temporary" cut I received back in 2011 I've kept all these years due to Sharntai's ability to give a fantastic cut. It completely fits my personality & she was able to size me up immediately...just like any amazing hair stylist should. For almost 2 years now I have been a client of Liz Owusu at LizLovesHair. Liz was recommended to me because I was in a constant struggle with my hair - the transition period from relaxed to natural can mentally and physically challenging. For me to find a new style for my transitioning hair took hours to figure out and days to actually execute because I was so turned off by the amount of time and energy it would take. I was constantly on the run and knew I wanted to keep my hair straight for the most part but without using so many chemicals. I called Liz with the expectations to get a Shea Butter relaxer - she said she didn't think it was the best option for me but said she would advice during our consultation. With one touch of my hair Liz automatically refused to do the Shea Butter relaxer. She assured me that my hair is doing great in it's natural state and suggested that I get a bi-weekly wash, conditioning treatment and blow with her in order to lose chemically damaged ends and welcome elasticity! At my first appointment she even cut my hair! One of the things I did not want to do during by transition phase was to cut off my hair, so depending on the growth of my hair between visit we would do a small cut to remove damaged ends. Coming to Liz and taking her advice to not get the Shea Butter relaxer has been one of the best decisions I could've made for my hair. It's currently at the healthiest it's ever been and I owe it all to her! Not only does she do my natural hair phenomenally, but my weaves as well! For times where I want to switch up my hair style I have Liz do a sewn in for me with minimal leave out. I'm very critical when it comes to weaves and I strongly believe that if you have a weave people should be confused as to if it is your hair or not. Liz's installments have people (even family) guessing all the time! Never do I have lumps, bumps or tracks showing! Overall Liz is one of the best hairstylist I have ever had and I strongly recommend her services for long or short, natural or weave. She makes me feel 100% confident when I walk out of her salon. My first song after every service is "I'm beautiful; it's trueeeee!" I know this was long but one last thing... The ambiance in the shop is another great incentive. The shop is in Bedstuy not far from from the Ralph Ave stop on the A/C line. Such a cute shop! Perhaps an old bakery with classic awnings. Liz has placed mannequin heads showing her work on a shelf running the periphery of the shop. It looks great - both classic and modern! Very experienced stylist. Liz will tell you about her travels to do the fashion shows. I'm pretty picky about hair but am always happy with her work. Typical NYC hair prices - not cheap but reasonable given her good work and level of experience. Liz did an amazing job on my shampoo, trim, and silk press. She made sure to trim all of my dead ends, but did not over cut and was transparent about the trimming process from start to finish. My silk press looked AMAZING - the best I've had since being natural for several years - and it lasted almost two weeks. Best of all, my curls bounced right back after washing, and with my new trim my ends continued to look great and my hair was more manageable. Liz is expensive for a full-service (wash, deep condition, trim, and style) visit but it was worth it and I will definitely return. read more

If you want your hair to be taken cared of, this is a great place to go for great hair styling because of Sharntai. I have fragile relaxed hair and she handles my hair with care alongside with feedback and advice. She is a phenomenal stylist, especially, in cutting hair and treating hair. I have a needy scalp in terms severe dry scalp and Sharntai provided me with a great hair treatment that left me flake/itchy free for a record time of a week and some days! From what I've seen from a distance, Liz does great work as well! This is a great duo and it appears they can handle different hair textures which is always a major plus. I have recommended this salon to others because of the good work and the compliments I receive. I have been to other salons that are similarly priced but they are unable to style, particularly, black hair but their cut and ambiance is of professional level which is of equal value as the hair style I receive. I can not confidently give this salon a 5 star rating although it has potential because of the missing piece of ambiance and experience. For the price, the music they blast out loud in the times I've been there were vulgar and sexually explicit. As a patron, conducting a business transaction (fee for services), this music does not help me relax and it really offensive and makes the money spent not worth it despite the end product. I walk out feeling offended which the cut/style can not negate/balance out. As much as I love the styling by Sharntai I do not think this is enough to keep me coming back. The music choice does not accommodate the different people that frequent this salon, namely children, older people, and Christians (me and others). Genres of music that are less likely to veer towards vulgarity and explicit contents are preferred. As the 4 star rating indicates, when you scroll over them during the rating process, "Yay! I am a fan" of this salon but for now it is not a"Woohoo! As good as it gets!" (5 stars). As mentioned earlier, ambiance and experience is equal to provided service (styling/cut) and so far the styling is ON POINT. The tender love and care given to your hair is what Liz Loves Hair provides, so come with whatever damage and mess you have going on and I am confident they will take care of your hair, I know Sharntai can deliver! read more

I found out about Liz through a friend. She recommended Liz to my husband since he was looking for a way to surprise me with a visit to the salon (awwww). After my first visit, I was hooked! Now, I live in Jersey so it isn't always easy for me to get here but I make the trip and here's why: 1. She knows how to cut! Let me be clear: a lot of stylists are good but they just style. They can give you a trim and you'll be on your merry little way. Liz can SHAPE your hair and knows how to cut ALL hair types and textures. My hair is natural and she trims and shapes it so that whether I get a wash and go or blow it straight, it looks amazing. That is skill, HUNTY! 2. She is big on hair care. Don't come in here thinking she's going to give you what you think you want and then put her name to it like it was her idea. She is also a consultant. If you ask for something and it might be ridiculous, she will say "You sure? Because here is what I think and why." My hair has grown so much since I've been coming and I'm glad for it. 3. You pay for what you get. Some people complain that she is expensive. Yeah, I mean, she's not cheap but what have you bought that was cheap AND good. I'll wait. 4. She is funny as hell. As a New York transplant I must admit I was a little hesitant to walk into just any salon to get my hair done so I finally decided to give Liz a try I saw the pics and read the reviews and I liked what I saw. So now to my experience. Upon first entrance Liz was extremely warm and friendly she apologized for running behind schedule and told me she would be done in a few, I waited which was fine. I didn't have any plans afterwards ... (Side Note ladies when going to get your hair done I would aways leave 1-2hrs of buffer time just incase the appoitemt runs over this always ensures I'm never in a rush to get my hair done and makes the hair salon experience a lot more pleasant) when it was my turn to get my hair washed and styled I loved the fact she took time to look at my hair before she just sat me at the shampoo bowl. At the bowl she took her time in washing my hair and when in the chair to get styled, she styled my hair beautifully and even cut me bangs ( I had attempted to cut my own bangs earlier glad she help fix it lol) overall my experience was lovely the only negative wld be that it is quite pricey the wash and the bang trim was 70 which caught me a little off guard (was hoping to only spend 55) but if your pockets can afford it I wld definitely recommend her :) read more

I have been trying to find a stylist here in New York that I'm comfortable with, can trust, and that I like, and I have finally found her! Liz really does love hair. She was courteous and punctual, not that 'sit in this chair wait for me while I gab about unrelated shit.' I came in for a shampoo blow and flat iron, and Liz noticed my colored hair could use a moisturizing treatment. The shampoo and treatment are amazing! The minty tingling of the shampoo was so relaxing and the steam moisturizer even cleared some pores! (Extra bonus.) Once I got in the chair and she blow dried me, she let me know that she thought I could use a trim. I was super nervous and Liz and I talked it out and finally came to a resolution: I was going to cut some then and some when I came back for my weave. (Yes after the shampoo, I was already sold on having her weave me up.) She took a photo of my hair before and once she showed me the cut results, I told her to do the whole thing. Can I just tell yall that my hair looks a million times healthier and THIS BOUNCE. YAAASSSS. anyway. I told Liz that I wanted to grow my hair and be able to not weave it up anymore. She told me that my hair has that potential and she would be more than willing to help my hair get there. Liz treated me like a friend not just a client. She was engaging, fun and personable. "Patient" Its hard to describe Liz in one word but I think I settled on "patient". There are clearly other words that came to mind; caring, talented, goddess-of-hair. But for me, her patience is what kept me sane. I came to Liz after looking for a stylist for my wedding. I wanted an extreme change during a stressful time. I wanted lighter hair and a weave that matches my natural curl; both are styles that I never tried. I did not follow the adage, "brides should never make any extreme changes right before their wedding". Anyway, the experience was emotional, "I hate it!", "I think I kinda like it...", "I don't even know what I want anymore!". Through it all Liz kept on doing her thing. I'll definitely be returning. I booked a shampoo and silk press via Styleseat. Liz was very well versed in hair care, and I also got a trim and hydrate (steam) treatment. This is looooonnng overdue! Liz is a great hair stylist. She is very knowledgable about hair, how to keep it healthy and maintenance. I got a trim and treatment my first visit back in April because I had pretty bad split ends. No lie, my hair has not had many if any split ends since and I'm pretty sure it has grown a couple of inches. It's moisturized and my curls are popping! She told me that I was probably using products that were counterproductive for my hair and she was right! She recommended a new line of products and regimen and I haven't looked back since. I've been traveling from Jersey to BK faithfully for years and I won't ever trust anyone with my hair again. She specializes in all hair types. She has worked with my relaxed hair and now is helping me go natural through a full install. I love Liz! Liz has been doing my hair for the past year and I am extremely happy with it. During the Winter and Spring, I had a few full weaves installed. She helped repair my natural hair that was damaged. Each style looked fantastic and natural. I was constantly getting compliments on my hair. For the Summer, Liz custom made a wig for me. I couldn't be happier. I asked for Beyoncé beach hair, and that's exactly what I got. The style is comfortable and easy to care for. I am thrilled to use Liz for my main stylist because she actually listens to what I want. She can be a little pricy, but it's totally worth it for great styles and healthy glowing hair. read more
