I have been going to Jhavaunna since 2017 and have had both my parents bask in her talent! I just had to post after having multiple ppl comment on my hair after my post holiday/pre travel visit. My hair is silky, hydrated, and a web for compliments and curiosity! My trim did not compromise the overall length and brought out the movement and beauty of my hair. Jhavaunna was also nice enough to pin curl my hair to protect it from the Wizard of Oz wind that awaited me outside! She was time efficient and the ease and speed of her styling reflects her high level of skill. She also listens to all my stories without judgment (but with laughter and enthusiasm without needing to patronizingly agree) so I gladly travel 1000+ miles for her skill. This is not your lil friends hair shop. This is a Grown woman with over 20 years of professional experience who really knows what she's doing, loves her craft and how to take great care of hair. So the story is I booked her but didn't like the price she gave me to buy tracks/bundles for a weave I wanted. So I went and bought my own hair (cheaper) for the appointment. Big mistake . Jhavuanna schooled me on how my kinky 3c hair texture needed to match the hair when straightened and how full the hair was that she had in comparison to mine which tapered off at the ends. She explained it to me in a way that helped me understand how to make future purchases, not just tell me what I do and don't need. So of course I ended up making the investment in this hair, but for the look! It was worth it. I got a 20 inch weave with a good amount of Leaveout but enough for it to be a protective style. I'm natural for over 10 years with shoulder length hair and like natural looking styles, both pressed and curly. I am not a fan of lace fronts with all those edges ( to each her own) and my stylist gave me a very very real-looking pressed & curled style that matched my preferences. Even my close friends didn't know it was a weave until I posted a video about it. The Cambodian hair I have was well worth the price, reusable, and Has been holding up pretty well over the past few weeks. I wore this hair for a wedding and trip to Nigeria and though my own hair sweated out a few times, this hair always looked well blended from me tying it up. I made sure to not apply too much heat but it does great with a flat iron touch up and sheds very little. Will be back and highly recommend! read more

I'm so in LOVE with my October Glory Custom Unit(s)!! I had no idea a custom unit could look and feel so natural; but I've seen the GLORY!! For years, I wore a partial weave and occasionally a full sew in-- but now for the last couple of years, I've rotated between a couple of custom units made especially for me by Jhvaunna. She has full artistic freedom and always creates a unit that's perfect for me ---- from the cut to the color... it's just perfect! It's obvious that she puts a lot of care and thought into the unit but she equally continues to treat my natural hair. I have A LOT of hair and she always takes great care of my natural hair. She gives me treatments, trims my hair and makes sure I'm using the shampoo and conditioner that's best for my texture! Jhavuanna has done a beautiful job helping to maintain and grow my hair. I've been seeing her for a little over 2 years now, and I've gotten several things done. Her deep conditioning treatments are to die for, my hair is always so soft. I usually do my own hair, but can never get it as soft as she does. I got a customized wig from her that SO MANY PEOPLE complimented and thought was my hair. Lol. I love her flat twist sets and my hair always looks so pretty after. And her presses are really good-- your hair will be straight, bebe! Jhavuanna is also just a really warm person and easy to talk to and be around. She's truly down to earth and despite having an ever growing and famous clientele-- she treats everyone with kindness and like you're important. Her shop is clean and well maintained and you'll feel comfortable while getting your service. Let me start by saying, she does hair beautifully, I don't want this rating to be a judgement of her styling but of her customer service which is beyond awful. I'm not a prospective client, I've had my hair done by her on multiple occasions and she is not cheap by any standards nor is it cheap for me to get there because I live out of state. The first appointment I've ever had with her, she arrived late, I was standing on Ralph Ave before the salon was even open waiting on her. This last appointment I had with her was the final straw, she had to cancel (morning of the appointment) because of a health emergency-which I understand. After the cancellation, I wanted to get an idea of what to bring (how many bundles, etc) and which process would be best to get the hairstyle I want-she just stopped communicating during this time. I've spent over $1K getting my hair done by this woman and that's the level of respect she gives an actual client. I've never complained about her prices, about her lateness on the 1st meeting, etc. I wish her luck but I'll never spend another dime trekking out to Brooklyn or recommend her as a stylist. read more

I am in love! I recently went to another salon in Brooklyn that had okay ratings but was wayyy cheaper. Once she left Oakland and moved to Brooklyn, I had no problem stopping by whenever I was in town or flying to get my weaves done by her. What I love about her is that she is sweet and down to earth, but is a genius--highly knowledgeable about all things hair! Even body hair as she is a skilled with wax as well. She is a skilled master stylist and is the perfect blend of scientist and artist. Once she gets her hands in your hair, it's like watching a ballerina float on air. She understands chemically how hair behaves, and the science to be able to manipulate it to do whatever she wants it to do. She understands all hair types, not just ethnic hair. She can give cornrows with intricate designs, two strand twist with ridiculous definition, give you the blowout of your life, correct a messed up color job or weave you up till you look like Beyoncé in the wind! She is just that damn good! When I decided to go natural, she was supportive and taught me how to care for and style my hair with little to no heat damage. When she does my weaves, they look natural!! People literally compliment me on how long, thick and luxurious my hair is! Also her weaves allowed my natural hair to grow to mid-back length! Hair cuts! I've been to Jhavuanna a number of times for a silk press and also a custom unit. She is extremely talented and my hair always comes out amazing and naturally beautiful when I go to her. She is always very professional, timely, and if there is a conflict in her schedule (but this has only happened once since I have gone to her) she will let you know and try to accommodate you as best as she can. She also cares about the health of her customer's hair and will give you tips on how to maintain each style. I highly recommend her if you are in the NYC area. Love my new wig! This is the first wig that is not over-filled with hair (making it look fit for an entertainer) or off-colored (making it look unprofessional). This wig has just the right amount of hair so you can wear it for numerous occasions and looked pulled together, not garish. I also love that it's comfortable to wear and fits securely on my head without combs digging into the sides of my head. The hair doesn't shed like other wigs and the lace doesn't snag my hair as I put it on or take it off. This is a high-quality unit. Mind you, it doesn't come cheap, but in my opinion it is worth every penny in terms of time saved on trips to the salon, ease of maintenance and long term wearability. My hair is securely cornrowed under my unit, so there's nothing I need to do with my hair daily except to keep it moisturized and clean. I go to Jhavuanna for trims and when I'm ready to weave it up for protective styles (when I want to give my hair a break and let it grow). She will help me attain the look I want all while maintaining the utmost protection for my hair. This is my very first yelp review. Jhavuanna has magic fingers, she made my daughter first big chop very comfortable and it came out great with many compliments from her peers. As for my cut, she is the first stylist to get my hair the way I've always wanted it to be done but no one else was capable of getting it right. Incredibly overpriced, quoted one thing and then ended up paying another price.

Mislead. $150 later my daughter's hair was a SMELLY/ Bush for her bday.  Price quoted was $85 for a SILK PRESS. When my daughter is at the sink to be washed, I am told $145.  When I questioned the additional cost it was for a haircut that 'MAY' be needed. No conditioning treatment ..NOTHING. Quick shampoo, blow dried, flat ironed, then trimmed. I had this service done a year ago at close a vicinity. I paid less for SO much more.. including advice for natural hair care regime/products. It lasted two weeks (wrapping hair everynight) This silk press lasted half a day and smelled so burnt. Regular blowouts  last longer. You guys were very nice/pleasant but ...Wow read more

It was my first time visiting Fabstylist and Jhauvanna made my experience the very best ever. I have been to salons where you spend so much time and money and have to fight for the stylists attention to do your hair amongst other clients as well as battle their tudes like theyre doing you a favor. Not the case here at all, J was super attentive and made you feel valued and comfortable throughout the process. I've been coloring my hair for years and tried many different stylists from neighborhood saloons to high end saloons. I was never completely satisfied with the outcome of my hair color, so I decided to stop coloring my hair. A year or so went by and I wanted to color it again. So I did a ton of research to find someone to color it. I came across Jhavuanna on Yelp and decided to give her a try about 3 weeks ago. BEST DECISION EVER!!!!! She was so professional and knowledgeable about the process. She was sweet and easy to talk to. She really listened to what I wanted done and let me know how I could achieve the look I was going for. She was attentive the entire time. She let me know everything she was doing why she was doing it. She didn't push any other services on me and there were no surprise cost either like I've experienced at other saloons. My hair looked amazing. It wasn't hard or dry. I started off with just about black hair and she took me all the way to blond with great highlights. After the long process my hair looks so healthy. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Some may think the prices are excessive but if your accustomed to having your hair colored in the manner I do you know it's right on par. I had a great 1st experience with Jhavuanna at Fabstylist. Prior to seeing her she responded to all my emails about my questions and concerns for my hair needs in quick manner. When I arrived at the salon, I felt very comfortable. Jhavuanna explained and gave me suggestions of what I could get done throughly. As I was getting my hair done, she also explained what she was putting in my hair and why, step by step. Jhavuanna is very professional and friendly as well as the other stylists there. I love what Jhavuanna has done to my hair!! My appointment was for 2:30pm on a Sunday. She started at 2:38, fantastic! I was greeted with a warm smile and she asked me if I had a picture of exactly how I wanted my sew-in done. Jhavuanna began braiding my hair with small, neat, braids and periodically checked in to make sure they weren't too tight, they weren't. She used a net to secure my hair and further lay a flat foundation for the sew-in. Jhavuanna took her time to sew down my closure neatly, and not too tight. Within about 2.5-3 hours, my sew in was complete (closure and 2 bundles of hair), and definitely not rushed, she is just very experienced and can obviously do this with her eyes closed. Jhavuanna cut my hair with professional tools (i pay attention to things like this), into fringe bangs and soft layers around. Today i am at work with my new do and receiving compliments left and right. Yesterday was my first time meeting Jhavuanna and I must say it was a great experience, which doesn't usually go hand in hand with visiting a hair salon on the weekend... If I could give this woman 100 stars I would. I don't often post on YELP but when I do it's either really bad or really good. Jhavuanna is a hair GODDESS!! Today was my first time going to get my hair done by her. I called her in the morning and although extremely booked she accommodated me. When I walked in the salon it was the usual Saturday bustle, she greeted me very nicely. I could see that she was extremely busy but again she managed to fit me in while she was washing, styling, wrapping, weaving (yes she does it all). Anyway I got a partial weave, my sides and nape are cut low. I was worried because the hair that I brought with me was still damp from coloring and washing it. She was like "I still smell the color in the hair, I'm going to re-wash it and dry it"!! WOW!! Most stylists would have been like "whatever". She even made sure that the hair that wasn't mine was taken care of. Her braids are neat and concise, her weaving technique is sick!!! No lumps or bumps! SHE LISTENS to what you want!! She's personable and sweet, a consummate professional. She tells you how much it is prior to sitting down. Remember you get what you pay for and Jhavuanna is worth it!! read more

I cannot say enough kind things about Jhavuanna and my October Glory unit. I am IN LOVE with it and cannot walk past a reflective surface without stopping to look at myself first!! My unit looks so natural, and Jhavuanna took the time to listen to my needs and execute them perfectly. I told her I had never had color in my hair before but wanted to try, and she gave me the most incredible subtle chocolate highlights throughout.
