This man has done more for me than he'll know. I've been covering up my natural hair with wigs and weaves for the better part of 8 years. I've never been confident in my own skin and it's been tearing me apart. I've been growing out my natural hair for about 6 months without any sort of treatments (no relaxers, no heat). On a whim, I decided to go to Daryle solely based off of his yelp reviews, and I was so insanely pleased with my experience. I got a hair cut with shampoo and conditioning. His assistant did the washing and blow drying. She really took her time with me and payed close attention to my needs. I haven't been to a salon in years and I don't apply heat to my hair, so the blow out was a little much for me. I didn't have to say a word, she sensed I was uncomfortable so she simply turned down the heat and worked a little more slowly. I really appreciated that! Then came Daryle. I don't know what kind of magical flat iron he has, but he transformed my naturally nappy hair into something that was so sleek and edgy (four days later and my hair is still perfectly straight). The best part is that it still feels so healthy! Normally when I apply a ton of heat, my hair gets really stringy and gross. When Daryle went in, my hair came out soft, fluffy and totally alive. Words don't do it justice. Pictures don't do it justice. Everything was insanely perfect. Best $150 I've spent in a while. Also, the man's personality is completely fabulous. I've been to Daryle twice so far and both times have been a great experience! I've gotten a shampoo, deep conditioner, reconstructive treatment, and a blowout. He and his assistant really take their time with you, and even when business gets hectic it never feels like they're rushing you around. I'd say always make an appointment though if you can! He's a real nice guy who can hold a nice conversation with you and give you great tips for your hair without being pushy or self-righteous (as some stylists can be!). Came to NY for a friends bday and desperately needed my hair done. I called Daryle the day before I arrived and asked for a Friday appt. To my surprise he took me. Overall the experience was not bad. He was nice and his assistant was very caring. During the washing process, the assistant was gentle and took her time to detangle my hair. I enjoy her service. I had to wait about 3 hours to finally get to Daryle's chair (but I guess it's understandable because my appt was last minute). Daryle did an OK job straighten my hair. He used oil while flat ironing the hair, which left it a little stiff. But I appreciated the oil because I knew he wasn't frying the hell out of my hair. He didn't style it much, which left me a tad disappointed. The flatiron lasted about a week. I got a wash, deep condition, and flat iron. That came to $100. It was my first time getting my hair washed and a blowout by Daryle Bennett and it was worth it... He was very friendly and gentle with my hair when washing and blow drying. I liked the fact that I did not have to wait a long time to get my hair styled. My time is precious and do not want to be in a hair salon for more than an hour to get my hair styled. I was really excited to get an appointment with Daryle after reading all of the positive reviews here on Yelp. I called and spoke directly with him after my regular salon canceled on me last minute. I confirmed that I wanted an Affirm relaxer and a trim and was quoted $120. I bought the Yelp deal - $115 for $150 of services because I also wanted to get a deep conditioner. My initial experience at the salon was pretty good. Nice reception area, his assistant brought me a robe and some water. Daryle was on-time and not double or triple booked. He was also very personable and easy to talk to. So far, so good. I got relaxed with a 10 minute condition under the dryer after. Daryle then blew my hair out, trimmed it and flat ironed it. Ok, great. The problems started when I went to pay. Daryle told me that it was $80 additional for a cut. I said I didn't ask for a cut, I asked for a trim. He then had the nerve to tell me that any time he picked up his scissors, it was $80 regardless of if it was a cut or a trim. Now, I came in with a pretty blunt cut and bangs. I left with the same thing. No layers, nothing exciting. He basically just took off an inch all the way around. I paid the difference after letting him know that it was outrageous because there is no sense making a scene in a beauty salon. I left very disappointed, especially since I had already committed to coming back in a few weeks for $200 highlights. He should have apologized for the misunderstanding and at least offered to split the difference. But whatever, it is just called no tip. I woke up this morning and checked my hair out in the sunlight. I have A TON of split ends which I mentioned time and time again during our appointment. I told him I was very concerned that I kept finding 1/2" bits of hair with tree-like split ends on them. He assured me my hair was super healthy and he didn't notice anything like that. I have the little white bulbs at the ends of my hair where there was new breakage that he didn't cut off. So I didn't even end up with a proper trim after all of that. I had to spend about an hour doing a thorough search and destroy this morning. UPDATE: The right side of my hair is about 1.5" shorter than the left!!! He should have paid me $80 for this butcher job. All in all, the relaxer is fine. Nothing earth shattering. Was what I got worth $120? Maybe. Worth $200? Definitely not. Either way, I certainly won't be going back to Daryle. He lost me as a repeat customer when he price gouged me. read more

Daryle is a true professional, a wonderful communicator and loves what he does. I am so happy that I found him on Yelp. The staff in the reception area were pleasant and welcoming. Everyone greeted me. All of the stylist (whom I witnessed) appeared happy to be there and no one seemed to have a chip on their shoulder, which you sometimes encounter is "black" salons. Daryle listened to my hair issues, asked appropriate questions to clarify my description of what I liked and didn't like and he even probed a little into my personal life (like what I do for a living). Found Daryle on Yelp after having a difficult time finding a reliable salon in the city with a flexible schedule. I called on Wednesday and was able to make an appointment for that Saturday...which is pretty unheard of. Once I got to the salon, there was zero wait. Again, pretty unheard of. And they had someone on staff offering pizza slices to patrons because it was around lunch time. Don't know if that's a regular thing, but it was a pretty solid representation of how friendly everyone is here. Daryle himself was friendly, funny, knowledgable, and started our appointment by really listening to my hair history (read: all the dumb damage I'd done to it thus far) as well as what I wanted out of this appointment. I really hadn't been taking care of it and it was a dry, frizzy, partially-relaxed mess. I'm half black, half English so my hair leaves a lot of stylists frustrated and confused. Daryle promised he'd make sure I left the salon feeling like a new woman. He checked in with me throughout the appointment to make sure I knew what was going on and that we were both on the same page in terms of how he was cutting/styling. Most hair stylists end up chopping inches off when you've got split ends, but Daryle actually listened to my request that I was trying to keep it a similar length. We found a good length for bangs and he was able to get my hair looking incredible without an onslaught of greasy hairsprays. So happy with how it came out. It's soft, straight, shiny and I look a lot less like Don King. I've gotten relaxer/haircuts that were less expensive, but for how I felt leaving the appointment it was totally worth the cost. Absolutely amazing job! I was able to call for a same-day appointment mid-day on a Friday. The shop is on the 2nd floor and has a lot of chairs/stylists working there. All the reviews are accurate. I came in for a wash/blow dry/flat iron job and was in and out in less than 1.5 hours. Daryle was amazing from start to finish and didn't have any other clients so I had his full attention and he has some amazing travel stories that keep you entertained the whole time. Daryle is a stylist within the Hair by Joseph salon, and I just saw him yesterday in order to fix the highlights that I received at another salon that did not process long enough, thus didn't really show up. First and foremost Daryle was very friendly and welcoming, even when I was a smidgen late (coming from work), and had made a very last minute appt through Lifebooker. He gave a great consult, and, unlike the other salon I went to, there was no rush and my color was allowed to really process. He is really great. I got a perm from him. I was just getting a touch up not a full virgin perm. I felt like my hair was actually being treated with care. My hair feels and looks great. He was willing to answer my questions and give advice about how to take care of my hair even if I don't go to him the next time around. I really appreciated that.
