Shopped here at the recommendation of a friend as it has Hispanic products. I was looking for green…read morebananas and plantains as well as other items normally found in Hispanic neighborhoods. Extra seems to have a big selection of African, Haitian and Hispanic products. They have a great selection of root vegetables. Prices were low, store neat and stocked, but this is where the good ends. The neighborhood is very questionable. I kept seeing police activity everywhere while trying to find this supermarket. The meat was also questionable. I made the mistake of picking up a pork shoulder that looked better than the rest. Smelled it and it seemed fine. Once I got home and removed the packaging, it smelled funky, as if it was going bad and someone tried cleaning it with a chemical. I threw it out. I never shopped in this type of neighborhood before nor in an Extra supermarket. Next time I'll just travel to ShopRite a half mile away for what I need. I'm new to a neighborhood that borders Orange, East Orange and Irvington. I'm finding that the supermarkets are subpar. I need to travel outside of my area for quality meat. For root vegetables and non perishables, I may make the once a year trip here. Maybe.

Its proximity to some bad areas of Newark/Irvington is possibly why they say that poorer depressed areas have poor nutrition. Walk a few more blocks to City grocery which is also pretty ghetto, but has a lot better products and selection and the produce is decent. Anyone who drives would never make this a justifiable place to shop. Better yet, head over to Stop and Shop in South Orange or to the nearest Shop Rite for way better food.

This would be produce, fish, Goya line, rice, beans. Like other grocers, it will not be rock bottom on every single item. Not the place for cold cereal, pasta, or non-food items. Outstanding value of frozen whiting fish, greens, legumes, canned fish. The cashiers are a mixed bunch. A few are cordial and professional, while some should not be dealing with the public. Some of the customers obviously grew up without parents, as one woman who cut the line without even asking. The temerity of us to raise an objection. Another customer topped her, by using the cashier as a price checker, then going back to the isles to exchange while we waited. No less than six times. Well, it's her world, I was so thankful to be living in it. Also, note: the store will shut entrance doors fifteen minutes before closing. The security guard is a nice guy. Also, I believe the Mill Rd. store is the smallest of City's, in terms of square footage. I drove by the Elizabeth store, and it looked considerably larger. In conclusion: I would shop this store for certain items, and go early to avoid large check-out lines, that move at a snails's pace.
