Leaving Bellevue it was sunny, but quickly changed to rain, thunder, and lightning. Arrived at the location, signs indicated that they were Open, but a young man greeted us with the news that because of the weather they closed early. My wife explained that we had just driven out from Newcastle; her namesake flowers were her favorite, and she's a City Councilmember! Besides, the rain had stopped and it was clearing! A quick call to the owner resulted in permission to walk out through the gardens, livestock, chickens, and braying burros--at no charge!! Various types of sunflowers available for viewing, but quite a walk out to the currently blooming acreage! Lots of areas still growing for future displays this fall. Lots of photo ops with the setting sun and sunlight playing on area hillsides behind multitudinous Sunflowers! Looks like a fun place, with Shave Ice and Weiner World SuperFantastic Hot Dogs! I'm sure even more fun stuff when the weather cooperates! Thanks to the Lora Lee Family for their kindness! (I'm going to have to come back out for a WW SF Hot Dog!!)

To get here from Seattle you have to take the Fauntleroy ferry to Vashon Island but we headed there pretty early in the morning and we had no problems getting onto the ferry with our car (On the way back from Vashon however, we saw a bunch of people heading to Vashon in the afternoon. The ferry line for vehicles was crazy backed up, so I would not recommend going too late!) After arriving at Vashon, it's about 20 or so minutes to the Lavender Hill Farm. This place is super cute! From what I could observe, it looks like a beautiful private residence with its own little giant farm attached. What made this place stand out from the rest is that there were so many varieties of lavender that I had never heard of before. They had some interns there, helping to pick lavender and make bouquets/wreaths who did a great job of educating us on the different types of smelling lavender and cooking lavender. They also had a bunch of premade lavender products. Personally, I always go for the little lavender bags and use them in my laundry -- they last forever, and they smelled great. They had these scented roller balls each with a different type of lavender, it smelled absolutely amazing. If I am remembering correctly, there were also lotions, balms, incense, even pre-cut cooking lavender, and I believe there was even lavender soda for sale. I was able to purchase everything easily using contactless pay. I believe I had a conversation with the owner of the farm (not 100% on that though) and she was quite lovely. This place is dog friendly as you can see from my pictures, however, they also have a farm dog of their own so just be mindful of that. If you love to Instagram, or taking pictures, this place is definitely for you -- and if you like lavender, of course, you should definitely come here! It seems like their season has already ended so I'm guessing it's open for a very short window in the early summer, but if you have the opportunity to go next summer, I would recommend it!

My wife, Peggy, and I started this farm back in 2009 after our 1st visit to Sequim in 2008. Well looking over the bright purple fields and seeing all the happy bees and happy people surrounding lavender, we thought maybe we could bring this same feeling to Olympia. Since we had a 4 acre piece of property, and I didn't want to mow it all the time, we were looking for something unique for people to come and enjoy. Peggy did a lot of research and tried to find a grower that had plants that would survive in this area. We settled on Lavender at Stonegate from Silverton, Oregon. Sarah, was amazing and she turned us on to 12 beautiful varieties of lavender. We mostly grow True English lavenders but we also have hybrids, that are known for their size, scent and oil content. Our English variety, Royal Velvet, is extremely popular with cooks, distillers, bakers and chocolatiers. Our hybrid lavender's, or lavandins, are used for large bouquets and for their aromatic essential oil. We steam-distill many of our plants here on the property. They have been acclaimed to be some of the very best essential oils that people have ever used. Peggy fills our gift shoppe with body soothing products and lovely sachets, eye pillows and warmable neck wraps. We think the best thing about coming to our farm, is that people can escape the rigors of city life and sit back and just relax.

The park has a paved path with lots of trees & flowers. There's even a HUGE 3-story playground! That was the biggest playground I've ever seen! There was also a smaller playground for little ones. This is a free farm but there was a cute mailbox accepting donations. I don't think anyone was working when we went on a Saturday. You can also have your birthday party here which is so fun for animal lovers! They even offer classes where people of all ages, from school age to adults can learn how to care for the animals which is so cool! The market is clean, well organized, and even has clean public restrooms, which is always appreciated. One of the highlights of my visit was Perkins Family Farms. I had the pleasure of meeting Llewyn Merrill, the sales manager, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. He freshly shucked oysters for us right on the spot for only $3 each, and there was no minimum order. The oysters were fresh, delicious, and definitely worth trying. We also picked up several baked goods, including the cheese bread and a plain croissant, both of which were very good. The cheese bread had great flavor, although it was a little chewy, likely because it had been baked earlier that morning. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at the Olympia Farmers Market. There was an impressive selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, berries, mushrooms, seafood, flowers, local crafts, and other unique products. The friendly vendors and welcoming atmosphere made this an enjoyable visit from start to finish. I highly recommend stopping by, especially to visit Perkins Family Farms for their outstanding fresh oysters and excellent customer service. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Olympia!

They had a pretty good selection of food vendors on a Sunday night, and we ended up getting a banh mi each from Friendly Nettle, and a dozen oysters for me from Moonlight Oysters. Food came out quick, after which we found a seat out near the sunflowers. I really enjoyed my pork banh mi -- it's more of a pork sausage than a grilled pork, but it was really tasty with great bread and stuffed full with pickled shredded veg and cilantro. My dinner buddy found that he wasn't a huge fan of tempeh in a banh mi but still found it a satisfying meal. The oysters were also delicious. They were serving up the Aphrodite variety that night, which were petite shots of mineral-y goodness. After dinner and a stroll through the grounds, we got some delicious vegan ice cream at Fiddlehead creamery. We loved their strawberry flavor and were excited at how all the flavors are vegan here! Keep in mind if you're thinking of visiting Finnriver that even for this area the food vendors close early here (like 7-7:30ish). If you want to eat, make sure you come out on the earlier side!

You can find them at various farmers markets throughout the state, but you can also now find them at the relatively new Woodinville farm. This smaller farm serves as a base of operations for Puget Sound. But it is a working farm, and the Tonnemaker grow many vegetables right here. Cucumbers (when they are in season) are also available as you pick here. The farm stand sells the produce from both Woodinville and Royal City. It's open a couple days of the week in the early season, then moves to a seven day a week schedule as the season progresses. Everything here is fresh and organic--and delicious! And the staff is helpful and friendly. You can't go wrong stopping at this farm and farm stand.
