oh my yrs back this place felt like they were on to something. my experiences as a senior with short hair i get it hard to begin the process. the loctician i worked with just took money monthly instead of just saying u need more growth. i paid dearly only to sleep that night and the unravels began soooo i stopped going after a while. no one followed up as to why and yeah im good went ole school locs coming back now thanks to Mother earth and sunlight ! ha read more

Update on December 9, 2023 This is me updating my previous 2-star to a 5-star. Within minutes of my leaving the review, the owner contacted me and we spoke by phone. At first, I was hesitant because of too many bad experiences with businesses here in SoCal who get defensive. Everything is your fault or "too bad, so sad." But something told me to keep an open mind and I'm glad I did. She was incredibly gracious. In the call, she invited me back to the shop so I could get my interlocs tightened properly. Initially, I said no, due to the drive. But again, she had positive vibes and I really do want to like this shop. It's in a cool spot on Melrose with artsy energy, dope music, and it's gorgeous inside. Jazz did not disappoint. The second trip was far better than the first. She greeted me when I walked in, which did not happen on my first visit. The first time, I was wondering who my stylist was and after several minutes, I had to get up and ask somebody. But Jazz was engaging, friendly, and also efficient with the needlework. Below are the photos for before and after. Mostly, I just won't leave the review and will move on. But I had such high hopes for this place that I visited in a pinch before leaving for Vegas. Hopefully, this review will help Ladrea to work on time management. It was a serious problem that day. Fine, that happens in all shops at times, but she was rushing so hard my locs now look like they're three months old instead of just one month. My loctitian was Ladrea and maybe she was just having a day, maybe it was the last-minute nature of the appointment (I made it online, and the time slots had her as available). I went for a wash and tightening of my interlocks. I made clear in the notes for the appointment that my last tightening had been six months prior, so she could reasonably estimate the hours this would require. When I got there, she told me it would be a 20-minute wait. I was cool with that. But then her next appointment after me showed up about 2.5 to 3 hours into the job and she still had quite a bit of head left to loc on me. She really had to rush to get through it, and she told the next person she would be about half an hour late. Ordinarily, it takes about 6-7 hours because I go a long time. Ladrea got it done in 4. The wash was so-so. Very light. Didn't mess with my scalp, just the hair at the root. Had I known she wouldn't really get into my scalp, I would have deep-washed it myself beforehand. The description said the appointment came with a wash so I did not. They looked okay when I left the chair; not necessarily impressive but fine. But later that week, I found a loc in the very front that wasn't completely finished. Since then, I've found other locs she only halfway interlocked. Hairs were flying everywhere on the locs; normally, other locticians clean them up by wrapping them around or snipping them. Other locticians also add gel or product for a smooth, polished finish, and oil so they're glistening. This time, they were really rough. A month later, I am having to cave in early and contact one of my previous loctitians to request an emergency appointment. None of them were available a month ago; that's why I tried Locafella. I haven't gone for a tightening this soon since I first started locs. My locs have never looked this raggedy a month after the job. Never. They normally keep their luster for the first month to 6 weeks, and even after that, I can work with them for another six weeks to have them looking presentable. This is disappointing. On top of that, I tipped a respectable rate. The photos and reviews for this shop looked amazing. I'm not saying I'll never try this place again but I live in Torrance. That's a drive. read more

I really wanted to love this place, and I'm very hesitant to share such a low review of a Black Owned shop, but I really wish Locafella respected the time of their clients more. My first time here I had come from a color appointment so freshly washed and needed retwists. I had booked online with a stylist and was ready. I generally do my own retwists 1x a month so my hair is in pretty good shape. The stylist was no where near done with the previous client so after waiting about 30-40 minutes I was shuffled to another stylist, Christina. She did a nice job and although I only get professionally retwisted every few more the instead of doing my own, I kept her card to use her next time. I booked online, (with a deposit) but come day of the appointment Christina texted me to say she was running 45 mins late. I really appreciated this as I have a tight schedule and after a little back and forth we decided to reschedule for next month. No big deal and I had a big event coming up that it would be best to have fresh locs for. I explained again I woukd be coming from a color appointment so didn't need a wash or anything, just a retwist. I walked in today exactly on time to find the stylist maybe a little over 1/2way done with their previous client. No text to say she was running behind. What exactly is the point of online booking with a deposit if no one is going to adhere to it? I've put down money because I respect the stylist time to as for a deposit to keep the appointment. Why can I not get the same respect to keep that appointment. 45 mins into my scheduled time I just asked them to return my deposit and cancelled. I won't be back. It's really disappointing that I'm not able to leave a positive review, but I'm sitting here doing my own hair much later than I planned because respect isn't a two way street anymore. read more

I have very soft hair so it is a process and each time she must do a protected style until everything "buds". I appreciate her willingness to try new updos and listen to an old lady for hours while she neatly and professionally does my hair. The shop is neat, the music is not too loud, nor are there folks on speaker phone () thankfully. Get it done right, not fast. Unfortunately, I did not have a great experience with Locafella, especially because I was looking forward to the appointment after reading all the great reviews. This was my first time trying them out as I'm not in LA often. I booked an appointment with a stylist that many ppl recommended on Yelp. The day of the appointment, she had to reschedule for the end of the next day, not a big deal. When I arrived, she was not done with her previous client, so I waited for almost 30 min. She did a little bit of work on my hair, but didn't get so far because I'm tender-headed and it was getting late. She recommended that I come in again within thirty days, and she would try interlocking, free of charge. I agreed, as my hair looked fine at the moment, and I would just come in again soon. Well, about two weeks later, I reached out to schedule a follow-up appointment, and she was out of town. She didn't know when she would be back, and said she would keep me posted. By this point, my hair really started to get messy as the previous session wasn't holding up. I sent a follow-up message a week later, but no response. I tried one last time after the 30 days had passed, but that didn't work out either. It's just a little frustrating because we rescheduled and started late, leaving little time to work on my hair, and then the stylist didn't follow up with the appointment she offered. Now my hair doesn't look so great only a month later, and I feel like I wasted my money. read more

The only thing I gotta get accustomed to is the Prices because the east coast it's fairly cheaper but I guess that's what it's like living in LA. I've gotten my locs retwisted using icy, Paige, and Nia. All were good and specialized in different things. I booked a passion twist Style and didn't get that. After sitting in a chair for 11 hours and the stylist failing to communicate that she couldn't do the style I walked out of the salon with a style in my hair that my 9 year old niece could've done a lot better at on her first try. I reached out to the stylist and instead of holding herself accountable and admitting that she didn't know how to do the style she blamed it on the type of hair used and my hair texture. Here's the kicker I also do hair, and I've done this style on several clients (all with different hair texture) and none of their hair turned out like mine. I was told that another stylist would be able to do it but the owner (who I was communicating with throughout the day) never responded with a time. There are a lot of talented stylist in this salon I recommend triple checking that when you book with Jackie she can actually do the style you're requesting. read more

First I want to say the Locafella is pretty cool. Growing up listening to Jayz and Rocafella I immediately put together the two. Anyways onto the review. I was referred to the loctician Nubia through a friend. She was able to get me in under short notice. When I asked for the location of the shop and she said Melrose, I a little overwhelmed with that being a busy area but when I arrived I was able to find parking easily within the neighborhood. I recommend avoiding meter parking directly on Melrose and find parking within the neighborhood. This will allow you to relax in peace while getting your hair done. I expressed my concern with Nubia with doing the palm rolling method. So we tried the crochet method. She did cleanest parts ever! I've had the same crochet method done by others but somehow I also loss length. She was also helpful making my daughter comfortable while she was there waiting for me to finish. Washed my hair with cold water. Way too rough washing and twisting. Twisted way too tight. Her next client came while I was still in the chair. She was rushing. No care in her work at all.
