Called Local Garage Doors because the garage door would not open. I called and the technician (Augie) showed up around an hour later. Turns out the opener motor was dead and the spring which was on the door was undersized which made the motor work harder than it should have thus shortening its life. Augie explained everything and we agreed to replace the one spring with two and replace the motor. You can barely hear the garage door open and close. He said it was because he didn't know what size spring would be needed, but that doesn't make sense because I actually sent a picture of the spring that included the spring part number and I listed the part number in the notes. We were extremely over charged and I believe taken advantage of. We tried to talk to the office. But they did not want to address our issue. We are older. Retired. Live in 55+ Club at Westpark, Roseville. We have a standard 2 car garage door in a Del Web home. Our garage door would not go down. Unlatched, it was very very heavy. I probably could have let it drop down, but I would not have been able to get it back up. We called Local Garage Doors and they sent someone out within a couple hours. He quickly determined we just needed the 2 springs replaced. Easy. He had them in the truck. He gave us the estimate of ~$725. I was shocked. About $350 for the springs, $375 for labor. I discussed my "you have to be kidding me?" with him. So he gave us 10% off his quote. I still could not believe it. But we were stuck. What should we do. I felt they must be competitive. How could they be in business. I'm not too concerned with getting other quotes to save $50. So we gave him the go ahead. The first shock was, he was done in 15 minutes. How could labor be nearly $400 if it only took 15 minutes !! ?? The bottom line is, after he left, we called 3 other garage door repair companies. All were happy to quote over the phone that depending on the spring quality we selected, it would be about $275-$350. Total with Material and Labor. And it would take less than 30 minutes to do. This is all pure fact. I will be happy to talk or email with anyone if they want to know anything further. I don't know how Mr Tyler Martin's company has such good reviews. They had 4.5 stars, and they were open till 9 pm, so I called, and they set me up with an appointment the next morning! Jacob arrived on time and was super friendly. I was initially quoted $350 just to replace the springs, but then he discovered that my brand of garage door was difficult to work with, and the original spring was not installed ideally. He ended up needing a helper, and with the extra parts needed, the final total was $820 instead. The guy that showed up was just a sales guy. He barely looked at our system before saying we needed a brand new one. He also made a comment that the doors we have now don't look good which felt like an unecessarily rude comment. Then their $200 service was basically a guy with a drill tightening the screws and spraying WD40 on the rollers. They didn't even open the case around the motor to check it or service it. Then they said it was a safety hazard and our door would collapse at any minute. They came out to fix my garage door that would not shut all the way without opening again. Tech came out and said he wanted to start with balancing the door for $600 since it is a residential high lift door but he was not sure it would fix it. I told him I did not want to pay him the $600 to balance it for him to say he could not do it. He said he would not charge me anymore labor and only parts if the balancing didn't work. A little while later he called back and said he could not fix it and requested the $600 payment. He then sent a quote for $1600 to redo the torsion system. They sent me the quote that had another $600 on labor included in the estimate. So this would have been $2200 total. I contacted the office twice to confirm they were not going to charge me another $600 in labor with no response. I finally asked for a supervisor and the supervisor said the tech was sick and he would confirm I was told there would not be anymore labor charges. Then, the tech called and told me to ignore the other $600 in labor on the contract. I then called another company to get a quote and they were able to fix the garage door for $1000. So even if they did take off the extra $600 in labor it was still the same price and were much more responsive. I understand it was during the holidays but lack of communication and charging me $600 for nothing will stop me from using them again.
