August 1 update: Local Garage Doors' own senior technician has now confirmed during a recorded inspection that this installation was incomplete and required substantial corrective work. The project took nearly three months and multiple visits. After obvious problems remained, their installer, Brendan, blamed the property's foundation and framing. We hired an independent garage-door company, which documented multiple installation deficiencies: - Safety sensors mounted 16-17 inches above the floor - An unlevel and misaligned door - Improper track and cable tension - Unprogrammed or nonfunctioning controls - Visible gaps and sealing problems Local Garage Doors itself confirmed in writing that the safety sensors should be no higher than six inches. The company also advised us not to operate the door until it conducted its own inspection. On August 1, Local Garage Doors sent Luca, one of its senior technicians. During the recorded inspection, Luca substantially agreed with the independent findings and estimated that the necessary corrections would take another two to four hours. Local Garage Doors later acknowledged in writing that Luca identified items that could be addressed and was prepared to perform corrective work. The company is nevertheless refusing a refund and arguing that its willingness to make those corrections should not be considered an admission that the installation was defective. That position makes no sense. A door requiring hours of re-leveling, adjustment, cable tensioning, safety-sensor correction, programming, and sealing work was not complete and should never have been marked or charged as complete. Technician came to my house and gave me a quote that was just under twice the amount quoted over the phone. He said it was because he didn't know what size spring would be needed, but that doesn't make sense because I actually sent a picture of the spring that included the spring part number and I listed the part number in the notes. Pretty dishonest. Also, I obviously can't be positive on this, but I am confident enough to say something... We were extremely over charged and I believe taken advantage of. We tried to talk to the office. But they did not want to address our issue. We are older. Retired. Live in 55+ Club at Westpark, Roseville. We have a standard 2 car garage door in a Del Web home. Our garage door would not go down. Unlatched, it was very very heavy. I discussed my "you have to be kidding me?" with him. So he gave us 10% off his quote. I still could not believe it. But we were stuck. What should we do. I felt they must be competitive. How could they be in business. I'm not too concerned with getting other quotes to save $50. So we gave him the go ahead. The first shock was, he was done in 15 minutes. How could labor be nearly $400 if it only took 15 minutes !! ?? The bottom line is, after he left, we called 3 other garage door repair companies. All were happy to quote over the phone that depending on the spring quality we selected, it would be about $275-$350. Total with Material and Labor. And it would take less than 30 minutes to do. He also made a comment that the doors we have now don't look good which felt like an unecessarily rude comment. They came out to fix my garage door that would not shut all the way without opening again. Tech came out and said he wanted to start with balancing the door for $600 since it is a residential high lift door but he was not sure it would fix it. I told him I did not want to pay him the $600 to balance it for him to say he could not do it. He said he would not charge me anymore labor and only parts if the balancing didn't work. A little while later he called back and said he could not fix it and requested the $600 payment. He then sent a quote for $1600 to redo the torsion system. They sent me the quote that had another $600 on labor included in the estimate. So this would have been $2200 total. I contacted the office twice to confirm they were not going to charge me another $600 in labor with no response. I finally asked for a supervisor and the supervisor said the tech was sick and he would confirm I was told there would not be anymore labor charges. Then, the tech called and told me to ignore the other $600 in labor on the contract. I then called another company to get a quote and they were able to fix the garage door for $1000. So even if they did take off the extra $600 in labor it was still the same price and were much more responsive. I understand it was during the holidays but lack of communication and charging me $600 for nothing will stop me from using them again.
