Went in for drinks. Mine was overloaded with vodka which made it unappealing for me. Nothing about the place from the decor, customer service or menu stood out. I did notice quite a few dirty tables despite it being relatively slow with lots of staff. Visited Vancouver from Calgary for the week, Local ended up being one of our last stops and it was phenomenal. Lawren was our server and she was extraordinary, by far the most personable server we've had the entire time we've been in Vancouver. Certainly ask for her and you can be sure to enjoy the service. We had the pirogies as appetizers and they were some of the best pirogies I've had. The Reuben melts in your mouth, and my fish tacos were beyond impressive. Went early afternoon on a sunny day with single digit temperature. Sitting on the patio against the building was comfortable. Service was casual and which ever server happened to be around looked after our needs. I ordered the Local burger with yam fries and my wife just yam fries. The server assumed without asking that my wife didn't need a fork while I was given fork and knife - the opposite of what was actually needed. The burger was a double but the same amount of meat as a usual single. The burger was tasty but could has used a better bun as the bottom was completely soggy by the time I finished. read more

Having frequented the Local in Kits many times, I was curious to see how that experience transformed to it's new Gastown location. Had the opportunity last Saturday with the girlfriend (17th) to do just that. Found parking just around the corner, and was pleasantly surprised to find the rates very reasonable at $2.00 per hour. Bear in mind though the max parking is 2 hours in Gastown, unlike other areas in the city were the max parking is 3 hours. (i.e. Yaletown for example.) No biggie, Just something to bear in mind once you get into the "swing" of things. The Gastown Local is VERY easy to find, and is beautifully located on the corner(s) of Alexander, Powell, and Water streets in the heart of Gastown. (the old Chill Winston location I believe) Couldn't help noticing the great looking outside patios as we walked in, and they are something we will certainly be back to experience once the warmer weather arrives. The first thing that we noticed as we walked in was how open and expansive the interior is. Very cool. No dark corners to get stuck in. Every table seemed to have a nice view, and the BIG windows on the front and the West side really add to the overall experience. Found myself not missing a patio to sit on, and given the temperature that day, was perfectly content to sit inside and enjoy the ambiance and the sun coming in through the windows. The high tops everywhere are also a great touch. We were greeted almost instantly by the staff at the front desk and the day manager. Very friendly and accommodating and we were seated before we knew it. Water at the table and any and all questions answered by the waitress in a matter of minutes. Staff seemed very friendly, knowledgeable, and well managed. We ordered a couple of glasses of the Argentinian Malbec and looked through the menu. Found lot's that we would love to try, but both of us settled on the West Coast Chop Salad. I had the Ahi Tuna version while the girlfriend had the Grilled Chicken version. BOTH versions were outstanding and gave us a chance to "share" the experience. Fit the bill perfectly as we had a big breakfast earlier that day, and we were just looking for something on the lighter, not too heavy side. The Argentinian Malbec was as advertised. VERY nice. We stayed the full two hours and enjoyed ourselves very much. Staff was attentive to our needs but not too much if you know what I mean. We will be back! Great job! read more

Kyra, the night manager at the local is an absolute beauty! We wanted something informal, fun, and high vibes for my girlfriends birthday on Saturday January 20th. We understood that it would be busy and that they didn't take reservations. We figured if we showed up early enough we would be able to get a table. We did wait, but the place was slammed and all staff members were trying to accommodate everyone as best they could. We had a party kept growing and growing, by chance and not ignorance. We were only supposed to be 8. Nonetheless, we were patient for our table and they were patient with me. There was never any argument or pushback when I told Kyra...so....we need one more chair! The food was great, the ambiance amazing, and the staff was incredible. Thanks again for being so good to me and us. It was a great Birthday party and one that wont soon be forgotten. I believe this is my first 5 stars review. Im from LA, so everything might be compared to LA. I was with my family (size of 4) and ordered local burger, diablo burger, hot wings (with salt and pepper/ sauce on the side), and skillet pasta. The portion was perfect for 4 ppl. The fries were little salty, but I'm sure it will be fine with beer. Our server was JL? Christina? Im not so sure with her name, but she was really really kind and nice. I usually never ever post negative reviews but we were really bummed out about this place. The location is excellent- right across from Gassy Jack himself- the decor is cool, and the menu looked great so we wanted to love it here. We just stopped in to grab a drink and peruse the menu really but we were impressed with all the options. The entire staff looked to be younger than 25, which would normally be no issue (actually, both my husband and I were very impressed with the attention to detail we could see the young cooks give the food in the open kitchen) but it may have had something to do with the absolute disregard for customer service. We were at the bar and tried to get the attention of two bartenders and it honestly felt like they were intentionally ignoring us. They weren't outwardly rude just entirely nonchalant, as if we weren't the intended crowd and we were taking up valuable real estate. Unfortunately it just really put a bad taste in our mouth. read more

Checked out the locals new location (since it took over the beloved Chill Winston) just for a cocktail. Asked the server if they make their whisky sours with egg white and she said yes, when the sours were dropped off it was not made that way. Would drink it without it anyways but wanted to let her know, when I did she said "oh the bartender must be new" and walked away.... Not that it was the end of the world, but just a disappointing lack of customer care. read more

Out of curiosity, I came to Local Public Eatery for the first time to try out this restaurant. I love the vibrant lively atmosphere here! The food is absolutely fantastic & there are good varied selection of excellent alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages. It is a pleasant surprise how wonderful this place is. The entire staff also are great, professional, & very friendly. In particular, Liz, my server this evening is absolutely outstanding. She made me feel so welcomed here & spent precious time to introduce to me the various food & drink selections that makes the Local special & distinctive from the competition. I tried dishes & drinks suggested by her that are not offered elsewhere. She treated me not as an ordinary transient customer, but as a valuable family member of this restaurant. I feel very respected here. Because of this amazing experience, I plan to tell my friends & family members about this place & bring them here to try out this restaurant. Like many folks In Gastown, we were visitors, and wandered into Local after being drawn by their patio. It was Saturday afternoon and busy, but the hostess sat us at a great two seat table at the fence by the patio. We noticed lots of guests whose dogs were laying happily on the other side of the fence. A waitress stopped by, cleaned the table (which was pretty clean already) and took our drinks order. Drinks showed up promptly, and in the meantime, another server checked on us about drinks. Beer was good and cold, and the vibe was happy and busy, but not chaotic or too loud. We ordered beef tacos and a chicken Cobb salad. The server checked to be sure we understood the tacos were appetizer size (they were an appetizer), which we appreciated very much. Both dishes were nicely presented and very flavorful. The salad was generous and the chicken was charred as described and very tasty. Three small tacos were plenty of food for my not too hungry partner. Encouraged by good entries, we ordered the chocolate pot, essentially chocolate pudding with a layer of caramel and a fresh ginger cookie. Yummy. Throughout the meal various waitstaff checked on us. We were seated immediately but it took a while for anyone to acknowledge us or bring menus. It seemed like our server, Elizabeth, was unconcerned. For example, the sole time she checked on us, when she stopped at our table, she spoke briefly and curtly, followed by immediately turning away before giving us even a second to speak. Normally, when we go out, we like to have a few drinks and maybe even dessert. However at no point were we given the opportunity to order anything from her, and not for lack of trying, so we unfortunately gave up. Pretty unimpressed. The guaranteed about Chill Winston was the great service and that has significantly gone down hill. Our server needed to be flagged down every time we needed something and even then didn't come right away. Drinks took forever and payment took even longer. Probably won't come back, or it definitely won't be my first choice in an area with so many options. read more

My party of 8 arrived around 8:30pm without a reso and though the patio was full we were offered a choice of tables inside. The room was busy but the service was prompt, efficient and friendly. The place feels on point, large windows to watch the traffic and people outside while the buzz was nice because the music wasn't at night club levels that give you a migraine while eating link you would at some of the other chain spots. A few tv's scattered about the room had a football game on without making the entire place feel like you're eating at a BestBuy which was appreciated. Focused local beer selection, food arrived sooner than we expected so the execution was efficient and accurate. Grounded atmosphere without pretentious attitude from the staff is getting harder to find in Vancouver but it thrives here. Was impressed that one of the managers (Jocelyn) warmly inquired about our experience towards the end, thanked us for coming and wondered if there was anything they could have done better. There wasn't. This place is lucky to have her and she deserves a raise because we will definitely be back sooner than later. Overall an underrated gem in Gastown for sure! read more

My family and I took a vacation this week to Vancouver to celebrate my birthday. We fell in love with Gastown. Each night we selected a different restaurant. I had been told that the food in Vancouver was excellent. Local did not disappoint us. When we arrived, we were told that they were no longer seating people outside. I was a bit disappointed. However, when it began to rain about half an hour later I realized that they were being considerate of their customers. My husband and two of my daughters couldn't decide which beer to select. The waitress was patient and kept bringing them samples to taste. My third daughter opted for their "mystery wine" which she enjoyed. I fancy myself a sangria connoisseur. I had a large luscious one. Everyone was impressed with their dinners. I'm not going into detail because that was not the reason for this review. My hamburger wasn't brought out with the other dinners. Jason the manager spotted it immediately. He came over and apologized and said my dinner was on the grill already. He brought out my salad that was meant to be served with the meal so i wouldn't be hungry while my family was eating. He actually stayed and chatted with us until and after it arrived. Well, in reality, he talked with us until we left. It actually made me forget that I was still eating while everyone else had completed their meals. My hamburger was quite moist and tasty. When I had finished my dinner, Jason brought out a dessert for us to share because one of my daughters relayed to him that we had come to Vancouver to celebrate my birthday. The "icing on the cake" was no charge for my dinner. We will definitely dine here when we return to BC. read more
