I'd been to the Earl's Kitchen in Orlando, and was interested to see how this one compared. It's in a large (for Vancouver) upstairs space on Robson. The interior is fresh and open, perhaps recently updated? The menu is above the level of typical sports bar food, although there are plenty of football games playing on the TVs around the bar. I had a Cobb salad, which I enjoyed although it was a bit odd. It was as if someone had read the ingredients of a Cobb salad, but never actually seen one. Typically they are served with discrete rows of chopped ingredients that can be mixed at the table or eaten by plowing your way through one row at a time. This one was just a mixed green salad with some of the traditional ingredients sprinkled around it. But the accompanying dressing was quite good, and I like it for a nice, light lunch. My companion had the Stea Frits. This dish is often served with a thin steak, or with the steak sliced up in the kitchen. Here it was more of a baseball, and I have to say it wasn't the most tender steak. The accompanying steak knife wasn't really up to the task, but oddly the serrated table knife worked better. The rub and sear on the outside was delicious, though. Service was pleasant. There's also a nice outside dining area that would be a great place to sit, too. read more

We got martini espressos, truffle fries, angry chicken wrap, prawn taco and yuzu tuna tataki The espresso martini were pretty disappointing. Coffee flavour felt really watered down. Wouldn't recommend Truffle fries were strangley addicting but didn't have any truffle flavour whatsoever. Angry chicken wrap was only a little spicy. More sweet. Chicken was masked by the sauce which I didn't mind. Would order this again as a snack Yuzu tuna tataki were bad. Tuna had a frozen flavour to it. Texture was sandy and difficult to swallow. As a first stop in Canada, my husband and I saw the rooftop seating from our hotel room and decided this would be our first meal of the day (at 1:45pm - flights, man). There are significant pros and there were a couple downsides. Pros: Service was fantastic. From the host to our server to random other personnel, everyone we encountered was incredibly friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Rooftop seating! The indoor ambiance was very nice, but on a day like today, outdoor seating - with a mountain view - was clutch. I love that they have "spirit free" drink options. The calamari was delicious. I love Rhode Island calamari and this was the best I've had since leaving New England. They are mindful of allergies and ask up front. Downside: The pineapple ginger mule under-delivered. I don't know if the passionfruit was one ingredient too far, but something seemed to clash within the flavors. The oven was down(?), which we didn't learn about until we tried to order the salmon. No salmon, steak, or chicken dishes were available. My husband was bummed, but to our waitress's credit, she suggested the poké bowl, and he seemed to like it. I think overall, the food was more okay than great. The price point might have been a bit higher than delivery. In any event, it was a nice first place to visit! read more

A one star would suggest that there was at least one good thing. Well. There wasn't. Here it is: I've been an Earls customer since the first one opened in North Vancouver in the mid 90's. Their Santa Fe Chicken Salad is my favourite salad on their menu and gradually throughout the years it has declined in quality. Today it hit rock bottom. The mix of lettuce was entirely rotten....all of it (see pic.) The chicken was cold and the avocado was going brown. The first bite of the salad made me lose my appetite. Literally. Didn't eat and left. The Bigger Better Burger with a side of fries was a disgrace to Burgers all around the world. When our server placed this dish in front of me....the first thought that came to mind was....."Is someone's leftover food being served to me by accident?" (see pic.) The beef patty was not a patty, it was for some reason, cut up in chunks....kind of like a sloppy joe. The meat itself was super dry, over cooked and burnt on the outside. I can't even describe how bad the fries were. I used to serve and bus tables all throughout college and what this dish reminded me of was the leftover food on people's dish after they had finished and left, which I was clearing off the table. (See pic.) We spoke to the manager. He was nice enough. I had such a bad taste in my mouth of the food and the experience that I just wanted to leave. In the past Earls was bustling and cool with tasty food, killer servers and an addictive atmosphere fronting a standard ruthless in quality. Had dinner here while shopping around Robson St. I just ordered the yuzu tuna Tataki and crispy prawn roll. Both were fine, the roll wasn't wrapped in traditional nori, so that threw me off a little. Service was ok, our waitress disappeared for a little while when we were ready to pay and leave (which if you read my review for notch8, you'd think it was a Vancouver thing by now!). I dined at this Earl's the last time I was in Vancouver, which was several years ago. When I'm in Canada, I gravitate toward a local Earl's as I enjoy the bustling vibe, good service, interesting menu, and value pricing. This time around, Gayle and I stopped in for dinner. Actually the Yaletown branch was closer to our hotel, but we were more familiar with schlepping up Robson. The restaurant is upstairs and features a roomy indoor dining room (with bar) and a nice outdoor patio (with optional heaters of course). Our wait staff were very nice and took our order and delivered it from the kitchen in a timely manner. As they got busier in the evening, the check took awhile to arrive, but since we were having such a nice time, that was A-OK. We both very much enjoyed our selections (both with wine). Gayle chose the Ahi Poke Bowl, while opted for a half order of BBQ Back Ribs. It was the right amount of food what we ordered and went down well with every bite. read more

The seafood platter is better than any menu item from Nobu. Yes, I said it. We were here on a day trip from Seattle and booked a room at the Blue Horizon and this place was walking distance, so we gave it a try. The ambiance, service, food/alcohol selection was chefs kiss. Came in on a Monday night for dinner without a reservation. Was immediately seated and promptly served. Had a margarita and an Old Fashioned, both were tasty. For dinner I had the sirloin steak steak over cheese tortellini with spinach and asparagus. The pasta and sauce were outstanding. Steak was a bit grizzly. Asked for it to be blackened/Cajun as well. If they DID that, I couldn't tell. On a positive note, I asked for it to be cooked medium, and it was spot on. Just a bit tough. Would have been nice to have some bread or a roll with it. Stopped by for Dessert and a drink. Got the sticky toffee pudding and a coffee-baileys on the rocks. Sticky toffee pudding was warm, rich, moist and overall luxurious with a healthy dose of caramel stickiness over the top. I couldn't really pick out the dates but the cake was a star and I would definitely return just for that dish. The atmosphere, service and friendliness of the bartender was spot on. They had a late happy hour and we were all glad to have some food and drinks. We ordered a couple of pizzas and some wine and beers. Everything was fine. No real complaint until the end of our meal. As we were eating a mouse ran by the table. I thought I was mistaken, but it scurried back by the table a second and then third time. We told the manager and he said something to the effect of, yes we have mice at times. So if you don't mid the mouse...recommend...if rodent is a deal breaker, don't recommend. read more

I've got to admit it, it's really really good! I mean it's beyond great! We had poke tacos wrapped in seeded rice paper. Amazing! We had the prawn tacos also in rice paper which had an East Indian mild taste. Truly a delight. The main dish was what they called surf and turf, sushi prawns and cut up steak slices in a teriyaki based hot sauce. My wife enjoyed it, I liked it. A bit too spicy for me but she enjoyed it. Our meal was followed by a dazzling slice of celebration cake. The manager came over to us after a weird greeting at the front door, that alone raised their stars to five. For the past few years that we've been going to Vancouver, we like coming back here because the food is pretty good, and service is even better. The food is simple and homey. We discovered this place while on a search for a restaurant that serves sweet potato fries (American) or fried yams (Canadian). Steak Frites: 4/5 Fig and Chicken Sandwich: 5/5 Chicken Wings: 3/5 You can ask to be seated on the first floor, the bar, the 2nd floor, or the patio. Service is great the times we've been here. Terrible is all I can say.. I've never been a fan of Earls. Food is mediocre and alright at best. Drinks are usually watered down. I'd say this location is a bit better than most when it comes to cocktails. The interior is nice but parkings are a pain in downtown as usual. Best to bus or Skytrain if it's an option for you. The only reason we came is because my friend wanted her birthday there. We had 12 people and 2 tables, and we made reservation before hand. My friends haven't arrived when we got there so we didn't know which table to look for. When we asked and told the host the name for the reservation, she was cold and unprofessional. She was too lazy to even walk us to the table as ANY hosts or staff should, but all she did was point in a vague direction. When we asked, "sorry but which table exactly?" She got so annoyed and said just that one at the back passed the bar. We walked over but there were 3 tables behind the bar area and we were just standing there all confused. When we walked back to ask another staff, she was nice about it and went to ask the host. She confronted the host and I heard her whisper "you should never let guests walk by themselves, you should show them the way", but the Asian host ignored her. The Caucasian waitress looked at the reservation and showed us the way instead. Some of the other friends were late and the same rude host came and asked if we are even going to use the second table, otherwise they are going to be for other customers. There's like 10 other tables empty and half the bar stools empty, and we did reserve 2 tables so not sure what she was rushing us for. After the food and drinks came...I saw a mouse run across from another side of the restaurant to the opposite, passing our table right beside me. Restrooms look clean? After arriving in Vancouver after a harrowing taxi ride from the airport on a rainy Friday mid afternoon and checking into to the Blue Horizon Hotel my husband and I were ready for a late lunch. I easily could see Earl's from our hotel room, looked at the offerings and off we went. We were not disappointed. Had a good experience from hostess to serving staff, each one of them looking at the tables as they went by to be sure all was good. We ordered 3 appetizers and happy hour drinks, all delicious and exactly what was needed. Little Ahi tacos in wonton skins, crisp calamari and small salads. Came here with a girlfriend after work. It was scorching hot so we opted to sit inside instead. We opted for the happy hour menu which had quite a bit of good selections. The food was actually pretty good and the portion was decent. My favorite was the Maui tuna poke as it was very refreshing on a hot day. I got a sangria which was also delicious. However, my friend got the rhino draught and it wasn't good at all, in my opinion. I got a few sips of it and found it to be too light and didn't have much taste. Good beers usually leave an after-taste in your mouth, this one didn't. Needless to say, she only drank 1/4 of it. My only complaint was how LOUD the live music sounded. This Earls location wasn't very big and the 2 singers were so loud that my friend and I had to raise our voice to talk. Our voice was pretty raspy once we left the premise. Came here for the happy hour on a Saturday night. Earls offers happy hour everyday from 3-6 and 9 to close with deals on both snacks and drinks. My friend and I had a late lunch, so all we wanted were a couple of small bites. From their happy hour menu, we decided to share a margarita pitcher ($23) and the 8" margherita pizza ($3.50), and also salt and pepper wings from their regular menu ($12.75). The margarita pitcher came with way too much ice, which is to be expected, but also tasted a bit off to me. After drinking half of my first glass, my throat started hurting a bit and continued to hurt while I finished the glass and had a second one. I've had plenty of margaritas in my life and that's never happened to me before. The wings were delicious and surprisingly not too dry as most pub wings tend to be, in my experience. But our favorite was the margherita pizza. I wasn't expecting much for $3.50, to be honest, but it was fresh out of the oven and cooked just right. We liked it so much we ordered a second one. Giana was my server this evening. I wanted to take a moment to write this review about her. My friends and i got the most spectacular treatment and experience that i received this evening. Giana was both extraordinarily personable and kind. I watched her have to deal with a group of disgruntled and rude clientele. They made derogatory and rude remarks to her face and behind her back. I watched her handle herself with dignity and the utmost professionalism. Regardless of this hurdle in her shift she never wavered in her service and delivery of exceptional client experience for all of her tables. Giana is that girl.
