Customer service needs work. Popped in to taste some wine and was ignored by employee (honestly glared at when we walked in, like we were a disturbance). We felt unwelcome and uncomfortable so we left. Wales across the street to another wine tasting room and sat on a lovely back patio and tasted beautiful wines, bought several bottles to take home. When you first enter the Locals Tasting Room, Patrick and Dick are there to meet you and say hi. Dick is actually a wine producer and has lots of fun stories to share. Both of these gentlemen were welcoming, kind, gracious, and full of great information. They didn't charge for any of the wine we tasted, which was probably about 8 or 9 varieties. There were four of us adults. I did buy a bit more wine then I would normally, as I felt I wanted to contribute back to their business for all the free tasting they provided us. The establishment was clean, neat, but basic. But that's ok, because the experience was about the wine and learning all about the processes and different grapes used to make each one. You can literally taste every wine in their tasting room..for free, but that's like over 60 wines, I'm sure you could get into a lot of trouble here doing that. They also have other non-wine things to purchase as well. Love, Love this tasting room in the funky town of Geyserville! Such a welcoming experience with Zachary doing the tastings. We came here three times while we were in town, visiting from Michigan. So many small lot wines and the quality was phenomenal. We met one of the wine makers while we were here. Tastings are free, which is unheard of in Sonoma County. I can't praise this place enough. And, if you purchase a bottle and go to one of the restaurants in town, they waive the corkage fee! We will be back. read more

Tired of paying all those excessive tasting fees to get a measly 4 or 5 pours of Dry Creek Valley wine? Looking for a spot to taste wine before walking (unsteadily, perhaps) a few steps away to order wood-fired pizza, halibut fish tacos, pasta fazool, and house-cured meats? Ever want the wines to come to YOU, rather than the other way around? If you answered "yes" to any of those things, then Locals Tasting Room is totally right for you. It is probably the best wine country tasting room of its type that I've ever encountered in all of California, with not only some of the most interesting local wines. but also a complimentary pour policy that makes it possible for each and every member of your party to personalize their tastings to their specific preferences. But how, you might ask, does one choose? There are basically three ways to play it: (1) The "Vaya con Dios" shotgun style method: close your eyes, grab a pencil, and point at the printed, 2-page tasting menu (front and back, nearly 65 choices!). Once you've reached 4,5,6, or 7 pours, stop! After sampling them all, pick some of your favorites to take home and don't forget to thank the wine tasting gods for their beneficence. (2) The "college kid" test prep method: download the tasting menu ahead of time from the LTR website. Do research on the wineries. Make a list the night before. Stick to your choices, even if tempted to wander. If you did your research well, you'll discover a few really good bottles to buy. (3) The "horizontal mambo" method: pick a preferred grape varietal, or wine style (Rhone blends, sparkling, oaked whites, 15%+ alcohol, etc.) and try wines across the spectrum of winemakers. 4 Pinots. 5 Zins. 6 Chardonnays. If you have enough friends with you, and it's close to the winter holidays, you could even sing the "12 Nights of Christmas" with wines substituting for all those birds, barnyard animals, leaping lords, and golden rings. (Eg. "Fiiiiiive Pinot Noirs ... four Alexander Cabs, three French blends, two sparkling wines, and more 'Struttin White' in my empty glaaaaass ..."). Have fun with it. It's not the MCAT®. Truth be told, I sampled from a little of all three methods (but I kept my singing to myself). I chose three wineries of interest - Arbios/Praxis, Pendleton, and Peterson - and also saved room for a 3-flight tasting of Petite Sirahs. I also stole a few sips from a friend who was trying the Kitfox blends (Mattress Police, One Time Spaceman, Voodoo Vixen). With names like that, how could one not? While there was no consensus winner here, we weren't picking a President, and none of us were named Robert Parker, so there was no need to reach a majority or assign 90+ scores. I liked the Praxis wines a lot, esp. their rare bottling of 2012 Central Coast Lagrein (an Italian red variety from Alto Adige, genetically related to Teroldego, Pinot Noir, and Syrah). It was superb, like an Austrian Zweigelt, with perhaps a little more black fruit and wet earth and a bit less spice. So, too, the Praxis 2015 rosé of Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast, a lively pink, rose-petal of a wine with some intensity that will compliment autumn vegetable dishes like kabocha squash soup. Rosés like this are not just for summer sipping anymore! My other favorites were made by Pendleton, especially their Alexander Valley estate Petite Sirah and Mourvèdre. The elevation of their vineyards is 2000 feet above the valley floor, so this tempers the fierce heat in summer and results I think in more complex, earthier, mineral-driven wines where the rich fruit has something to play off against, making it less jammy and pulpy than lower-elevation Alexander Valley fruit. There are no Costco or Trader Joe's wines here that you can pick up for less than $12. Most are fairly priced in the $20-35 range with reserve wines and Cabs and some Pinots pushing into $50 territory. Staff here provide snacks to accompany the tastings, also complimentary: sliced Columbus dry salami, chips and dip, crackers. Just enough to hold you over until lunch at Diavola, right next door. How could your average Sonoma County wine taster be unhappy about any of that? Note: there is also a lovely $5 used book shelf to the left of the tasting bar where you can pick up some good reading if you're staying here for a few nights, plus gifts and clothing for sale. A must stop for those who want to taste wines from local vineyards. They have 10+ wineries represented for free tasting - can't go wrong with that. Mike Pendleton, owner of the Pendleton Estate Vineyards was there the day we stopped and we loved chatting with him. His Zinverdre (50/50 Zinfandel and Mourvedre at 13.9% alcohol) is astonishing stuff. We got some. Also we liked the 2009 Beachfront from Bedarra Vineyards (Dry Creek Valley). Got some. Go here! Go here! Go here! I can not say enough good things about this place. Tell them what about wine you like and they will find you a wine you will love. The great thing about this place is that, as in their name, it is local wines, many from places that are small producers of wine from that region and many of whom have no tasting room. My favorite pour had to be the zin from Peterson winery, and no it was not because the wine maker just so happened to be there the second night we went (he was also signing bottles). Why run around and try to cram a bunch of tastings into one exhausting day when you can just go here? Laid back pourer who actually prefers beer but has a knack for wine. I saw someone bring her a glass of wine and she, just by smelling it, was able to tell what they had been poured. Free tastings and the bottles of wine I loved were also reasonably priced. read more

Our "secret" wine destination that we never mind sharing with others. Just north of Healdsburg in the small town of Geyserville, Locals provides many small wineries with a way to get their wines into the hands of tourists at very decent prices. These are not cheap wines but many are inexpensive, especially given their quality. Paired with an excellent pizza from Diavola next door and you've got a great afternoon or evening. Patrick was a superstar wrapped in a friendly vibe. He led us through multiple producers and wines, leading to cases showing up on my doorstep now that we're back home. I can't recommend Locals Tasting Room highly enough, especially if you want to do comparisons and discover both long-time growers and newly established small players in Sonoma County. I think we bought multiple different wines from 3+ wineries and just had to hold the other six or so for our next visit. Patrick's recommendations were spot on, and he pulled the right info from us to steer us in excellent directions. Often you get lucky and one of the winemakers/winery owners themselves is helping to pour, which is great for connecting more closely to the wine you drink. What an unexpectedly awesome experience with Patrick at Locals. This is a tasting room right in town in Geyserville. First of all we don't visit tasting rooms in town that often. Not for any reason other than the fact that we really enjoying meeting the winemakers at their vineyards & having a tour, learning the history, etc. In any case we happened upon Locals because we were in town, It's not super inviting simply because the owner has combined her tasting room with a vintage store selling merchandise. It is a little weird frankly. However, we are so glad we dropped in. The tasting was free which is unheard of in Sonoma County. Plus the wines offered are all small local makers, and a large selection at that. So not only are you supporting the locals but you are experiencing wines you wont find anywhere else because 95% of them don't have tasting rooms. Patrick was so knowledgeable about the wines & so hospitable that we ended up staying much longer than expected. Bottom line : great wines, great experience and great knowledge. We highly recommend you stop in and try some new wines. They have a great wine club too. Go see Patrick (and his lovely Polly the dog) on Monday's or Tuesday's. read more

It is hard to believe a place like Locals exists anymore in these days of high charges to simply taste a couple wines. Tasting is complimentary here and there are over 70 wines to taste! I started tasting by flights to get a full spectrum of wines in each varietal category - and even included a couple wines (Praxis Lagrein!) that didn't really have a home in any category! Pinot Noir, for example, has five wines from different AVAs and price points from $18 to $40. All were very good wines. I bought a couple of the lower priced Pinots for every day drinking and a few from Sonoma Coast for special meals. The key thing here is choice and variety and I look forward to going back and trying through Locals' nine Zinfandels from different local producers. Locals has a fun and lively ambiance with great music, cool retail offerings (jewelry and vintage clothing!) and excellent stemware. Heading back next week and will post more soon. read more

Make sure your driver isn't to thirsty before a tasting at locals. The kind folks here represent a delicious and delectable myriad of wines of all flavors and colors, from some 8 different vintners. Believe it son, this is the one-stop-shop, wine-o's heaven on Earth. The proprietors are super friendly and most of the vintners are small production folk that do it as much for the love as for the cheddar. What you get is some (hit or miss) truly spectacular wines for the price. With such a huge selection (probably as many as 50, excuse the excessive parenthesis) of wines to choose from, one is damned not to find a few choice bottles in the crowd. And it is in Sonoma, Napa's better half. Though I love Napa, and they do have, in my opinion, the best wines in the world, I just can't stand the bachelorette parties screaming and yelling about how buttery their chardonnays are. I also can't stand strolling up to a tasting room armed with a meager budget only to find that I can't even afford the tasting, nor is my limited wine vocabulary lofty enough to talk shop with the pretentious, butt-mouth behind the counter. At Locals I told them that one of the wines tasted like a pool raft, and they considered it, made an effort to understand what I was getting at, and in the end, agreed. I do not use the race card, after-all I am from the Bay Area and am use to a wide range of color as well as socioeconomic backgrounds. As a group of 4 young professionals, we clearly had a different experience than the 3 white women that walked in the door. We got no explanation on the wines, little interaction and truly felt we were being quickly brushed off there premises. I want to be clear that this review is in no way representative of the wines, but rather the interaction and treatment that we received. I love the concept of having a single place to sample wine from growers that are too small to support their own tasting room - or who live in areas so remote as to make it difficult for wine lovers to make a visit. I spent about 20 minutes there and tasted a dry gewurztraminer which was good but didn't cause fireworks to go off for me. Then I wanted to try a Sirah but they had 3 different ones, so I said, "Which has the most smokey taste?" A wry smile and the man behind the counter pointed at the William Gordon Sirah. "I don't like Sirahs - but this is one that I love!", he said. It was crazy good. I purchased two bottles at $30 a bottle which tasted ever as good as the $90 bottles I can't afford in Napa county. If you are looking for spacious vistas of a vineyard, a romantic setting to propose to your future wife - this isn't the place. If you are shopping for a good wine or something unique - this place is for you. You know the song "Jesus is on the Mainline" https://goo.gl/TFE3su (2:49 into the clip) ? Well this place is kind of like that song goes... you just walk in and tell them what you want. Chances are, they will have it because they represent a handful of different wineries. Here's why: * Massive high-quality selection - I think there are over 70 wines to taste on their menu, and although not all of them are to my personal taste there's something there for everyone. * Intimate setting w/ knowledgeable staff - the people behind the counter really know their stuff. They can let you fly on your own if you know your way around their menu, or they can guide you if you need a little hand-holding. And speaking of the behind-the-counter staff... * Winemakers pour their own wines - most of the weekends I've visited, one or more of the boutique winemakers are behind the counter pouring their own stuff. They're all happy to chat about their wine-making process. * Reasonable prices - nothing too expensive (most in the $20-40 range) and some real gems for cheap! * Free tasting - none of Napa Valley's $20 gets you 3 tastes b/s here. Taste for free, the entire menu (remember, that's over 70 wines). You could easily just taste here and not even go to any other area wineries. (But of course where's the fun in that, it's gorgeous countryside. Go drive and visit some other great area wineries. But drive safe and sober please!) This place is a MUST. They feature about 15 different California vintners at a time, so you've got tons of variety at your fingertips. They'll start off with a preference consultation: "What are you in the mood for?" Crisp whites, meaty reds, earthy Pinot, buttery Chard? Just give them a few key words, and voila! they'll have a tasting lined-up for your scrutiny (and pleasure, of course.) These generous, customized tastings are complimentary because they "just know you'll find something you'll want to take home". It's true. After a very fun and informative tasting with spunky Sami, we were hooked on a couple of lovely bottles. The best part is being able to taste from multiple producers, who all have different styles of wine making. So, there really is something for everyone. Taste away 'til you find it! What a fantastic place! My mom and I found this place on Yelp (thanks!) to add to our Black Friday trifecta of cheese, sparkling wine, and slightly less bubbly wine. There are 11 wineries here, and over 70 wines - but no tasting fee! Serving the wine in variety-based "flights" is genius - and I quite liked Sammi, the gal who tried to figure out what we liked. She did - and unfortunately, while my budget doesn't include $45 bottles of wine, we found some quite delicious substitutes to come home with us. It was FUN to sip wine here. Rather than a particular winery trying to sell their wine, despite what you may like in a particular variety, we had a personable sommelier who attempted to cater to our palettes. It worked, too! Having wine of the same grape variety, but from several wineries, helped pinpoint qualities that I might not have put a name to before. Where I can readily identify different varieties of craft beer, I am not so experienced with wine. I was also delighted to hear that it wasn't so ridiculous for me to taste pork and roast beef in a wine. With no tasting fee, very generous and informative sommeliers, and a lovely atmosphere, this is exactly the kind of place that you'd want to go to in order to figure out what you actually like in your fermented grapes. It also makes buying that wine very comfortable and easy. Thank you, Locals! Please don't change - this is the sort of low-pressure, educational environment that I love. Loved it! Very relaxed atmosphere with a great selection of local and international wines to sample. It was particularly nice to be able to pick almost anything from their list without being told it'd be extra to try that particular wine. The people there were also extremely friendly and easy to talk to, none of that nose in the air attitude even from those who were bona fide wine connoisseurs. The fact that the wines that you taste here you can't get anywhere else is a big selling point to me. If I go all the way here to get some wine it'd better be something I can't get while I am grocery shopping. Also if I can get better for cheaper at Trader Joe's there's really no point hehe. Came out with a bottle of Sangiovese and a bottle of a very nice (and surprisingly inexpensive) Malbec. Would definitely go back next time :). read more

The people that work there and the owners, Carolyn, are all very friendly and want to showcase every wine. They explain each one and doing tastings in threes - able to taste 3 Zins side by side from different wineries.
