Small family winery, tastings are by reservation only. We came up during Alexander Valley wine month for a free tasting. We were welcomed with a splash of Sauvignon Blanc. The winery is on top of a hill, so the patio has gorgeous views of the Alexander Valley. We had a preset tasting of their Chardonnay, Merlot and Cab. They were kind enough to offer a tasting of one other wine of our choosing. We chose the melon de bourgogne. What a fun, bright wine. We really enjoyed it and brought home a bottle! They're a direct to consumer winery so we will have to come back for more wine next time! read more

My boyfriend and I were camping and wanted to try a winery nearby since we were in Sonoma. It was around 3:30 on a Wednesday and every place was closed. We called the Robert Young estate and were able to seat us for a tasting! When we arrived the hostess gave us a splash of their sauvignon blanc and sat us right away. The list of tastings they had were pretty good; I believe it was a chardonnay, merlot, and 2 cabernet sauvignon. Tyler was a great host! He gave us a little history with the estate, and answered all of our questions (we're still new to wine). Although we came a little later, we did not feel rushed at all. Absolutely incredible vineyard, views, staff and wine! This is a must if you are anywhere near Alexander Valley. I highly suggest a tour of this historic estate. Our tour of Robert Young Estate was different, in that we don't drink and were interested in the agriculture side of the operation. Robert Young Winery started off promising with welcome drinks and being seated, but that's where the hospitality ended. I don't usually post reviews but this experience compelled me to do so. We were explicitly told to be patient and that someone would get to us. Nearly 50 minutes later, not a single host or server had checked on us--no update, no acknowledgment, nothing. The winery was not packed: maybe half a dozen groups total, with several empty tables visible. There was simply no excuse for the complete lack of service. At one point, my companion attempted to make eye contact with a female host, only to be blatantly ignored. It was uncomfortable and frankly disrespectful. That said, I do acknowledge that one host eventually reached out to recognize their shortcomings, which I appreciated. I can also honestly say the place itself is lovely and the ambiance is very nice. I've visited wineries extensively--both internationally (Australia and New Zealand) and locally--and I have never experienced hospitality this poor. Wine tasting is as much about service as it is about the wine, and this was a masterclass in how not to treat guests. This review is coming from a place of tough love. Our tasting was scheduled for a 1 1/2 hour tasting on a rainy day in February. We were greeted at the door and welcomed inside the Scion House. We were seated in a cozy room with a view of the vineyards. We had a charcuterie board and an assortment of wines including Rose, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. We had a wonderful time chatting with our host and sampling the signature wines from the Robert Young Estate Winery. Before we knew it, we were there for 2 hours. I had a very bad experience here I didn' know you had to make a reservation but they were able to get us in. An older man was serving us and started pouring us wine immediately before we even sat down but didn't ask us if we wanted to do a tasting we thought he was just being nice but we asked if we could buy a bottle and he was very rude to us saying that if we weren't going to do a tasting we had to move to a different table way in the back. We were confused because he never asked us what we wanted to do he acted like we were not good enough to be there if we weren't tasting. The winery is very clean and the outside area has a fire pit and heaters. RY swines are only sold at the winery, so if you like something buy it during your tasting. I work in the industry, and my "regular" job takes me up to Ukiah. On the way home, I get a chance to do a little tasting just to see what's out there and take a little break while driving back to the East Bay. Stopped by on a Monday, not knowing that they prefer advance reservations. They were not busy, and allowed me to taste. I work for a winery in Livermore, so it's great to visit other regions in northern California. Staff was really friendly and unpretentious. They treated me extremely well. The grounds are really beautiful. Took home a couple of bottles: a 21 Merlot, and a 21 Cab Sauv. I was really impressed tonight when I opened my Merlot to have with dinner, and noticed they use Diam corks. For people who are unaware, these corks are not cheap. I don't care how lovely your view is or how wonderful your wine might be, if you are rude to potential customers you are off of my Sonoma list forever. As we were standing around admiring the view and contemplating ordering a bottle of wine, my elderly mother way down at one of the tables. One of the Hostesses came over and rudely said "I don't know who any of you are, but I need this table.". I looked at her shocked, and said I didn't realize we needed a reservation. Had a wonderful weekend in wine country, and this was one of our favorite wine tasting experiences. First of all, the wine was all excellent - got a bottle of their flagship Scion Cabernet Sauvignon, which was amazing, the Malbec, which was delicious, the AV Cabernet Sauvignon, which was also incredible, and the Sauvignon Blanc, which was also really good. Second, the tasting room, patio and view was stunningly beautiful, Third, our wine pourer, Harry, was out of this world. He has a background and experience in the wine industry, and was really knowledgeable, but also incredibly funny, We could have hung out with him all afternoon bantering and sipping wine. Nicki Young, part of the Young family, was also so accommodating and helpful, even calling our next wine tasting appointment to let them know we were running a little late. We love this place. Finally got "out" after months of Covid isolation. This was the perfect treat, perfect day, perfect wines and service. Thanks to McKenzie and Robert for all your kindness and wonderful information. We did the "Scion" experience which included higher end wines and a lovely food pairing plate per person. They are known for their Cabs though I am more fond of their Chardonnay's. It is, for the time being, reservation only, as are most wineries in our area. The experience and wines are HIGHLY recommended. Small production - just about 4K cases a year - only sold at the winery or a few local restaurants - do yourself a favor and go here! read more

The view here is absolutely AMAZING. Winery was quiet and not busy at all. We called ahead for a reservation for a party of 8. The wines weren't great and the service was subpar. Our host seemed to be working a weekend job rather than wine being his passion. He served and answered a few questions but there was nothing outstanding about the experience. The Charcuterie Board was actually really nice. Other wineries should take note. I would visit again for the view and good pictures, not the wine. read more

I was looking online for a wine tasting experience we could bring our dogs to and this place popped up on bringfido. I'm so happy to have found it, reservations were easy online but you can also book over the phone. Everything is spaced out and the grounds are beautiful. We met the grandson and had a wonderful time learning about the wines and history of the winery. The outdoor tasting area is beautiful and we had a great time going through their estate tasting. My favorites with the chard and cabs. We ended up taking 4 bottles home. FYI you get the tasting fee waived with purchase of 2 bottles. Highly recommend visiting here if you're in the area. Also keep in mind they don't sell their bottles anywhere so if you find something you like, make sure to stock up. read more

Great location but watch for the bait and switch. Was told by our server Scott that because I was a wine grower I would get a 30% discount only to find out at check out that it was only 20% and then was called the next day by Robert, the owner, that they could not honor that because I did not have a web site or a tasting room so that I would only get a 10% discount which is the normal club member discount. What a way to get someone to join your club. I will honor my commitment and keep my membership for the year but will not be renewing. read more

Robert Young is truly a special place to visit we had a wonderful time with our golden retriever and Robert was kind enough to let us come try their wine on their patio even though we didn't have a reservation and they were fully booked up we spent hours there just talking and trying their 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon and it was very special! the color was rich and dark - we are by no means wine officianados so all I can say is: it was delicious and special! We enjoyed the gorgeous scenery and the wait staff was so kind attentive - it felt as if we were transported from busy city life to calmer, greener pastures. Time felt slower, and there was soft sunlight & warmth (even in February!) & we cannot wait to come back with friends - next time we'll plan ahead & make a reservation for wine tasting so we can learn more about the beautiful grounds and family history. We attended a magical wedding here. Ahhh, nothing like the enchanting scenery of being surrounded by grape vines from a winery. The wedding was well-run, with a wedding planner in attendance at all times. Every detail was carefully planned and executed. Food, from the passed appetizers, to the dinner of salad, steak and salmon, and dessert bar were all delicious. The servers were well trained and efficient. Parking is ample, but note one needs to park at the bottom of the hill, and get shuttled up by a provided van for safety reasons. We had a fantastic experience at Robert Young! We did the Scion Experience tasting. I do not eat meat so I received only cheese and my husband's plate had meat and cheese. We were greeted with a Chardonnay that was so yummy - it reminded us of a hard butterscotch candy. Once we started tasting the reds, we fell in love with Bob's Burn Pile Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Thomas Meek Cabernet Sauvignon. The views are absolutely gorgeous. Robert Young is a good example of a winery doing it right. The folks here are very friendly, and more than happy to tell you about the (very interesting) history of the place, the family history, and how they make the wines, etc. Nothing pretentious here, just a good, genuine vibe, all about having fun. Pours are generous, and tasting fees are refundable with a bottle purchase. (Take note, all you poseur wineries who say nobody does that!!) We especially liked the Chardonnays, and enjoyed the entertaining wine presentation from our hostess, Erin. Prices are in line with similar wineries in the Russian River area... the quality shows and it's worth it. read more
