We got a couple of orders of their country fried steak. Having spent time in Texas we are picky about good country fried steak. I'm happy to say theirs is great. Crispy with good gravy. Location: Lochsa Lodge is nestled in an absolute perfect slice of Bob Rossian heaven, completely surrounded by happy (not-so) little trees, cradled by bejeweled peaks, blanketed by a gemstone sky, and always with the soothing uterine rushing of the nearby river the winds around it on two sides. It is ASMR paradise! Walking and hiking trails sprout off in all directions from the parking area and there are more just a short drive away including a lake alive with jumping fish and a hot spring. Rooms: The attention to detail in the cabins is truly unique; from the overall buckles on the curtains and the small wooden duck friend on the windowsill to the crisp snow white linens and the makeup face towel. Everything has been thought of. The bed was generously laden with pillows, allowing us to choose precisely our individual comfort needs. The windows were screened allowing us to open them for a wonderful breeze to flow through in the afternoons without bringing in any uninvited guests. The cabins are also just far enough apart that you have your own sense of privacy and escapism but also just close enough together for a friendly 'howdy' with the neighbors as we passed by on our way to the lodge. Service/Culture: This brings me to the culture of the lodge which is where it's real uniqueness shines. The lodge isn't just dog friendly, it's dog positive. Dog lovers will understand the difference. There's a whole shared culture built around the love of dogs. You don't have to bring your dog to enjoy your stay, by any means, but if you love spending time with your dog there is no better choice! Everywhere we went we enjoyed socializing and interacting with other guests and their dogs and letting them say hi to our dog and sharing trail tips. There are bag stations so the grounds remain immaculate and pine fresh and everyone was very conscious of dog etiquette such as leashing and asking before petting. It was dog culture personified but beyond that the owners bring this very welcoming family vibe to the lodge that carries through their staff. It is a perfect oxymoron: it has a stunning restaurant with five star food, a gift shop, a general store, complimentary bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, an impeccably manicured lawn, WiFi, and all the appearances, amenities, and luxuries of a city hotel married beautifully with the culture and emotional comfort of your favorite summer camp. In Closing: Would I recommend? YES! In fact, I already have. I spent very little time interacting with technology while at Lochsa (because there were just better things to do, tbh) but when I did, it was to tell my sister, my dog sitter, and my besties that they absolutely had to schedule their next vacations here. What a little gem in Northern Idaho! We made reservations to stay at the Lodge on our Glacier trip last year. This lodge is full service. They have cabins, a restaurant, a gas station, and a small convenience store. We stayed in a cozy cabin during our stay. I don't know what people expect from a place surrounded by nature but expect bugs and mosquitoes. The restaurant is a gem. The food was fantastic during both dinner and breakfast the next day. We loved our stay and didn't want to leave. Lochsa Lodge is must stop when driving through Highway 12. read more

I would rate the staff (especially the bartender) a big ZERO if I could. We took the Lolo Motortrail 83 miles one way with 5 other couples. First night was ok but our second day was awful. The bartender named Matt was condescending and over the top rude to all 12 of us but decided to make even nastier comments to one of the other ladies in our party. He was so rude we left without dinner that night and breakfast the morning we left. I know for a fact we will not recommend them to anyone. Very bad vibe with some of the staff and one of the owners. We had a group of 12 people staying in cabins at the lodge for two nights. we arrived after an 83 mile ATV ride across the Lola trail. our first evening and dinner in the lodge was great food and service. The next morning food over cooked and poor service. Second night dinner was even worse service, Matt one of the servers told my wife to sit at two of the picnic tables on the deck, after we sat at the two tables in the shade, he told us to move to the next table that was in the Sun. we questioned this and he said the dinner rush was coming. Some of us had various cups with drinks ( water, beer, drinks) he advised us that we could not bring any container in regardless of what's in it. also said another server would bring our silverware and take drink orders. She arrived with and attitude of dislike towards our entire group. she also told us to remove our containers, which we did. Matt returns to take our orders and tells us we cannot order any alcohol because we have been in the lawn area all day socializing and drinking. he said he had a fresh pot of ice tea for us. He also seemed to have an attitude towards our group. He proceeded to ask what we want to drink, my wife said "water" Matt replied "around here we learn to say please in the first grade". with that we all looked at each other and said they are not getting any of our money. Matt replied you can talk to the owner who's inside. I went in and introduced myself to the owner Rueben for and asked "what have we done to receive this kind of treatment? Rueben replied that three of his waiters have complained about us and if you're rude to them the will be rude back to you. I realized I was not going to get anywhere and our entire group left. There is no other place to eat within 30 plus miles plus we are all on ATV 's so we cannot drive on the highway. This was a return trip for many of our group and first time for some. In the end we never could figure out why the three wait staff had issues with us. After breakfast we spent the entire day on their lawn area playing corn hole and socializing. During this time, the grounds keepers approached about mowing the lawns ( very nice young men) they told us to stay where we were and they would mow around us, then we could move, we then went to the river for a couple hours, the. back for an attempted dinner. It appeared that they were Jealous because we were enjoying a great day relaxing. We asked other guests if we were to loud or interruptive, three separate groups said no and they thought about joint us. So the owner's quote on there website of "Lochsa lodge to provide welcome, happy atmosphere; cool vibe and energy here is a great location" is far from the truth if Matt, Alexis or Shelly are working. If Brad and the wait staff from Sunday evening (Aug 10) are working you'll have a great time. Sadly this group of 6 couples will not be back until new ownership happens. oh and by the way the dinner rush that Matt told us was coming, never happened. I wish I could write a good review for this place but I need to be honest. This is the first place my husband and I have ever left early knowing that we were not going to get our money back. There are some very things important that they don't tell you or make obvious in the listing. First of all, it's not obvious that they are not in Lolo. They are an hour away on a winding mountain road. That would have been fine except that my husband had planned a guided fishing trip that left out of Missoula at 5 AM. We thought we were 15 minutes away from Missoula, but we were an hour and 15 minutes away from Missoula. He ended up getting a room in Missoula for the night before which cost us an additional $250. And yes, once we discovered that and I went back to the website to look, I see that it's on the website, but it is far from obvious on the website. Also, unless you are in the dining room there's no Wi-Fi. Again, that would be fine if that's what your expectation was. But they don't make it clear on the website. Unfortunately my husband had a couple of phone calls to make about his mother will. Even in dining room the Wi-Fi was too weak for a phone call. Again, that would be fine! But that's the kind of thing they need to tell you in advance. In addition, we booked this place thinking that it was going to be a quiet retreat. It is not a quiet retreat. Because they have the only gas pumps for miles, my day consisted of listening to large groups of motorcycles and ATVs come and go from the gas pumps. Extremely loudly. The last straw for us was when I was sitting on my back porch trying to get some quiet privacy. I turned to my left to see that a group of motorcyclists was setting up their tents within 2 yards of my porch and one of them was changing his pants right in front of me. As a kicker, when we checked out I wanted to talk to the desk clerk. When I told the waitress who 'greeted' me, she was very rude to me and told me I didn't need to do anything, I could just leave. When I insisted that I needed to speak with someone she said the same thing again In a very rude tone of voice. I was so over it by then I just left without speaking with anyone. My husband and I are NOT picky. We love to stay at rustic cabins throughout the west but none of this was what we had anticipated. It was certainly not what we had paid for. We packed up and got a room at the old faithful inn in Yellowstone. Best decision we ever made. read more

Bartenders and waiters were practically non-existent and when you did manage to get someone to help, the attitude was extremely rude. They acted as though you owed them something and should be grateful they were even there to help. The only good part was the place was beautiful but not worth the money. We rented their largest Premier cabin last July(2023), and the beds were terrible, rock hard, especially the king bed and the queen wasn't much better, I had to sleep on the leather couch. We found that this particular cabin did not have a kitchen sink, rather all the water had to come from a small bathroom basin. We visited their small store to buy some bottled water and to our surprise they were sold out and didn't have any idea as to when to expect a delivery. We ate at the Lodge's restaurant and the food wasn't spectacular, we left one day early given the uncomfortable accommodations. We would not have given any stars and will not visit again. Came out with a group of friends for a little December weekday trip to the hot springs. With all the snow it was just magical scenery! Very affordable for a group of 7 in one of the cabins that holds 8 (albeit, tight). We enjoyed dinner that wasn't amazing, but good enough for a small resort out in the woods. There's a little convenience store for anything you might've forgotten, as well as small-chopped wood for keeping up your fire in your cabin. This gave me all the Christmas movie feels without a big price tag. Staff was friendly :) read more

The lodge is in a wonderful location. The restaurant and bar are really nice and you can tell the owners care about the place. The issue, it seems, is that in the evening the employees are left to run the place and they are more interested in hanging out in the kitchen (and at least one drinking what appeared to be a margarita). Took 10 minutes to be seated and then no server for another 20 so finally left. If you are passing through stop for a beer in the bar or even a meal if you can get service. If you own the place and are reading this you are losing business, we watched at least 5 people finally leave. read more

I have been staying at the Lochsa Lodge, with friends, EVERY summer since 2003, except for the COVID timeframe. There has NEVER been an issue with lodging reservations. Most of the reservations over those years have been for 2 - 14 cabins, for one (1) night stay. A group of us enjoy traveling and I always coordinate the bookings for our events. I recently cancelled reservations for 3 cabins that I had reserved for the June 2023 timeframe due to one of the group members being diagnosed with cancer. A couple weeks later, reviewed my credit card account and noticed that the cancellation fee was considerably more than I had expected. I called the lodge and asked to speak with one of the owners (Matt) to discuss the issue; he was not available, so I left a message requesting a return phone call. The owner never returned my call. After leaving 2 additional messages, over the next 3 days, I received an email from Matt demanding that I stop harassing his employees and that he was NOT going to call me to discuss the issue. This type of response from a business owner was totally unexpected and unprofessional; In NO WAY did I harass his employees, rather I simply left a message with the desk agents asking that the Owner please return my call. The Owner (Matt) refused to call me in order to clarify the billing discrepancy. I remain confused at Matt's unprofessional and defensive attitude regarding this issue along with his REFUSAL to discuss it with me over the phone; a simple phone call would have resolved my concerns. Truly Disappointed with the Owner's refusal to speak with me on this issue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unable to do a separate review; therefore, to continue: My review of our stay at Lochsa Lodge during the summer of 2022. The summer of 2022 was the first time we had visited the lodge since the new owners, Matt & Ruben purchased the property in the December 2021 timeframe. After checking in for our overnight stay, I later returned to the restaurant to request a complimentary container of ice for the cabin; this had been the policy under the previous owners for 18+ years. I was met by one of the owners, Matt, who said, Quote "Move out of the way, you're blocking my waiters entrance to the kitchen"; this was not a request, rather a DEMAND. I explained that I simply wanted a complimentary container of ice for the cabin; his response, in a sarcastic tone: "We don't provide ice for the cabins; if you want ice, purchase it from our convenience store; you reserved a cabin and it does not come with ice. With that being said, he departed the area. That was my welcome to Lochsa Lodge, by one of the new owners. I never had a chance to say "it's nice to meet you and we wish you the best of success in your new business". The restaurant food and service, that evening, was below what we had experienced in prior years; the waiters were bouncing between tables, obviously understaffed, we waited 20+ minutes for our beverages to arrive, my wife's steak was overcooked, my fish-in-chips was cold, we cancelled a second round of drinks because of the slow service. The cancelled drinks appeared on our final bill, which we noticed and had removed from the bill. One member of our party went to the bar area to purchase a our drinks, only to learn that the bar was CLOSED; this is in the 8:00pm timeframe. All together, not an enjoyable evening. I am not a fan of writing reviews, so I decided to let this evening go without further mention; I equated it to new ownership, new staff and assumed that next time would be better. After this last episode regarding cancellation fees and Matt's refusal to call me, I consider it appropriate to bring the 2022 reservation to light; as it definitely shows a negative trend in customer satisfaction at Lochsa Lodge. As mentioned previously, we cancelled our 2023 reservations, therefore I am unable to compare our experiences from 2022 to 2023; Maybe conditions have improved at Lochsa Lodge since last year. On a motorcycle trip through Lolo Pass so we decided to give the Lochsa Lodge a try for lunch. My wife and I both ordered the lunch special which consisted of a very large huckleberry cream cheese / turkey wrap. A choice of fries, curly fries, or salad was offered as a side. We both went for the salad. The turkey wrap was excellent and nearly too much to eat. The salad was fresh and just the right size. The prices here are a bit more than what you would normally pay but there is value in the amount they give you. The special we had was $10.95. Service was very attentive and friendly. And when not serving customers the staff was constantly cleaning up around the restaurant. We would definitely come back. read more

This is such a bummer to write, because we used to love this place. My whole family has been visiting for years. On our last trip, we booked a cabin w. a bathroom (it's a thing). They had given it away before we arrived and put us in a cabin without a bathroom, which was extremely problematic for people who have health issues. To make it worse, it was mice infested. So gross. We had to throw away half the food we brought. Insult to injury: they refused to refund us a night when we chose to leave early because of their mistake. Other family members in the party were also overcharged. (They received a bill for an extra charge for pets... which they did not bring) The restaurant food has also gone down hill. Turned out to be epic cold subartic temps and pipes at our home were freezing and we had to stay home to deal with that issue. We have had a large group of people (15+) stay at the Lochsa Lodge for the last 9 years. We will not be back and will try out other places down the road. Over the last several years we have noticed a significant decline in service and quality in both the dining area as well as the lodging facilities. At the same time of this decrease in quality and service there as been a significant increase in price. We learned that in the last several years there has been a change in ownership and this appears to be the main cause of the issues. In our last stay this Summer (2023), we had the opportunity to meet one of the owners - Matt - and it suddenly became very apparent as to why the Lodge has been headed in a poor direction. Matt is very unprofessional, defensive, and all together an unpleasant person to deal with. We had a disabled senior veteran with us that he demonstrated little respect for. I thought maybe he was just having a bad day - but if you don't believe me - look through other reviews that mention him. This appears to be his overall approach to business. I won't go into all of the details regarding our conversations with him - however to say he apparently knows very little about hospitality and/or how to treat people. I expect he will drive this beautiful Lodge into the ground even more than he already has. The location of the Lochsa Lodge is awesome. It's beautiful there. The amenities in the cabins are 'rustic' - many without A/C (which is fine overall) and some without bathrooms (be sure you know this before reserving). The cleanliness has decreased drastically. Our toilet smelled strongly of urine as if the outside had not been cleaned. Basic maintenance has gone to the wayside and many things are falling apart. When we asked about why such a drastic increase in prices of lodging - we were told they were making many improvements. I have to say that at least from the outside and for the guests overall - there are no visible improvements. This last year there were no chairs and or picnic tables around the cabins as in years past. The staff are overworked and it shows. Service in the restaurant is slow and the staff are overall fairly unhelpful. If the owner (Matt) treats and models for his staff like he treats his guests, this makes sense. The food is decent - although nothing to rave about. Overall if you are looking for a place to stay for a decent price - find somewhere else either before or after the Lochsa. If you do stay there and money and/or quality is not an issue for you - don't have any complaints as they will fall on deaf ears and you will just walk away more frustrated than when you started. I expect the owner will respond to this review with all of his 'justifications' on things. Read between the lines and you will see his true colors which reflect the kind of stay you will have at Lochsa Lodge. read more

We have stayed at the wonderful Forest Service campground nearby and enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the lodge. This time our travels were by car, and we stayed in one of the cabins (#16). Very rustic -- but very clean and comfortable. In winter months the wood stove would be a fun amenity. The grounds here are park-like, with an abundance of colorful hanging baskets all around. A few years ago, a new owner bought the lodge, and the change has been for the worst. I had been staying at Lochsa Lodge every Fall for the past 15 years. This year I booked again but, unfortunately, I required surgery less than 30 days before my reservation. I went to cancel my reservation and they charged me the full $670 for cancellation of a three-day reservation even though their draconian policy states differently. I'm still working to hold them to their policy. Nevertheless, I've never seen such a draconian cancellation policy. Beware of the last two sentences of the policy. "Full payment is due within 30 days prior arrival. Our cancellation policy 30 days or more prior to arrival equals a $25 cancellation fee. Our cancellation policy within 30 days prior to arrival, but more than 7 days prior arrival equals a one night stay, plus a $25 processing/cancellation fee. Cancellation within 7 days of arrival equals the full amount of the reservation, with no refund. COVID is NOT a reason to cancel without penalty - Cancellation policy applies in cases of personal illness & injury. Weather is NOT a reason to cancel without penalty - we are open 365 days a year in all weather conditions." This used to be my favorite place to stay but, sadly, I doubt I will ever take a chance and stay there again. read more

After arriving at the Lochsa Lodge on a tour of the area and being told they didn't take reservations, I walked through with my group to the back lawn to await their verdict, passing at least 3 or 4 tables that were marked with a "reserved" sign. While we were understandably a large group, we did spend the rest of the hour waiting outside and out of the way, taking photos or chatting amongst ourselves. I visited our van back in front of the restaurant only to witness the co-owner Matt Hohenstreet come barreling through into the parking lot in his swanky jeep, covering several of his guests in dust and rubble who yelled in pain and cursed at him. He hopped out, flipped off those same customers, and stormed through the entrance to confront our gracious and wonderful tour hosts. I went back inside and caught Matt escorting our group, piece by piece back out the front door. He was ranting about one of our members pushing his server (which is simply not possible) and when asked to produce the CCTV footage he claimed they had, he refused. We were sent back out into the heat with no reception and no way for our hosts to find other accommodations because the lochsa lodge staff refused to lend us use of their phone (which seems to be an ongoing issue given several other reviews to have had that same problem). A member of our group bullied and accused of violence, an inability to handle a large reservation, a long-winded and petty post by Matt on the restaurant's page calling out our members, etc. pitiful job by Matt and his staff - let's see the footage Matt! #letsseethefootagematt read more

I don't see what the hype is about with the restaurant. This joynt was recommended to me by someone in California, so I figured I'd check it out while passing through. Big mistake! I ask if they serve up strong coffee and I'm told they do, so I sit outside on the gorgeous deck and order up some joe and vittles. The service was disjointed, haphazard and awfully slow, even for a laid back mountain place that just wernt suh dang bizee Buford. Coffee arrives and it is warm brown shit water in a mug. The corned beef hash and eggs wasn't much better. I decide to forego the remainder of the meal and save my appetite for a delicious Basque dinner awaiting me in Boise. That said, I might consider stopping here again, but only for a cold beer on the deck, provided that their beer selection is better than the crappy breakfast I had. I seated myself outside on the deck, and got to experience the joy of two older Canadian entrepreneurs banter with 3 young women over a mosquito repellant essential oil mixture. They were trying to broker a deal for the recipe to market it. The entertainment distracted me from how long it was taking a waitress in a relatively uncrowded establishment to give me the menus (~15 mins) then take my drink order (~30 mins). It should never take that long for an establishment to greet you, even if they do have open seating. The food was awesome. I had the salmon burger. They were out of the sauce listed, but they offered me a perfectly acceptable substitute. The huckleberry lemonade was awesome, and the atmosphere was amazing! read more

Booked a night away for my husband and I, and we were very pleased! We had an adorable cabin with a woodstove, and two Q beds. This place was as clean as could be! We had dinner Saturday night and it was outstanding; we both had the Ribeye. The Blackberry Cobler was absolutely fabulous! I almost ordered it for breakfast the next day... but I ordered the Huckleberry Pancake... singular. It covered the entire plate! And it was packed with flavor. My friend and I took our families here for a quick relaxing vacation as we are both nurses and needed downtime. There is no WiFi- totally fine with that. Service was subpar. We arrived just before 6 pm PST but they run on MST- but in PST. The restaurant was closing but made us food- in which the owner, Matt, told me it was kindness for them to offer us food. Um, isn't that just business? Food tasted like cardboard and expensive- fish and chips. My husband wouldn't even eat it and he is not a picky eater. Restaurant closed for the remainder of our stay so no access to food- was unaware of this. The lady that checked us in, took our money for the food told us breakfast would be served to 11 am- I am not 100% certain of the time she stated. We had to drive 52-53 miles one way to food. We had only had 1 full day to go to hot springs- most of the day was taken up by driving for food. Linens had holes in them. Facebook messaged the lodge- no response- poor internet connection. I had tried to call but no answer. I don't like leaving voicemails so I didn't leave one. I work nights so I emailed- took me a few days because I work 6 nights in a row at a min. with many times more, and I am exhausted. The email I got back from the owner Matt said why on earth did I extend my stay and I was disingenuous. First, there was a error in making the reservation so when checking in I fixed it. I had been on property for 5 minutes or less. I paid for the two nights- where was I suppose to go? Give them free money? The customer service was terrible. What was suppose to be a relaxing break from the chaos of the world turned into a lot of time in the car and little time to appreciate the natural beauty of the area and enjoy the near by hot springs. Since management from this business has publicly (Facebook) lied about the incident which I'll describe, I want to preface this with a TLDR version regarding credibility. I was part of an extremely unpleasant incident at the restaurant earlier this month; it began when the large group I was a part of showed up for lunch and couldn't be seated despite having a reservation, and we were told not only that they didn't have a reservation for us, but that they don't take reservations. This stance has been repeated on LL's Facebook page. Things spiraled from there, but before we go there, why should you believe my version of this incident? Two reasons. 1) I was part of a tour group with which I was traveling for the first time. I stand to benefit in no way from this review, and if there were any doubt in my mind that perhaps a reservation had not been made, I'd be just as upset with the company that handled my tour. I know, unequivocally, that LL representatives have lied about this incident; that's why I'm torching them here, and not the tour company. 2) How can I be so sure? Very simple; had the hostess said, "We don't have a reservation for you," I wouldn't know whether the restaurant or the tour company dropped the ball. But she didn't say that; she said, and management has doubled down on this one, that "they don't take reservations." We were initially invited to wait in the outdoor area in the back, and when we went out there, we saw three picnic-style tables (their Facebook says one table seating 4-6 people; reality: 3 tables seating 6-8, but that's beside the point). Here's the point: Those three tables each had "table tent" style signs reading "Reserved" on them! So it's unequivocally false that they don't take reservations; they lied about it when we were there, and they continue to lie about it because they don't like the negative reviews they've gotten. And as a trained attorney, I'm quite familiar with the "Falsus in Uno" jury instruction, whereby a judge will instruct jurors that if they conclude that a witness has lied about one thing, they can conclude that that witness is unreliable and his/her entire testimony can be disregarded. So here's what happened: Although there were empty tables (the ones marked reserved), we were told that they only had three servers on duty, and they couldn't serve us at those tables. I believe (speculating here) that when they took the reservation, they either forgot that it was for a holiday (this was Memorial Day Monday), or they forgot about the reservation. Either way, they were woefully understaffed and unable to meet their professional obligation. We were told that we could wait around and be seated a few at a time as tables emptied out, so we began to wait. Some members of the party sat at those picnic tables, because they had umbrellas and it was a hot day. One of the members of the party was watching TV in the bar area and was told he had to leave. He was watching a sporting event, and when told to leave, he exited the bar area and told the server that he'd watch through the window. I believe (it's been just over 2 weeks now) he made some comment under his breath, which was somewhat understandable, as in addition to the unprofessionalism (and lie) about the reservation, staff (by which I mean the manager and the hostess) had been rather rude to us. Very shortly thereafter, we were abruptly asked to leave the premises, and told we had five minutes to do so. The server had alleged that our party member had shoved her. There was one witness to the interaction between him and the server, and that witness backed up our party member, saying that there was no physical contact. This was the second day of our tour group; I went on to spend a week with the guy who was accused, and he is among the most calm, level-headed people I've ever met. Moreover, he is a local with a law enforcement related occupation that he has held for years and would be in jeopardy of losing should he be involved in any assault/battery sort of incident. It's simply inconceivable that the event happened the way the server described it. As most of us left the premises immediately and peacefully, the accused member of our group calmly explained his version of the event to the manager, who sided with his employee. The following conversation took place with the manager and a different member of our party: "He didn't touch her!" "I've got security camera footage of that area." "Great! Let's see it and clear this up." "I don't have to show you." So who sounds like the liar? Hey M - $1000 to your favorite charity if you produce security cam footage that backs up your story. If I could give this place 0 stars I would Don't waste your time with this place, staff is so unprofessional and unfriendly as soon as me and my group walked into the place the women at the front gave us such a bad attitude. Didn't even get to eat at the place because they wouldn't seat us even thought we had reservations to be there they Just didn't want to waste there time with us so made up lies to get us out of the place. read more

Lochsa Lodge has amazing food and beer menu! I had the trout which was excellent and my wife had a smoked salmon salad which was equally delicious. So much food! Beers on the tap were great and diversified, all locally sourced in the Pacific NW. Beautiful views everywhere, especially behind the lodge by the fire pit and river. The cabin was very functional, but the mattress and pillows were a bit hard and noisy :) Getting in and out of bed woke up the light sleeper next to me. I would definitely stay again!!! read more

OUTSTANDING! I didn't stay here (I'm a perennially broke-ass hippie, so I camped in the forest nearby), but I would definitely consider doing so in the future, as I understand their rates are reasonable. As it was, I came here for breakfast one morning. I intended to just get coffee, but the restaurant smelled so good that we ended up staying to eat. We shared a huckleberry pancake and a scramble of some sort, and it was all AMAZING. Plus, we sat on the deck in the summer sunshine, overlooking the beautiful forest....and it was just wonderful. Service was SUPER friendly and amazing -- shout out to Marcus, our server. I would DEFINITELY come back here again. read more

FTR#100 After 35 kilometers on skis, you'll probably eat just about anything. Fortunately, I didn't have to. I had my choice: Beef, bison, or elk? Hand-cut Idaho French fries or curly? Moose Drool from Big Sky or Face Plant Doppelweizen from Bayern Brewing? Eat outside on the deck in sun and snow, with an outdoor fire pit crackling below? Sure, why not? It's good to have choices like this. I ate a memorable lunch here after an early March ski tour sponsored by the Missoula nordic ski club. The course began at Lolo Pass and ended at the Lochsa Lodge, which was the perfect spot to relax after the strenuousness of the event, surrounded by fifty of the fittest people that you are likely to find in the area (which is saying a lot). As the race organizers handed out prizes and free stuff giveaways (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/2zb6Bt-HdSy48OLJA9ou3A?userid=73DZUFYAXuycbJ_eEAox1Q), I soaked in the sun on the outdoor deck, not quite believing that the scene was real. I am not much of a competitive skier, compared to the types I was with, but I felt at home and was glad to have survived the trails with only two skinned forearms and random sore muscles. Fortunately, the Lochsa Lodge was the perfect place to convalesce. Their delicious bison burger with handcut fries and a pint of Face Plant (whose name was sadly all too true in my case) was much-needed medicine for the snow-blind soul. The Lochsa Lodge, in any other part of the US, might strike you as remote, wild, and ruggedly beautiful. It is all of these things, of course, and has the Lewis and Clark credentials to prove it. But by Bitterroot Mountain standards, the lodge is practically next door, just a hop, skip, and jump down US Highway 12 from Lolo Pass. It's been lovingly restored by the family owners after a 2001 fire, and the craftsmanship really shows: classic wooden cabin style updated for the twenty-first century; some of the most tasteful taxidermy I have ever seen (including the name of the hunter who "took" the game); an attractive library/meeting room, and a great bar/billiards section off of the main indoor dining area. The breakfast and dinner menus looked quite nice: wild salmon, rainbow trout, huckleberry French Toast, bison links, and special Sunday BBQs of chicken and ribs (in summer). I'll have to come back when the snow melts to try more (and bring my camera). This lodge is open 7 days a week 365 days a year. That's amazing around these parts, which makes this spot a haven for hunters, skiers, snowmobilers, hikers, hot springs fans, and pretty much anyone who happens to stop by for a meal, for a fill-up, or to rent one of their log cabin cottages. There is even WiFi in the main lodge. Lewis and Clark sure could have used that back in the day. Yelp exists for many reasons. For me, its core appeal has always been the chance to say something good about a hidden gem such as the Lochsa Lodge whose owners don't have the advertising budget to do a nationwide campaign. While locals don't need the Internet to find it, many others do. I'll drink a Face Plant to that. read more
