Worst customer service ever. I'm visiting Birmingham and bought the ticket and realized I bought the wrong date. Bought the ticket on a Monday for Friday the day I was leaving Birmingham. I called and got the answering machine telling me to email them. I emailed them Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. I stopped by at all different times when they said they were open online. Nobody was ever there. Finally received an email from someone FRIDAY saying they gave me a credit to use in future. I don't live there never coming back. I stop by to get reimbursed and finally someone showed up to work! I was told just to email customer service over and over again. That there's no corporate. No one to speak to. Locked In - Escape Games Near Me - Birmingham, Alabama

There are Escape Rooms which embody creativity, charm, community...and then there are places like Locked In, which are clearly out to exploit the popularity of Escape Rooms for as much money and little effort as possible. Let's start with the positive. While you can't get anyone on the phone no matter what, you can book online and we were able to successfully book as walk-ins. Our game master for all three games, Chad, was very courteous, professional, and worked with our schedule in order to get all three rooms done in a weekend. Other than the phone matter, we have no complaints in the customer service and scheduling department. Where we do take issue is production value and puzzle design. Each escape took place in a single, bare-bones room just like the one before it with just enough props to barely convey the "theme" of a Warehouse, Laboratory, and Classroom. The puzzle design was fairly weak, with gratuitous decoys, unsubstantiated leaps of "logic", and some required knowledge of difficult facts such as an obscure element on the periodic table. Oddly enough, we found their hardest room-the Classroom-the strongest room, with pretty tight design and just enough decoys to keep you on your toes. However, their easiest room-the Warehouse-just felt like a mess to us, with odd puzzle choices and too many frustrating and unnecessary dead-ends. If you do go here, USE YOUR HINTS. Even as experienced escapers, we found them necessary. Note that the location is surrounded in restaurants and bars, so if you come on a weekend, parking may be limited. The good news is that there are plenty of places to eat or grab a drink afterward. So, this place is fine if you want to do some Escape Rooms. But if you care at all about Escape Rooms, this place is just soulless. We are baffled that, according to Locked In's website, USA Today ranked them a Top #5 Escape Room. This was one of the best times that I have had in an "escape room" type of place. The guy who was there to check us in and get us situated in the room was very nice and his demeanor oozed that he really enjoyed his job. He explained everything to us very well and we enjoyed every minute. We only needed 1 more minute before we would have been able to get out of our room BUT we ran out of time......DARN CLOCK. Kicked off our anniversary weekend "doing something different". We were 'locked in' with 6 others that we met at that moment and we had so much fun! We unlocked the door in time and had a blast figuring out the clues. I came here with my family and friends on a Sunday afternoon. We were able to book the night before for a group of five. We chose an easy level as we were mostly first timers and chose the Museum room. Being a first timer I really enjoyed it! If you're not familiar with the premise you essentially are locked into a room and as a team you have to figure out the clues in order to "escape" the room. It was not at all scary ( I got this question a few times). I felt safe the entire time as you can exit the room if you need to for bathroom breaks (etc) as needed. It was definitely challenging even though it was an "easy" level. I recommend going with a group so that you can all put your heads together to crack the case. I look forward to going again soon and trying a more difficult level! PS- you are not allowed to bring your phones or bag/purses into your room. They have a little basket in the hallway just before you enter the room to store your items. Good luck! read more

Pretty fun outing. I did it in a group of 6. One person was with me, and a group of four was paired with us. We got out of the medium difficulty room in about 40 minutes without too much duress. There were about 10-15 separate puzzles that needed to be solved including some super basic cryptography. This could easily be a family outing, as I think a group of reasonably intelligent middle schoolers could solve the puzzles. read more

Before we tried Locked In, I was talking to someone who said they could think of much better ways to spend their money rather than waste it on this experience. I decided to give it a shot anyway and I'm so glad I did! 5 of us participated in "The Classroom" (the hardest and newest experience). You're given an hour to complete the challenge and we were able to finish with about 4 minutes to spare! We weren't quite sure to what to expect. None of this is scary or haunted. If you're concerned you might get "stuck" in the room, at any point you can press the green button next to the door to exit in to the hallway or to use the restroom. However, you are against the clock so try not to leave the room. The hour goes by quick! The overall goal is to find a 4 to 6 digit code to unlock the door before your time is up. The code is NOT in plain site. You will have to find clues that unlock different parts of the room to crack the code. If you're getting stuck on one thing, move on. Let someone else try and take a crack at it. Not everything in the room will be used so don't get too distracted. Time is of the essence so move fast! I highly recommend you give this a try -- I want to come back and try the other two challenges now! read more

This place is so fun. Much like the review I made for the other escape room place here in town, I just love the whole experience! You are locked in a room with a panic button by the door and, for one reason or another, you have one hour to get out. They set up the scenario by playing a short video and your time starts to tick away. Have no fear about being put together with strangers...I was concerned because I am a control freak, but the situation lends itself to teamwork, not conflict, so it's not as awkward as it may seem. Had to park down at the end of the strip mall it was in, and I am not sure we were in legal parking spaces, but we didn't get towed, so it all worked out. We did the Museum room. My wife and I decided to go check it out, we've been to a couple other breakout rooms and thought this would be fun. Long story short first we could not open the four lockers that lead to the next part of the game and after wasting a lot of our time we asked for help and they realized they had mixed up the locks making this part unwinnable. They came and fixed the issues and we continued with our game. Eventually we get stuck unable to proceed and the game ends.The staff came to show us what we needed to do to proceed he realized that the batteries were dead on the safe we were supposed to open which is why nothing we entered would work...We wasted an hour and 50$ on a game that could not be won simply because noone bothered to make sure the room was ready for us. We were told they could not refund us or let us talk to a manager and gave us an email to send our complaint to. We tried that and emails on their website to no avail. My husband and I did both of the escape rooms in Birmingham on our recent trip. We have done other escape rooms in other cities. While this one had a great location and appeared very nice from the outside, the clues in the room had no read them and made the room so difficult as to not be escapable. Specific criticisms include low batteries in some of the devices needed to solve the clues, very old technology that no one in the room knew how to use, and very esoteric concepts that in our experience we would not have been able to figure out even after we were told how to solve the room puzzle. We are still not sure that we could get out even after being shown how to do so some of the clues were so bizarre- this coming from people who have escaped every other room in escape games in other cities. If you are choosing between the two in Birmingham other breakout room in Homewood is better. read more

I have been through my share of escape rooms, and I don't have too high of praise for this one. The puzzles aren't that difficult compared to other escape places, and they try and drain your time by putting in distractores rather than good puzzles. This review and my review of the other escape place in Birmingham are pretty identical because the places are. You wont go wrong with either. This is such an amazing experience! You are locked in a room (don't worry they have a panic button by the door). They play a little video giving you a setup and then BAMM! you have 1 hour to escape. They have multiple rooms that have nothing to do with each other so you can keep going back to try something new. each room allows 8 people. You can book all 8 slots and go by yourself or you can just book what you need and you may or may not get paired with someone else. Parking is plentiful right next door. We did the Museum room. Locked in a room with a killer returning in 1 hour! Clues, lock boxes, lasers, keys, secret compartments! it was so much fun! As you find clues and progress you get free clues. We had a phone in the room we could call to redeem our clues. Missed the record by 12 seconds! If you have never done an escape adventure you must do this. If you have done them before this wont disappoint. read more

This is a great location. I went to two rooms here and they were both a lot of fun. We did a group of 8, all friends, and then another group of 4 with 4 strangers. We escaped both times, but the puzzles were challenging! It was awesome that everyone could spread out and find clues individually, so that while you were working on one clue, someone else might find something relevant and helpful. This does mean that you miss out on some of the clues since other people are solving them while you're focused on your task, but I think this actually adds to the teamwork aspect since everyone can play a role rather than having to do everything as a group which typically means one or two people doing most of the work while the others watch. I have only been to two other locations, but this one has been the best so far. read more
