So while my wife was going into day 2 of labor at the Kaiser hospital on the other side of the 101, I snuck away to grab some food for myself. I strolled into Lodge and grabbed a coffee and a veggie sandwich ( you know, to fill up on veggies again after living off of power bars the day before). I was so impressed by the sandwich and coffee that for the next two days of our hospital stay, I was back for coffee, pastries, and sandwiches everyday. And then once my wife had delivered our baby, I would plan our follow up doctor appointments so we could grab lunch or loaves afterwards. Do I have a bread problem? Maybe. I'm a huge (good) bread lover. Tartine is one of my favorite bakeries but they are sparse and expensive. This place definitely competes. Maybe not at the level of refinement of Tartine, but I think I like it better for that. Tartine can feel elite, pretentious and expensive. Lodge checks off the taste, quality, and attention to baking detail while maintaining good value. Really good, slow fermented bread. A great and wide selection of pastries and bread products. And surprisingly good coffee. I know I'm going to offend some people but Lodge is two shops away from a Blue bottle coffee, and I actually like Lodge breads coffee better. I definitely recommend this place. If you are driving by you should definitely stop in for a coffee, and grab a loaf of country bread for home (you would be missing an opportunity for epic breakfast toast at the very least), but if you are hungry I can recommend the BLT, veggie, and turkey sandwiches, and you cannot go wrong with any of the pastries they sell. Wow! It was a hot summer day when I saw the orange umbrella's and mists that drew me in. I literally came back three days in a row. The Shakshuka and the Ricotta Jam is addicting. I finally bought the Shakshuka sauce to make every morning at home. Parking is very easy. Outdoor seating only. The only downside is the Wi-Fi is shared by the plaza and only allows 30min of free Wi-Fi. There is nothing like a proper crumb and complex flavor that is pulled from choice grain and ground according to the species of bread--a bread that is complimented with an orchestra of other carefully chosen ingredients, then combined in a dough and skillfully baked under controlled conditions in a proper bread oven. There is nothing better that skillfully crafted bread it's an art. Unfortunately, Lodge doesn't quite get it. Consistency is off, it's over hydrated and baked in an inconsistent oven leaving dry and tasteless outer layers and nearly unfinished center, all the while neglecting crumb, which is too fine. All and all an uninteresting loaf. The connoisseur is further insulated by way too think slices...banana bread thick hunks. Yuck. I didn't ask for a bread bowl. Lodge goes one further in insulting the tastebuds. Order one of their Roasted Turkey sandwiches. These things are measured 4-1/2 thick! You get a full inch of terrible bread, 3 inches of romaine and a tomato, and a 1/2 inch of thin sliced flavorless cold restaurant-supply Turkey. Yuck, yuck, yuck. If bread is bread is bread to you then enjoy. The trendy atmosphere is nice. The outside tables a sweet touch. But if you love bread look elsewhere. Western bagel down the street concocts proper gluten and it's far less expensive. I did give Lodge one star because the counter help was courteous and attentive and zero stars wasn't a Yelp option. read more

Came here for a weekday brunch! This place is minimalist, and adorable. The storefront is small, there are a few two seater chairs inside and plenty of outside seating outside among the cute olive trees. There's lots of shade from the building across the walkway so it's really quite nice outdoor space. All the bread is baked in-house and is spectacular. We had their smoked fish plate. There gas fresh, fatty smoked lox, a creamy chunky lox dip, served with a tart yogurt sauce I think it may have had sumac in it, it was lovely. The plate came with rye toast, that was loaded with seeds and was hearty and delicious. We also had the ricotta toast with blueberry jam. That dish is so rich and fabulous it can be a birthday party. The ricotta is fine and creamy and blueberry jam is more of a blueberry compote. It's served on a huge piece of sweet and doughey bread... Outside the buns a thin layer of crispness while the inside had a flakey texture similar to a croissant. The simplicity of perfectly cooked fatty bacon, eggs, arugula and mayo made this sammie worth every penny. The avocado toast is perfectly tangy and crunchy. The almond croissant was huge and a true 'gourmet' croissant, but my preference would have been to have it baked shorter time so it is less browned. The drip coffee had so much half and half in it it might as well just have been milk. There might have been some coffee in there. As is becoming more common, you are asked to tip on the terminal before they have actually done anything. How do you know if they deserve a tip? I asked for a plate and they said because they are closing they cant give me a plate because then they would have to wash it. UMMM OK. Second time I called at 3:20 to place an order (they were closing at 4) the guy told me that if its something warm then they cant do it because they close at 4 (40 minutes later) and they turned the ovens off. -_- This is my third experience - i order Challah on order chow and they charged me. My husband goes in and says I have a pick up for Ida and the guy says ok then turns the tablet for him to pay $62 (my husband assumes i ordered that much and I didnt pay) so he pays for it then he realizes its not even our order and that my actual order was canceled because they ran out. All in all it wasnt a 1 time experience and even the 1 time its not like they messed up my food order... they told me i couldnt have a plate... or i cant order a warm item 40 min prior to closing. I really dont think that the owners are involved in the day to do or have any idea that their employees refuse customers this way. I'm not a big fan of crusts around the bread but Bae said that's the part where you get to taste all the flavors. As for me, the actual bread was soft and delicious! Please note that the prices are a little bit expensive for an average sandwich in the Valley but the portions are BIG! A plate of sandwich is already good for 2-3 people. Bicycle Coffee is their caffeine supplier. I live around this area for a good amount of time and I'm just so happy that we finally have good coffee again after Peet's left us!! Price: $$. Around $30 for one sandwich and two coffee including tip. This price range has becoming a norm around this area. I'm not complaining since the food especially the bread is just good. Parking: A LOT. It's located in a plaza that has very few shops around. You can find a parking ANYTIME of the day. Service: AMAZING. The ladies behind the counter give good recommendations and know a lot about the bread/food they offer. This is not a sitdown bakery/brunch spot so you have to go to cashier and order your food. Overall, I'm beyond grateful that this place opened in Woodland Hills! For me, the bread and its good coffee is what sets apart from the other brunch spots in the area! My girlfriend brought home a cinnamon roll and a chocolate croissant. I ate a couple pieces of the croissant, they didn't have chocolate even though I saw there was lots of chocolate. Look I'm not pointing fingers but... *cough girlfriend cough*. Regardless of the lack of chocolate it was the best croissant I've ever had! So good I wasn't even mad about the chocolate. I had a large piece of the absolutely giant cinnamon roll...three days after my girlfriend brought it home. I didn't do it justice, I know. It was still so damn delicious. Before trying it, I wasn't excited about the orange zest lavneh. I know cinnamon rolls to have super sugary, heavy icing. If you'd have asked me before I would have said all cinnamon rolls HAVE to have heavy, sugary icing. Man I was so wrong. The lightness compliments the roll without overpowering it. Purchased the ancient grain loaf and it was perfect for making avocado toast at home. The fresh baked loaf crust was not too tough and the texture of the loaf was perfect. I will start by saying that the food here is great, which is why we have been coming back here time and time again. However, our last experience has been subpar. My family was cold and we wanted to get some sun so we tried to close the umbrella to get some heat. As soon as we did that, the "general manager" came out yelling at us to not touch the umbrella. I explained that we want a place with some sun as we are cold. The manager said "you can move the table anywhere you like or we can move it for you, but don't touch the umbrella." We found a spot near an electrical room door and figured we will set the table there, in the sun, for the 30 minutes we are having breakfast. After all, this is an electrical room door that really doesn't need to be opened/closed regularly. It was the only place that had sun that wasn't blocking the door for the employees or anyone else. As soon as we moved the table there, he came yelling at us again. He then said "please don't move the tables and leave them when they were at". Is he kidding? He just told us we can move the tables. He then said that the electrical room needs to be accessed "regularly" and we will be in the way. He then moved us again but this time he placed our food on a dirty table which wasn't cleaned. When I asked why are you placing our food on a dirty table, he said it's just "temporary" as I move the tables around. So I guess if you put people's food on dirty tables TEMPORARILY, it's ok? We had two different customers walk up to us who witnessed what happened and they both said I should call Culver City (their corporate HQ) and file a complaint. People were shocked at the horrible service. All we wanted is to be in the sun. I guess it was too much to ask for. P.S. I asked the "general manager" four times for his business card and didn't receive it. His response was "I am busy and I will get it for you when I can." After this experience, I am not sure we will be back. It's very unfortunate, as we definitely like the food. But I don't appreciate going to a restaurant with my wife and kids and getting yelled at in front of a bunch of other customers and treated like crap. read more

Here you can order amazing loaves of bread (daily specials shown online, like 'cheese + cracked pepper' or 'oat porridge'!) pizzas, sammies or my favorite; toasts! These toasts are no joke folks. Each one is a meal unto itself! We tried the Avocado Toast, and the Almond Butter Toast (with honey). The former was tasty and simple without too much going on, and the almond butter was a fabulous blend of nutty and sweet! Never had any complains But today i was really disappointed with the croissants I picked up 4 chocolate croissants , Each one was individual packed great! Took them out their bags the looked great nice and flaky until I cut into one, it was undercooked, I took a bite into it and i got a mouthful full of grainy butter... butter That had been melted and then chilled. I took another bite and it was like a heart attack in a croissant! Dont get me wrong i love butter, but this was way too much butter, I called the store I purchased it from and was told they undercook and croissants are made with butter... but surely as a baker myself who occasionally makes croissants at home know this. Came in today to try lodge bread after leaving my friend's smoothie shop in the plaza! He was raving about how good this place is and I had a lot of work to get done, so I figured it would be the perfect spot to grab some quick breakfast, etc. The golden turmeric latte was super good! The initial experience didn't start out the best with multiple situations going on with our order. But the team really did their best to rectify the situation which had me feeling soooooo much better!! I would come back and would recommend!
