    The Matrix
    Donny M.

I've been coming to this sandwich shop (very sporadically) for several years. I never posted a review for Basil's previously because honestly, I didn't like their food that much. I really want to like this place, and keep trying to find something I really like from their menu since it's so close to me. It's in a plaza on Topanga with easy parking. There are an adequate number of tables inside the place, but I've never actually dined in. The place seems clean. Although it's not on my rotation of local sandwich spots, there were a couple of sandwiches on their menu that I found passable. When I get a sandwich close by to my home, I usually end up getting it from other spots that are a bit farther away than Basil's, but are better in my opinion. Today, I thought of giving Basil's another try. I went to their website to figure out what I wanted to order, and was surprised by what seemed like a completely unfamiliar menu. I decided to just go there and order in person instead of over the phone. The menu has also been changed inside the shop since I was last here. Speaking with the people there, I learned that there was an ownership change a couple years ago, and they have now revamped the menu. I decided to go with The Matrix, which is prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomato, avocado, olive oil, balsamic glaze, and pesto sauce. It is available in only one size, and comes with a bag of chips and a can of soda for $17.95 plus tax. My first impression before tasting it was that this sandwich is significantly smaller than all the other sandwiches I've ordered from this shop in the past. Maybe that's why this one comes with the chips and soda. I did not enjoy this sandwich at all. The predominant taste of each bite was the bread, which didn't even seem to be toasted. I could also taste the balsamic glaze and tomato in some of the bites, but couldn't taste the prosciutto at all. I would not recommend The Matrix. While I didn't enjoy my sandwich, the people here were friendly and the service was good. For that reason, I am willing to give this place yet another try in the future to hopefully find a menu item from them that I do like.

Tried the 12" Da Rosa sub at Basil's Deli Cafe and overall it was pretty good. It comes with salami, turkey, pepperoni, pepperoncini, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onion, deli sauce, and Italian dressing. The flavor combination worked really well and the ingredients tasted fresh. Compared to Cricca's Italian Deli, there was less meat, so it didn't feel quite as hearty. My main issue was that the sandwich was pretty dry. I ended up adding mayo and mustard myself to balance it out. I also noticed there wasn't an option to add mayo when ordering, and adding mustard was an extra $1, which felt a little excessive for a condiment. That said, the sandwich still tasted good overall and I'd probably come back to try one of their paninis since those might be a better fit for me.

I ordered the Chicken Pesto Panini and it was one of the most delicious sandwiches I've had in a while. For some reason, they were swamped today so the orders took longer than usual but the Manager was super nice and offered free chips to us for being so patient. Very clean inside and outstanding service! I really loved my sandwich I definitely want to come back! So good!

These sandwiches really hit the spot. Enjoyed a Tuscan Hot Pastrami and a Torino's Special. The pastrami filled with Boar's Head navel pastrami was tender, fatty and bursting with flavors from the deli dressing and chipotle sauce. Torino's Special was also very good although it didn't stand out as much as the Pastrami. We got the 12 inch subs which come with a canned soda. Very reasonably priced sandwich and drink combo. All in it was less than $40. Super friendly owner who went out of his way to make sure we were happy with our experience. Thoughtful service at the counter. Would definitely be back to get some more of that navel pastrami, which is only available at selected delis.

Friendly service. Great sandwiches. If you dine in they offer appetizer and salad for free but I had to take my sandwich to go. I'll stop by here again and dine in next time. Trust!!

Best subs in the valley hands down. 10/10

Ordered through Doordash. I was craving a hot sandwich and I saw this place on the app. Never heard of it before and I've lived in the area for 23 years. Can't believe I've been missing out on some of the most delicious Italian sandwiches ever!! Like how good could a sandwich be? Its just bread, meats, and other things. But the Italian Mostro was fantastic!! So many wonderful flavors in every single bite! And by the way, These are supposed to be 8-inch subs, but they clearly measured 10 inches!! Good job!!

Nothing and I mean nothing beats a really good deli sandwich. And this is it! Up there with the valley contenders Cavaretta's and San Carlo. If you can find your own unique niche, spin, you got it! Granted I ordered a basic deli sandwich because I wasn't feeling adventurous... It still was DELICIOUS! the deli is small and clean. I called in an order and I live about 2.5 miles away. By the time I walked out the door and got there my sandwich was ready. The 12" Torino special. Which also comes with a free soda and bag of chips! A good helping of meat. A good balance of veggies and dressing all in all and around a really good sandwich. I will definitely be back to try the other sandwiches!

Does Basil's Deli and Cafe have the BEST Subs in the San Fernando Valley? I needed some sandwiches to bring for a picnic at the Hollywood Bowl and a beach day with friends. I came across this hidden gem that we've driven by hundreds of times. Family owned and operated in the heart of Chatsworth. It's 100% worth the hype!! Quality premium meats, freshly sliced to order. It's a flavor-packed local gem you can't miss. Handcrafted sub sandwiches from Basil's Deli in Canoga Park with fresh Boar's Head meats. We tried these sub sandwiches: Al Pacino's Favorite - bold and meaty. Turkey, roast beef, ham, salami--stacked like a gangster lineup. Classic Italian - timeless deli perfection. Nothing beats a Classic Italian. Genoa salami, mortadella, prosciutto, hot capicolla--each bite, a hit of pure deli magic. Savory and salty! Torino's Special - full of flavor and extra love. It's layered like a love letter to old-school Italian delis with Mortadella, ham, prosciutto, copicolla and salami. Stacked and loaded!! Tip: when taking on a picnic, ask for any sauces, dressings or pepperoncini on the side so that sandwich does not get soggy. They have these unique Basil Seed drinks. Instead of chia seeds floating in the drinks, they have Basil seeds, which helps to cool the body. Perfect for the summer!! Basil's Deli and Cafe is a definite MUST-TRY, with so many incredible sub sandwich options, we'll be back to explore more from the menu! The customer service is top-notch from Herman, Manuel, Greg and Arthur!!

Great food and excellent service. Tried this place for the first time tonight and my partner and I are already making plans to come back. Every sandwich lover has gotta try this place!

    Mamma Mia! Panini

Hi guys. This is the Mamma Mia! Panini, and it was INCREDIBLE. It comes with Pepper Jack, which I subbed for American cheese. The service was wonderful; the workers took their time to make sure I would love my order. There is a very wholesome atmosphere at this deli.

We've driven by this shopping center hundreds of times, but never noticed the deli sign. Today we were in the mood for a sandwich and decided to try it out. Coming from the East Coast, sandwiches were a staple of my diet, and this sure has that similar vibe. The store was clean. Italian music playing on the radio. Fresh cannolis on the counter. Clean table clothes on the tables. It is definitely a welcoming environment. We decided to dine in. The owner was there and he was very friendly. Offered us a complimentary salad while we waited. Mixed greens with cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. It was great. Sandwich came within a few minutes and boy was it delicious. The bread was soft. Lunchmeat was tasty. All around a great sandwich. Price was decent. Sandwich for 2 was 15 dollars. I couldn't recommend this place enough. If you are in the mood for a great tasting sandwich, definitely check out Basil's!

Well, Well, Well…read more... It appears that my 23&Me ancestry composition has been recently updated and as of today, you are now looking at a 7.1%, Pure, Italian Stallion. Yeah, I too always thought I looked like a young Joe Pesci... Ha! Hey, Fugheddaboudit!!!! Hey, hate me for my ways, but blood is blood and I'm going to run with this Italian thing for as long as I can. And just as my "old Italian Nonna" might have said, had I actually had one... "O mangi la minestra o salti la finestra" But being that I am less than 10% actual Italian blooded, and me not actually having a Nonna who would probably just yell crazy things at me in Italian, I'll just stick to the little Italian that I actually know..... The Food!!!! Yeah give me.... A little meatballs slathered in marinara covered in melted provolone... Or Some thinly sliced prosciutto, mortadella, capicola on some crusty Italian bread... Or even... A square of lasagna with Italian sausage, mozzarella, ricotta, Romano cheese served with a chilled San Pellegrino to wash it all down... And you'd be 100%, not 7.1% correct, that I would enthusiastically rep my Italian heritage and proudly wave the colors of my National flag... The Red, The White & The Bl.... Errr, I mean Green! ;) Yes, I can admittedly get behind Italian food any day of the week and I know my "Nonna" would be proud. Well thankfully, you don't have to go all the way back to the Motherland to visit your Nonna and experience the old world eats of a little place called Italia! Cause Cavaretta's Italian Deli has all your Deli needs and wants covered. Yep, a San Fernando Valley staple since 1959, this spot has been and continues to be the place to grab the Best Italian sandwich (according to the Daily News) this side of the Colosseum (according to me, Lance L.). But the cocoa powder on top of the Tiramisu (aka the cherry on top)... This deli has an Italian Grocery shop with everything you need to make your real or made up Nonna proud back in your kitchen. So, forget about waiting around for your 23&Me results to come back and just get your little pasticcino buns over to Cavaretta's and live like the Italiano's do! Ciao Bella!

They must have recently completed an interior/exterior renovation finally, it's about time! One of the reasons why I was ordering is cause I couldn't stand being inside. My experience yesterday dining-in was a better environment. However, the place was practically empty. I'm pretty sure I know the reason why. It cost me $69 for a half sandwich soup combo, and half a pastrami sandwich with a side of chopped liver, and a hot tea. The tea plate was very thoughtfully appointed: hot water container, cup, honey, lemon, and a good quality teabag, served on a stone plate. My half pastrami sandwich was quite divine, the Ryebread was very fresh, but there was a little bit too much fat on the pastrami. The coleslaw was a little bit on the older side. And the chopped liver matched the expression on the waitresses face, it also was served without any bagel chips, crackers, or rye bread, nor was I asked if I wanted any of those items as typically you spread chopped liver on something! Their napkins are literally like using rough bad paper towels. I believe their utensils are oversized. My guest was extremely doted on, the waitress said that she was making it a half sandwich and soup combo, but I don't think that's what I was charged. How can two half pastrami sandwiches, a bowl of lentil soup, and a small scoop of chopped liver with a cup of tea come to $69??? My experience coming here in all my years is that the place was extremely packed- any time I came. Even my next-door neighbor who lived on the block for over 50 years would come here weekly. They used to have almost the best matzoh ball soup on the planet, not so much anymore they've changed the formula. The matzoh balls used to have flavor and be soft. I make a mean matzoh ball soup, and when I'm not feeling well, I used to buy it from here to nurse me back-to-health- Nature's remedy. But not so much anymore. their chicken soup had become the price of liquid gold. The UGLY: this is an older Edited Review unposted from 4 yrs ago: This review is specifically for the so-called manager that refused service to me (who knows maybe he's not there anymore?) this morning after I had already paid for the order. When I told him I would be leaving a bad review he said he would be removing it!! I've been a Customer at this restaurant for over (28 years). I placed an order through the UberEAT app to be picked up at the store for my lunch today. Despite having a receipt that the items were paid for there was no order for me to pick up at the restaurant. When I asked to place another order as I was running late for work, I needed my lunch, the manager was going to charge me more money than I had paid on the app!!! And then finally told me that he's not placing the order for me that I can do it through the app!! He also refused to give me his name. Hopefully that person doesn't work there anymore. If so, buyer beware, stick to ordering directly with the restaurant to save yourself a nightmare!!!! this guy, if he's still there, sent a 32 year old customer away from the store without any lunch and made her late for work!!!!!!!!

If you in the area or looking for a high quality sandwich you have to check this place out - you will not be disappointed. I'll be back For Sure

Ok. I've seen this place online and thought to myself "if I'm ever in Woodland Hills, I'm going…read morehere". Well.....today was the day. It's a small Italian deli that hits the way you want it to. To the right as soon as you walk in, there's seats and a table where you can wait for your to go order or to eat there. The entire shop was clean, neat and orderly. It's sensory overload walking in. There's a lot going on. The menu is massive. I knew what I wanted after doing some homework before arriving so I was ready. The lady that took my order couldn't have been more of a pleasure to deal with. I placed my order, paid, tipped and sat down. A few minutes later, I had what is probably the best sandwich I've had this year. I should have sat in the parking lot and enjoyed it but I wanted the elbow room because I knew this was a monster. After I got home and unwrapped this behemoth, I instantly knew it was worth the drive. The Dillinger (which is what I ordered) has Pastrami, Meatballs, Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Mozz Cheese, Garlic Butter and Marinara Sauce. If there's a better (big back) sandwich, I'll wait for your reply. This was soooooo gooood. In every bite you could taste each ingredient separately and it was an explosion of flavors. I ordered a small cup of their marinara sauce to dip/drizzle on each bite.....couldn't have been a better decision. Worth it. The 3 ladies that were working the front counter (around noon on 4/23) were the best. Just an all around great experience and fantastic food. I'll be back soon FOR SURE!!!!

It would be difficult to come here and not find something for even the pickiest of eaters. You want something sweet, savory, comforting, light, rich, filling, whatever, you'll find it on the menu. The service can be hit and miss; sometimes it's great, sometimes it's lackluster. But overall the bright clean atmosphere and great food make up for where it's lacking. My husbands favorite is the ridiculously huge pot pie, matzo ball soup (he craves this when he's sick), or the Rueben and mine is the hot turkey plate (basically a thanksgiving plate) or the turkey Rueben. I've been to several deli's and this is the only one I've ever been able to find a turkey version. Parking can be a pain. There's a lot but they share with a lot of other businesses and if you're there on a weekend, be prepared to wait a while or try the street.

Normally I love this place, mostly for the prices and the quiet patio for my dog. Today was such a…read morefrustrating experience. I walked in around 8:50 am without dogs to let the front know I'd be sitting outside with dogs but needed the restroom first. When I came out, I retrieved dogs from my car and sat on the patio. I waited 20 minutes and no one showed up. Eventually, I got up and went to the front with the dogs, bringing them into the restaurant, which I wanted to avoid so that I could tell someone again that I was on the patio with dogs. I ordered my food and it arrived with no fork, so I ate with my hands as my server didn't come by again. When I was finally noticed upon finishing my meal, I was handed a paper bill and without giving a moment for me to say I would be paying using my phone, the server turned and walked away. She was about halfway down the patio when she said "I'll come back for it." Not sure what has happened to the service here over the years, but it's becoming less and less worth the price. What used to be a very quick meal and efficient service has now turned into over an hour and I still haven't paid. Plus, I have sticky hands from eating French toast with my fingers.
