Transfer to the E or F train, go the entire length of the Q46 bus, walk a mile in the cold, then see the Bruce movie in a theater in a basement of an apartment complex. It's the day after Thanksgiving, but we have to leave soon since it's only playing at 5. Sounds simple, right? The North Shore Towers Cinema is so obscure that I never went there during my Queens years. But that the glorious era of the Utopia and Bayside theaters before AMC destroyed the locals, prior to suffering its own injuries in streaming times. (No I didn't consume chocolate egg creams on Ave. U and never saw the Brooklyn Dodgers but I do miss the old bagel place on Union Tpke.) I did check the theater out once to see Richard Gere's Time Out Of Mind. The frequent chatter was above Times Square levels. Yeah, I could have asked for a refund but I was here because it wasn't playing anywhere else. This time, the noise wasn't non-zero but it was far better than before. And after a hallway here and an elevator there, you may be surprised by this giant single-screen theater. Important for a movie about Springsteen, there was very good sound quality too, (minor spoiler ahead) helping to delineate the difference between an amateurish home recording and a rousing rehearsal of Born in the USA. The staff was friendly. Full disclosure/geography note: I am a public-transit advocate but it was a bit more convenient on a winter day to take Lyft from Little Neck. Express buses run to North Shore Towers but that only helps from Midtown. I have no insight about the on-site restaurants. There's nothing else in the immediate vicinity but if you're up for 29-minute walks or Lyft there are good options on Union Tpke., Northern Blvd. and Hillside Ave.

I've been here quite a few times & although I enjoy the movie experience, there's usually something that I notice that needs to be tweaked. I definitely think management needs to do better with the lobby area cleanliness. This particular day on a beautiful weekend, there was popcorn all around the lobby area floor & something must've spilled because by the napkins & straws was a puddle of water. I'm not sure when the drop happened, but I noticed there was not a "wet floor" sign at least for 10 mins while I was waiting for my snacks. There's a lot of kids who come here & especially when there's a child movie out (like right now) & not even having the sign up for a minute is problematic. Both ICE machines (the slushy drink not actual ice) were out too, which was very disappointing. I don't know when it happened, but if I was the manager of the location I would've sought getting it fixed asap before the busy weekend. It also wouldn't hurt to occasionally check the chairs because sometimes the recliner doesn't work. It didn't work the last time I was here & this time it was a force to actually recline. It was moving very slow. It's probably about to not work at all. If the cleanliness of the whole theater (including the bathroom) were to be better presented & monitored as well as the seats checked regularly that they recline, this theater has potential.

I signed up right away to the drive-in site for future events notification. We are familiar in the area so getting to the drive-in is not a hassle at all. There are friendly staff members who guided the movie goers for effective parking and pleasurable viewing. The movie theater location is in the New York Hall of Science parking lot and the screen is fronting a good view of Terrace on the Park. The adaptable comfort zone is clean, convenient and follows Covid protocol. Luckily, we received a complimentary snack box courtesy of Apple TV+. The film is a free event too. Let's support the cause of this drive -in theater. It gives pleasure two ways.

I can't believe we get to do this for free. It's been such a long time since we've all been in a…read moremovie theater, and even longer since we've been in a drive in since we've never been to one. LOL. To have one right in our borough, in our very crowded city, is such a treat. And it was all free. The second time we went we even got free treats left on our windshield. The staff was amazing. They led us through the maze of metal barricades and cones to the viewing area, made sure we were parked appropriately on the lawn, good enough to view the screen perfectly straight on, and helped us to turn all of our lights off. When we weren't able to tune them all off while still listening to the movie audio on our radio, they came around and lent us a portable radio. That way we could turn the car completely off and listen to the movie audio from their borrowed radio. There was also a food stand, but we had dinner beforehand and brought our own snacks, so we didn't order from them. All in all, a pretty awesome experience for the whole family. Thanks to all the staff and organizations that made it possible!
