I've loved living here. My partner and I looked at most of the buildings in Kendall. We looked at the waterfront, the Avalon, twenty20, Vivo, and several others. Ultimately our high ceilings and natural light sealed the deal. After moving in, the leasing office has treated us like family. When we need packages sent off but don't feel comfortable leaving them outside of the package room, they're there to help. When we have questions about our lease, we just walk into their office. Last week, I swung by to talk to Tim and Svetlana about options for renewing or lease. They both sat down with me for twenty minutes to discuss our options. This apartment complex is so low grade. It's the worst place I've ever lived. My toilet isn't even securely grounded. The appliances are the cheapest pieces of crap. I'm now dealing with them ripping the walls apart in my bedroom to fix a leak with my air conditioner. I called the staff and they aren't offering me any compensation for the dry wall dust and mess that these guys are creating. I cannot tell you how much I hate this place. Avoid it at all costs. Spend more money to be in an apartment where people actually care about the state of your living arrangements. I hate living here! I cannot wait for my lease to be over and move out of this shit hole! read more

We wish we found this apartment as soon as we moved to Cambridge. Walking in our apartment makes me feel like I can breathe. The windows, along with sky-high ceilings are an excellent reason to want to live here, but add on the proximity to the T and some close, amazing restaurants as a bonus!! Still, the number one reason to live here is the incredible staff - across the board. Every single person who works here does absolutely everything they can to make sure the residents are well and happy. With Tim, Kelly, Amber, Rich and Gio running this place, I guarantee everyone is in good hands. We wish we could buy our apartment!! read more

There's a big health risk to living here. This is a former industrial site with plenty of toxic, chemical waste in the ground. When the builders converted it to residential, they put a concrete slab over it. However, toxic gas still vents out. This wasn't considered a problem for years, but Massachusetts recently upgraded its guidelines for this chemical due to new research showing how harmful it is at current levels. Since then, the management has (very reluctantly) been treating the issue with monthly testing and indoor air purification units (whose electricity you have to pay for, about $100 a month). The results of the tests vary from month to month, but of course the gas has to go somewhere--and if it's being vented out of someone else's apartment, it may be vented into yours. The affected units are primarily those on the ground floor. I apologize that I've forgotten the exact chemical, but I remember that it was especially dangerous to children and women of childbearing age (not just pregnant women). These are beautiful units, but that industrial look comes with a cost, and you won't find any pity from the management--after all, they don't live there. read more

Overall an awesome place to live - responsive and friendly service, convenient location, solid structure makes for quiet environment, and high ceilings provide a spacious feeling. After a year of living here, I'm glad I chose The Lofts at Kendall Sq over traditional modern high rise apartments which tend to be smaller with low ceilings. The leasing office staff were consistently friendly and helpful, even in the middle of the night, even on weekends, even when they were about to lock the door to the office and head home. The community spaces are kept clean and organized. The gym is substantially better than most residential gyms. The location is great - not too noisy and close to restaurants, bars, public transit, parks, the river, and more. Wasn't hard to run into other young professionals and families and make friends. I moved here 3 months ago from another Equity Residential Building. I was really excited about the large space high ceilings and exposed columns. That excitement did not last long. We saw a mouse in our apartment after a couple of weeks moving here. I called the maintanace and they sent a pest control person three days later. He went straight to kitchen and sealed the holes in the wall and the cabinet under the sink with a steel wool. About 13 days later we saw another one. I called the maintanace again and emailed the management. They sent another pest control person 8 days after. He came in, checked under the sink and left. Meanwhile I saw two mice in one evening. Two weeks ago we found a dead mouse (See the picture. I hope it was a mouse and not a rat!!) on a glue trap on the bedroom floor. I am allergic to mice (developed when I was working in a research lab) and one month after moving here I had a terrible pruritic rash all over my body and had to use high dose immunosuppressants for three weeks in the middle of a pandemic. I told them about my allergies and sent them pictures of my arms so they would take it seriously but to this date they have done nothing to seal all the holes and treat the unit to make sure there are no more rodents. I lived in three continents, 4 countries, and 7 years in Boston area but have never seen a mouse in my home. These mice did not move here with me. There is no reason to attract mice to my apartment. This building has a recurring rodent problem and the management won't say it straight but will tell you that they call pest control when someone complains. I don't believe they either informed other tenants for precautions or took any action to remedy the problem. EQR is a 20B worth company but won't spend a tiny fraction of it to rodent-proof their properties. They don't care about the health of the tenants. There are codes/rules for landlords to ensure the health and safety of the tenants in their properties but EQR is clearly violating them. They have treated this as if i was complaining about a fly in my apartment. I finally decided to call in a reliable pest control company to inspect and treat my apartment before I move out of here so we don't carry any mice or remains with us but they require a written permission from landlord. I asked the office 4 times and I still don't have that document. Finally today he emailed me that they could come in and i could use his email as a permission. So they rented me a rodent infested apartment, they didn't treat the problem knowing about my health condition and apparently I am not allowed to find a solution myself. Also EQR has a clever set up, if you can't solve a problem with management and need to discuss with someone higher there is no way you can reach anyone. Their contact info is hidden. I called the resident relations and left two messages last one being extremely upset and still no one called me or emailed me. I asked multiple times for a contact info at the corporate office, finally today the regional manager was cc'd in the email response. I asked multiple times about the extent of the problem in the building but always wishy washy or no answer. Despite knowing my health concerns. I haven't slept properly in the last almost two months haven't used my living room (saw one running under the couch) haven't cooked in my kitchen. I have to spray the floors and all the surfaces and anything i I have to take out from lower cabinets (holes holes holes and gaps for mice to wonder around) with chlorox every day. I had to wash all my clothes in the closets and sealed them in white trash bags so i can track if they were breached. I have to sterilize my shoes before I put them on. And I am dealing with all of this while trying to keep up with hard deadlines for work. What a life!! I always wanted to live in an apartment like this!! Oh to be fair, they did apologize every time I reported rodent sighting and told me they were really really sorry that that was happening to me. Also offered to dispose of the dead mice if I caught one!! So nice right? Maybe I am being really ungrateful here!! So do I recommend this place? Absolutely not unless you are ok with living with rodents. In general EQR doesn't give a rat's ass about tenants' health if it's gonna cost them money. They just cover things up. You wouldn't even know what you were exposed to. Also your rent will go up by hundreds of dollars when lease renewal time comes. If you can't afford it you will have to move. In general, it's a good place to live if you don't need to have any interaction with the leasing office. However... The apartment exceeded the standard of a type of air pollutant this spring. It was not surprising since the building was transformed from a factory. According to the leasing office, this was because the State changed the standard and it's "not their problem". The issue itself was understandable but the leasing office took very slow action. They put a small air purifier in the living room after a few weeks of identifying the issue and left it there unattended for a few more months. (Our apartment was 1,000 sf and we spent more time in bedrooms.) When I tried to talk about compensation, the community manager, Tim, was very irresponsible. And we were not compensated at all in the end - not even for the electricity bill for the air purifier. During our move-out, we chose the easy-move mode, which was supposed to cost $200. We were told that some other fees might also appear on the final bill. From the way the leasing office told us, we expected the total fee to be a little more than 200, since we were quite careful when living there and didn't make any holes in the wall or break any appliance. However, we ended up paying more than $500. What made us the most angry was that the community manager, again, was very impatient and arrogant during the whole process. There were too many details which would take pages. What I want to warn you is that this person cares only about how to avoid his responsibilities, at least based on my own experience. Attitude is subtle, but still discernible. I think it's fine you want to live in this place based on other considerations. But my recommendation is to avoid any contact with the community manager. Talk with other in the office if you want to have a good mood. read more

The lofts are new and beautiful. The building has a rooftop, a basement full of different amenities. Ping pong table, a gym, yoga studio, a pet cleaner. and a place to have meetings. I like the fact it's a smaller building unlike other properties I've visited in alewife. Tim and Michael are really great come off super friendly and make the place seem more like a home. I haven't lived here but I will say -- its a bait and switch game. My pricepoint was at the low end and I really would've appreciated it if the leasing agent just told me straight up I wouldn't get ANYTHING LIKE the pics on the website. AND, I would've appreciated if I was explicitly told beforehand that the actual apt I wanted to see was available for viewing. Also, I drove by during the day and night..... uh, sketch? Next to smoke stacks? Really? Maybe living there is an awesome thing if you have $4000 to spend. But in terms of value, I ran the numbers, not so much. read more

Love this place. Gorgeous lofts, tons of amenities, and it's only a few blocks from my workplace. Yeah, it's expensive and we're currently paying a little more than we'd planned to, but it's priced similarly to other apartment complexes in the area, even though it's the nicest of the options, and the ceilings are so high that we're considering building a split level area (you can make any modifications that are easily reversible upon move-out). Although our apartment is nicer than what we'd planned to get, it's well *worth* what we're paying. Not sure if this is on the site, but the farther off cycle you move in (far from August), the cheaper it is. So perhaps we got an unusually good deal... To address Liz M.'s review: I'm not sure if this feature was available when her review was posted, but you can check price and move-in date for all available apartments online. When we visited, the leasing agent who worked with us, Nate, was extremely informative and helpful about suggesting available apartments to fit our requirements (walk in closet and space for a recording booth and studio). He ended up finding us one we hadn't considered which had the perfect layout for us. They handle issues really quickly here. We found a few crooked doors on move-in, and emailed management. A technician came in, removed the doors, took them to the in-house shop, sanded and painted them, and rehung them. Less than six hours after sending the email, everything was perfectly fixed. Other amenities: indoor fitness center (I hardly have the motivation to go outside for groceries in the winter, let alone exercise), laundry, bike rooms, storage units and indoor parking available for a fee, mail and package handling. You may not *need* all these nice things, but if you're a busy professional and don't have to make too many sacrifices to afford the rent, the convenience of the amenities adds up. It's a relief to know that our apartment is as safe as it could be, and that if the heating or an appliance breaks in the middle of winter, I won't have to wait months for the landlord to fix it. p.s. If you visit, try to check out a top floor apartment. The wall-to-wall windows are amazing, and there's even a ledge wide enough for sitting. read more

I lived here when it was called Worthington Place from early 2001 to 2003. Obviously under different management than it now has (which was excellent FWIW). Originally the biotech company I worked for, Millennium, put me up here for 3 months free while I looked around Boston for a place to live. But I liked this place so much, I decided to stay here! This is an amazing building with some stunning apartments. We had one of the 2 bedrooms at the base of the hidden garden patio on the first floor. High ceilings, and huge industrial windows looking out on the long garden, which was particularly beautiful at Christmas time with all the lights. Very quiet, despite being able to see the busy street at the far end of the garden. Probably most people walking by on Binney St do not realize there is a nice garden hidden inside the U-shaped building. No washer/dryer in the unit, but that was about the only undesirable feature (but easy access to a large laundry on the second floor IIRC). Parking was OK, either outside or inside, but a little tight, and I did have my convertible's roof damaged while parking outside (so I moved inside). Although this area has improved since then. The current management I gather is Avalon, and I subsequently lived at another of their properties, Avalon Bear Hill in Waltham (townhouses in a beautiful park). They are very good managers, perhaps the best I've ever had, so I have no complaints. I'm going to assume they do an equally good job at the Lofts. Not cheap, but if you can afford it you will be very happy with the building and the fantastic location a few minutes walk from all the great One Kendall Square restaurants and art cinema, and Kendall Square T stop on the Red Line. Also only 15 minutes walk to Central Square too. read more

The ones we saw were very lacking on closet space though. We met with Nate Lopez when looking at these places and he was really pleasant and accommodating. read more

I lived at lovely Archstone for two years, when it was called Worthington Apartments. The apartments were awesome - 14 foot ceilings, huge windows, lots of space. The in-building laundry was also nice. The trash rooms, however, were horrible - always packed with trash, not cleaned often, and constantly sprayed with a weird noxious agent that would give you a headache if you were in there for more than 5 minutes dropping off your junk. The real issue was the management/ownership of the building. Before I left, they tried to hoodwink me and my roommate into a $500 a month rent increase, which was completely outrageous. Given the neighborhood (remote, not close to anything cool, boring, industrial), these apartments shouldn't be going for as much as they were ($2400ish for a two bed/two bath). It seemed like they conned recent transplants and MIT students into taking the apartments when one could find cheaper/better digs elsewhere, like Central Square. Also, it seemed at the time I left that the management sanctioned brokers putting up Craigslist ads saying the rent was much cheaper than it really is so that they could hook you into looking at the place. The old bait and switch isn't very cool. All in all, think carefully before you take an apartment here and make sure you look around for better deals. read more

Love this building. Common areas are kept very clean, the gym has two Peloton bikes and an assortment of fabulous equipment. Our apartment is very comfortable, modern and energy efficient. Most important, is the responsiveness and professionalism of the staff. Makayla in particular, is super responsive, follows up with any inquiries quickly and is a pleasure to deal with. The maintenance staff is also outstanding - responsive and efficient. It's a nice place to live - convenient to a couple of good restaurants (walking distance). I've lived at Archstone Kendall for about a year, and if you are interested in living here I would recommend doing A LOT of research about the unit you're moving into. The building is a renovated factory, and the unit I live in retained the original beam-work and flooring. This is architecturally interesting, but means there is _no_ sound protection from the apartments above me. I can hear every step that they take. I'm grateful that no one lives below me (I'm over the parking garage) because I would hate to think that I am as annoying to someone as the people up there are to me. The building staff are very responsive, but ultimately ineffectual. Archstone offers a 30-day move-in satisfaction guarantee, but when I complained within that time the staff's response was to say, "the previous tenant never complained about noise" and to offer to move me into an inferior (but equally priced) unit. Yes, the staff is very helpful when you're looking and signing the lease for an apartment here (duh). Yes, everyone gets a move-in basket and inspection, but your satisfaction with the apartment will be based on more than than the days leading up to move-in. Everything else seems to fall into the "nice, but" category. The fitness room is nice, but doesn't replace a full gym for fitness enthusiasts. The laundry unit is nice, but the price per load is higher here than the cost of taking my laundry to be washed and folded by someone else. I could go on, but suffice it to say that given how much you will pay for a unit here, you should take your time and be picky, especially since there is a luxury apartment building right down the street, and another one going up right across from that. read more

We had a terrible experience with the renewal process after we lived in lofts at Kendall square for a year, and it seems very clear that the renewal team is tricking us to rip us off. Before the 60 day notice, the renewal team (Alaina) gives us a price which is already very high, but acceptable, so we are asking if there's room to bring it down lower. Alana was saying she will work on it and ask us to work with the management team to first remove the vacant tenant on our lease. So we went back to the management team, who took so long to remove the vacate tenant, and did not call/email/in any form contact us that they already remove the tenant. The leasing team, on the other hand, although they can see when the tenant is removed, never followed back up with us either, just to let us wait till the 60 day notice timeframe is over, and suddenly told us a even higher price than what they claim "will work on" before, after we call them back in ourselves. At this point we have no choice but to sign the new extraordinary high lease because the 60 day vacate time has passed, and it's just so frustrating to us that we need to call back and forth with the renewal and management team (two different teams, hmmm) ourselves so many time to get an answer / move the process forward, and eventually be ripped off by the two teams because we trusted that they will work on the renewal offer so we did not submit the 60 vacant notice. It is totally the management and renewal team's fault to not inform us whether they have done what they should do (e.g. remove the vacant tenant, generate the renewal lease first). What they did is just sit there and wait until the price is high! read more

I really enjoy living at the Lofts - the spaces are really nice, and the facilities are fantastic!

The whole team at Kendall Square Lofts are great to deal with. Like any new construction there have been a few teething problems but these have been resolved quickly. Andrew who helps with service requests has also been super helpful - even helping to hang some pictures when we needed an extra pair of hands. We have rented from Avalon and another rental places and the customer service here is above and beyond in a positive way than what I have experienced elsewhere. Thank you! read more

I lived here for 7 years. Aside from the location and the ceilings, here are some of the downsides that you won't hear as much about: * Indoor parking is available, but the only remaining spots if you are a new resident will be in front of pillars making it hard to back out. We tried this for a month and changed to outdoor parking as a result. * The outdoor parking is extremely tight. If you are not obese then, only the driver will be able to squeeze in, then will have to pull out the car for other passengers to get in. It was not always like this, but ever since the parking lot was moved to the new parking lot on other side of 3rd street, the spots were increased in number, and the space per spot was reduced to maximize revenues. The most painful part is when there is a blizzard, it is near impossible to access the driver side door. At times, I have shoveled my way to the roof of the car then shoveled down. Note: The management has replied saying they are accommodating to large vehicles, but the fact is that even our standard mid size sedan was extremely cramped. * We had quite a few mice, because of nearby development and demolitions of older buildings in Kendall square. The management is very profit driven and does not care about the residents. A few examples of this (aside from the outdoor parking squeeze) * Rents go up every year by several hundred dollars. Over the course of my stay, I was paying about $2400 per month, and I left when they were asking about $3300 per month. * The management attempting to increase my parking rate mid-lease. After I pushed back saying that the lease is binding and they cannot change rates mid-lease, they backed off. Be prepared for other sneaky attempts like this. * The demographics of the residents are young working professionals. As a result you will likely face some neighbor issues with regards to sound from time to time (including a party when cops had to break it up), and a pot smoking neighbor who's fumes would enter my apartment through the shared bathroom ventilation. The management did not care about this, and refused to evict the neighbor over the course of a year (because they would lose a tenant). read more

I love my house ! With ample of sunlight and space and not much noise considering the amount of construction that is happening in Kendall Square , its definitely value for money. I especially like the dedication the team puts in to give the best living experience to all its residents. They recently refurbished the laundry room and upgraded the gym as well as upgraded the barbecue grills in the courtyard (2 of them). Also its just 3 blocks from Kendall T and you can walk to river if you want to. The team also organizes socials and mixers for residents to meet occasionally. I can't say enough good things about living at the Lofts at Kendall Square. First, the move-in process was seamless. After having looked at over a dozen other apartments, we settled on the Lofts and were finished with the entire touring/application/lease process within a couple hours. All of your apartment documents are in an online portal and you can pay your rent through there as well, which I found very convenient. Tim, the building manager, is awesome and extremely responsive as is the maintenance team. We seldom needed maintenance, but the response times are incredibly fast. Each time our issue was addressed the day of, often within a couple hours of submitting the request. We had a problem with our A/C unit and a new unit was installed with an hour of my service request. I was amazed! Requests can also be made through the online portal, so it's a very seamless process. The building is kid-friendly, dog-friendly and relatively quiet. We heard our neighbors on occasion, but nowhere near like we have when living in newer-construction apartments. All the residents we encountered were very friendly and there's a playgroup for younger kids, which was nice to meet other new parents in the area. The apartments are larger than what you will find at other communities and the high ceilings and big windows that make them feel even bigger. There are no washer/dryers in the units, which is a downside, but the common laundry room accepts credit cards for payment and we never ran into an issue with snagging 2-3 washers at a time. Parking and storage are available for additional fees. We rarely ended up using our car as you can walk to pretty much anything you would need (grocery, multiple playgrounds, Cambridgeside Mall, Kendall station and tons of restaurants). Finally, the move out process was seamless. You have the option of paying a small fee ($100) for the cleaning to be taken care of for you, which we did. It was well worth it. The building is currently being managed by Equity Residential and they're constantly making improvements to the building and gardens. I think some of the other reviewers lived on the premises when it was being managed by different companies. If you're considering living in Kendall, it's definitely worth checking out. read more

A lot of the reviews on other sites (and yelp) about bad management come from the old management company (when it was called Worthington Place). When Archstone took over, the resulting changes were dramatic. I can't judge a place based on if things go wrong or not - bad things happen everywhere. The thing to judge on is how the landlord responds. Every issue, large or small, is handled properly, quickly and competently. The management from the office and up the chain at Archstone has been nothing but top notch. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because of the location - you really have to be aware of which side of the complex you are on - the Binney St. side can be loud. The only other downside is that there is a shared laundry facility which is very very far away from some of the apartments in the building. The unique architecture and huugggge apartments make this place a great deal. You should check it out! (and call the office directly - you don't need a broker to get anything special here!) read more

Lofts at Kendall Square, where have you been all my life? My wife and I were in town from LA searching for apartments, and came across Lofts after a very hectic day. Apartment hunting in Boston can feel overwhelming at times. The minute we stepped into Lofts, however, something felt different. We were greeted by John, who helped us as walk-in customers. He found several apartments that fit all of our needs, and made us feel very comfortable. He took the time to show us the apartments and walk us through the leasing process. He is an all-around awesome leasing agent! The Lofts are beautifully renovated, inviting of furry friends, and in a great location. Our only wish was that they had in-unit laundry, which we will gladly give up for the right place. The laundry facilities seem 21st century, though, sending out emails and text messages when your laundry is finished. Overall, a great fit for us. We left Lofts and decided to place a deposit on one of the apartments. The online application process is very simple, however, I managed to mess up our application by adding myself twice as a co-applicant (oops!) John and Timothy to the rescue! Both of them spent a lot of time and effort on the phone with us, fixing my mistake and walking us through the (very easy) process. We already feel at home, and are looking forward to moving in soon. I lived here for a year in 2014-15, my first place in the US. Fantastically light and airy apartments with high ceilings and big windows. Worth looking at a few, as they vary in design, to find one that suits. Good amenities with gym, laundry and office hour concierge service. Close to Cambridgeside Mall, Third and Kendall Square restaurants, cinema and T. The staff are fantastic - really helpful and friendly. Rental process and maintenance issues were dealt with promptly and efficiently. Keep up the great work Tim and team ! I will really miss living here. read more

I lived there for two years (2008-2010) and the management is great. Tthey always fixed things immediately, and they still call me when when I have packages that are delivered there, even though I moved out a while ago. I guess the older reviews are from the time when it wasn't owned by Archstone. It's a real loft in the sense that the building used to be a factory. The ceilings are super-high. Some people may not like the fact that the building is huge, but it was great for us and our kids in the winter. Taking the walk to the mailbox was a fun activity for our four-year-old. There are a mix of folks in the building, including a few families, students, and lots of professionals sharing apartments. The prices are quite steep, but I guess that's what you pay in the neighborhood. read more

Do not live here. We sincerely regretted our decision every day as residents. This is 90% due to the antagonistic, reactive and completely useless management. Any minor and polite request instantly becomes a battle where you're made to feel like you're a teenager in trouble rather than a tenant and client paying $3400 -4000 per month for their product. Sure the apartments seem flashy and huge but they're furnished with the cheapest most flimsy finishes. They lied about paying for electrical /AC upon move in. You will pay upwards of $150-200 extra per month in winter with Eversource. The walls are paper thin. The garbage room is rarely cleaned out and makes you want to vomit every time you take out the trash. The building recently underwent what I can only assume were expensive renovations designed by someone on crack.
