The fact that Lofty can't offer a mug "after 3 pm", for a coffee that costs $7 with tip -- even though a mug is asked for by customers -- is just LAZY and EXTORTIVE. The employees say to me one day "we don't serve coffee in mugs after 3 pm" -- a FULL HOUR BEFORE THE BUSINESS CLOSES AT 4 pm BTW -- so I choose to get there early the next day, I order by 3, I ask "for here", and I still don't get my $7 coffee in a mug. Another flimsy paper cup. More waste. And not what I bought. It's a random and absurd new "policy" -- no mugs after 3 pm -- when you consider the excessive cost of the coffee. Why can't customers, paying this much, get what they ask for? Why is the customer ignored, despite ordering by 3 pm, as THE COMPANY requests? Why is this even "policy"? Why do humans keep paying this kind of money for a "luxury coffee" (when it's not luxury at all because I'm having to type this as I drink $7 coffee out of paper cup while sitting IN the establishment rather than doing some much needed reading and relaxing), paying this kind of money for a company's-interest-in-mind kind of service? I don't like extremely sugary drinks so i typically order half flavor if I want something flavored. This time I ordered a caramel latte with half the sauce/syrup. It came out tasting like caramel milk. This is the second time this has happened to me at this location. Last time I went back and paid for additional shots to be added cause it was disgusting. Their espresso much be really weak but I forgot about the first instance and was quickly reminded when I saw the milk colored drinks being placed on the counter. Immediately regretted my decision. Honestly can't imagine what the regular latte tastes like with full flavor. but $7 for a cup of flavored milk... no thanks. They do have good croissants though. I'll give them an extra star for that. *I will note as I was watching them make the coffees it almost looked like they put in too much milk into the pitchers to mix with the espresso and then poured out whatever didn't fit into the cup with ice. I needed a slight get away and some alone time so I decided to head to downtown San Diego. I had this place bookmarked so decided I'd make this my morning stop for breakfast and coffee. They serve some good dishes for breakfast and I had the poached eggs and toast. I also wanted protein so ordered the chicken sausage and also a side of arugula. Good to have greens with breakfast. The dining area is mostly patio and I sat at a counter overlooking the sidewalk to be able to people watch as I enjoyed my breakfast and coffee. When I saw that Lofty only had a 4 star average review, I was shocked. Simply put, the quality of their coffee is as good as it gets. They roast their own beans in their sophisticated roasting facility in Encinitas. They also make their own almond milk that is the best you'll find anywhere that is a perfect texture for foam. They used to make the best coconut milk I have ever had, but I guess they stopped due to low demand. I do see that most of the lower reviews are about the cost of the food. I agree that coffee house food and drinks are a lot more expensive than I would like them to be, but that's the case with every coffee house downtown or anywhere else these days. Ain't no one got time for two hour waits when I could be spending my Sunday afternoon at home enjoying my food coma. So we walked by Lofty coffee and got something quick instead. We got two milk tea drinks - the London Fog and the Imperial Jasmine. I liked the London Fog a bit more, it had more bite but still very fragrant for my taste. The ham and cheese with arugla croissant was fine but I don't think it was necessary to toast the croissant to make the sandwich. Croissants are already have some structure and when I bit into it's toasted form it felt like buttered shrapnel was flying through my sinuses afterwards. I proceeded to enjoy the flavor of the sandwich but was much more careful of taking more delicate bites after the initial one. Not my favorite chai, the spices were a little to heavy with not enough sweetness to balance it. I've been here a few times, but it's not the best coffee I've had. They've really revamped their look since their original location in Encinitas and I am loving it. It looks so clean and modern, it's perfect to grab a coffee or tea and sit and relax for a second. They have a lovely covered outdoor patio too with lots of seating. However, with people constantly flowing in and out, the tables don't seem to get cleaned off much but that's probably due to a short staff.
