My wife and I are visitors from Philadelphia to the Lohse Family YMCA in Tucson, AZ. We exercise at the Y at home and our experience at this Y was nothing less than good. The staff is courteous and helpful. The Lohse Family Y is clean. People are respectful for the most part cleaning off the machines after they use them. Go into a locker room. There you will find the details of cleanliness. Clean as a whistle. No debris or anything laying around. Bathroom was spotless. Huge selection of exercise equipment. A whole room dedicated to free weights. Swimming pool which we did not use. Pay to park on street or in the next door City of Tucson Parking Garage. Get this $15 per month. Not downtown Philly for $40 and up. If you should wish to continue bettering your health through exercise here in Tucson, this a good place to go. Thank you Belina for running an efficient YMCA. Overall a great place for kids to stay active and stay off the streets. They do shut down access to the basketball court for kids under 18 for an 'adult' reserved game on certain days. Seems antithetic to the Young Men's Christian Association mission, but I think that is tied to a particular manager and their 'friends'. read more

Love this location of the YMCA for their friendly staff and constantly improving interior. They are under construction at the moment but most of the amenities are open except the pool for now. Very modern and sleek updates and Belina is a delight and always handles issues proficiently and professionally, you are in great hands. It has everything you need from cardio equipment to free weights and a variety of classes to choose from like Zumba to Spin. The only downsides some people may find are the parking situations (either a meter or the parking garage) and the hours are 5:30am-8:00pm Mon-Fri, 8:00am-12:00pm on Sat, and Closed on Sundays. If that's an issue there's all the other YMCA's in Tucson you could check out while this one is closed! read more

I have been going to the Lhose YMCA since it opened in the 90's. The jacuzzi, steam room and sauna are long gone. The swimming pool hours were drastically reduced without notice to members at the start of the new year. The only afternoon hours are now from 5:00 to 7:00 PM only on Monday and Wednesday. Morning hours end at 11:00 AM. As a result of the reduced hours the pool is overcrowded during the hours it is open. For most of the 30 plus years I have been going there the pool was open all day Monday through Friday. The facility has been remodeled recently, however that means little if the amenity I would like to use is closed. read more

There is a trainer that walks around the gym and gives unsolicited advice. It's quite annoying. It feels like no matter what you have to say, he has to put you down and tell you that you are wrong. He has also made assumptions about my goals. Like, I'll be on the treadmill and he assumes I'm trying to burn off fat. I never once said I was and it felt very discriminatory. I think his name is Al. I try to avoid him at all costs, but he always seems to find his way. Otherwise, the gym is fine. I just really hate interacting with him. read more

I go to the Lohse YMCA for Gentle Yoga on Tuesdays 1145 - 1245. A homeless guy had locked himself into one of the 3 bathrooms on the main floor (downstairs by the lockers). I waited 15 minutes until he opened the door. "What???" he scowled at me! There was DEBRIS everywhere in that bathroom! I tried to report this incident to the main desk. Nico, at the desk, was swamped with potential new members. I saw Belinda at her desk and told her about homeless people in our YMCA downtown bathroom. "I'm still at lunch," she told me. WHO IN THE HECK is management?? WHO takes care of making sure that I / members of the Y are "SAFE"?? Homeless people ARE using showers in the Y! This needs to be addressed. Our members should feel safe and that management can LISTEN + RESPOND (politely) to us. read more

What's not to like about LOHSE YMCA. The staff is helpful, friendly, welling to motivate, and are knowledgeable about member needs. The new renovations has not only beautify the building nestled in the rich cultural center of Tucson, but has increased the ability for someone to develop physically through top equipment, renovated studios for a variety of given classes by very knowledgeable instructors. I love the variety of mood lighting installed in the yoga studios. Membership is well worth the commitment for what all LOHSE offers. The YMCA has committed itself to being a community first organization, taking "Mind, Body,Spirit" to a sustainable top level. read more

I thought I had written a review of the Y, I have been a member here since 1993, and I remember when I was a kid going to the ground breaking ceremony of the Y in Lawton Oklahoma. Since my youth I have spent immeasurable amounts of time at the Y, from day camp, to overnight camp, ski trips, Saturday mornings, swim lessons both adult and youth. I have paid for my youngest nephew to go to Y camp (and will continue to do so). I cannot imagine my life without being a member of the Y, I might go through spells of working out more or not at all, but all the same it is a great organization and keep coming. Spending time at the Y, for youth and adults is like going to the library, everybody should belong and participate. The Y is a way of life. read more

We had the best experience in swimming lessons at this YMCA. The program was so well organized, the pool clean, and everyone so helpful and friendly. My son's teacher was amazing - the perfect mix of gentle encouraging, fun, and knowledgeable. Swim groups were extremely small (2,3,4 kids) and the price is such a bargain. read more

So I went to this YMCA today for a children's basket ball game. I thought I've been meaning to check this place out maybe it will be the gym I choose. The game is at 11am and I check in and am told to sign in and wait outside as there is a game going on now. They then amend it to the lobby area with no chairs, but to stay away from the bike rack, but also away from the doors. So with two full teams of players and their supporting family's shoehorned into this lobby, but with repeated reminders to stay behind this line and away from the bike rack (with a single bike in it) and elderly and disabled people looking longingly at the seats we are clearly not allowed to sit I just beyond the counter I decided this is not a gym to consider. There are currently 44 of us lined up here in a small space treated poorly and literally yelled at by staff. Either stagger the games or provide seating for the disabled and elderly. Don't treat people in your facility like a nuisance. These rules are pretty universal. read more

First of all the parking situation is a pain, you have to pay to park...everywhere. There is no free parking anywhere except for on the streets but only on Saturdays. The lockers are so old and either broken, rusted, or both. The hot tubs are gone. The steam rooms are permanently closed which caused a lot of members to leave. They changed the shower heads to junk and they spray water EVERYWHERE. The sauna is so old and disgusting, the same filth has been under the seats for months, and it's so roach infested that you can sit there and occasionally one will scurry across your foot. The entire wet area is hardly ever cleaned and not too long ago the same dead roach sat in the shower for a week and a half. Basically, the Lohse Family YMCA is an old building and they just don't have the money to refurbish the locker rooms or the sauna, and they really don't care about the cleanliness of the wet area and the sauna so you have to use them at your own risk. This is why I filed a complaint with the Pima County Health Department. And then there are the morons who think they can pour water on the electrical heater. Due to dissimilar metal corrosion it will blow, It's just a matter of time. They absolutely do not care about their handicapped members...at all. I have severe back issues and I have been on disability for my back since 2001 and Medicare since 2003 that require me to bend over and stretch my lower back in the sauna. I was told that I am not allowed to bend over and stretch my lower back in the sauna...ever. I was constantly harassed, stalked, yelled at, and threatened by the punk that works on Saturdays. I clearly explained my situation to the management but I was told that I was not allowed to bend over to stretch my lower back in the sauna...ever. That is blatant discrimination against the handicapped. I was supposed to have a meeting with Christie Herbst to straighten this out, but due to my back issues and difficulties walking on this particular day, I was running a little late but obviously she does not care about handicapped people so she did not wait...which is why I said that "I will be there about 4 ISH" in my email. I arrived there around 4:20. For that, I filled a formal discrimination complaint with the corporate offices in Chicago. I have also retained the services of The Arizona Center for Disability Law and was advised to file a complaint with The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, because under the Americans With Disabilities Act they are clearly in violation of federal laws. They then cancelled my membership. That turned out to be a good thing because I am Jewish so I joined the JCC. They have clean locker rooms, a hot tub, steam room, a sauna, and free parking. They will even let me bend over and stretch my lower back in the sauna because they know how important it is to ones health with severe lower back pain to bend over and stretch one's back, plus they know it is a crime to not allow me to stretch my lower back. There are plenty of other gyms around with clean locker rooms and that don't discriminate against the handicapped. Avoid the Lohse Family YMCA at all costs and join one of those, trust me, you will be a whole lot happier. Since this review will be here forever, I trust that folks will read this and avoid the Lohse Family YMCA of Tucson, and I sincerely hope that the good people at the corporate offices will read this and find out how this facility is run and intervene. This YMCA is in dire need of new management. People who do not respect the excruciating pain that handicapped people have to deal with and federal disability laws should not be allowed to work in the health club industry. I drive 20 minutes out of my way to workout at the downtown YMCA. I've never been to a gym where so many people go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. There is no ego, even in the weight room and all the equipment is always clean. There is a great variety of equipment, from a boxing room to a swimming pool. They offer daycare, yoga classes, personal training, and plenty of other services. My favorite part about the downtown YMCA is the history behind it. In the weight area there is a collage of pictures. In all of the pictures are old weightlifter a from Tucson. There are tons of Johnny Gibson photos. It's really cool and great motivation. This gym has a very warm and welcoming feeling. read more

We'd belonged to Snap Fitness since moving to Tucson and thought it was OK. Lately, though it's not been so great so we were looking around a new gym. Luckily, my health insurance has free memberships at several places - including the Y. We joined at the Y downtown because it had a jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna in addition to basketball and racquetball courts. We've really enjoyed it so far and when we've been there it hasn't been too crowded. We even were able to have the basketball court to ourselves a few times which is nice. The locker rooms are spacious and acceptably clean. My only beef is that the rules we received when signing up prohibit the use of the sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi nude. Obviously this is a good policy for health reasons (MRSA, HPV, etc.) Unfortunately, it seems about 75% of the people ignore the rules and the staff doesn't seem to mind. So, since I take immunosuppressant drugs for an organ transplant those amenities are off limit to me because of the risk of infection. That's a bummer because it's one reason we joined downtown. But, beyond that it's a great facility. I haven't tried out the pool yet but everytime we've been there it has been closed on in the process of being closed for some reason - either a monsoon storm in the area or a toddler playing in the pool and, uh... well, do you remember the scene from Caddyshack? NOT a Baby Ruth in this case. I don't know why people take a toddler in a pool designed for exercise and swimming laps... but there you go. The people are genuinely friendly and there are loads of classes to check out. They also provide child care for parents who want to work out. As others have mentioned parking can be an issue. We purchase a $10 parking pass each month which pays for itself if you use the gym with some regularity. If you're one of those people who works out once a month then it probably won't be worth it. Additionally, if you have a membership at any YMCA in the area you can use it all others. The downtown Y is closed on Sundays so we go to the Northwest Y which is actually closer to our house. The NW branch also has a Zero Depth pool with a huge slide. So, you can always try out the different amenities at different Y's in town. read more

I joined the Lohse downtown Y since it was close to work. Decent place to actually work out (i.e. not a meat market) and not feel stared at or defensive. No one cares how you look, which is a relief, ha. No "beautiful people" and that's exactly what I was looking for, so I could concentrate on actually working out! Reasonable fees and a staff that's interested in you and what they do to help you. Lavish free weights area and most of the cardio machines work (as noted elsewhere, they're quick to get broken machines repaired). No knuckle-dragging gorilla-men hogging the weights either, which is a plus as a weightlifting woman. The women's locker room is clean and while quite a few things need upgrading, everything works and is a fine place to get back into your fitness swing if you've been gone awhile, or to ease into a fitness routine if you haven't been regularly going to a gym at all. Upside: clean, affordable, basic necessities covered. Downside: aging equipment, facility needs upgrading (for example, the ceiling fans are too small for the large main space and don't do much to circulate air; racquetball courts need refinishing, shower area need upgrading, carpeting is old and getting tattered, etc). I also had an annoying prior experience with this Y a few years ago since I had a membership paid for by auto-pay withdrawals from my checking account, canceled my membership later (I became ill and couldn't use it) and then despite my written notice to them that I was quitting, they kept withdrawing money from my account. My advice is that if you plan on canceling your membership, TELL THEM IN WRITING at least two months in advance, and keep an eye on your checking account withdrawals as well. Someone was asleep at the wheel there. If you're going to go regularly, buy a public parking pass for the garage next door, reasonably priced at $15/month. Street parking is a nightmare and the library across the street (formerly free parking) charges now for parking. read more

My family of four has been a member of Lohse for over three years. It is reasonably priced and comes with FREE child watch from 9AM-1PM each day. My only frustration is with parking ($2/day when you go) and the fact that they're closed on Sunday. The staff is so welcoming and they know our kids by name. Classes are great, kids sports leagues are great, there is a pool on the second floor and the equipment works. Yes it's a little older gym, but they're continuously making improvements- the state of the art basketball gym, the spin room, the locker rooms, the cardio machines, etc. We love this place. read more

We're members of the Y. Decided to workout downtown to use the jacuzzi since my joints have been bothering me. The Cybex machines are great to use. Easy to set up the weight. Instructions are on the machines to make it easy to do the exercise right. If you are a member of the Y, you get a workout set up for you each time you come in so it's all good. Well, my only complaint about this location is that the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna are inside the women's (or men's) rooms. And most of the women (all) use them in the buff. Now, I'm no prude and nudity doesn't bother me, but I'm not sure about hygiene in the jacuzzi. I stayed in my swimsuit and it's not real likely I'll be going back in there. No matter how much chlorine is in that water. Oh, and parking is a problem. If you park in the structure, you have to pay. The meters are free after 5pm. Besides that, Lohse YMCA is a great place to work out. Lots of equipment, friendly staff and nice people there. read more

I'm just reviewing the day care. Staff is excellent. My son's been going for three months and they do a great job and creating a structured but fun environment. They learn basic Spanish as well as English (counting, alphabet, etc.). My son comes home with new songs almost every week, and they are very active - going to the gym, going on nature walks, and going to the library. They have also ventured out bowling and to the Children's Museum. Downside: Parking. Parking is a major downside and I have almost considered changing day cares because of it. At certain times of the morning and in the evening you might start pulling your hair out, because there is really NO WHERE to park, and you will have to drive around waiting for something to open up. read more

I joined the Y downtown while the gym at work is being renovated, and I am so apply I did. They have a good amount of cardio equipment. And while not completely new and the latest and greatest, they take good care of it and any repairs that are needed are handled quickly. The weight room area is the same. There is a large amount of free weights and area to use them. They may not be the newest, but everything is in good shape. The locker room is huge and has plenty of showers (and hot water!). I have not used the steam room or jacuzzi, but I also see people in the jacuzzi. And though I personally don't use it, a lot of people come here to use the pool. It seems to be a good pool. The downside is they do not open until 530 am and they are closed on Sundays. And parking can be an issue, but the parking garage is right there, and I am always able to find a metered spot. Overall, I am happy with this YMCA and would recommend it to anyone, especially since they do not require you to a long term commitment. read more

The downtown Y is an expansive below-ground labyrinth. The main floor is the cardio room and there are many, many treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, so many that I don't think I have ever seen anyone waiting. This Y is less of a nursing home than some of the other Ys, but don't expect this to be a place where beautiful people, scantily clad, barely work out just so they can be seen at the gym. It is way more utilitarian than that. They have a good selection of classes especially for those who rise at the ungodly hour of 6:00 AM. Now this is where I give a shout out to Issa the Zumba instructor here and at the Lighthouse Y. She is so wonderful, I could sing her praises forever. Her classes are a blast (she teaches like 10 a week)! It is worth getting a membership to the Y just to attend her classes. Did I mention there are between 40-60 people in every class? So, needless to say, Issa has a following. I don't like the pool. It is kind of in the parking garage, hard to describe but it is small and often full so you have to share lanes when you are swimming laps. The locker rooms are not too bad, and they have saunas and whirlpools connected, but they are often broken and waiting for a repairman to be fixed. I would say that this Y is better than you would expect for downtown Tucson, but it's probably not great for people who like to swim or have all the fancy amenities. read more

I joined the YMCA because it had a lot of classes and a pool for laps. I really enjoyed it for about a year. I had a problem with Lohse YMCA after a trainer asked me if I had a mental problem because I smiled too much. That was just one trainer, too tough somebody....Strike one. So went to the Y on Columbus. Yoga with Carlos, wonderful man great class, a life guard expressed his dislike teaching water aerobics because it was all old people, strike two. Another life guard referred to us seniors as "a bunch of gray hairs" strike three. In all fairness to the YMCA, the Northwest Y was superior to them all! I just could not drive that far to work out. It was affordable in one regard and costly in others. read more

I am reviewing this strictly as a gym, since that is what I'm paying the outrageous monthly fee for. Not the lockers since they are $10-15 extra a month. Not the parking because it's $15 a month for up to 3 hrs a day. I've belonged to all type of gyms for 24 yrs, from upscale to little holes in the wall, and this is by far the worst gym I've been belonged to. Location and time constraints keep me stuck here unfortunately. The weight room, where I spend most of my time, is equipped with machines from the '80's. Weights constantly stick, I've even had free weights almost unscrewed and wobbling to an alarming degree. Padded seats and backs are fixed with a cheap layer of pleather, with the cracks underneath still scratching at you from uneven padding. Huge crack across the mirror duct taped together. Could go on, but let's talk about member behavior. Weights not put away, lying in the middle of the floor or still on the bars. I've seen people working out barefoot without a thing being said. The trainers are some of the worst offenders. Dragging equipment between rooms, pushing into you as you're trying to work out as they chit chat with clients, or YELL their encouragement. They need to quit sacrificing people's safety, they may be non profit but maybe they should hold off on all the buffets I walk pass, and maybe start replacing (not taking donations of) equipment. The parking situation at the Daycare facility is a nightmare. You can pull into the small driveway to pick up your child and pray that another parent doesn't block you in. The 2 stars are for the director Ms.Connie and Ms.Rene both were wonderful. The daycare doesn't up until 6:30am and unfortunately sometimes they are late. I have waited outside with other staff until 6:40am for the daycare to open up. Not the place you want to drop off your kid if your shift starts at 7am. Ms.Ivette is not a good teacher. She has issues controlling her anger and shouldn't work with children. In all honesty, it was a bit much dealing with the holiday closings on federal holidays ( normal daycares stay open) and closing early on December 23rd and New year's eve, the inconsistent 6:30am open time, and a cranky miserable teacher. read more

Below I've reviewed two Yoga classes at the YMCA 1. Teacher: Cameron Style: Vinyasa Flow I love going to classes at the YMCA because it isn't a yoga studio and you are exposed to a variety of people in these classes. A lot of these people are older men, which you don't often see in yoga studios. I like seeing people who don't seem like stereo typical physically focused studio goers taking classes. There is a feeling of forgiveness and community in this space. That said, Cameron is tough teacher and teaches a very challenging class. She commands the room with an inner strength of character. She speaks firmly and succinctly and isn't afraid to introduce more challenging poses. She is also good at showing easier variations of these challenging poses to anyone who needs it. She knows her routine very well and never stumbles or misspeaks. The focus of the poses is on inner and physical strength. We did a lot of arm balancing and rigorous sun salutations and plank based poses. She seems to slip some non-traditional yoga moves in there as well. She had an excellent command of the body and demonstrated some of the arm balances to us with ease. She came across as inspiring and if one wanted to aspire to great physical strength Carmen is someone you would look to for guidance. There was no time to think during this class. She quickly moved us from pose to pose only stopping to feel the burn of a particularly challenging pose. It is one of those classes where I wonder if I will make it though and just when I can't go on, we go into the cooling floor poses. I lay there on the ground grateful that it was over and that I made it through to the end. Her class gave me a sense of accomplishment. I don't know that I will ever teach this kind of yoga but I really enjoyed taking this class. 2. Teacher: Hilda Oropeza Style: Yin Hilda's class was a gentle and slow yin yoga for beginners. The great thing about it is that you do not have to be a beginner to be challenged by it. With Yin yoga you are always able to invite yourself to go deeper. Hilda had a laid back approach that made you feel welcome at any level. She presented the material well and helped us get into the poses slowly with care. One of the things she also did well is talk us out of the pose which is something really important in Yin yoga. She kept us in the poses and seemed to know not to talk too much or too little. She seemed to work well with the tension of staying in the pose and release of being out of the pose. She also made the class seem therapeutic and not a competition to push yourself. I noticed a lot of older people were in the class which is really nice as well. How often do you see a group of older people doing yoga in a class that is mixed ages. My guess is that they feel pretty comfortable in this environment and are not afraid to be mixed in with younger people. Her emotion was serene and contented. She wasn't dressed in the latest Prana clothes and looked approachable. As a matter of fact, I had a nice conversation with her after class which is something I normally don't do after a yoga class. She seemed to have a good grasp of what was going on in the room and offered appropriate suggestions. The class felt so soothing and produced a feeling of blissful relaxation. I was so glad I was doing it. She also seemed to be taking a mindfulness or "insight" approach to the poses asking people to feel the pose and notice any differences in the body. There are some Yoga classes that just have a "community" feeling to them, like "we are all in this together" and this is one of them. This is a feeling created and cultivated by the teacher. read more

Great gym, family atmosphere with a day care option. They have a good amount of all cardio machines. Sometimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays it is packed. Get there early or go late for an hour workout. Facility is always clean and front desk staff is friendly and curtious. The only thing here is parking. Gather your coins people, look under the couch for some spare change to put in the meter if you go to the gym before 5pm. Good size pool is available. There are lots of lockers open for you to store your stuff well you crank out those sit ups. If you become a member you can also use other YMCA facilities in town. Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, and aqua aerobics classes are available and more. read more

This is a really good gym I like that they work with families and I'm very excited about all the classes they have to offer. All of their locations are at a convenient place. This is one of the few gyms that includes daycare with the membership and the activities they have for children makes it easier to leave them under the care. This gym doesn't have the latest and most modern equipment or super updated facilities(which is the only reason for 4 stars intraday of 5), but it is a great neighborhood center. There is very much a sense of community here. The staff are are incredibly friendly and supportive and even the other members are friendly. They have large and diverse selection of group exercise classes, such as indoor cycling, kickboxing, yoga, Pilates, PiYo, Barre, and TRX. Sometimes due to the time of day, the classes can be hard to make it to. Many of the more popular classes start at 6:30pm, which is just a bit too late for me. However all classes are worth it and the instructors are very professional and again, helpful. The personal training sessions that the Y offers are also great. You can even do the sessions with a partner, making working out together very fun. This location also has a pool, as well as separate saunas. They are not open on Sundays, but it's a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the lovely weather Tucson has. For anyone considering this as their gym, do it. It's such a good atmosphere to work out in. Never feels like a meat market. There are also many other member benefits that you can read for yourself on their official website. read more

Great facility, nice staff, very open, ample lighting. There are only 2 gyms to choose from downtown and this by far is the better of the two. The only thing to improve would be to add more equipment to the free weight area. Other than that it's perfect. *Also will be closed Sundays starting I think next month (April 09), which can be a bit of a turn off, except for a downtown location where people like to walk to the gym. But the upside is that the membership is good at all Tucson area YMCA's so I guess it's not the end of the world. read more

I have signed up my son for swimming lessons at the Lohse Family YMCA this summer and I feel they are NOT KID FRIENDLY AT ALL. They put the kids in time out during their lesson when they take their hand off the wall for even ONE SECOND. And when they do keep their hand on the wall and bob up and down under the water while they wait for their turn with the instructor, they are again put in time out and asked to sit out. The pool water is cold and when they sit out in time out they even get colder. The guards yell at the children to "WALK" and most of the time they are walking with a little excited jump that kids do.
