Last stop on our Dec 11th food crawl, I was stuffed so just hung with our food and as my foodie friends ordered drinks and a home made Key Lime Pie. OMG I tried a piece of this big slice and died and went to heaven. Utter addictiveness in flavor and texture including their homemade crust. Not too often Im impressed with how Key lime pie is made and this ranks 2nd on my list of places to go for key lime pie. The indoor ambience was cool with memorabilia all over the wall like a small TV playing star wars movie, a retro TV in the bathroom painted the words on it "Legalize Kush". Wow, we had such delicious burgers, truffle fries, and a caesar salad at LoKal. All the food we had was really good, I had no idea I could even enjoy a salad so much, and I'm a salad lover. The LoKal is a south fl institution- and mostly because it is one of the spots that you can get gator bites and truly feel like you're that close to the Everglades. The vibes inside the LoKal are great and every inch feels nostalgic and authentic to the area. It's always a great spot to come and the food and service are consistently great! It overpowered the rest of the sandwich. Fries were delicious, and paired with their homemade honey mustard they're perfection. The shrimp bowl was also pretty good, but I did think the portion was a little small for the price. I don't think I'd order these items again. Following that, we had the fried pickles and snapper bites (the last two were on the happy hour and that was a great deal)! For our main course, I had the chicken chop sandwich and I added an egg. This only elevated my experience. Everyone else had the beef and they loved it! The mushroom burger was a hit, as was the burger with the guava. I had truffle fries as my side (since each sandwich came with one side) and the remainder of the table had 1/2 sweet potato fries and 1/2 regular fries. We also had dessert; the key lime pie and the guava bread pudding. We thought the key lime pie lacked in the tartness and the guava bread pudding lacked in the guava and tasted more like a bread pudding made with a lot of condensed mild. Dare say I, they were the first place (at least that I remember) who made burgers cool again. On this day, I enjoyed a quiet meal at the bar. It was on a Saturday before the dinner rush and after the lunch one. As usual, the service was great and my waitress did a solid by recommending the Pilsner pictured after I told her I wanted something light but not what they had on draft. This is something I love about LoKal and is always consistent--the staff is able to recommend beers and often let's you sample them too. As a Grove local we have been coming here since Lokal opened when Pricilla worked behind the bar. In the past there was always a wait but you did not mind waiting since you knew the food and service were going to be spot on. As the years have passed we have noticed the slow decline in Lokal. They changed their menu and got rid of a lot of the staples. You no long have a wait and I can see why. After not going for around 2 years, since we had a bad experience last time we went, we went back today to give them another try, and we regretted it The service was absolutely HORRIBLE. Most of the time there was not a swingle server on the floor. They kept on hiding out in the kitchen. Thankfully, we were seated by the hostess so we were able to get her to help us since our server was MIA. The fries used to be my favorite but today they were overcooked and bad. The wedge salad had no dressing and overloaded with onion. It is sad to see on of the long time Grove restaurants just give up and not care anymore. read more

I came in this week and they barely have any beer on the menu, the great thing about this place used to be that you could pair beer with burgers. One their most legendary burgers; "my childhood dream" is off the menu. When I ordered my double cheeseburger, I specifically requested medium rare to medium, but no more. I was the first customer there, they had no pressure or time constraints, yet the burger came out well done, I showed it to the server, he acknowledged it. Then the manager came out and I told him that it was way overcooked he acknowledged. They still charged the full $30 for the burger that they messed up. They even charged $1 for their, what looked like tap water in a reusable glass bottle. This place started at the peak of burger joints in Miami and possibly the nation, it has fallen into the abyss since. Sad way to see one of the best go down. read more

Fresh off the 2025 King Mango Strut parade and feeling famished, I wandered into LoKal in Coconut Grove lured by the hopes of a hearty burger and a couple of craft brews. What I had hoped for was a laid-back, casual post-parade beer and burger experience.. What I got was more of an artificial avant-garde gastropub, financial awakening with DIY dining. When my bill landed.. just shy of $60.. I found myself momentarily disoriented. Surely this must've been some sort of error? Perhaps I had been charged for that cozy couple's anniversary dinner or maybe a prorated share of the rent? But No.. After slow but progressively summoning the service staff, who seemed more engaged in a spirited kitchen game of hide-n-seek than.. you know... serving.. I learned that a 20% gratuity had been generously tacked on... despite the fact that I'd practically waited on myself. The beer? Tasty! But the price? Let's just say the pint-to-pocket conversion wasn't what I'd initially been told.. as for the burger if your culinary fantasies involve paying high-end steakhouse prices for what amounts to a dainty hors d'oeuvre, then LoKal will exceed your wildest dreams.. a 99-cent Whopper Junior offers more heft, heart, flavor and caloric comfort than this $20+ bite size hors d'oeuvre. LoKal's motto is obviously less about feeding the customer and more about feeding the profit margin! If you're after a $16 pint, a $20+ single White Castle burger and the thrill of being both patron and server, LoKal is an absolute must! Not only did our burgers come out fast and delicious, we were offered water (including a cup for my grandson and a toy), and when my daughter got in the car, she realized they had given her a complimentary bottle of wine. All that for something that they did not have control over. My family and friends have eaten at Lokal dozens of times. The burgers have always been some of our favorites, and the service has always been great. But today, they really made our day. Lokal has a handful of surprisingly good options other than burgers on their menu that I'd recommend such as their Gator Bites, Mexican Chili, and Salmon BLT. Food: 5 My go to is usually their 50/50 burger or the latest Addition to the menu, the bababooey burger which comes with caramelized onions, apple and Brie cheese. It's sweet, delicious, and awesome! The most popular burger is the Guava Burger. Ambiance: 4 The ambiance gives a 1990s dive bar/hangout spot. It's a perfect spot to just kick back and enjoy a bite and brew. Service: 4 Service is for the most part, great! You occasionally run into an off day or just a very busy hour which can hinder any staff but overall the staff here is friendly and does a good job. If you're there, ask for Daisy, she's one of the managers and she always makes our stay feel very welcomed and taken cared for. She's a bright spot to this place. The one ripe I have experienced over the past year or so, like most other establishments in Miami, has been the inclusion of an automatic 20% gratuity charges both for in person AND online orders. As much as I agree that the staff should be taken care of for their services, I do believe that this allows for service to not be as high sometimes knowing there is an automatic gratuity included. I'm also not the biggest fan for including auto gratuity on an online order that I physically am just simply going to pick up myself. This could lead to customers looking elsewhere.
