We recently had 1,300 sq feet of engineered hardwood 7-in plank installed throughout the main floor of our home. We did everything but the bathrooms, so our project included closets, entryways, living room, dining rooms, kitchen, bedrooms, and undercutting the stone fireplace and stone kitchen island. There was even some leveling (due to builder decisions about our slab that we discovered on demo) that needed to be done, and they handled it perfectly. We received four quotes for this work and Bill's estimate was by far the best. He brought samples of our favorites out for us to look at in our home when he did the measuring. He was accommodating and straightforward. Bill makes a schedule and sticks to it no matter what, which is a refreshing change of pace compared to literally every other contractor in the area, flooring or otherwise. The man is no-nonsense and we appreciate that! You won't find schmoozy small talk with this man; you will find fair pricing and on-time, quality work from honest people. The crew was excellent. Very tidy and polite. They were done within 5 days, just as promised. The whole job of sanding and cutting was necessarily messy so I urge others to be patient and communicate their needs. My advice: If you are doing a large hardwood floor project and you don't want dust on something, then cover it up or move it. We could not be happier with our floors. Update based on comment from business owner. Owner states that I had no contact with his business. This is a lie. I spent 45 minutes in his establishment, discussing the merits of hardwood vs engineered hardwood, talking about how the new laminates are really good, but can be close in price to the engineered hardwood, etc. He excuses his terrible, bullying behavior by saying I wrote 180 reviews in 6 months. Try 9 YEARS. And telling someone to "get a life" is not light-hearted, and insulting someone's appearance isn't a "joke". Don't go here! I walked into the store to try to get information on flooring for my newly purchased home. The moment we walked in he first yelled "What do you want? Do you have an appointment?" We said "no" as we didn't know we needed one. He grumpily said we could come in but that he couldn't help us. We said we had a quick question as we were looking for a specific flooring. "What do you want," he yelled. When we told him and yelled at us again "I don't have those samples. While trying to get clarification, if he had access to a very specific style and color, he yelled again in the most condescending voice "I told you I don't have that in" He was the rudest sales person I have ever dealt with. My husband & I found "Bill" to be a complete arrogant rude ass! We told him we were beginners just starting to get quotes to replace the majority of the flooring in our home with hand scraped hardwood; and therefore going to ask many questions. Which, to his defense....he answered, but he was so demeaning, condescending and very belittling with every response. At one point, he even laughed at the size of an area we wanted to replace. He repeatedly told us what his team could do and would not "waste" their time doing...telling us time and again their time was entirely too valuable to deal with us and our minimal needs. Excuse me, but I thought WE were the paying customer?! All I can say is....Fine, we will go elsewhere and we did! Lander's Flooring, where we received with open arms and respect! "Bill" must be doing so well there was no need for him to treat his potential customer with some modicum of respect. Obviously, our money mustn't mean anything to him (ps....we were paying in cash)! We needed just over 1,000 sq./ft. of builder-quality carpet replaced with engineered hardwood flooring in our nearly new home. (The carpet was a no-cost builder option that we'd planned to replace with wood shortly after we moved in.) Equipped with a list of Yelp-vetted flooring companies, we quickly found a friendly-enough place and an economical Shaw floor we loved, however the installed estimate--when all the labor and material costs were factored in--was around $10 sq./ft. Wow! That wasn't much cheaper than what the builder quoted us on the same type of flooring. We then proceeded to get additional estimates (five total), all from reputable Yelp companies in the North Austin area. That included one that only does the installation using wood you buy the yourself. When all was said and done, the estimates were within about 10% of each other, still more than we wanted to pay. Message me if you want details; happy to save other Yelper's the headache of comparing one flooring place over another. Despite the inconsistent Yelp reviews, I decided to pay Lone Star Floors a visit...the sixth and final place. They have their flooring displayed with prices that are the 'all-in' cost (as-needed floor leveling was the only extra), which was extremely helpful and NOT what we'd experienced at other stores that either didn't display a price, or had prices that didn't cover old floor take-up, trim work, furniture moving, glue, etc. What was better was how amazing those prices were. Lone Star had a budget flooring option that was very similar in color and finish to the Shaw floor we loved, and it was among the least expensive in the store, less than $6 sq/ft (cash price). We were thrilled! By the end of the week, the owner Bill had measured us, finalized the estimate, and upon receiving our 50% deposit, had us on the schedule for the following week. Installation: From start to finish, the install took 5 days. Longer than the 2 or 3 days we expected, but it was a two-person team for all but one day of the install, and our foundation had some unforeseen cracking and leveling issues that had to be addressed over two days. Lone Star's installation crew are VERY good at what they do. The owner, Bill, went out of his way to let us know that it was "his guys" that he's worked with for years that would be doing the install. And it clearly showed. At no time did we feel the install was rushed, and it was obvious that the guys had a strong rapport with Bill and took pride in their work. They arrived when they said they would, stayed into the evenings, and cleaned up after themselves. Even the final details (cleaning up residual glue and caulking the shoe mold) was done with great care and they made sure we were pleased with the job before they left. My wife and I were both extremely impressed and the end result looks flawless. About the owner: I have to say I'm not surprised by the negative comments others have mentioned about Bill. Bill's not going to win any congeniality awards, and he'd probably be the first one to tell you that. There were quite a few times his opinions and statements came off as rude or condescending. E.g. he objected to our requests for a different trim and transitions than what his guys normally use, I believe because the standard method (included in his price) was his tried-and-true way to do it and he didn't want problems for us down the road. He's been in the business long time, and it seems that he's clearly figured out what's best for the customer, regardless of what they might think or want. But at the end of the day, I thought Bill was a very fair and reasonable guy; he ultimately agreed to our requests, charging us a very reasonable amount for the extra labor involved, and maintained communication throughout the project. Bill made sure we always knew exactly what our costs were and that any changes were confirmed in writing to avoid any misunderstanding. Despite his opinions and how he can come across, I do believe that Bill's intentions are to make the customer happy by giving them what he knows to be the best long-term flooring solution. In that regard, he definitely made us happy. If you want an experience where the salespeople are a joy to speak to, who will handle all of your questions and concerns with patience and a smile, I have at least 3 other flooring stores I could recommend over Lone Star. If you want wood flooring and installation that's a great price, without compromising on quality, definitely pay Lone Star Floors a visit. read more

I just called this business because I am shopping around to put new laminate in my entire home. The man that answered the phone was on a job site and he sounded very stressed. He got upset with all of my questions. I was asking things like "How long will it take to get a measure and get the install if I go with your company?" Wife and I called and met with Bill, he was very knowledgeable and very easy to get along with. Not sure why some of the posts on here are contrary but anyway sometimes you have to consider the source. He listened and also advised us on our project. He was able to get us a quote that was almost 4k less than another flooring company and we believe with an even better product. No complaints here and we'll definitely look him up for future flooring projects. Bill is a straight shooter type of guy. We had 1,600 square feet of carpeting and tile replaced with vinyl. Bill explained he whole process thoroughly with us and gave us an excellent quote. The installation crew were even better than he promised. In our living room, they had to cut into the fireplace base, which created a lot of dust. The crew took extra caution to keep the dust to a minimum and constantly cleaned up after they were finished. They finished in less time than we thought possible. My husband and I began our floor search at Lowes as we had no clue where to begin and we truly just wanted to look. We grabbed a few samples went home and started to research, and somehow I stumbled upon Lone Star Floors!! We read reviews from the website loved the deals Bill discussed on line and knew we needed to go up north to look. We went and met with Bill, who is a good ol' boy and no, he's not a huge fan of Lowes or Lumber Liquidators but I get it he's a floor guy, and you have young kids on hourly wages who don't know a whole lot. Bill showed us all the types of laminate, explained why you need a sound barrier pad, and how laminate is rated. He allowed us to take 4 samples home and these aren't little squares but a big sample to actually get an idea of how it will look in your home. He came out to measure and just blew us a way with how great his prices are for moving furniture, removing old carpet, old tile and of course the new floors. We got out our quote the same day he measured and 12 days later they were installing. Monday, October 20, 2014, around 10:00 am, Jose and Stacey showed up and they were Fabulous!!! Both nice young men, respectful, and extremely hard workers. Every evening they cleaned up the area which was 934 sq ft, entry, halls, formal dining, living and sitting room. The entry was 147 sq ft of tile and was a beast to remove and it was dusty but the guys did such a good job to keep it all mess to a minimum. Every night they swept etc and we would grab our chairs and TV trays to use for our meals etc. They were here 4 days but did such a great job, answered all our questions told us how to clean the laminate etc. I truly cannot say enough good things about Jose and Stacey, I was terrified of the mess as everyone told me about nightmare experiences and we didn't have any of that!! I would use Lone Star again as you cannot beat the quality and the price. It's nice to know you only are working with certain people, if I have an issue I call Bill, I won't have to hunt for the right representative. That was our concern with Lowes is not knowing who we will get to install and Jose has worked for Bill for years, he's his #1 guy and Stacey is Joses assistant. I know other reviewers talk about Bill being deameaning and such but again he's a good ol' boy who's been in the business close to 30 years and he's set in his ways but I mean aren't we all. I went there talking to him, the owner, Bill of lone star floors at Jollyville, about a potential job of 2000 sq ft installed wood for a brand new house with stairs, not built yet. I spent of course 2 wks researching about wood installation and the types of wood. I told him about wanting a click and float egr wood. He went off the saying things like I don't know what I am talking about, he is wasting his time talking to me, and I am mis-informed, and already made up my mind. He only got tongue/groove glue-down for egr wood. So I asked him to show me what he got. I admit his products are impressive and pricing is right. I asked him about the hardness and the scratch ability of the products. He told me that it is a waste of time to explain it to me because it is too complicated and beyond my understanding. I said: "Try me." "You already made up your mind, it is too hard to simplify for you to understand." "I actually have an engineering degree, try me." MS in Mech Engr from a top ten school, but that is not necessary for him to know. So somehow there was a change of respect from verbal degradation to suspicion. I have a very patient and pleasant demeanor that can handle such abuse. So I let him tell and and show me the products in his store. I ask about the installation process which he is very knowledgeable. I even give him the layout of my house, which he evaluate for risk. At time he accuse me of being a potential spy from another store. He did not like me taking pictures of his product. Did not like me doing a scratch-test on his product. And wants to know why I am asking so much questions. At the end he asked me one question: "What are you: Chinese?" "I prefer not to say because I think you will make some sly comment." "I just want to comment how intelligent you are... This is retail. We exchange information.. you asked millions of question and I ask 1. Vietnamese?" I shook my head and smile. "Ok that is enough. I am done." "Can I ask more question?" "NO, I am done talking no more." And he looked at me and basically hint at me to go. I went to 2 more retail stores afterward and I learned more about the tongue and groove glue down, whose sales reps and owner are more willing to answer my questions and explain to me the difference, correcting my assumptions. We did 2 levels, 2 stairs and removal of existing wood floor in one room. Jose and team spent 9 days including a Saturday and worked diligently and meticulously. They moved and reassembled a whole bunch of furnitures including a pool table, took care of imperfections in existing floors, kept the house as clean and livable as possible. The communications were always clear and courteous. We couldn't expect a more smooth experience or better result. Lone Star Floors did a great job! I have ordered UA hickory engineered floor for the entire house. The floor was installed using glue down method on the concrete floor. The job was done perfectly. I realize that dealing with glue can be messy, but the installers managed to do very neat job. The floor looks beautiful and very clean. The baseboards were also installed perfectly well. Not to mention that the job was done on time. It was not cheap but mostly because of the high price for the floor itself. But I believe it's worth every penny. We had 910 total square feet of flooring installed by Lone Star Floors (544 sq ft of wood; 364 sq ft of tile) as well as new baseboards and it looks FANTASTIC. They were on time as far as arrival, finished when they said they would, and budgeted almost perfectly (barely had any wood left over). Jose (lead installer) is very thorough, knowledgeable, and kind and he and his team even put down some portions of the carpet I was having them remove in order to not walk on the portions of the house they weren't replacing, to keep it clean. Another nugget of great customer service--I totally goofed when it came to pay the final 50% balance after inspection--I didn't allow enough time for my account transfer from savings to checking to take place. I could've charged it via credit card but didn't want to pay the slightly higher cost for this so I asked Bill if he'd consider taking a check and just not cashing it until three business days later once they money was in the account. I left it up to him as it was totally my mistake and he was more than willing to do so. I also had questions throughout the process and Bill was very reachable via email. He fielded multiple calls and emails from my wife and I as we worked through what kind of wood, what were the differences, etc. His prices, we checked, are VERY fair compared to what you'll find around town. I appreciated Bill being a straight-shooter and not trying to upsell us or point us into a certain product. He's direct and easy to understand. He was quite thorough on his walk-through with me to measure and quote. He knows his stuff, again, as there was hardly any material left over. I'd recommend them without question. There's also a two-year warranty on the labor. Lastly, he makes the process pretty easy by sending a customer guideline sheet ahead of the job so you how to have the house ready, what to expect, etc. All in all, for our first flooring experience, we are thrilled with how it went, start to finish. read more
